On this week's episode, Nicole and Alanna are joined by Leslie Jacobs Toole, a local Cincinnati momma with a story to tell. She had actually followed Alanna for a while on social media and once she learned of GWGP, she reached out to share her BRCA Gene story with the gals. Being a topic both Alanna and Nicole were not very familiar with, it was a no-brainer to have her on the show. In this episode, Leslie shares with us about her long family history with breast cancer - including her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 34. After witnessing her mother's suffering, she recognized the very real possibility she could have the BRCA Gene and also develop cancer like her mother. Against her mother's blessing, Leslie got tested - and the test came back positive. Then, in 2012 at the age of 24, she took her own health into her hands and got a double mastectomy. We were so blessed that Leslie felt comfortable enough to share the vulnerable details of how cancer and BRCA has affected her life - and we think others who are in a similar position will feel comforted and seen by her kind testimony - including how neglecting her emotional healing led her down a path that eventually led to her sobriety (7 years now!) If your family has been touched by breast cancer and you're curious about the BRCA gene, then this is a wonderful conversation that you absolutely won't want to miss! Hair Ye! Hair Ye! Paul Mitchell Hair Schools Are A Winner When It Comes To Training and FUN-Raising! Giving them a huge shout out! Joining me for a fun conversation is Winn Claybaugh, the Dean & Co-Founder of Paul Mitchell Schools & the author of "Be Nice or Else". Check out the number on the check below from their recent celebrity supported event. Talk about nice! Winn ironically has no hair and was never a hairdresser, did not go to college and barely finished high school. His passion drove him to the top and he's extremely proud of his schools and students and passionate too about giving back and making a difference. Every year students and staff from 100+ Paul Mitchell Hair & Cosmetology schools around the country raise money and awareness for selected charities. Raising $5-$10 dollars at a time from cut-a-thons, hair shows and car washes they've raised over $23 Million over the years! What an accomplishment! Coming from a long line of hairdressers - I'm always interested in the hair industry. My Grandma, Aunts, Mom, were all in it and my sister in law, and daughter are in it now. (How lucky am I to have 'in-house' beauty whisperers?) Besides always being a fan of Paul Mitchell hair products - I'm so impressed with what I've been seeing them do with Paul Mitchell Schools for the greater good. School enrollment is up too because many decided as a result of the pandemic, to pursue their untapped passion in this area. That's great news for salons everywhere who like many other businesses post-pandemic, are understaffed. In addition to the above, in honor of National Ovarian and Breast Cancer Awareness month, Paul Mitchell & the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell Schools once again partnered with Bright Pink a non-profit that focuses on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancers in women. I cannot tell you how important this is! I should know! I am only here typing this because of early detection of both. I am a very grateful ovarian and breast cancer survivor. And though I enjoyed the unique freedom of having no hair for awhile like Winn ...I'm grateful to have my hair back these days to style with Paul Mitchell products.

One in eight US women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her life, and while we’ve seen a decrease in deaths thanks to advances in screening, treatment and awareness, that’s still too high. On today’s show, we ask the crucial question: what can we do to combat this disease, and how can our self-awareness of our risk, our genetic predisposition and our options aid in this effort? We have gathered an amazing group of women, with varied experiences and viewpoints to examine this: Actor, musician, activist and breast cancer survivor Rita Wilson; renowned researcher Dr. Laura Esserman, a professor of surgery and radiology at the University of California, San Francisco and the Director of the UCSF breast care clinic; Bright Pink CEO Katie Thiede; and breast cancer previvor (we’ll explain that term) and author of the “Braving BRCA” blog Sara Altschule. Host Baratunde Thurston leads an amazing conversation spanning Rita’s and Sara’s personal journeys, Katie’s ongoing advocacy, and Dr. Esserman’s industry-leading research and insight. Check out “Bigger Picture,” Rita Wilson’s amazing album inspired by her recent experiences, and catch her at Stagecoach in April 2019 (@RitaWilson on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). Our guest for today's episode shares why this is so damaging and exhausting for sisters and why we should do our best to opt out of this story. This week Patty Schmucker’s guest is Katie Thiede of Bright Pink. Together they will be discussing just what Bright Pink is doing in the fight against breast and ovarian cancer. She also speaks with Winn Claybaugh of Paul Mitchell Schools.
On this episode of Sequenced, we talk to Lindsay Avner, Founder and CEO of Bright Pink, about her journey as a BRCA mutation carrier, why she founded Bright Pink, and how women can be advocates for their own health.
