A recent study by the American Enterprise Institute discovered that less than 20% of computer science graduates are women, a decrease over the last several decades from over 35% in the mid-1980s. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 25% of computer and mathematical occupations in the U.S. are held by women, with some job titles, such as computer network architects, going as low as 9%. Preparing today's female students for careers in IT is of paramount importance. In this episode, we sat down with former coding educator, Jennifer Brown. Jennifer has 18 years' experience as both an educator and a trainer. She is a Global Minecraft Mentor, Microsoft Master Trainer, and Minecraft Certified trainer and has trained hundreds of teachers on game-based learning through Minecraft: Education Edition. As a former computer science and CTE teacher, Jennifer is dedicated to the ideal that all students should have access to computer science courses. As the Product Specialist for Coding in Minecraft, Jennifer continues this dedication by training teachers how they can bring computer science to their students through the engaging, game-based curriculum of Coding in Minecraft. Jennifer shares her thoughts on why girls are less likely to pursue careers in coding and IT, how educators can encourage female students to delve into the world of coding, and what resources educators can use to help bring coding to life. The final of Ireland's first national digital skills competition, Ireland's Future is MINE, is scheduled to be televised on RTÉ2 on June 16th at 5 pm. Delivered through a collaboration between Microsoft Ireland and RTÉjr, the competition's final will see St. Hugh's National Primary School from Leitrim and Moyvore Primary School from Westmeath battle it out for first place. Launched in September 2021, the ‘Ireland's Future is MINE' digital skills competition challenged primary school students to use Minecraft: Education Edition to think creatively, collaborate, problem-solve and shape Ireland's sustainable future. Since its launch, schools across Ireland have entered the competition and students have explored fun challenges such as building their own NASA rover and coding their very own polar ice hut. These challenges, made possible through Minecraft: Education Edition, are aligned to both the Republic and Northern Irish curriculums covering subjects from English, Maths, Science, Geography, SPHE and more. Delivered by Microsoft Ireland's Dream Space teachers on Dream Space TV in partnership with RTÉjr, the competition provided each school with comprehensive teaching guides to ensure that they were supported in making their submissions. Through the competition, Microsoft Ireland and RTÉ sought to inspire students to build critical in-demand skills that will allow them to compete and fully participate in today's digital world. Having successfully progressed through the various stages of the competition, which saw participation from 130 other primary schools across Ireland, St Hugh's National Primary School and Moyvore Primary School will compete in the final phase of the digital skills challenge. The winner will receive the grand prize of laptops for the classroom plus a charging trolley for their school. Commenting on the final, James O'Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Lead and Vice President of Microsoft International Operations, said: “We're delighted to see the ‘Ireland's Future is MINE' competition reach its final stages. It's been encouraging to see the level of enthusiasm from teachers and students right across the country as they competed in the competition over the last few months. At Microsoft, we are passionate about engaging students and teachers in STEM education experiences and by way of Ireland's Future is MINE and Dream Space, our innovative STEM education experience, we are empowering young people to see digital technology and STEM in exciting new ways. “In advance of the final, I'd like to wish the students of St Hugh's National Primary School and Moyvore Primary School the very best of luck.” Suzanne Kelly, Group Head of Children's and Young Peoples' Content at RTÉ, said: “We were blown away by the standard of entries from schools across the country to Ireland's Future is Mine. After months of hard work and nail-biting showdowns, just two talented schools remain in the battle for the coveted title of All-Ireland champions. RTÉ is so excited to bring you our thrilling final. This is a ‘first of its kind' esports TV broadcast and when kids see what the finalists built, we hope they will be inspired. Certainly, we've been inspired by the creativity and the fun the two teams showed in this exciting final. Don't miss it!” To view the scheduling programme for the final, visit RTÉjr here: www.rte.ie/learn/irelands-future-is-mine/
It's no secret that employers are increasingly looking for employees with coding skills. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, advanced coding and tech jobs such as software development are expected to grow 22% over the next decade. Preparing students with coding skills is no longer optional. Now, there are educators out there who know everything about coding—and then there's the rest of us—asked to teach coding because we've had limited exposure to coding in some form. So, how does someone who's not an expert teach coding like a genius? Coding in Minecraft is the answer. In this episode, we sat down with Jennifer Brown, Product Specialist for Coding in Minecraft, to dive deeper into this new program. Listen and learn about the value of coding education (and it's not always about learning to code), and how the Coding in Minecraft program can make coding accessible and fun for teachers and students everywhere. I absolutely love my job because it is always interesting and I never have the same day twice. My job is a challenge every day in trying to serve my students and teachers the best way I can. I love collaborating with the teachers at my school