Leo "Tata" Sharp was an elderly World War II veteran and award-winning horticulturist who led a quiet life in Michigan—until it was revealed that he was one of the most prolific drug mules for Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel. In his late 80s, Sharp transported hundreds of kilograms of cocaine across the country in his Lincoln Town Car, using his age and unassuming appearance to avoid suspicion. He was recruited around 2009 by cartel associates and quickly proved useful, making regular cross-country drug runs between Arizona and Michigan, sometimes delivering up to 200 kilograms of cocaine at a time. His double life came crashing down in 2011 when he was pulled over in Michigan with over 100 kilograms of cocaine in his vehicle. During the stop, he tried to use his age as a shield, claiming he was lost and confused. Eventually, Sharp pleaded guilty in 2014 and was sentenced to three years in federal prison, a relatively light sentence given the scale of his crimes—largely due to his age, frail health, and status as a decorated veteran. The bizarre case captured national attention and inspired the 2018 Clint Eastwood film The Mule, loosely based on Sharp's story. He died in 2016, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most unlikely figures ever caught up in the cartel drug trade.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

While in school, our guest needed a job with a flexible schedule in order to work around his college classes.  With the help from his family, he purchased his first “black car” a Lincoln Town Car in late 2007. As he quickly learned the potential of the black car business, Ron Gil founded Sedanz and never looked back.  Ron wanted to make sure each chauffeur would treat Sedanz clients the way he would treat them, providing that next level, personal touch, to every ride. And while Sedanz operates out of New York City, their fleet reaches beyond the tri-state area. They have secured trips for their clients in all major cities such as Los Angeles, Boston, London, Paris, Stockholm and beyond. And Ron's with us tonight to tell his story, about  a young entrepreneur who at the time did not know where his black car gig would take him. ======================================================================== Check out our membership program and go VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/gtmotorsports Other cool stuff: https://linkin.bio/grantouringmotorsports GTM = Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - gtmotorsports.org

Idealistic lawyer Mickey Haller runs his practise out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car, taking on cases big and small across Los Angeles. I have to give it to the writers. This was a masterstroke of law genius. It gave everything that needed to be given and was extremely unpredictable no matter how hard you tried. What I loved most about it, was that the creators and writers didn't exactly try to rush it. It was a step by step build up to the main story, a little background and understanding for people with very little knowledge of law cases, this made the viewers to flow seamlessly and ease into the plot episode by episode. No rush, no forced acting, no unnecessary side stories and drama, no forced violence or nudity, just straight up real drama and education. I learnt a great deal of how the judicial system can be, the underrated work of lawyers and even the very difficult work of a Jury. Trying to assimilate a ton of evidence from both sides which always sounds very convincing and deciding which direction to follow is a tough job. Definitely an eye opener. Also, the diversity of the cast, not just racial, but how different people from various works of life can be of impact to our life and work in ways we may not even imagine. I would recommend 10/10★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Don't Need Your Stinkin' License! Yuri Gasparov was 19 years old when he entered the United States from the old Soviet Republic of Georgia. Although still a teenager he was strong of will and body. In the old Soviet Georgia he had made his mark as a thief, extortionist and enforcer. Yuri was 13 years old when he first killed a man who refused to pay half his earnings to the group Gasparov joined when he was 11. When the Soviet Union fell, he emigrated to the U.S. He saw the U.S., unlike the new Georgian Republic, as a place of opportunity for his criminal skills. Gasparov arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on an immigrant's Visa claiming to be a persecuted Russian Jew. He was unusual as an immigrant. There were gold bars weighing ten Kilograms and 30 carats of “D” to “H” color diamonds in his luggage. Yuri stepped off an Al Italia jet from the First Class Cabin wearing an English suit cut by a Saville Row tailor, a Gold Rolex President watch and Italian alligator leather shoes. As he waited in the “Nothing to Declare” line at the Bradley International Terminal women in the line openly stared. They saw a handsome young man with long black hair, green eyes, an aquiline nose and a neatly trimmed Van Dyke beard. They assumed he was an Italian Actor come to try his hand at Hollywood. A limousine was waiting to pick him up at the curb. The chauffeur held the door for him as he entered the long, white, stretched Lincoln Town Car welcoming him to the U.S. in Russian. Yuri Gasparov had convinced the boss in Georgia that it was necessary to use the American system to make profit and leave the violent tried and true methods of making a criminal profit perfected in the old Republic of Georgia. The American system of civil justice was open to the devious, the criminal and the unethical for instant wealth. What he did not know, basking in all the accouterments of immediate success, that knowledge of the law or how to practice law, was irrelevant to his success. All that was required of Casparian was to hang his license on the wall and wait for the profits to roll in. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/barry-zalma/support

Something happened on 5-19-2021 that was very unexpected!   I live in the home of Pam Padgett from our little church group.   Pam discovered water coming from her water heater into the basement and she arranged for a plumber to bring her a new water heater and install it that same day.   Plumber noticed my old car sitting in driveway and he said,  "If I ever wanted to sell it, he was very interested in buying it."  He has a 12 year old son who is CP (cerebral palsy),  and he needed a bigger car.  At this point he doesn't have a car but they use his plumbing trucks to get around and it is harder for his son to get into those vehicles so he wanted a car that sits lower to the ground,   After he changed the water heater, he took the car out for a test drive.  The car runs great so I knew there would be no problem.  It is a 1994 Lincoln Town Car ... huge trunk which can easily carry son's wheelchair.   The car was no burden to us but it had to sit outside all the time and I really wanted the car to have a place in winter, although it managed 2 winters just fine and never had any problem at all starting car.   While he was test driving the car, I had decided that if he made an offer on the car, I was going to give him the car.   I told Pam to bring him in to see me if he made offer.   He told Pam he wanted the car and he said "Why don't you take the water heater and then I'll also give you some cash for the car."   Pam said, "You need to see Joan."   He presented the Water Heater plan to me and I said, "No, I want to give you the car."   He was very shocked!   I said, "We can afford to pay for Water Heater.  You just take the car."   I told him we would pay him for the Water Heater and for him to just take the car for his son.   He just couldn't believe this was happening.  He said no one had ever given him anything before.   He said he would tell his son I had given him the car.   I said, "No ... tell your son God gave him the car.  For I had just asked God what HE wanted me to do about the car."   He said he knew when he got home his son would be outside polishing the car immediately (he can't walk but he has use of hands)   His dad said he thinks the son will be able to drive that car for he has use of his right leg and right hand.  So dad will start teaching him to drive and when he is little older he should be able to get driver's licenses even though he can't walk.   (That's going to be one happy kid!)   Dad said they go up in mountains every week end and he was sure they would take the car up there this week end.   I'm glad for the car!  We had to take car out about every two weeks for a "walk" just to keep up battery and tires.   Last time we went to get food, I noticed the old car which was parked in the driveway and saw  how low to ground it had gotten and I told Pam it was time again to take car for a walk.     Pam said we just got car license registration notice a couple of days ago and she hadn't sent in the fee yet.  (only $70)   The plumber said he noticed in the car a book with my name on it and he asked if he could take that book with the car.  (And I had already told Pam to give him "Building your house on the word of God.")  Of course he can have both books.   I wrote out name of blog and also told him of Podcasts.   He asked, "Do you do the recordings?"   I said, "Yes" and pointed to the microphone which sits by me.   I had just asked God a few days ago if there was anything I should do with the car.  Insurance is only $100 per year as attached to Pam's insurance.  So there was never any pressure to get rid of the car.   It's just that I hated to have car just sitting there unused.   It's fun for me to think of car having a good home and getting to go out for rides and even getting to go into mountains.   I had him take my Texas license plates off the car and leave them for me.  They were expired but we had not changed to Colorado but we had Colorado plates in the car trunk.     It will be fun for me to think of his son with the car.   The dad is only 48 but he looks a lot younger.   He told me he spent 18 years in Navy ... broke his neck ... had to retire from Navy ... got a job at Fort Carson Army base ... was making $100,000 a year but he never got to see his son or daughter because he got home so late so he quit his job and decided to put in his own plumbing business.  He was scared at first but it has worked out well for him.  He said his dad had a plumbing business and he had worked as plumber since he was 8 years old so he decided to give it a try.   I told him if he and children were ever in neighborhood, come in.   (I could see a few things about the moving of God which I will explain in this Podcast.)     * For more extensive information on this podcast, click here:  Jesus Ministries Podcast Blog * For writings on additional subjects, click here:  Jesus Ministries Exhortations Blog

SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY   The Journey to Faith I was born in the Hebei province of China. My hometown was a small village in the south Hebei province. It is adjacent to the Henan province and is located near a river. My family was poor but started to earn more money when my father began to work at the local township auditing department. My mother stayed in the village to grow crops and feed pigs. In spite of the hardships, my family's financial situation was more stable than other families in the village. As a child, I always wondered what our purpose was on earth. I would often think about this in my yard while looking up at the stars. Sometimes I sat on a small hill near my village wondering, “Where will I be in the future?” My older sister enrolled in college in 1981 and was the only one in our county to be accepted into a college that year, which ended up being a huge event. Not only did the local teaching authority pay a lot of attention to this, but it also changed the mind of my grandpa and other family members in regards to the possibility of success. It was not common for a child from a rural village to enter college. Also, people in the village were prejudiced against females. So, my grandpa said that my brother and I must be accepted into college. When it was my turn to go to college, I was accepted into a college in Beijing. However, I faced many hardships. Not only was I pressured financially, but I also had to face inequalities. There are always prejudices against people from rural or poor areas in China. I felt hurt inside and sometimes became very shy and withdrawn. After four years of college, I stayed and worked there for another four years. I wasn't satisfied with that life, and I still felt empty and didn't know what my purpose in life was. Because of this, I decided to study abroad, which is a dream of many Chinese students. I got a joint offer from the London School of Economics in the UK and the University of Southern California. The tuition for the university in London was around 10,300 pounds, but I only had 10,000 pounds. By the third semester, I ran out of money. I did not have enough money to pay rent, tuition, and living expenses. I was also unable to find a job. I asked my family to help, and they gave me 1000 pounds. The university later offered help with my tuition, so that problem was solved. At this point in time, I began to look for a part-time job. One day, I was lingering in a park near McDonald's when I heard people singing hymns. This attracted me to their gathering in the park. They were a group of Christians. They also portrayed through a play how Jesus was crucified. I was so touched and could not help but cry. One sister named Mary came to me and shared with me about God. I asked her if she had ever seen God. How can you say there is a God if you have never seen Him? She said she did not believe it either when she was a student at Oxford. But one day, when she went to a meeting with her father, she was touched when her father was sharing something about the invisible God with other Christians. She thought that was probably God because she did not have it. She sent me a Bible later and asked me to come to her church, but I never had a chance to visit because I had already started to work at McDonald's part-time. I worked the night shift, starting from 8:00PM to 3:00AM or 4:00AM, which was very tiring. Sometimes I tried to get up in the morning to visit her church, but I did not have the strength to wake up. I had already finished my first year of school in London at that time, and I was looking forward to coming to the United States to finish my second-year study, but I did not have the money. I worked out a way to get the school to send me the I-20 form[1] first, and then I got the F-1 student visa as well. But I still did not have the money. I was hoping to get a scholarship from the University of Southern California, but they replied very late and only gave me a tuition waiver for 8 credits. I had to finish 24 credits to graduate. It was a painful struggle to decide if I should come to the US. I had a visa, but I did not have enough money. I really didn't want to go back to China at that time for a few reasons, and I was not satisfied with my one year study in the UK. Most importantly, I felt I was seeking something, but hadn't found it yet. My life was full of anxiety. I cried out in my innermost being, saying, “Whoever gives me peace, I will believe in him.” Finally, I decided to come to the US with a one-way ticket and a couple of hundred dollars. When I was on the airplane, I didn't even have a plan or know what I would do. On the first night in the US, I stayed in a classmate's house. The second night, I had to move out, but I had no place to go. Next, I signed the housing contract with the school and moved into a dorm, but I could not sleep that night. The next morning, I went to the registrar's office, but I couldn't decide if I should register. I knew that if I registered, I would have to pay the fee. If I didn't register, I would just go back to China immediately. I felt torn between the two choices, so I wandered outside of the office from morning until late afternoon. It was a painful experience. Eventually, I decided to go back to China because I realized that I could not survive here. I had already fulfilled my dream by coming to America, so I started to look for some Chinese students who could tell me where to find a travel agency to buy a plane ticket. Before I did this, I cried out to God again from the deepest part of me: “God, I am such a sinner; do you still remember me?” I remember exactly how I said it, and it was in English, not in Chinese. After that, I felt peace in my heart and decided to go back to China. I found a couple of Chinese students and asked them if they knew where to buy plane tickets, but they told me they had no idea. Later, another student walked across the street, but I couldn't tell if he was Chinese or Korean. He looked Korean, so I asked if he was Korean. He was actually Chinese and a brother from the Church in Los Angeles associated with the ministries of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. I asked him about the travel agency, and he asked me why I wanted to go back. I told him the reason, and he told me that I should not go back, and I should finish my studies here. He brought me to the Brother House near campus, and I fellowshipped with a church elder and other members who lived in this home.  The Brother House was a home where several Christian men lived together. The brothers were willing to let me move into their house. The brothers even agreed to let me pay the rent later if I had no money. The brothers taught me how to pray, and we prayed together before we went to see the housing department and my department director. The housing department agreed to cancel my contract, and the department director agreed that all the 8 credits of scholarship were for the first semester. Originally, 4 credits were for the first semester, and 4 credits were for the second semester. As an international student, I was required to register at least 8 credits to become a full-time student. All of my problems seemed to be solved within a couple of days! I even found a part-time job on campus to help cover food and other needs. I still didn't have money for my second semester's tuition, but the brothers taught me to pray unto God. They told me that the Lord would take care of my needs if I dedicated myself to the Lord. I also felt sinful when I first believed in the Lord, so I prayed desperately for Him to take care of my needs and forgive all my sins. It took about six months for me to feel the assurance of forgiveness, and with the help of our department director and fellow believers, I was able to pay the tuition later. However, I continued to struggle with financial problems. Upon graduation, I couldn't afford the monthly meal expenses because I no longer held a job on campus. During this time, I worked at a toy store for a little while. I ended up quitting this job because the boss was constantly cursing at employees. When I was in desperate need, I received a call from a Chinese magazine that had received my application and wanted to interview me. I went there by bus, and at one bus stop, the bus driver told me I was going in the wrong direction. I was actually going in the right direction, but I didn't know. So I started to walk in the opposite direction to take another bus. While I was walking a little bit, a van stopped by me in the street corner and asked me where I was going. A Hispanic man gave me a ride to the company, and I arrived for my appointment at exactly 9:00AM. Later I