The Making of FOOLISH by Superchunk - featuring Mac McCaughan, Laura Ballance and Jim Wilbur

For the 30th anniversary of Superchunk's fourth album, FOOLISH, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Superchunk got their start in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989, they were becoming known for their catchy punk anthems and busy touring schedule. Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance had been a couple and formed Merge Records initially as a way to release their early singles, while releasing their full-length albums on Matador Records. Around the time of their third album, ON THE MOUTH, McCaughan and Ballance ended their romantic relationship, causing tension and uncertainty about the future of the band, as well as Merge. The inner-band turmoil impacted the songs they were writing, as McCaughan wrote lyrics from a vulnerable place while they also worked to expand their sound, incorporating more dynamics, new guitar textures and slower tempos. They booked studio time at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota with Brian Paulson, who they had wanted to work with after hearing records he made with Slint and Unrest. Their breakneck three-day session resulted in FOOLISH, eventually released in 1994. In this episode, Mac McCaughan describes his intention to do something different musically with this record and how he was incorporating more clean guitar tones and space than ever before. Laura Ballance talks about hearing McCaughan's lyrics for the first time in the studio and how she felt attacked as she interpreted them as being about her or about their relationship. Jim Wilbur gives his perspective on this tumultuous time in the band's history, but how they were able to remain collaborative as a unit and write many songs quickly. From treating the band like a job to losing a day in the studio to writing on acoustic guitars to an ambitious and tense video shoot to the story behind the album cover to a breakup record with some of Superchunk's most enduring songs, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

Bison herd helps restore Prairie Island community

Updated: 11:17 a.m.Paul Dressen stands on the back of a flatbed truck as it moves slowly by bison cows and their calves grazing from hay bales in their winter pasture. They are much more than livestock. Dressen calls them his relatives.“I think it's really important to understand that we as Dakota people here on our homelands, we have had a 10,000-year relationship with our relatives,” said Dressen, the education director at Prairie Island Indian Community. He explains that Dakota people, among others, see their relationship with bison as reciprocal — each caring for the other. In 1992, the community near Red Wing was gifted a bull named Shooting Star. A short time later, they purchased two bison cows. The community now cares for a large herd on a 110-acre farm along the Mississippi River.Dressen says the return of bison to the river valley is just one sign of health here.“Thanks to the commitment of our elders, our veterans and our community members and tribal council, today we have a herd of at least 300,” said Dressen. “We have at least 70 babies this year. So as our community came back home and started to grow, it also mirrored our relatives coming back also. And today, both the community and the buffalo here at Prairie Island are flourishing.”In the decades since Prairie Island established its bison herd, tribal nations have worked to get U.S. Department of Agriculture support for the growing and processing of Indigenous foods. And they want more say in how those systems operate.Advocates say tribal self-governance under the farm bill means that tribes would manage their own programs after agreeing to comply with USDA standards. It's part of an effort to reclaim food sovereignty or control over production and distribution of the foods that sustained communities for generations including before colonization. In 2018, the Native Farm Bill Coalition (NFBC) advocated for a pilot project that supported the purchase of traditional foods.Eight tribes were allowed to purchase Indigenous foods outside those vendors approved by the USDA. The coalition and others would like to see the program expanded to include all tribal nations across the country. For Prairie Island, it could mean contracts with the USDA that would offset the costs of their operation and increase sales and trade opportunities. The coalition said the USDA spent $4 billion in tribal communities nationwide in fiscal year 2022, but only a fraction of that spending went to contracts with Indigenous farmers and producers. At the White House Tribal Nations Summit this week, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a pilot program for the purchase of bison and other wild meats. The program will create public-private partnerships to expand purchasing power for tribal bison producers. Vilsack said the pilots could inform changes in the farm bill when Congress takes up re-authorization in the coming year.Others are rethinking how the meat inspection system could help bison producers. Carly Hotvedt with the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative said rather than using the fee for service for federal inspectors, tribal nations could “adopt a food safety code that would be in parity with federal standards. There would be some flexibility for tribes to determine how and what funding that they would use to support bison processing.”Hotvedt said that could reduce the costs for tribal producers engaging in bison production.“It would allow for that inspection standard to be able to enter those bison in interstate commerce. And it would allow tribes to source bison products for federal nutrition programs as well,” said Hotvedt. There's also a proposal to give more access to USDA conservation programs. Prairie Island uses federal government assistance to prevent overgrazing.Gabe Miller, director of land and environment for Prairie Island, said funding from USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Services has already helped the community create a rotational grazing program for bison, making “that whole area more productive for forage.”Prairie Island harvests mature buffalo several times a year. The meat is processed at a nearby facility in Cannon Falls.Paul Dressen said the community's relationship with bison is key to reclaiming an overall sense of health.“There were 300 years of a real struggle to ... even survive.”He points out 4,000 pounds of bison meat is making its way into freezers in Prairie Island this winter to give community members “access to that food sovereignty.” Correction (Dec. 8, 2023): A previous version incorrectly described Paul Dressen as a Prairie Island Community member in a photo caption. Also a caption gave the wrong first name for Nicky Buck. The above story has been updated.

