Ditch the Sales Pitch and Generate Leads Through Educational Podcasts with Bob Sparkins

A big pain point for small business owners is generating enough leads. What if there was a free educational resource and a tool to help do that? Bob Sparkins is the lead evangelist for Leadpages a software platform that helps generate leads by building landing pages, campaigns, and even creating text opt-ins for podcasters. It’s Bob’s job to spread the word about Leadpages.  Bob is a speaker, webinar presenter, and marketing teacher. He is also the host of The Lead Generation Podcast a podcast that shares marketing wisdom and educates small business owners, coaches, and consultants. This podcast is the second incarnation of the Leadpages podcast. The first Leadpages podcast was called Conversion Cast and featured professional voice artist Tim Paige.  Bob was able to convince his boss at Leadpages that they needed to restart their podcast, and he was the guy to do it. The focus of his show is educating small business owners through interviews of people who have overcome obstacles in their businesses. He is also an entrepreneur, so he thought he would be the perfect host for this show.  This podcast generates leads for Leadpages, but not in the way you would think. The show is purely educational with no sales pitch. Leads are generated when interested listeners go to the podcast website to learn more. Bob is no stranger to education. He is a former high school history teacher. On this episode, he explains the evolution and purpose of his podcast, his setup, benefits of the podcast, and shares a little bit about Leadpages.  Bob is the author of Take Action! Revise Later: A Simple Guide to Success in Business, and he lives in Bloomington, Minnesota with his wife and their two kids. You may have heard of Bob through his social handle Bob the Teacher. Show Notes: [04:03] The Leadpages Podcast has always been an opportunity to share marketing wisdom and knowledge with small businesses, entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants and people doing own marketing.  [04:29] Leadpages was founded by Clay Collins. He hired Tim Paige to start the Leadpages podcast called Conversion Cast. They had 180 episodes over four years. [05:31] Tim left and Bob took over the podcast. They first went YouTube style for a studio podcast. This only lasted 12 episodes, and then they pursued other content marketing.  [06:17] In february of this year, Bob wanted to start the podcast again. He wanted to target people who are doing their best to ramp up their digital marketing knowledge. People who are their own brand. They called their core avatar the Lead Generation. They just released episode 29 of The Lead Generation Podcast.  [07:35] The podcast is promotionally adjacent to Leadpages. [08:03] Most of the guests are Leadpages clients. Some are well known like Pat Flynn and Ramon Ray and on the rise like ChihYu Smith. [10:32] They keep track of the stats and traffic generated by the podcast, and it's also an opportunity to leverage the audience.  [11:22] They do use retargeting and ads.  [12:33] Any room can give a great sound.  [13:18] Their office was a WeWork space. The glass presents sound challenges. Now it's a room in Bob's house. The microphone is on an arm and Bob can stand. He uses a Yeti mic which is prone to pick up external noises.  [16:00] The visual show took too much time and effort to pursue at the level they wanted to do it at.  [16:41] Bob is responsible for championing the software and the success that the customer's have.  [17:00] He also uses his microphone set up for webinars. He uses Leadpages for getting podcast guests. The thank you page includes a Google form and a booking calendar. He also uses Zoom and Calendly.  [19:38] The post show followup includes an affiliate link and photos for social.  [21:34] Bob pushed for restarting the podcast. He is his audiences avatar. He's familiar with what it's like to be responsible for your own revenue.  [22:58] He also was part of the making of the Lead Evangelist role. He was also customer number 43. [24:02] Being flexible in the questioning makes a good podcast host. [24:59] Bob was the logical choice to be the host of the podcast.  [26:22] Leadpages provides the software that small business owners can use to build their website, make campaigns and landing pages, and to easily generate leads from their podcast with opt-in text. [27:13] They try to keep things streamlined and function well with other software products. They are cloud based and super reliable. It's an easy way to get your web presence up and running and to create campaigns.  [29:43] The podcast generates lead, but they aren't heavily selling in the content.  [30:28] Their target audience are people who specifically need education and better tools.  [33:02] Podcasts give great content that is leverageable with show notes and transcripts for search engines and education. [33:14] Pro Podcast Solutions edits the audio. Bob gets his transcripts from Rev.com, he then edits and pulls out some takeaways and headings. They have a designer create a thumbnail, and they create an audiogram. [38:29] Bob is currently reading Superfans. He recommends Influence.  [41:19] Bob's parents taught him to be self-reliant and to do the work. [42:45] Bob's dad taught him to change oil, but he didn't need that because he was going to delegate.  [45:23] Darrell's takeaways: Keep it simple. Bob had the skill set needed to revive and keep the podcast going, and he convinced the higher ups of this. They have a unique take on using transcripts as show notes by creating subtitles and including keywords. His parents reinforced his eagerness to delegate. Do what you do best and hire out.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions Libsyn Use promo code ProPod to receive the rest of the current month and entire next month free Leadpages Bob The Teacher Sparkins on LinkedIn Bob Sparkins on Twitter The Lead Generation Podcast Take Action! Our inaugural episode of The Lead Generation Podcast is here, taking the baton from the success of the ConversionCast show. Hosted by Bob Sparkins, the Lead Evangelist at Leadpages, The Lead Generation features conversations with today's entrepreneurs willing to tell the truth about what it takes to be your own boss and why they wouldn't have it any other way.   In this episode, we're bringing to you the growth story of long-time Leadpages member, partner, and advisor Pat Flynn.  For show notes and more, go to leadpages.com/podcast    Pat is the founder of Smart Passive Income, a prolific podcaster, and internet marketing thought leader. This year, he adds Inventor and Live Event Host to his credentials.    In this episode, Pat shares the entrepreneurial journey he's been on since he was fired from his promising day job, and the frustrations and lessons he's learned along the way. He also shares a behind the scenes look at the launch of his new tripod for vloggers, the work going into putting together his first live event, and what he thinks about attempting to achieve work/life balance.   Top Takeaways from This Episode Serve first. Based on your own expertise, create content that truly serves people by solving the problems they are currently facing. Turn your best solution ideas into products and services that drive revenue. You'll encounter frustrations and setbacks as an entrepreneur. But you can lessen the severity of these by seeking feedback from key people in your life earlier, and asking talented people for help in areas that you're not an expert.  Don't wait until some time in the future to start an email list. Start right away, even if you don't quite know where your business is truly headed.  Instead of trying to attain an impossible work/life balance, create your business in such a way that can bring your family closer together so their involvement can be higher, and their understanding of what you're up to can be sincere. When thinking through your next business venture, pretend that you're in front of the investors on Shark Tank and imagine the kinds of questions they would ask of your business idea. The product you currently (or will soon) offer is the start of a relationship, not the end.

Welcome to an entertaining show with my guest, Tim Paige. As the Senior Conversion Educator at Leadpages, Tim helps marketers increase conversions and utilize behavioral marketing. You can hear Tim on his podcast, Conversion Cast, or on one of the 750 webinars he’s hosted in the last three years. The most important roles in his life are those of a husband and father who eats, sleeps, and breathes Syracuse Orange basketball. Tim is an all-around nice guy with hilarious voice over skills, so join us for more! TWEET: “Talking #entrepreneurship, #conversions and #SyracuseOrange with @TimThePaige!” Figuring out what’s next: We’ve all had those moments, right? One phase of life comes to a close and we know we’re supposed to move on, but How? Where? When? Tim felt the uncertainty when his rock band days ended and he felt the entrepreneurial pull but wasn’t sure what to do next. He made the mistake of defaulting to what he  always did to “make money.” He took a sales commission job that provided a good income but sucked the joy and happiness out of him. It wasn’t until he understood the concept of “passive income” that he made the leap to start a podcast and soon exploded into the voice over world. TWEET: “I started losing part of myself and had to figure out what’s next.”       @TimThePaige   How things sometimes just “fall into place”: We all know those people for whom life seems easy and just seems to fall into place perfectly. Most likely, though, they have worked hard behind the scenes to get where they are. Tim explains how his unique skill set in the realm of networking and marketing has aided him in meeting the right people and just the right time. The key to this is relating to people and caring about them. Tim has met and befriended some wonderful people because they are cool and he wanted to get to know them, and not because he was looking to get something out of them. It’s all about relationships! TWEET: “Focus on relating to #people and you’ll find incredible #relationships.” @TimThePaige   You don’t HAVE to be an entrepreneur! What? Today’s business and life coaches will make you think that entrepreneurship is the ONLY way to be happy, fulfilled, and satisfied. Tim says this is not so! His role at Leadpages is an entrepreneurial one, but he shares why he is happy at his 9-5 job, doing what he loves to do. Not everyone is cut out for entrepreneurship, but many people pressure themselves and get caught up in having to be an entrepreneur. It’s all about keeping your life in alignment. TWEET: “Without #debt, the runway to get where you want is MUCH shorter.” @TimThePaige GUEST RECOMMENDATION: “Do everything you can to get out of debt if you’re in debt. It’s the number one thing you can do to free yourself up to make decisions about your future without being held back.