thanked him and asked him why he helped me. I also called him brother when I thanked him. It turned out he really was a brother in Christ. He said that he was touched when he saw me walking and decided that he would drive me wherever I needed to go. He also told me that he would generally never stop for a stranger since he had three kids in the van in car seats. They were on their way to a daycare center. I ended up getting the reporting job at the Chinese magazine. But when the boss asked me to have an interview in a certain place, I told her that I did not have a car yet. She cried out, “My God!” The other boss later asked me to get a car as soon as possible. Before that, I had to take the bus to work. At that time, a brother who moved out of the brother's house left a 1984 Lincoln Town Car for me to use, but I did not have a driver's license. I failed a couple of times but finally got it by the due date my boss gave me. Later on, I learned the owners of this magazine were also Christians. During that month, I was planning to come to work by bus, but just a couple of days after I started work, all the MTA(Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) bus drivers in Los Angeles went on strike for one month, so I was unable to take the bus. Luckily, one private bus was still running from my company to downtown LA, and a Korean brother dropped me off at the bus stop when he went to work. After I got off work, I took the bus downtown and waited for the brothers to take me home. This sometimes took a couple of hours, and I used this time to recite the verses from the book of John while I was waiting. I was so touched by the brotherly love at that time. This difficult time had led me to receive the Lord and to dedicate myself to Him. In the journey of my belief, there were many miracles. After I started to work, my financial situation got better and better. The Lord's hand was still guiding my life. I got the reporting job in November of 2003. That year, I overheard some believers talking about the first New Jersey Chinese Speaking Perfecting training in August of that year. This is an annual Chinese speaking conference within our denomination. They were talking about how the Lord's Spirit was working powerfully there, and how a brother from The Church in Riverside was completely changed after participating in this training. I was determined to join this training in 2004, and I knew I would experience big changes by attending. I felt this plan was not from me, but it was the Spirit leading me. In that meeting in August 2004 at the Church in Franklin, the Spirit was everywhere. The main topic in that training session was to dedicate your whole being to the Lord and to prepare for His second coming. Everyone was encouraged to dedicate himself or herself to the Lord. I refused to do so even though many brothers urged me to. The second to last time, two brothers urged me again to dedicate myself to the Lord, but I refused again. They looked at me with judgment in their eyes, but I didn't take it personally. However, I felt the judgment from the Lord strongly. I felt like he was reminding me by saying, “How many times did you say that you would dedicate your life to me if I did certain things for you?” It only took me a second to recall all my prayers in which I had asked the Lord to take care of my needs and promised that I would dedicate my life to Him. I had forgotten these prayers a long time ago, but the Lord always remembers. That night, I knelt and prayed to the Lord. “Lord, I still have a hard time believing the truth about your second coming. I would dedicate myself to you if you revealed this to me.” Later, when I fell to sleep, I felt two people were fighting for my heart. The Lord was stronger, and He took it. The next day I dedicated my life to the Lord. While one brother was talking about the New Jerusalem, I felt the heavens open in my spirit. The Lord spoke to me and said, “If the body of Christ, the New Jerusalem, is built up, I will come back.” This proved to me that only those who had dedicated their lives to the Lord could see this vision, just like many brothers had told me. I was completely changed when I came back from the training. I changed a lot of bad habits and started to pursue the truth. I read the Bible and the book Life Study by Witness Lee every day. The local believers were so surprised that I had changed.   Overcoming the Past My father was looked down upon by the villagers and his coworkers due to his character and inability to socialize with others. Many people considered him to be a socially awkward person. At one point, he started to work in a brick factory in a nearby village. He started as a laborer, then he became a keeper of the factory warehouse, and after that, he became an accountant. He worked long hours, and he was not able to be there for me emotionally while I was growing up. After this, my father was able to get a government job with the help of a family member who held a position in local government. But my father was still looked down upon by his coworkers even at his new job. His coworkers would point at me and say things like, “Even though his father was such a nerd, his sons are doing great.”  But these words hurt me greatly. As a result of this, I never learned how to socialize with others, so I was often considered socially awkward as well. It was not as noticeable before high school because we lived in a small town where people did not have as many differences. It became more of an issue later when I went to a big city like Beijing to study. I developed low self-esteem because of my circumstances. Not only did I see my father's failures in his life, but I inherited some of his weaknesses as well. So whenever would I fail at something, I would pity myself. I would think, “How can I amount to anything because I am the son of my father.” This was a lie, but I kept repeating it, and I believed it. This became a shadow in my life for many years. On the one hand, this made me work hard to try to not be like my father, but on the other hand, nothing made me more upset than when my wife said to me, “You are exactly like your dad.” I never wanted to be like him. I told myself I would study hard to acquire the skills to excel in life as I knew I was not strong enough physically to fight with others, and I didn't know how to socialize. I felt like at least I needed to be good at something so people would respect me. I felt this drive to excel in my early life, so I wouldn't end up like my father. My father was not good at his new job or good at socializing with others. I felt if he had been good at either one, he would have been in a much better position. If I reflect back now, I believe my father was probably having some emotional issues. He didn't talk much and only focused on his basic needs, like eating and sleeping a lot. Because of this, he didn't take much responsibility as a husband or father. As a result, my mother shouldered most of the responsibilities at home, even though my father was the main breadwinner as he had a stable job in the local government. People often made fun of him because they thought that he got his job from the help of others and not because of his own ability. I remember one instance in the village when the leaders were giving us a hard time in regard to allocating some land for us to build our house. I saw my mom arguing fiercely with them and accusing them of their wrongdoings. My father would never do this due to his weak character. After a few days, my mom ended up inviting these leaders to eat at our home. She was bribing them or trying to make peace with them. She finally resolved the issue, and we got the land we needed to build our house. My mom was a strong woman, and she also had a lot more friends than my father. She loved me very much, especially since I was her youngest son, and I learned a lot from her. I developed perseverance and flexibility.  Even though I encountered many difficult moments in my life down the road, I never gave up. I became even more resilient, and my will to succeed became even stronger after I experienced failures. My wife also saw this quality in me, and she joked, “You are just a little Xiao Qiang that will never die.”  Xiao Qiang is a nickname for a cockroach in Chinese. People use it in a sarcastic manner to describe someone with a strong and resilient character that you just can't kill, even as you can never seem to eradicate cockroaches completely. During my childhood, I got bullied a lot by my peers due to my weak build and lack of male protection at home. But through this, I developed a strong will because I kept fighting even if I lost. I feel this character trait is the main reason that God is using or calling me to do His will.  The call that God has entrusted me with requires a lot of perseverance and discipline. It may be God who was training me through these circumstances in my early life. In spite of this, I was still timid and afraid to step out because of my fears. In recent years the Lord miraculously delivered me from some of these strongholds. I don't have time to go through all of my experiences with deliverance here, but I will share one example. I did end up forgiving my father and loving him after my conversion to Christianity.  This issue became especially clear to me during an inner healing session, where a minister told me that it was the enemy's plan to put an end to God's calling on my life by attacking my father. I believe he was experiencing difficulty expressing his emotions because of this.   