Artist and educator Preston Drum of Burnsville recommends a visit to the Rochester Art Center.  He highlights two solo shows by Minneapolis College of Art and Design graduates, Roshan Ganu and Ivonne Yáñez. Roshan Ganu's show “जत्रा (Ja-tra) : A Feeling At The Beginning Of Time” is one large artwork in a space that is made up of various mirrors, projections and animation. It's a multi-sensory installation, with sounds of vendor calls and sung prayers. जत्रा' (“ja-tra”) is a Marathi word for a town or village fair. The installation feels carnivalesque, with thousands of tiny interactions that you can choose to focus on specifically or let wash over you. Drum says it feels “as though you were walking into a time-traveling / space-traveling device. And when you walk inside, it's kind of like you're being teleported to India, but also in India in different times.” Ganu, who is the 2022-23 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellow, will participate in an artist spotlight tour Saturday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. The show runs until Nov. 5. Ivonne Yáñez's show “Like a Little Tlaquepaque Vase or Como Jarrito de Tlaquepaque” is an intimate show that Drum says is “full of little hidden treasures to discover.” The title of the show refers to a phrase in Spanish that describes an overly sensitive person. Here, brightly colored vases are made of bright, shimmery fabric. The ceiling and walls of the room are hung with sculptures, which feature detailed embroidery work, images of tarot cards and Mexican lottery games. Drum appreciates the juxtaposition of real human-made plants and the way all the elements work together. This show runs through Jan. 21.Lisa Hartwig of Hudson, Wis., loves to attend the Sogn Valley Art Fair (pronounced “so-gun”), which holds its 51st annual event this weekend in Cannon Falls. She appreciates the high level of quality of the art, ranging from pottery to jewelry, from painting to printmaking. More than 50 artists' work is on view. Hudson describes it as a park-and-walk event that feels like a street festival and is anchored by the printmaking nonprofit ArtOrg.  “I think it's such a nice community and it's such lovely work that you can't beat it,” Hartwig says.  The art fair is Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alexander Jabbari, assistant professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota, is looking forward to the Mehtegan Fall Iranian Culture Festival this Saturday in St. Paul. The event, which is open to all, features Iranian music, dance and food. He's particularly excited to see Twin Cities-based singer-songwriter Marjan Farsad, who sings in Persian in a style he describes as “dreamy indie pop.” Farsad will perform at 1:30 p.m., ahead of a national tour. She will also perform at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis on Nov. 5. Other musical performances include piano, the poetry of Omar Khayyam set to setar, and a DJ playing Persian pop in the evening. There will also be tea and Iranian food for sale.   Marjan Farsad