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:10] Where do the voices come from? [5:45] From rock star to voice over guy [10:25] The transition into Leadpages and webinars [13:55] How thing “fell into place” for Tim [16:45] It’s all about relationships [18:55] Letting things evolve—from where you are NOW [20:05] Why it’s OK to work for someone else [21:10] A crazy “What If” scenario for Tim [25:38] Tim’s Recommendation: Get out of debt and don’t let rejection get you down!   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Tim on Twitter Tim on Facebook Tim at Leadpages Tim’s Voiceover Website Tim’s Podcast   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: “Keep at it, get better, do your thing, and hope for the best.” @TimThePaige TWEET: “Do everything you can to get out of #debt if you are in #debt!” @TimThePaige

Things quickly evolved as Valerie began being approached by other business owners to help with their social media marketing. Having had a desire to go out on her own for some time, she saw an opportunity to make it happen. Mindset: While Valerie considers herself an introvert and feels much more comfortable behind a computer, she knew that she needed to get out of her comfort zone if she was going to grow, both personally and professionally. Listen as she shares the story of the first big event she ever attended as an entrepreneur and how it changed her business and network. Marketing: Even as a Facebook Ads expert, Valerie has never run a Facebook ad for her own business. Networking has been the biggest driver in her business by allowing her to connect with clients as well as referral partners. Momentum:  After following the advice of her business coach, Valerie went from being an online marketer to a Facebook Expert. It was this decision to niche down that boosted the momentum for her business. From there, she implemented the Anchor Client Strategy to run Facebook Ads for big names like John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur on Fire and Nick Unsworth of Life on Fire. I know that I've talked a lot with you about webinars this year. The fact is that I've been learning a ton about them myself, and every time I learn a new technique or crack the code on a revenue-boosting system, I can't help but pass it on to you! This week, though, I'm doing something a little different. Rather than walk you through a step-by-step system, I'm going to focus with you on one very specific strategy that I learned from Tim Paige, the host of the podcast Conversion Cast and the leader of all LeadPages webinars. Today is all about an engagement strategy that I've just begun applying it to my webinars. I’ll be sure to let you know how it's going, once I really get it off the ground. But I'll be completely honest with you: it's a little awkward, in the beginning. I've done a lot of webinars, and I still am finding my sweet spot. The thing is that Tim, in addition to being a pal, is a true webinar ninja. This man has done 410 webinars to date! (Who knows--he may be up to more, by the time this episode airs.) No joke--his application is pending for the Guinness Book of World Records for most webinars done in a 12-month period. This is a guy who really knows the ins and outs of webinar success. So when he tells me this strategy is worth working through, I believe it! Listen to the full episode to get all the details on this amazing strategy from Tim Paige. You can also check out Tim putting this revolutionary engagement strategy into action--just click here to join his latest webinar. EPISODE FREEBIE Get Amy and Tim's Engagement Focused Webinar FREE DOWNLOAD We all know how important engagement is for our webinars. There's nothing worse than crafting and delivering a dynamic, informative presentation only to hear crickets during the Q&A. Scratch that--there is one thing worse: delivering your presentation and seeing only a faint dribble of sales by the time you log off for the day. What you're looking for is that special spark that sets fire to your content and gets your audience fired up in response to it. Early on, I wanted to test the idea of taking every opportunity I could throughout the process of presenting a webinar to look over in the questions box and start answering questions live as we went, as long as they were relevant and weren’t off topic. I found in answering questions, not only did I see a 98% stick rate (98% of the people that joined the webinar in the beginning stuck around all the way until the end) but in one split test I also saw a tripled revenue from one webinar to the next." Um...did you get all that? A 98% stick rate and a 300% revenue increase? I'd say this strategy is well worth trying, wouldn't you?So how does this work? If you're like me, you may be already thinking about how taking questions in the middle of your presentation will interrupt your flow. What if the questions make me get ahead of myself? Am I allowed to not answer questions if they aren't on topic? How is this supposed to work with replays and automated webinars? ...And just what is it about this strategy that makes it so incredibly powerful? Listen to the full episode for all the answers--it's a short but intense masterclass on a single technique that is a true webinar game changer. Today I’m really pleased to have Tim Paige on the show. Tim is the Conversion Educator at LeadPages. As he describes it, his job is to help marketers get better results with their business by building and growing their email lists.  