The Leading of the Holy Spirit in My Life I took the college entrance exam three times before finally being accepted into a college in Beijing. When I was selecting a major and a college, I was planning on studying philosophy at a renowned university in Beijing. One day around noon, at the time I usually rest, I had a hard time sleeping. I remembered something others had told me during my high school years. A friend of mine told me I would be a good journalist because he thought I spoke eloquently. So I decided to choose journalism as a major in another college that focused on liberal arts instead. I realized years later that this was the leading of the Holy Spirit, even though at that time, I did not know Him. God had led me on a journey to study media and become familiar with these areas. I used to dream of becoming a TV host and having a successful career in this field. But after coming to the US, I started to spend most of my time learning about spiritual things, and my dream of being successful in media died down gradually. One day in 2016, I received a prophetic word from a woman, and she said God wanted me to return to media. It was God who gave me the desire initially. I also had a prophetic dream where I was taken to a heavenly meeting.  Many who were called to TV evangelism were gathered there. I was led to a large TV studio, and I saw a poster that relayed the reason I was chosen to be part of this ministry. The sign said, “eloquent in speaking,” just like my high school classmate had told me. I also had more than a dozen dreams in which either the Lord or various angels asked me to start making films. I figured the media or films would play an important role in the coming revival in China, which I personally feel I am called to be part of. I also had a dream in which a spiritual being or angel decreed to me in English that I would soon be on national TV. I also had many dreams where my cell phone would grow larger and larger and eventually turn into a big TV. Currently, my ministry work is mainly done by using my phone to record audio for social media sites. Even though all these dreams may be true now, I had no knowledge of my future while I was in college. The liberal arts college had more students from affluent families than regular colleges, so I experienced culture shock when I started. I will share an experience to illustrate this. At the beginning of the first semester, I met some classmates chatting in a restaurant near the main cafeteria. I just went to say hello and later left. They didn't know that I was leaving so they ordered a lot of food. I never thought of joining them because the cost of one meal could cost 1/4 of my monthly expenses for food. They were confused that I did not come back to join them, so they thought I was strange. Situations like this continued to occur and magnified my personal weaknesses, such as lack of social skills and other flaws. I started to develop some hostile relationships with others, which made my life miserable, and I became even more closed. In some situations, I had been taken advantage of, so I figured the reason my life was miserable was that I came from a rural area, and people were prejudiced against me. Another issue was that I was too simple and naive and not sophisticated enough to survive in this environment. During this time, an old Chinese history book called Thick Black Theory from 1911 was very popular. The book presents an idea that the more hardened your heart is, the more successful you will be in Chinese society. The original author may have intended to expose this negative culture, but some people used it for different purposes. Because I wasn't in a good place, I had thoughts of taking advantage of others even though I knew it wasn't like me. This left me with regrets later on and became a turning point for me to repent and receive salvation. During my difficult time in college, I realized something. In my class, many students wanted to stay in Beijing after graduating. But only a few bright students or students who have family connections could find jobs in Beijing because China has a Hu Kou[2] system to limit the number of people staying in Beijing. I knew I had no chance of being one of them. I found out that being a graduate student almost guaranteed that I could stay in Beijing, so I decided to take the graduate entrance exam. I focused all my energy on preparing for this exam, and I was very confident that I would be successful. Amazingly I scored third among all the students who tried to enter the graduation program for my major, and they recruited a dozen every year. However, I failed the subject of politics by a few points. I had a really bad headache during the exam, so I did not score well even though I knew the material. I now believe this was God's intervention, as I never had any issues with headaches. During my college years, I learned from some friends at Beijing University that people can take TOFEL or GRE exams to come to the US to study. I felt naturally drawn to this idea. But I was not sure if I really wanted to leave China. I told myself I would stay in China forever if I could get into Chinese graduate school successfully. If not, I would go to the US to attend graduate school. I was never good at planning or having a balanced approach to life. So after I failed to enter the graduate program, I did not have a job either, and I fell into despair. Only a couple of students from my class were able to get jobs in Beijing, and I did not want to go back to my hometown or go to other places to work. I wanted to stay in Beijing as did many people, and unexpectedly a new opportunity opened up. There was a student from another university in one of the departments in my college that could not work out some legal issues for recruitment after spending many months interning there. Everyone wanted him to stay, but he could not violate the legal bond with his sponsor in his own province. By this time, some of the students had already found jobs, so one teacher recommended me for this position. The department head immediately agreed to recruit me after a brief interview. It was considered a great privilege to be recruited by our own college, and students got full boarding with a citizenship status in Beijing and could become a university or state employee.  So many students wanted to get this position but, they could not. Eventually, this news got out, and it caused turmoil. Other faculty members who were supportive of other students got into fights with this director to try to replace me, and all kinds of rumors were circulated on campus. But the more they pushed, the more firmly this director wanted me to stay. I ended up getting a permanent job in Beijing, and I became a citizen of Beijing. I know there are still people who are mad at me because they didn't get that job. Even though I got the job, it didn't satisfy me, and the thought of going out of the country to study still lingered in my mind. I could not take the graduate exam in China again, as the regulation requires that university employees must get approval from a supervisor to do so. My supervisors were not willing to do so. The only way to apply for graduate school was to apply internationally, and there were no regulations for that. Many students in universities in Beijing were very enthusiastic about studying abroad in the late 1990s. The thought could even be considered contagious, and I was influenced by it through my friends at Beijing University.  After I tried for several years, I finally got an offer from the London School of Economics and the University of Southern California in their joint Media and Globalization program. At this point, my story connects with my testimony at the beginning of this assignment. It was in London that I started to encounter God. I would later meet some Christians who shared their faith with me and touched my life in a profound way. I did not sleep well at that point because I started to feel I was a sinner because of some things I did in college during my darkest moments. I had no peace, so I would often go out to a nearby soccer field to shout out in English what came to my mind. I heard this was a good way to practice English by speaking out loud whatever came to mind. So I went to shout out all my anxieties and pains and regrets to heaven. I thought I was the only one there, but later I believed it was the Holy Spirit that was there to convict me. Only later on did I learn that the glory of God can also be translated as the weight of God. I certainly felt the weight at that time, and I felt like the sky pressed down upon me  to such an extent that I could not breathe. It was an encounter with God, even though I only realized this years later.       Maturing in Faith My life was full of miracles and difficult moments one after another. I cannot share all of them in this short biography, but I will share a few stories that impacted my spiritual life greatly. My spiritual journey continued in 2004. I met my wife at the church I was attending in March 2006, and we got married in November 2006. We were on fire for God, and we planned to evangelize to all of our family. We brought a suitcase of Bibles when we returned to China that winter. When my mother-in-law[3] saw my wife return wearing the clothes that she left China in and with no money, but only a suitcase of Bibles, she was very upset and threw the Bibles down the staircase. With tears in our eyes, we went to my home town. A Christian sister received us, hugged my wife, and they both cried. When we returned to the US, my wife struggled with depression because her communication with her mother was cut off. She did not speak to her mom for almost a year, and we fell into despair again. We experienced many trials in our marriage. Sometimes my wife would say that she never had any arguments with her mother before our marriage. Therefore, if she had not married me, it would not have happened. I argued that I was also a victim, and she should not blame me. This tension kept building, and the Lord used this to break me. In August 2006, I moved from Los Angeles to a new job in New Jersey in order to be closer to my wife, who was a graduate student at the University of Maryland. But after marriage, I quit my job to join her in Maryland at the end of 2007. I lost my H-1B status and became her dependent on F-2 visa[4]. The church I was attending tried to help me obtain a religious visa, but it was denied.  