Updated: 3:33 p.m. Theater lover Katie Fetterly of St. Paul calls “Arla Mae's Booyah Wagon,” a traveling musical comedy celebrating the joy of local food, “adorable” and “hilarious.” Booyah is a hearty stew —and a specialty of Arla Mae's traveling food wagon. The show is performed at different local farms, and most performances feature a booyah tasting. Sarah Agnew directed and performs in the show, and she also created the booyah recipe with culinary advice from James Beard award-winning chef Ann Kim of Young Joni and other restaurants in Minneapolis.  “Arla Mae” travels to Ferndale Market in Cannon Falls at 6 p.m Thursday and to Pleasant Grove Pizza Farm in Waseca on Friday. The production moves to Dream Acres Farm in Spring Valley on Saturday and Big Raven Farm in Spring Grove Sunday. The following week performances are scheduled in Oronoco, Red Wing and Northfield. Musician Mischa Suemnig of Plymouth is excited for a quadruple album release concert by four Minnesota musicians Saturday. Justin Bell and the Lazy Susan Band, the Jonathan Earl band, Sarah VanValkenburg and Samuel J. DuBois all have albums coming out. Suemnig wants to hear new music performed live and “the pent-up anxiety and energy we all have from COVID directed in a positive way” by musicians he admires. The show is Saturday at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul. The venue requires proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test from within 72 hours. Comedian Emma Dahlenberg felt like she'd stumbled upon a real gem when she performed at the Club Underground of the Spring Street Tavern in Minneapolis a few months ago. She loves the lighting, the feeling of intimacy with the audience in the low ceiling space. The venue runs a regular Monday Night Comedy Show starting at 7 p.m. In October, each comedy night will have a theme for the comedians to follow, starting Oct. 4 with “alien abduction night.” Upcoming themes include super villains and character night, as well as one night each of “clean” and “dirty” humor. “I think it would be really fun as an audience member,” says Dahlenberg, “because you're seeing the comedians have fun in a way that they don't normally do,” as they try out new material to fit each theme. Correction (Sept. 30, 2021): An earlier version of this story misstated Ann Kim's role in the production "Arla Mae's Booyah Wagon.” The article has been updated.

Everynight Fire Works is the debut album by American rock band Hey Mercedes. Following the demise of Braid, most of the members formed Hey Mercedes, with guitarist Mark Dawursk joining in early 2000. The band released a self-titled EP through Polyvinyl Record Co., before signing to Vagrant Records at the end of the year. They recorded their debut with Burning Airlines member J. Robbins at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota in April 2001. Everynight Fire Works is an alternative rock, emo, indie rock and pop punk record that drew comparisons to Burning Airlines, Jets to Brazil, and Shudder to Think. Everynight Fire Works was announced for release shortly after recording, but was delayed a few times distribution troubles or legal issues that Vagrant was having. It was eventually released on October 23, where it was met with a mixed-to-positive reaction from music critics, with some commenting on the group's maturity and guitar work, as well as Nanna's vocals. Sometime after release, Dawursk left the band and was replaced with Michael Shumaker, and drummer Damon Atkinson spent some time touring with Saves the Day. The band went on two stints of the US, one as part of the Vagrant America arena tour, with other acts on the label. In all, Everynight Fire Works was promoted with over 200 shows.

