The day she took the job, she says she felt like she had walked into Grimm's Fairy Tales. The book traces the history of the country from the struggle for independence from the British which was gained in 1967. The first part provides an insight into the Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen, the first and only socialist state in the Arab world its achievements - the emancipation of women, redistribution of land to the people, an impressive mass literacy programme - and its demise due to internecine struggles in the Yemeni Socialist Party. In 1990 South and North Yemen united but the southerners were discriminated against by the northern regime and in 1994 fought a second war for independence. They were defeated and until the Houthi coup in 2014 were second class citizens in a state which exploited their resources and marginalised their people. Another struggle for independence is now being waged as the southerners cannot live in one state with the fundamentalist Houthi regime which controls more than 80 percent of the north. Today we feature Jo Ann Gramlich. She is an award-winning author and speech-language pathologist who provides evaluation and remediation services for children with communication disorders in early intervention and preschool programs at Pediatric Educational and Diagnostic Services-ECMC, Buffalo, New York. She has worked for the Buffalo Public School District of Western New York where she provided speech-language therapy for elementary and middle school-aged children. She holds a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. She is a member of the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association. She presented a Parent Involvement Research Paper on Involving Parents in School Programs at the ASHA Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. She also is a founding faculty member of the International Academy of Universal Self Mastery (IAUSM, 2020). It is my sincere hope that sharing part of my testimony can encourage youths of all ages through this personal “how to follow your dream” road map told in storybook form. Pursuing a dance career on your own is the story painted in this historical document. This testimony of my childhood dream to become a dance artist is very personal, and I believe you can get something out of it. Coming from J. P. Turner Middle School, dancing in the big musical Dreamland Cafe and a friend teaching me ballet in her basement, there was catching up to do as I auditioned and made a place in the brand-new performing arts magnet high school to begin serious training. It was there I met my dancing soul mate and found some local notoriety producing and codirecting a dance company since turning eighteen. She and her cousin and made up many stories to act out as children, pretending to be whatever they wanted for hours on end. Unfortunately, adult life isn't that simple, but as a writer, LaBruce can become that child again and live out her own fantasies. LaBruce has been married for more than 33 years and has two sons, four stepchildren and 23 grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys horseback riding, going to the beach and caring for animals.