The process of obtaining a religious visa was very strict when it came to qualifications. The church I was attending was not well off financially, and I lacked formal seminary training.  One day we were arguing again, and my wife said to me, “Look, you can't make money, and you can't help by applying for a green card either. Let's not talk about those. Now you even don't care for me.” I was completely broken. I felt utterly helpless. I was volunteering in my church at the time and planned to serve full time in the future. In March 2009, my wife told me I had to find a job before the end of April. I fell into despair again. It was very difficult for me to find a job in the DC metro area. I just prayed to God and said, “I know it seems impossible, but I will put my trust in you.” It was another prayer out of the deepest part of my inner being. However, a miracle happened again. Against all the odds, I got a full-time job on April 20 2019, working for a non-profit organization in the DC area. Even more amazingly, we got our green cards in a very short time through the sponsorship of my company. Later on, my wife and her mother were able to reconcile, and her mom came to stay with us when she visited. She was also baptized during one of these visits. Currently, she lives with us and helps us to take care of our daughter. She is a great help to us. We soon experienced another trial in 2010. We recognized we were having trouble getting pregnant after 4 years of marriage. My wife is a physician, and she started to propose trying in vitro fertilization. In 2010 we did our first round of IVF, and we had high hopes of getting pregnant with twins. However, they did not survive beyond three days. My wife fell to depression again.  Both my mom and I were praying that we can have our child. But I prayed to Jesus and she prayed to her idol.     Who is the Real God? Jesus or Buddha? My great-grandfather and grandfather are devout believers of Lü Zu, who is a figure in the Taoism religion. It is said in a local legend that one day, the Japanese were preparing to attack our village, but because of the heavy fog, the Japanese got lost. Thus, they were not able to enter our village. The villagers thought that it was a theophany of Lü Zu, and they built a special temple for him, but the temple was demolished during the Cultural Revolution. However, after the Cultural Revolution, the temple was restored. The people rebuilt the temple, and the incense was flourishing, showing the power of faith and even the superstition of the faith among the people. I had not seen my great grandfather, but I heard from my family that my great grandfather was a former enthusiast of the Lüzu Temple. When the temple was being rebuilt, my grandfather also donated wood, and I saw it with my own eyes. Ever since childhood, I saw in my grandfather's house that he was worshipping Lü Zu. My hometown also had a lot of Buddhist believers, and my mother had always worshipped Guanyin Bodhisattva. The location of our house was the base of a Bodhisattva temple that was previously demolished. Therefore, villagers said that our family is in the "West Temple."  Before my mother received her faith in Jesus Christ, one of her reasons for not believing in Christ was, "Our family is in the West Temple, how can we not believe this?" Although my mother was not on good terms with my grandfather for most of her life and she didn't worship Lü Zu, she highly respected the sorcerer in the Lüzu Temple in our village. This sorcerer did not have a good education or an affluent family background. Suddenly one day, he just seemed to be possessed by a deity and became a sorcerer. Everyone often asked him questions and treated him similarly to how Christians treat prophets. This sorcerer was a frequent and respected guest at the Lüzu Temple. When I was young, he used to come to my house, and I disliked him very much because I didn't believe in anything at that time. Like my father, who was deeply influenced by communist education, I really hated this feudal superstition. I became a Christian when I came to the United States. I have always evangelized my family, but the effect has been very limited. My mom always said, “We should go our own way. You believe in your Christ, I believe in my Bodhisattva.” I took my parents to Qingdao, China, one year, and my friend, a Christian brother, took us out to eat. He tried to evangelize my parents during the meal, but my father left in anger because of it. My wife and I were married for ten years, but we had experienced 10 years of infertility. In addition to seeking medical help, I also prayed that God would heal us. My mother was also anxious, and she prayed to Bodhisattva, asked the sorcerer, and visited all kinds of idols around my hometown, asking them when we would have children. In 2010 our first IVF failed, which was devastating for my wife and I. During this time, my parents came to the United States for a short visit. After coming in contact with the gospel for a time, my mother intended to accept the gospel to please us. However, when she saw the situation we were in, she did not believe in the Lord, and when she left, she told me instead, "You two believe in Jesus, but you were not blessed. Without a child, you two will quarrel and will not agree. I will not believe in this Lord." After returning, she still worshipped Bodhisattva, and her heart had become more hardened. Because she read a little bit of the Bible in her short time in the United States, I took her to participate in the activities of our church in New Jersey. When she saw people being baptized, I encouraged her to accept the Lord. She seemed to have some hesitation, but on the side, my dad was trying his best to stop her from believing in the Lord. She decided she didn't want to, and in the end, she was not baptized. We seemed to have gone back to square one, but I still believed in our God, and my mother still worshipped her Bodhisattva. I then said to my mom, “You worship your Bodhisattva, I believe in my God. We are all praying for us to have children. Why don't we play a game? Let's see if your Bodhisattva or my God is reliable.” At that time, my faith was not sufficient because God hadn't promised and talked with me about our miracle baby yet. I just relied on a Christian's basic belief in God. Six years had gone by so quickly, and we had tried IVF five or six times, but each time it failed. Finally, the doctor at a big hospital in the United States gave us the diagnosis that we could never give birth naturally, and we fell into despair. I felt like I was forced to leave the evangelical church in 2015 to seek healing for infertility. I went to many different churches in the United States to ask for help, which included charismatic churches, and I sought prayer and healing. I had also participated in countless charismatic healing conferences but never saw any results. In January 2016, I found out by chance that there was a prophetic meeting in a small town in Oregon in the Midwestern United States. I signed up, and I flew from Maryland to attend this special meeting. A speaker named Dutch Sheets was preaching at the meeting, and he was filled with the Holy Spirit. He said, "You are here today to attend the special meeting. Don't think it is accidental. God is leading you. Beginning today, you will clearly hear God's voice that you've never had before.” When I heard this, I was moved and greatly encouraged in my spirit. I strolled and walked into a Target store during the break and said to God, “Please speak to me clearly today.” I inexplicably walked to a place inside the Target store, and I saw a Christian bookstore. I could see the inside through the glass window, and there was a bench outside the door. I happened to see the glass window of the bookstore while I was sitting on the bench. Not long after I sat down, my eyes caught sight of a 2016 calendar with the words “2016 Prepare Your Family”. I heard God say to me: "Prepare your family in 2016. You will have a child this year." I was shocked! I had never heard God clearly like this before. I was ecstatic! I immediately took a photo of this calendar and called my wife to tell her that God had spoken to me and that He told me that we would have a child this year. My wife told me to buy this calendar as a keepsake. After I bought it, I went back to the bench, and just as I sat down, I noticed that there was a picture of a Bible hanging on the wall of the Christian bookstore. It was the same picture I found when I was casually searching on the Internet when I first started the "Jairus Bible World Ministry." I use this picture every time I upload a recording. Then I heard God say to me, "Jairus Bible World Ministry came from me." The church I was attending didn't encourage the members to have their own ministry, so I was not sure at the time if I was doing the right thing. But once again, God spoke to me clearly. Thus, I slowly overcame my fear of people and started my own ministry. To my surprise, I clearly heard God's words, but I didn't know when it would be accomplished. In spite of this, my confidence had increased. I returned to China for the Chinese New Year in February 2016, and I had widely publicized to my family that God would give me a child this year. My sister is a straightforward person, and she said dubiously, “Since younger brother said this in advance if it is true, it seems that the God