www.bullythemusic.comA very old saying goes that no one saves us but ourselves. Recognizing and breaking free from the patterns impeding our forward progress can be transformative — just ask Bully's Alicia Bognanno. Indeed, the third Bully album, SUGAREGG , may not ever have come to fruition had Bognanno not navigated every kind of upheaval imaginable and completely overhauled her working process along the way.“There was change that needed to happen and it happened on this record,” she says. “Derailing my ego and insecurities allowed me to give these songs the attention they deserved.”SUGAREGG roars from the speakers and jumpstarts both heart and mind. Like My Bloody Valentine after three double espressos, opener “Add It On” zooms heavenward within seconds, epitomizing Bognanno's newfound clarity of purpose, while the bass-driven melodies and propulsive beats of “Where to Start” and “Let You” are the musical equivalents of the sun piercing through a perpetually cloudy sky.On songs like the strident “Every Tradition” and “Not Ashamed,” Bognanno doesn't shy away from addressing “how I feel as a human holds up against what society expects or assumes of me as a woman, and what it feels like to naturally challenge those expectations.”But amongst the more dense topics, there's also a lightheartedness that was lacking on Bully's last album, 2017's Losing . Pointing to “Where to Start,” “You” and “Let You,” Bognanno says “there are more songs about erratic, dysfunctional love in an upbeat way, like, ‘I'm going down and that's the only way I want to go because the momentary joy is worth it.'”The artist admits that finding the proper treatment for bipolar 2 disorder radically altered her mindset, freeing her from a cycle of paranoia and insecurity about her work. “Being able to finally navigate that opened the door for me to write about it,” she says, pointing to the sweet, swirly “Like Fire” and slower, more contemplative songs such as “Prism” and “Come Down” as having been born of this new headspace. Even small changes like listening to music instead of the news first thing in the morning “made me want to write and bring that pleasure to other people.”An unexpected foray into the film world also helped set the table for Sugaregg when Bognanno was asked to write songs for the 2019 movie Her Smell , starring Elisabeth Moss as the frontwoman of the fictional rock band Something She. “It got me motivated to play music again after the last album,” she says. “I loved reading the script and trying to think, what music would the character write? People asked if I'd play those songs with Bully but the whole point was for them to not be Bully songs. It was nice to get my head out of my own ass for a second and work on a project for someone else,” she says with a laugh.A highly accomplished engineer who ran the boards herself on the first two Bully albums, Bognanno was ready to be free “from the weight of feeling like I had to prove to the world I was capable of engineering a record, and wanted to be content knowing for myself what I can do without needing the approval of others to validate that.”So for SUGAREGG , she yielded recording and mixing responsibilities to outside collaborators for the first time and trekked to the remote Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minn., an unexpected return to her home state. Behind the console was John Congleton, a Grammy-winner who has worked with everyone from St. Vincent and Sleater-Kinney to The War on Drugs and Modest Mouse. “Naturally, I still had reservations, but John was sensitive to where I was coming from,” Bognanno says. “He was very respectful that I'd never worked with a producer before.”The studio's rich history (classics such as Nirvana's In Utero, PJ Harvey's Rid of Me and Superchunk's Foolish were recorded there) and woodsy setting quickly put Bognanno's mind at ease. Being able to bring her dog Mezzi along for the trip didn't hurt either. “I had never tracked a record in the summer, so waking up and going outside with her before we started each day was a great way to refresh,” she says.SUGAREGG features additional contributions from longtime touring drummer Wesley Mitchell and bassist Zach Dawes, renowned for his work on recent albums by Sharon Van Etten and Lana Del Rey. Dawes and Bognanno met at Pachyderm to work on parts just two days before tracking, “but it ended up being so much less stressful than I had expected and I loved it,” she says. “Zach wanted to be there to help and make my vision happen.”With 14 songs on tape, Bognanno and friends left Pachyderm thinking SUGAREGG was done. But once back home in Nashville, she realized there was more to be written, and spent the next five months doing exactly that. Moving to Palace Studios in Toronto with Graham Walsh (Alvvays, METZ, !!!), Bognanno and Mitchell recorded “Where to Start” and “Let You,” which proved to be two of the new album's key tracks.Ultimately, SUGAREGG is a testament that profound change can yield profound results — in this case, the most expressive and powerful music of Bognanno's career. “This is me longing to see the bigger picture, motivated and eager for contentment in the best way,” she says. “I hope the happy go lucky / fuck-it-all attitude shines through some of these songs because I really did feel like I was reentering a place I hadn't been to in a while and was excited to be back there.”

