This week we dedicate our show to a documentary that we think is important.  We have promised our listeners to keep the podcast non-political (no shouting talking heads, no books with a political agenda).  But there are some issues that are vitally important that we also believe are non-political.  Book banning is first and foremost among these.  Next week on February 9th, The Librarians documentary starts streaming on PBS stations across the country as part of their beloved Independent Lens series.  Join us as we talk to two brave and brilliant librarians fighting book bans with all their might.  We also talk to Kim A. Snyder, the director of the film about why the stories presented in this documentary are so important.  Book banning is wrong.  And we are talking about it this week. In this episode, I explain why life disrupts reading, the two reader mindsets I see most often, and the exact process I use to start reading again without pressure. This is a practical guide for thoughtful readers who want depth, not guilt.Send Me a Text Message with Your Questions

Amy and Kat check in with two of their feelings (disgusted and eager) before diving into a surprisingly effective (and slightly unsettling) skincare hack involving dandruff shampoo on your face. They unpack the difference between what’s actually toxic and what’s just uncomfortable: someone disagreeing with you, being asked to compromise, feeling guilty after you hurt someone, hearing disappointment, and the kind of conflict that can actually lead to growth (from @therapyforwomen). Then Amy shares an analogy from Dr. Matt Townsend about highly sensitive people and she’s decided that Kat is a low-end-Porsche. Plus: a legit game-changer for protein balls (thank you, One Degree), and book talk (Amy’s reading Book Lovers by Emily Henry). Get some Feeling Things merch by clicking HERE! Welcome to another gripping episode of Women Petpreneurs! In this special book club edition, Mary Oquendo, Sacheen Mobley, and  Denise Heroux dive deep into stories of survival, darkness, and the mysteries surrounding some of history's most notorious criminals. This time, our hosts take on true crime with a twist—choosing books that focus on infamous serial killers, with each selection offering a new perspective. Mary Oquendo discusses "The Son of Sam and Me," a firsthand account from a survivor of the Son of Sam killings, shedding light on the harrowing events and challenging the notion that David Berkowitz acted alone. Sacheen brings us the chilling tale of Madame LaLaurie, the infamous New Orleans socialite and serial killer, exploring both historical fact and the folklore that lingers in the French Quarter. Meanwhile, Denise Heroux shares "Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland," the courageous story of Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, two women held captive for a decade, surviving unthinkable abuse and eventually reclaiming their freedom. Together, the trio explores themes of obsession, cruelty, resilience, and justice—reflecting on how these stories of survival connect us, and why, as women business owners and pet lovers, these tales both haunt and inspire. Whether you're a fan of true crime or just looking for heartfelt, honest conversation, this episode is sure to keep you listening. So grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and join us for a discussion that's as thought-provoking as it is intense.