that he believes is true.” However, my mother was still hard-hearted. At that time, I learned a few healing prayers from the charismatics. When I saw people, I prayed, healing prayers over them. My two cousins also struggled with infertility, so I prayed healing prayers over them, and I prayed to God to let them have children. My mother saw this, and she was very upset. She said, “You are not able to solve your own problem. Don't make a fool of yourself.” My mom still didn't believe in God. I went back to the United States, and a few months passed by, but nothing changed. Instead, Satan's attack on our family was even fiercer, causing my wife and me to quarrel often. I was really in agony, and I prayed for something that may not conform to traditional theology. On May 12, 2016, I said to the Holy Spirit, “Holy Spirit, the charismatic Christians are teaching that we should establish a more intimate relationship with You. I don't know how many times I have prayed to Heavenly Father and Jesus. Can you ask Heavenly Father and Jesus for me when this miracle will be accomplished?” I slept, and I had a strange dream in the evening. In the dream, a woman pointed at a man's back and said to me, “Didn't He tell you that you will have a child next month?” I answered her in the dream, “No, I know in my spirit that this will happen soon, but I didn't know that it will be next month.” God is not a human being. The way God speaks is mostly through the language of the spirit and often through pictures. The Bible often uses a woman to represent the Holy Spirit, such as the woman in Luke 15, who had swept the house and searched carefully for lost silver coins. Generally, Christians think that she represents the Holy Spirit. I think that the woman in my dream was the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and the person whose back I saw was Jesus Christ's. I guess the Holy Spirit was telling me, “Didn't Jesus Christ tell you that you will have a child next month?” I told my wife about my dream, but she didn't believe it. Instead, Satan once again launched a fierce attack on us. Because of a small issue, my wife was very angry with me, and she barely spoke to me for two weeks. This pained me greatly until May 28, 2016, when my wife found herself miraculously pregnant, and she sent a text message to me: "You won the lottery." We had also reconciled. This incident brought a lot of healing to my wife and me. As David said, “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” (NIV, Psalm 30:5). The enemy had violently attacked the plans that God had for us, but in the end, God was victorious through us. Our miracle baby was born without any issues and perfectly healthy in early 2017. When my wife was still in the first trimester, I had not told my mother yet. One day, I was giving out some cash tips in a group of friends and relatives in the WeChat group for a Chinese holiday. My mother was very sensitive and asked if something had happened, so I told her after and she was very happy. Sometime after the baby was born, I was on a video call with my mother, and I asked her about Jesus because I had not mentioned it for a long time since she had previously refused to believe in Him. She said obediently, “I'm willing to believe in Jesus Christ.” I said, “Why?” She replied, “Isn't your fact placed before me?” My mother finally admitted that my God is the true God. This game ended with my victory. In 2018, I went back to China to visit my family. I baptized my father and mother into the name of Jesus Christ.   Convergence During this process of seeking healing for my wife, I was led by the Holy Spirit to come out of my evangelical church and begin to learn more about other denominations, including charismatic churches.  I learned about United Theological Seminary through Global Awakening. During this process, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and started to speak in tongues. I also earnestly pursued the other gifts of the Holy Spirit, including prophecy and healing. During one of the difficult times of our barrenness, my wife sometimes pushed me into a corner by talking about divorce. I knew she did not mean it and that she was trying to see how far she could push me. She wanted to see if I would still love her if we didn't have a baby. Unfortunately, we knew many Chinese families were broken because of this issue. One day when she was pushing me again, I literally heard Satan whisper to me, “just say yes.” I felt I could no longer bear this burden anymore, so I prayed to God, “if you don't strengthen me right now, I will fall, and I can no longer serve you as I will lose my testimony before you.” Immediately I felt a bolt of electricity poured down from my head toward my entire body, and the grace of the Lord once again sustained me. During this difficult time, I was led into the wilderness to go through a series of trials and tests. The Lord sustained me from the beginning to the end. Recently I met a Korean prophet who told me that the Holy Spirit had led me every step of my life. This resonated in my heart. One night I had a dream, and in this dream, I found an enormous bird with wings of various colors spread out all over the sky. In the corner of the sky, there was a baby bird learning to fly. But the baby birds starting falling, and the big bird swooped down to carry the baby bird on its back, and they sored in heaven. This dream occurred a couple of times, and then I heard God speak to me in the dream. “I will train you myself like the big bird is training the baby bird.” I felt this dream could be from God. My life so far felt like a thrilling ride of a roller coaster. Through the trials, miracles, and encounters, I was now convinced I was in the hand of God. I struggled for a long time, but I learned to rest in God even though many times, I didn't see Him or understand what He was doing. But each time, I had greater faith than I did before. God is in control of everything, whether it is regarding our personal lives or world affairs. One of the greatest struggles, in the beginning, was that I thought I was not smart enough to be used by God. I even felt that I was stupid because of so many failures in my life. I heard a story that greatly encouraged me by D. L. Moody.  He was feeling inferior because of his limited education, but one day he heard a word from an English preacher, the world is yet to see how God can use and will use a person who is absolutely consecrated to God to change the world. D. L. Moody was encouraged greatly and consecrated himself to God, and God used him greatly. I also gained a lot of strength from this word and consecrated myself to God. I know it was not my wisdom but the empowerment of the Holy Spirit who was working in me. After I left my denomination in 2015, many brothers and sisters who loved and cared for me during my early Christians years shared their concerns. Some thought I was deceived by evil spirits or taken over by my own ambition or crazy charismatic teachings. About a month ago, I woke up one morning feeling very tired, so I laid down again to sleep a little more. As I fell back asleep, I had a dream that I was with a brother who was a friend of mine in the Brother's House I used to live when I first came to the US. This brother was my roommate for four years, and now he was serving full time in my previous denomination. In this dream, I was explaining to him why I had another meeting in this Brother's House, which was different from our own denomination. I told him it was because the Lord wanted me to connect with other Christians so my heart could be broadened. In the future, I would not only serve my own denomination, but I would also serve Christians in many other denominations. In other words, the Lord was training me to prepare for bigger ministries. Later on, when I was driving to work, this brother texted me and told me he wanted to visit me that day. He had just traveled to a nearby state a couple of days ago. I told him about the dream I had that morning, and he was stunned. He visited our home that night, and we had lunch the next day. He did share his concerns with me and politely reminded me to stay healthy physically and mentally as well since I always had these weird dreams. I had a very difficult time leaving my denomination as the teachings there stressed the unity of our church to a great extent. I was quite concerned that I may have broken the unity of the body of Christ when I left my church. Even though it was difficult, the church and the brothers and sisters there treated me well, and many felt like family to me. This process was very painful, and it felt like a baby being weaned from its mother. At this time, the Lord showed me a vision in my spirit of the Yangtze River in China. He then showed me a tributary in the upper stream and then showed me a tributary in the lower stream. He then told me that I was in oneness with the body of Christ as long as I follow the leading of His Spirit. It was Him who brought me to the upper stream, and now He was leading me to a different stream. The people in the upper stream where I began would join me later, but I would never go back to Tibetan Plateau even though my tributary started there. He encouraged me just to follow the flow, and I was greatly encouraged by these words from the Lord. I took all of the healing and prophetic classes offered by Global Awakening after I connected with this ministry. Through these courses, I started to learn more about the teachings on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and started to develop my spiritual gifts. I was especially interested in the gifts of healing and prophecy. In a meeting held by Global Awakening in 2015, I received another baptism of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit fell on me, I