to promote reading and teach their grade level standards! I plan lessons with teachers to support these goals. You’ve told us that you are a presenter at conferences like the GALILEO and ISTE conferences. Tell us about those and what sort of topics you cover. This summer, I am presenting at the GALILEO Annual Conference and ISTE. My session at the GALILEO conference is about using the ebooks found within GALILEO to support standards and to personalize learning. My sessions at ISTE are about using Minecraft: Education Edition and using our learning management system to engage learners in the school library. I absolutely love learning new things at conferences and being a presenter often allows me to attend conferences I wouldn’t be able to go to otherwise! I learned when I visited you that Indian Knoll is a “Microsoft Incubator School” And you are working towards being a “Microsoft Showcase School.” Tell everyone what that means! My school is currently a Microsoft Incubator School. We have been working all year to raise our status to Microsoft Showcase School. We will apply for that this summer. Showcase Schools are basically schools that Microsoft recognizes for exceptional use of Microsoft technologies and dedication to education transformation. Part of this has been our use of Microsoft Teams. We have six digital teachers who use Teams for their daily instruction of students who are learning from home. All of our teachers used Teams when school was closed due to covid. And all of our staff has used Teams for parent conferences, IEP meetings, hosting guest readers, faculty and department meetings, author visits, technology help, etc. With everyone using Teams so much, it helps that teachers know Teams so well and are able to navigate it easily when we have big events like author visits. It has also been a great platform for including our digital learners who are at home. They can connect and be a part of what is going on at school.) You obviously use Microsoft Teams for a lot of different purposes. Do you see yourself using it as an option in the future even when we can go back to in-person gatherings? Maybe a hybrid approach to author visits? I have grown to LOVE Teams! It helps us connect to people we would not otherwise have been able to connect to in ways we wouldn’t have been able to. So I definitely think (and hope) that we will continue to use Teams for author visits even after the pandemic. Previously we used Skype to meet with authors we couldn’t see in person. But Teams allows more participants so we can include students learning from school and from home and it has a chat feature so that students and teachers can post their questions. And the teacher can vet questions before they are asked.
In this week's episode we visit with Teachers, Students and even Parents at Liberty Elementary School to discuss how, as an entire community, they have adopted Minecraft Education. As a Microsoft district we provide Minecraft for Education for all schools, at a district level, we are thrilled with Liberty that they have taken advantage of our Microsoft Partnership. Liberty Elementary is also a Showcase School for Microsoft, so they are all well versed in all the tools Microsoft offers. When you are listening to this episode, you will hear about a lot of different ways to use Minecraft: Education Edition within your classroom! You'll probably need to listen to it at least twice. In this episode, I chat with Jacob Luevano and Mike Washburn. We discuss how video games have evolved and how they have affected our students. Teacher mindset as well as how students use these skills in and out of the game are discussed and we also chat how Among Us is used in education by various educators. In addition we also talk some of our favorite video games to play during our downtime. It's a great conversation (no food in this one though...sorry) that will make you want to pick up a controller while listening. Buen provecho! I love that you can open up Minecraft Education Edition, ask yourself “What do I want to learn today?” and find something. This is just another way that the power of Minecraft and what’s been built to support Education Edition shines. When you take the best selling game ever, engage passionate people to create amazing content, and then put that content in the hands of students, you have - in my opinion - the most powerful tool for teaching and learning that exists. I didn’t know what to expect when I spoke to Sarah Red-Laird from Bee Girl. The bee content in the game is great, but as you’ll hear, Bee Girl took it and turned it into something with meaningful learning experiences for every student.Bee Girl Organization: https://www.beegirl.org/ Sarah Red-Laird on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SarahBeeGirlJoin the Minecraft Education Challenge! Welcome to episode 182 ("Awash in Digital News") of the EdTech Situation Room from July 1, 2020, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed our need for media literacy and information filtering strategies, and our ongoing "technology correction" reflected in advertiser protest pressure on Facebook for content moderation. The exciting announcement by Microsoft to offer a public beta of Minecraft Education Edition on Chromebooks, significant announcements by Apple at WWDC 2020 last week, Google's privacy changes for new users, and potential dangers of CRISPR human genome editing were other topics addressed in the show. Wes' Geeks of the Week included a support article about providing handwritten feedback on Google Docs via an iPad and Google Classroom, Google Meet tips and tricks, and Kast (a software program for watching web videos together). Jason's Geek of the Week was a new "undelete" utility for Windows10 users. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com. Please follow us on Twitter @edtechSR for updates, and join us LIVE on Wednesday nights (normally) if you can at 10 pm Eastern / 9 pm Central / 8 pm Mountain / 7 pm Pacific or 3 am UTC.