Mike Augustyniak with WCCO Television Weather. The temperature change today versus yesterday iin the Twin Cities is zero. hinckley's at 50 away from the lake influence but also away from some clouds that have built built up.   Twin Cities at 54 and that's about the warmest number we can find in the region right now.  check in with some of the water Watchers and they're reporting a lot of 40s and 50s 51 both in Rochester and pictures of exit 46 set Charlie's place in oil and 49 from Alexandria down the road to Cold Spring and in Chanhassen and Cannon Falls is 52. years a wider view here of the satellite. you can see how we had these clouds build up across the sea lie and Lutsen in and talk to Rice Lake in Eau Claire sort of on the cloud line to a little bit of Honey breaks in the cloud.   and then here in the Twin Cities little more than just partly cloudy skies in many cases. with time high pressure is going to build into the rest of the afternoon and start to scour these low clouds out that leave this to a cold overnight tonight and it's chilly is it has been here I don't know if this helps or not but we are not alone it has been very cold to the Great Lake States and into the Northeast over the past several months and it looks like that will continue at least over the next week. so high temperature forecast today only a few degrees milder than we are right now should get up to about 58 in the Twin Cities but note the wind North it 15 to 20 that will stick around all day today and that will make these temperatures feel a bit cooler particularly if you're in some of those cloudy or areas or at least in areas were clouds linger a bit later into the afternoon. overnight tonight I am pretty certain that we will get another frost advisory out across the region including the Twin Cities down to 36 that's my forecast low and so so far much of Hennepin in Ramsey County has escaped Frost this week, tonight I don't think that will be the case I think we will get frosted even here in the downtown areas and some twenties around from Hayward to Rice Lake end in Grand Rapids on Saturday which by the way will be mostly sunny in much of the area few high clouds to start the day early in the morning to the west and southwest but those clouds will thicken up with time as we go through the morning until while will be closer to 60 today in places like Worthington in Marshall tomorrow it'll be about 10 degrees cooler while a lot of the rest of the region will have a similar feeling today. tomorrow hours thickening up quickly from the Minnesota River Valley on South and West will start to see dark clouds fill in as we go through the mid-to-late afternoon and especially from the Minnesota River Valley South and West. now there's a chance there's some suggestion that this band of rain will be about fifty miles farther north east end of the evening Twin Cities metro particularly the Southwest Metro could see some rain showers. that's the less likely scenario right now but it is still possible but again bring umbrellas from Marshall to Mankato even though it's not coming up there probably until after dark tomorrow night. then quickly do showers go away Sunday morning we're sort of squeeze between two storm systems. one that could bring some rain showers once again during the day in the far south western and southern part of Minnesota and maybe some drizzle up around the North Shore or low clouds will build in through the day here in central Minnesota East Central Minnesota and Wisconsin. I think it's going to be more names of clouds and sun both weekend days chili only near 60 keep in mind are advertised climbing to near 70 in the next week or so and there's no sign of that in the short-term here Monday. Tuesday warming a little bit, Wednesday perhaps a rain shower and then Thursday and hopefully fingers crossed next Friday Saturday Sunday near 70. we have been seeing that kind of pop up in the extended forecast for the past couple of weekends and as we get closer it just goes away. I don't know if that will happen this time but it again at least the signs now or pointing toward a little bit of a warmer stretch. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Coming in at No. 8 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums list is the 1993 record from Nirvana, In Utero. Joining Bakko this week is the host of Damn Good Movie Memories, Brian Davis. Brian and Bakko get into the details of the making of the follow up to the game changing Nevermind. In Utero is the third and final studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, by DGC Records. The band intended for the record to be a departure from the polished sound of its predecessor, Nevermind. Early in 1992, frontman Kurt Cobain stated that In Utero would showcase "both of the extremes" of Nirvana's sound, saying "it'll be more raw with some songs and more candy pop on some of the others. It won't be as one-dimensional as Nevermind". To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, Nirvana hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The music was quickly recorded within that time with few studio embellishments. The lyrics and album packaging largely incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and his band's newfound fame. https://damngoodmoviememories.podbean.com/

Escuchar audio

Our very first guest is Dave Flom, who is the head boys varsity basketball coach at Eden Prairie High School here in Minnesota which is one of the largest high schools in the state.  This season coach Flom and his team were having a dream season.  They had 4 senior starters on the team that eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in their careers and were sitting at an overall record of 28-0, ranked #1 in class 4A, the largest class in MN and were ranked #10 nationally by ESPN.  Their season ended abruptly before they were able to play their section final matchup, leaving them short of fulfilling the season long dream of winning a state championship.  Like many basketball teams across the country they didn't get to finish their season but coach Flom takes us through their season and how they handled the disappointment at the end of the year.  Coach Flom was a standout athlete at Cannon Falls high school, a small town in southern MN, and went on to play college baseball and basketball at Division 3 Gustavus.  It was on that path that he discovered he wanted to pursue coaching.  Enjoy this conversation with Eden Prairie boys head coach Dave Flom.7:46 = Dave's college experience at Gustavus22:11 = Eden Prairie the early years and building the program38:17 = The 2019-20 EP season53:06 = Disappointment of season ending prematurely1:04:30 = Dream basketball starting 51:06:17 = Unbeliveable story about Trent Tucker, beating him in 1-on-1 and Trent bringing Dave to New York for a Knicks game

This has never been asked of Obama and never answered, so far as I know. And chances are he won't answer it definitively when he unveils his new jobs program before a joint session of Congress this week. But there are big clues from his prior policies and the batch of ideas now emanating from the White House. The president believes government is the premier job creator. Why? One reason is government understands markets better than the private sector, so long as the right people are in charge, like Obama himself. “You can't just make money on SUVs and trucks,” he said at a town hall meeting in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, on August 15. “As gas prices keep going up, you've got to understand the market.” Having bailed out Chrysler and GM, he instructed them to invest in electric cars and added, “We put investments” in advanced batteries. “It creates jobs.”