He’s also the host of ConversionCast, an excellent podcast all about email marketing.    You’re a writer, so why should you build an email list?    That’s exactly what we cover in the first part of our conversation.  Tim explains why, as a writer, you need to build an audience that you can communicate with whenever you have something to say, share, or sell.   But we don’t stop at the why of building an email list, of course. Tim shares four strategies you can start using now to build your email list. And if you’ve already started to build a list, his strategies can help you substantially speed up the process.    He also shares a few copywriting tips for writing emails that subscribers will actually want to open and read.    Before we dive into the conversation, let me tell you about a free 9-part video course that the experts at LeadPages have put together. And it’s all about building and cultivating an email list.   You can find it by heading over to writewithimpact.com/emailcourse.    That’ll take you to the course on LeadPages’ website.  I’ve gone through it and there’s a ton of value in there, easily worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars.  And it’s entirely free.      You can also find more information about Tim with links to his website over at writewithimpact.com/episode26. There you can pick up a few of my writing tips as well.   Follow Write With Impact on Twitter @impactfulwriter   Like Write With Impact on Facebook

The SuccessLab Podcast: Where Entrepreneurs Collaborate for Success

In this episode of the SuccessLab Podcast I'm in The Lab with Tim Paige, the Conversion Educator at LeadPages and the Conversion Cast podcast. We talk about how to effectively use LeadPages to convert leads, build your email list, and lead potential customers into the sales funnel. Can you tell us a bit more about LeadPages for those who may not know what it is? LeadPages is a platform that allows people to implement the best marketing materials that work, based on the data that we have. We've collected over a billion points of data and with that, we've used that to create things like landing pages, click-up boxes or opt-in forms...tools that allow people not to have to hire a developer. You can simply put up a landing page in 5 minutes or put up a sales page in 5 minutes and be ready to go, and know that it's going to convert How are marketers/entrepreneurs using LeadPages? Of the three most popular uses for LeadPages, one would be as email collection landing pages – using it as a general squeeze page/landing page kind of thing to get email addresses. The second most popular would be webinar registration pages. A lot of people are using it because it converts better than any other webinar registration pages I've ever seen. I've converted a lot of people who were using the general GoToWebinar registration pages, getting these 10% conversion rates. I've said for one webinar, just try LeadPages and see how that works out, and they get 60% to 70% and they're blown away. The third thing would be for sales pages. We have really, really beautiful highly optimized sales pages that people use, and again it's so easy to deploy them that you don't have to stress out about hiring somebody or going through all that hassle. Does LeadPages only work for free webinars or does it work for paid webinars as well? I think there's a place for paid webinars for sure. The beautiful thing, when you're doing something like selling software or information products, you can do a webinar and give 40 minutes or an hour of just insane value, have people fall in love with your brand, fall in love with you, fall in love with your company. Then when you offer something, and help them do what you just taught them to do, it's so much easier to get them to get out their credit card. So use the webinar to sell a paid webinar or series of webinars. Ok, so you've got your LeadPage designed and ready to go, where do you go from there? How do you drive traffic to it? There are a lot of ways to do this and I think we could do about 50 podcast episodes just on different ways to drive traffic. What we've been doing that's really worked for us has been just focusing on lots of high-quality content. So, if you go to Leadpages.net, you'll see we're constantly posting really high-quality blog posts. We have all these different channels that we're creating lots of content for and in doing that, our SEO has gone crazy. If you're in a particular niche, and you create lots of content that's going to help your audience, that's going to work for getting lots of traffic. If you want to get traffic very quickly, something I'm learning a lot about is Facebook ads. It is a sweet science though and you should really learn it well. One way is to send traffic from a Facebook ad to a webinar registration page, but do it within Facebook (such as in a tab on Facebook). So, two big traffic generation strategies would be great content marketing and Facebook ads. What are some of your top tips for building an effective LeadPage? The first thing is, if