Sarah Storey decided to leave a 19-year career in the for-profit world because of her personal experiences as the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. In 2014, she officially signed on as the President of Bright Pink. One of Sarah's top priorities at Bright Pink is making bold, measurable changes in the world of breast and ovarian cancer. A big part of this goal is encouraging women to take proactive measures when they're young and healthy. If you wait until you're diagnosed, the fight gets that much harder. “There are plenty of efforts that are put into treatment, advancing the cause for folks who are actually fighting the disease,” says Storey. “Those efforts are really meaningful, but we're not satisfied to wait until that point.” The more you know now, the better prepared you are to take action and reduce your risk of breast cancer. If Bright Pink didn't attempt to reach these young women, they feel it would be a missed opportunity to save lives. That sense of duty influenced the development of Bright Pink's self-assessment tool, assessyourrisk.org. Launched in 2015, over 500,000 women have taken the comprehensive, 19-question risk assessment for both breast and ovarian cancer.
The founder of Bright Pink talks about using her family history to empower her choices, fighting sexist doctors, and why privilege shouldn't be a factor in excellent medical care. The Women Promoted on This Episode: I am big student of Brené Brown's books,” says Lindsay. “ I think about the message she talks about in her latest book about how it's not about the falling down. We know everyone's going to fall down. It's about how do you pick yourself up.” Follow These People on Twitter: Women's Health: @womenshealthmag Caitlin Abber: @everydaycaitlin Lindsay Avner: @LindsayAvner Bright Pink: @BeBrightPink Tweet us using the hashtag #WHUninterrupted Episode Credits: Uninterrupted is produced by Caitlin Abber, and recorded at CBS Studios. The next time you see a leaf of shiso sitting under your sashimi, wrap it around the fish, and put it in your mouth. It’s not there just for aesthetics. “Shiso has an antiseptic property so it is safe to eat with raw fish,” said Hiroko Shimbo, the author of Hiroko’s American Kitchen and a well-known expert on Japanese cuisine. She explained that shiso has been cultivated in Japan since the 8th century, and it has long been paired with raw fish. “Most of the times I find here, in America, when the shiso is served with fish, they are just left untouched,” Shimbo said. “I advise that you will eat it and enjoy the very refreshing flavor after the fish.” The spade-shaped leaf is currently in season. Also known as perilla leaf or ooba, it’s related to mint, though Shimbo said it tastes nothing like that herb or basil. She added that green shiso has a stronger, fresh herbal flavor, than the purple variety, which is used to make pickled and dried plums known as umeboshi. “[It’s] always used fresh, as a whole leaf... or chopped fine, or julienned, and then [used to] garnish the dish,” Shimbo said, adding that Japanese cuisine also uses tiny shiso flowers for both aesthetics and flavor. She recommends getting shiso at farmers markets when possible, rather than Japanese grocery stores, where the shiso sometimes seems more industrially produced and less flavorful as a result. “I get amazing, fantastic quality of shiso [at farmers markets],” Shimbo said. “And there are several vendors [that] carry the shiso in Union Square and the one that I love the most is… Two Guys From Woodbridge.” (Photo: Hiroko Shimbo/Courtesy of Hiroko Shimbo) Tomorrow, Saturday, September 14, Shimbo will be at the Union Square farmers market for a book signing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. She will also be sharing samples of shiso juice, which she explained is currently popular in Japan. Don’t be shocked if the color of the shiso juice reminds you of the pink slime that took over New York City in Ghostbusters II. The color is a caused by anthocyanin, a water-soluble pigment in shiso that reacts with acid. So, not evil at all. “I first… infused water with the shiso, then add lime juice,” Shimbo said. “The acid just quickly turns crystal clear–colored juice to this color.” Try making it yourself as a fun home science experiment. Shimbo’s recipe is below, and the resulting juice tastes like lemonade with a slight herbal kick. Shiso Juice 1 bunch shiso from the Green Market, pick all of the leaves 3 cups water 6-8 tablespoons lime juice 1 to 1 1/2 cups simple syrup (You can use citric acid, as well.) Rinse the shiso leaves under running water. Bring the water in a pot to a boil. Turn the heat to low-medium, add the shiso leaves to the pot and infuse the water for about 5 to 8 minutes. Strain the shiso-infused water into a clean jar, discarding or preserving the leaves. Add the lime juice to the jar. The shiso leaves infused water turns to beautiful purple color. Add the simple syrup to the jar to your taste and keep the jar in the refrigerator, or freeze it if you are not consuming it within 3 days. When serving add 1/5 of the sweetened shiso juice to a glass cup. Fill the glass with flat or carbonated ice cold water.