Elizabeth Birkelund is not just a novelist and journalist. She's a traveler of landscapes, both worldly and emotional, and a gifted listener to the human heart. Her newest book, A Northern Light in Provence, sweeps us from the crystalline silence of Greenland's ice fields to the golden, lavender-scented slopes of Provence. With her unmistakable tenderness and immersive storytelling, she reminds us how profoundly place can shape our imaginations, our choices, and our inner lives. Drawing on her own adventures, from the raw, rugged beauty of the Arctic Circle to the quiet, contemplative corners of rural France, Elizabeth writes with the authenticity of someone who has breathed these worlds in. In this episode, she invites us behind the scenes of her creative life: what it's like to research remote settlements at the edge of the map, how she absorbs the slow, sunlit rhythms of Provence, and why stepping outside familiar boundaries can spark the most unexpected insights. With wit, wonder, and a generosity of spirit, Elizabeth reflects on how landscapes mirror our private truths, how displacement can open doors we didn't know were locked, and how surrendering control in the creative process can make a story sing with honesty. For anyone who loves travel, transformation, and the quiet magic of being reshaped by the world, this conversation with Elizabeth Birkelund is a luminous journey and one you won't want to miss.Only on Speaking of Travel! Thanks for listening to Speaking of Travel! Book events and festivals are always a favorite around here. Today's conversation dives deep into the art and craft of creating an engaging literary festival as Anne welcomes Sarah Moriarty, the Executive Director of the Charleston Literary Festival, to the show. They talk about what goes into curating such a festival, what you may be glad to know before attending a literary festival yourself, and what makes a particularly satisfying in-person gathering. Especially when it comes to a good conversation about the books we love, or the books we didn't even know about before but are so glad we discovered. Sarah also shares her three-point recommendation for getting the most out of your festival experience. She tells us more about how she came to be in this position and shares details about this November's event, which is welcoming more than 70 writers and thinkers from around the globe, including more than a few names you have heard on this show before. Whether you've got this specific festival or a future one on your wish list, you'll hear great tips in today's conversation. Please share your suggestions or favorite festival moments by leaving a comment over on our show notes page, where you'll also find the list of titles discussed today. Kyleigh is at 5 books so far, Hannah read 6 (and they all had 1 thing in common) and Micaela read 1 book. To help fill the time, we had you all send in some questions and had a little Q&A! Here's hoping next month is better to us! “The stories aren't about violence—they're about the preciousness of life. Each one is a reminder that this could happen to anyone.” — Jude Berman Jude Berman grew up surrounded by books and cultural diversity, thanks to her refugee parents. After a career in academic research and running independent presses, she turned her attention to her own writing. In this episode of Uncorking a Story, Jude rejoins me to discuss her latest work, Shot: A Dictionary of the Lost, a collection of 26 short stories exploring the human toll of gun violence. Together, we explore her unique publishing journey, the role of age and experience in writing, and the power of fiction to build empathy and spark conversation.   Key Themes Writing vs. Publishing Journeys: Jude explains the difference between building a life as a writer and actually getting published. Many of her books began in a drawer before finally seeing the light of day. Age as a Strength: Jude emphasizes that writers often improve with age, bringing lived experience, wisdom, and deeper perspective to their work. Breaking the Catch-22: The publishing industry favors young, “malleable” voices, but often at the expense of stronger writing that emerges later in life. The Making of Shot: The 26 stories, one for each letter of the alphabet, “came through” her almost like a download, highlighting the role of intuition and channeling in the creative process. On Gun Violence: While tackling a heavy topic, Jude frames her stories as celebrations of life, not gratuitous violence. Her goal: to remind readers that gun violence can touch anyone, anywhere. The Empathy Factor: Fiction can serve as a powerful tool for building empathy, allowing readers to experience perspectives without having to live them firsthand. The Twist Ending: Without spoilers, Jude shares that the final story in Shot points toward hope and change, setting it apart from the rest of the collection.  Buy Shot: A Dictionary of the Lost Amazon: https://amzn.to/4mhLS28 Bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/a/54587/9781647429287 Connect with Jude Website: https://judeberman.com/ Substack: https://judeberman.substack.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/judebermanauthor Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jude.berman/ BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/judeberman.bsky.social LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/judeberman Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jude.berman TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@judeberman YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@judeberman-author Connect with Mike Website: https://uncorkingastory.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSvS4fuG3L1JMZeOyHvfk_g Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uncorkingastory/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@uncorkingastory Twitter: https://twitter.com/uncorkingastory Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/uncorkingastory LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/uncorking-a-story/ If you like this episode, please share it with a friend. It's Back to School time…Here's 10 Reading Excuses that Don't Fly or Read On Sistah : )Saying you don't have time - Empty distractions time will rob (set a goal to read a little every day. Even if it is just a few sentences)It doesn't matter what I read - Set the bar high - be a reading snob (we become what we consume. So many great options. Follow book review youtubers you trust or The Recap Book Chat Podcast for some great recommendations)I can't remember what I read. Reading w/o reflection is like taking a shower w/o soap (book journaling and book clubs help loads in the remembering department)I'm in a reading rut, challenge yourself-you are not a dope! (Start small with something simple and fun to get the gears rolling- try audio books)I'm waiting for the perfect mood - Progress not perfection is the right direction (I believe you can learn something from every book, not just the ones you love.)  I'm behind…Comparing your reading journey to others spoils the connection (Comparison steals your joy, everyone has their own pace, be sure to honor yours.)I'm too tired/wired - Read anyway something will stick (Studies show it is super healthy for your brain to read before bed. Be sure to use a blue blocking booklight.)  I only have one speed quick quick quick, learn to savor slow, (try some classics! They were written in a much slower time and have a way of making the reader slow down as well)No, I can't explain what I read in a simple way, but AI can so what the hay (try some kid lit, it is written in easier to explain ways but can still pack a punch)I'll wait for the movie, NOT at all groovy (so many books that have been turned into movies have been altered from what the author originally intended. Why not do both! You will appreciate it in a more indepth way and can see if it lines up with what the author intended.)There is a reader inside all of us. We often suppress this desire to curl up with a book and a cup of joe or tea because we (insert excuse here) ________. Don't fall into the trap! We tend to do what is important. Carve out some reading  time, your brain will thank you!Booklight -  hooga Reading Journal - Amazon.com: Reading Journal: For the Love of Books, A Book Journal and Planner for Book Lovers to Track, Log and Review

As August 9 marks National Book Lovers Day, bookworms in Central Pennsylvania are in for more than just a reminder to curl up with their favorite read — they’re being invited to rediscover the joy, power, and importance of books through community celebrations hosted by the Dauphin County Library System and the Midtown Scholar Bookstore. "It's just a great way for us to connect with our patrons and remind them the pleasure of reading, but also the importance of literacy," said Ryan McCrory, Executive Director for the Dauphin County Library System. "It really is kind of a cornerstone of democracy." This year, National Book Lovers Day also aligns with Bookstore Romance Day, which celebrates the often-underappreciated genre of romance fiction. The Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg is marking the occasion with themed events. "At the Midtown Scholar on August 9, we will be having a blind date with a romance book and specialty coffee beverages," said Catherine Lawrence, co-owner of the bookstore. "We love books every day, but National Book Lovers Day is a special moment — and when it falls on Romance Day, it’s twice as fun."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we go over all of our April reads! It was a not so great reading month for Kyleigh as a lot of the new releases we were anticipating turned out to not be as great as expected. We also get the long awaited spring break wrap up from Hannah that we look forward to every year! Micaela read 5 books and they all were 5 stars (shocking).   Currently Reading:   Redeeming 6 by Chloe Walsh Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage Keeping 13 by Chloe Walsh Come hang out with us on Instagram!