you are not a conversion specialist or a marketing pro, I would say to start really simple. The big thing that people tend to do is they feel like they need to put all these things on a page to create engagement. So, for a landing page, we think that we need to have a bunch of bullet points that sell whatever it is that you're giving away or selling, but what we have actually found, the highest converting landing page that we've ever created was also the simplest. It gives away a 1-page PDF list of tools. And it has gotten us more opt-ins and more consistent business results and growth than a page that we created to giveaway a video course. At the end of the day something simple like a list of tools is the most valuable thing you can giveaway because it satisfies people's immediate gratification. You talk to a lot of entrepreneurs and experts on your podcast, the Conversion Cast, is there an interview or strategy that really stuck out to you?  Every week! One really strong example is an interview I did with Greg Hickman from Mobile Mix. Greg shared how to use mobile to improve your webinar attendance. Using text message reminders. The average person opens a text within 3 seconds of receiving it. You cannot get that kind of response from anything else. Efficiency tips and tools you love or that are working for you? I'm probably a really poor example of this, but I would say, I am pretty decent at being efficient but I do it in the most convoluted way of all time. Tt really comes down to a combination of my iPhone, Google Calendar, Gmail and ScheduleOnce. That is how I schedule all of my appointments and the podcast interviews, all of my podcast interviews, all that kind of stuff goes through ScheduleOnce. If you don't have an assistant, use that. The most valuable tool that I've ever gotten, in terms of efficiency, is the word "no." As entrepreneurs, we have this tendency to want to help everybody. As you're growing your business, say "no" to a lot of things, which is counterintuitive. Where can folks connect with you? Conversioncastgift.com and the Conversion Cast. This week's Biz Hack: It's all about media kits - whether or not you need one and if so, what to include in it. Media kits are great to have on hand, particularly online where they can easily be downloaded. The goal of the media kit or press kit is to provide the media with enough information that they might need to report about you and your company. Creating an online “Press Room” can really help the media to tell your story. Typically the contents of the media kit will include: About Us - This is an overview of your company similar to your About Page on your website, but more factual. Include background information, when your company was founded, where it is headquartered, why it exists, who it serves, and any notable achievements or awards. It can also include a quote from the company founder about the company's vision, or purpose. Relevant Bios - This includes bios from company leaders or founders, which should consist the person's role within the company, a brief overview of previous career experience, any degrees, certificates or licenses obtained, any awards or recognition received, any memberships or associations that they may be a part of, or leadership roles, such as serving on a board of directors or chairing a committee. You can also include a little bit of personal information as well including, hobbies, city where they live, marital status, children, pets, favorite food, or any other information to add a little human element to the biography. Fact Sheet - Fact sheets are quick overviews of your company by the numbers. It is not necessary for every organization, but would typically contain any pertinent facts about the company in a “quick glance” layout. An overview that could be divided into easy to read columns that might include company name, year founded, key leaders, a list of products or services, any notable or significant projects completed. Sometimes fact sheets include financial facts and stats, number of employees, number of people served, and any other details you wish to include. Latest Press Releases - Include anywhere from 1-3 of the latest press releases. Past Media Coverage - Select the best pieces from your media coverage and include them. FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions page should be included if it's relevant to your organization. Photos - Photos are a very important part of any media kit. Be sure to have high resolution, professional images of any projects, products, leaders and/or founders of the company. Visuals are so important to the media and the more that you can offer, the better. Action Item: This week's action item is to start pulling together the components of your media kit. Even if you don't have an immediate need to reach out to media, it's great to go through this process. It will sort of force you to polish your look - you might notice your bios or About page need refreshing, or you might realize you some professional photography. So work on getting your media kit or press kit together. Quote of the week: “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve." - Napolean Hill Next week we're in The Lab with Mignon Gould, the founder of The Chic Spy. We talk about how she grew the traffic on her website and created a great community around it. Be sure to tune! Until then, have prosperous week!