fell back a dozen steps and fell down on the chairs along with two other brothers who had been praying with me. After that experience, I started to have more encounters with the spiritual realm, mainly through prophetic dreams. In these dreams, I encountered Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Angels, sometimes evil spirits, and even diseased people (mostly Chinese people) many times. Beginning in 2015, I started to have prophetic dreams almost every night, and I faithfully wrote them down in my journal. Many of them were about the coming revivals in China and other parts of the world. I also had one encounter with Jesus when I was taken to heaven on the last day of 2017. He showed me from behind a glass window that people were coming up to heaven. He challenged me to deal with some issues in my life, so he could use me greatly. He also appeared to me in a dream where I was taken to a campus in China, and he laid his hand on my head. I fell down backward, and he left after I got up. I was also taken to Japan in a prophetic dream, and I saw Jesus taking something out of the nail hole from his leg to rub on the wounds in my hands. My hands were wounded due to my fishing activities there. He also appeared to me in another dream, and He told me that two rivers would emerge in the area of Maryland where I live, but He did not specifically mention what these two rivers were. But when we went to the ministry of Mahesh Chavda for healing prayers and prophetic ministry in 2015, one person who prayed for us saw two lines crossing over the sky and told me he heard the Lord saying “convergence.” I also saw a vision of tornado in 2013, and I felt it was a promise of God that revival will come like a tornado, and it will spread all over the place.   The Coming China Revival When I reflect on this journey of receiving spiritual education, I can clearly see the leading of the Lord. I was saved in a church associated with Watchman Nee and Witness Lee, and this denomination focuses a lot on the inner life and spiritual discipline. After thirteen years in this denomination, I was led by the Lord to learn from other charismatic churches. Now I have the opportunity to be educated by UTS, and the people I have met here have also opened my eyes to new perspectives. I believe the training at UTS will further my understanding of God, the Bible, and the Church. I also trust that God will open more doors for me through my connection with UTS and Global Awakening. Like I told one of my peers during the intensive training at Dayton, I hope to be a bridge between the Chinese church and the churches in the West and the rest of the world. Together we can usher in the promised revivals in China and all over the world. I will conclude this biography with another conversation I had with the Holy Spirit. Before I went to a prophetic conference in 2015, I was reading Chuck Pierce's book, who was one of the speakers at the conference. In this book, he said Jesus visited him in the 1980s and told him China would be huge one day, and there will be a great revival in China, and this revival would spread all over the world. One day after I came back from the trip, I was pondering this when suddenly I heard the Holy Spirit ask me, “what is a great revival?” I immediately answered Him in my spirit, “I heard that one out of ten people in China is a Christian now, isn't that a great revival already?” Then the Holy Spirit replied back, “how about two out of ten?” I calculated quickly in my spirit and realized that it would be another 100 million Chinese people. I was quite shocked. Then I heard a prophecy from Bob Jones that one billion souls would be harvested in the coming revival. It is hard to imagine that at least 100 million Chinese wouldn't be included in this number. I felt my calling was to be a part of this great revival in China. My main gift is teaching, and I learned from a very young age that I was skilled in public speaking even though I was shy in interpersonal communication. I further developed this gift because I had a desire to become a TV host. I also received a teaching anointing while I was with the church associated with Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. They encouraged everyone to teach the Bible, and I have been leading Bible studies for over 10 years, and it has helped improve the gift of teaching. It was confirmed by many prophetic words that the Lord gave me this skill to break down difficult subjects to allow other people to understand easily. I feel I am called to teach the Word of God to help God's people understand the deeper meaning behind the Bible. However, before I do that, I need to be well trained myself. I have limited knowledge of theology, and I have learned a lot in my pre-doctoral program at UTS. I am hoping to learn more during my studies in this doctoral program. There is so much richness in the body of Christ, and I hope to learn as much as I can from others.   Written by Sean Song Edited by Danielle Pagnanella   [1] The Form I-20 is also known as the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status-For Academic and Language Students. Bible Study with Jairus - My Testimony This post was originally written in 2004 in Chinese for a Chinese Gospel Magazine and was translated into English in 2010 and revised in 2018. After rereading the post I realize it was poorly written but I feel it still reflects my spiritual condition in 2004. In the future I plan to write another testimony telling the story of my salvation from a different perspective that reflects my spiritual growth throughout the years. The hopeless condition of man is the beginning of knowing God I was born in the Hebei province of China. My hometown is a small village in the south of Hebei province. It is adjacent to Henan province and is situated near a river. My family was poor but started to earn more money when my father began to work at the local township auditing department. My mom stayed in the village to grow crops and feed pigs. In spite of the hardships my family's financial situation was more stable than other families in the village. As a child, I always wondered why we live on earth. I would always think about this in my yard while looking at the stars. Sometimes I sat on a small hill near my village wondering, “Where will I be in the future?” My older sister was enrolled in college in 1981 and was the only one to be accepted to college in our whole county that year. This was turned into a huge event. Not only did the local teaching authority pay a lot of attention to this, it also changed the mind of my grandpa and other family members. It is not common to have a child from a rural village enter into college. Also, people in the village were prejudiced against females. So, my grandpa said that my brother and I must be accepted into a college. When it was my turn to go to college I was accepted into a college in Beijing. However, I faced many hardships. Not only was I pressured financially, but I also had to face inequalities. There are always prejudices against people from rural or poor areas in China. I felt hurt inside and sometimes became very passive. After four years of college, I stayed worked there for another 4 years. I wasn't satisfied with that life and I still felt empty and didn't know what my purpose in life was. Because of this, I decided to study abroad, which is the dream of many Chinese students. I got a joint offer from the London School of Economics at UK and the University of Southern California. At this point in time, I began to look for a full-time job. But one day, when she went to a meeting with her father, she was touched when her father was sharing something about the invisible Christ with other Christians. She thought that was probably God because she did not have it. She sent me a Bible later and asked me to come to her Church, but I never had a chance to visit because I had already started to work at McDonald's part-time. I worked the night shift, starting from 8 pm to 3 or 4 am. It was very tiring. Sometimes I tried to get up in the morning to visit her church, but I did not have the strength to wake up. I had already finished my first year of school in London at that time and I was looking forward to coming to the US to finish my second-year study but I did not have the money. I worked out a way to get the school to send me the I-20 first, and then I got the F-1 visa as well. But I still did not have the money. I was hoping to get a scholarship from USC, but they replied very late and only gave me a tuition waiver for 8 credits. I had to finish 24 credits to graduate. It was a painful struggle to decide if I should come to the US. I had the visa but I did not have enough money. I really didn't want to go back to China at that time for a few reasons and I was not satisfied with my one year study in the UK. Most importantly, I felt I was seeking something, but hadn't found it yet. My life was full of anxiety. I cried out in my innermost being, saying, “Whoever gives me peace, I will believe in him.” Finally, I decided to come to the US with a one-way ticket and a couple hundred dollars. When I was on the airplane, I didn't even have a plan or know what I would do. The first night in the US, I stayed in a classmate's house. The second night, I had to move out, but I had no place to go. I signed the housing contracts with the school and moved into the dorm, but I could not sleep all night. The next morning, I went to the registrar's office but I couldn't decide if I should register. I knew that if I registered, I would have to pay the fee. If I didn't register, I would just go back to China immediately. I just couldn't decide. I wandered outside of the office from morning until late afternoon. It was a painful experience. Eventually, I decided to go back to China because I realized that I could not survive here. I had already fulfilled my dream by coming to America. I started to look for some Chinese students to ask where I could find a travel agency to buy a plane ticket. Just before I did this, I cried out again in my deepest part to God: “God, I am such a sinner, do you still remember me?” I remember exactly how I said it, and it was in English, not in Chinese. After I did that, I felt peaceful in my heart and decided to go back to China. I found a couple of Chinese students and asked them if they knew where to buy plane tickets, but they told me they had no idea. Later, another student came across the street; I was having a hard time telling if he was Chinese or Korean. He looked Korean, so I asked if he was Korean. He was actually Chinese and a brother from the Church in Los Angeles. I asked him about the same thing, and he asked me why I wanted to go back. I told him the reason. He told me that I should not go back and I should finish my study here. He brought me to the brother's house near campus and fellowshipped with the Church elder and brothers who lived in the brother's house. The brothers were willing to let me move in the brother's house. The brothers even agreed to let me pay the rent later if I had no money. The brother taught me how to pray, and we prayed together before we went to see the housing department and my department director. The housing department agreed to cancel my contract and the department director agreed that all the 8 credits of scholarship were for the first semester. Originally, 4 credits were for the first semester, and 4 credits were for the second semester. As an international student, I was required to register at least 8 credits to become a full-time student. All of my problems seemed to be solved in a couple of days! After half a year, I started to feel the assurance of forgiveness. And with the help of our department director and fellow believers, I was able to pay the tuition later. However, I continued to struggle with financial problems. Upon graduation, I couldn't afford the monthly meal expenses because I didn't have the job on campus anymore. So I worked at a toy store for a short period of time. I quit my job later because the boss was constantly cursing at employees. When I was in desperate need, I received a call from a Chinese magazine that had received my application and wanted to interview me. I went there by bus, and in the final bus stop, the bus driver told me I was going in the wrong direction. I was actually going in the right direction, but I didn't know. So I started to walk in the opposite direction to take another bus. While I was walking a little bit, a van stopped by me in the street corner and asked me where I was going. A Hispanic man gave me a ride to the company and I arrived for my appointment at exactly 9 am. Later I thanked him and asked him why he helped me. I also called him brother when I thanked him. It turned out he really was a brother. He said that he was touched when he saw me walking and decided that he would drive me wherever I needed to go. He also told me that he would generally never stop for a stranger since he had three kids in the van in car seats. They were on their way to a daycare center. I ended up getting the reporter job at the Chinese magazine. But when the boss asked me to have an interview in a certain place, I told her that I did not have a car yet. She cried out “My God!” The other boss later asked me to get a car as soon as possible. Before that, I could take the bus to work. At that time, a brother who moved out of the brother's house left an ‘84 Lincoln Town Car for me to use, but I did not have a driver's license. I failed a couple of times but finally got it by the due date my boss gave me. During that month, something else happened. I was planning to come to work by bus but just a couple of days after I started to work, all the MTA bus drivers at LA went on strike for one month so I was unable to take the bus. Luckily, one private bus was still running from my company to downtown LA and a Korean brother dropped me at the bus stop when he went to work. After I got off from work, I took the bus downtown and waited for the brothers to take me home. This sometimes took a couple of hours and I used this time to recite the verses from the book of John while I was waiting. I was so touched by the brotherly love at that time. This difficult time had led me to receive the Lord and to dedicate myself to Him. In the journey of my belief, there were many miracles. After I started to work, my financial situation got better and better. The Lord's hand was still guiding my life. I got the job in Nov. of 2003. In that year, I overheard some believers talking about the first New Jersey Chinese Speaking Perfecting training in August of that year. This is an annual Chinese speaking conference within our denomination. They were talking about how the Lord's spirit was working powerfully there, and how a brother from The Church in Riverside was completely changed after participating in this training. I was determined to join this training in 2004, and I knew I would experience big changes in this meeting. This was not from me, it was the Spirit leading me. In that meeting in August 2004 at the Church in Franklin, the Spirit was everywhere. The main topic in that training was to dedicate your whole being to the Lord and to prepare for His second coming. Everyone was encouraged to dedicate himself or herself to the Lord. I refused to do so even though many brothers urged me to do so. The second to last time, two brothers urged me again to dedicate myself to the Lord. I refused again. They looked at me with judgment in their eyes, but I didn't take it personally. I felt the judgment from the Lord strongly. He seemed to remind me: How many times did you say that you would dedicate your life to me if I did certain things for you?” I recalled in a second all my prayers in which I asked the Lord to take care of my needs and that I would dedicate my life to Him. I had already forgotten them a long time ago, but the Lord always remembers. That night, I knelt and prayed to the Lord. “Lord, I still have a hard time believing the truth about your second coming. I would dedicate myself to you if you reveal this to me.” Later when I fell to sleep I felt two people were fighting for my heart. The Lord was stronger, and He took it. The next day I dedicated my life to the Lord. And while one brother was talking about the New Jerusalem, I felt the heavens open in my spirit. The Lord spoke to me: If the body of Christ, the New Jerusalem, is built up, I will come back. This proved that only those who dedicated their lives to the Lord can see the vision. Just like many brothers have told me. I was completely changed when I came back from the training. I got rid of a lot of bad habits and started to pursue the truth. I read the book Life Study by Witness Lee every day. The believers in my locality were so surprised that I had changed.

1:38 story about the important clients that went to Vegas for a Bentley VIP event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway... Continentals or Flying Spurs...while in The Club Room at Dell Frescoes Double Eagle Steakhouse to host a welcome dinner for all of our clients. It was a beautiful room...while the drivers were putting away the cars from today's event, they wrecked all four cars! 5:34 they had a Yokohama truck...could only get through 2 hot laps, before new tires. 5:56 with Derek Bell...going around this road course in a 5500 pound sports car, squealing and humming and he's talking to you, like he's having afternoon tea, "...watch as I go into this corner, we're gonna hit the apex..." It's nothing to him... I'm white knuckled with my hand on the roof. .10:44 Bentley offered to reimburse flight and lodging due to wrecked cars...I don't think they realized how some of these folks traveled.... a trip for a family was north of $70,000. 16:51 when I was a kid, I was an AJ Foyt fan. You know, I watched a little bit of NASCAR. For me, it was the open wheel racers, and AJ Floyd was the guy. I almost got to meet him. I was in line to get him to sign my poster. I was at Pebble Beach at the time... I remember I had to get to SFO to to get out of town. I didn't get my autograph. 17:50 I did a an event one time at Daytona International Speedway, was on their Rolex 24 course 20:41 very first car personally owned... Opel GT. 20:44 I'll share a story with you about a guy that I know. He's a bi-coastal gentlemen got divorced and bought a piece of land, because he wanted to, you know, kind of like, get off the grid a little bit. And he built a I want to think it's like 25 30,000 square foot building. beautifully. Well done. Wood, stone gorgeous. It's got a 20 by 20. Room in it. That's bedroom, kitchen, living room, closet and storage. And the rest of it is garage buyer for cars. He's probably got $40 million of cars.... 23:24 I was a car washer at a lot. We had a line that was called the big line. A line of Fleetwood Broughms that are like 40 feet long. 25:40 "...he looked like the Grinch Who Stole Christmas... his arms hanging out the window...there's no paint on the driver's door where his arms hanging out. Overalls, no shirt..." 27:13 ...the same pickup truck shows up the same father and son with no shirt, wearing overalls walk in. The conversation then turns to how you're going to pay. He says Jr. Go out and get the money". So he goes out into the car gets a grocery bag, and he comes in and it's full of money. And we're now we spend the afternoon counting dollar bills and $5 bills and $10 bills and $20 bills until we come up to his total... 30:39 Jeff: My dad lived in a penthouse in a high rise outside of Detroit. And he was a car dealer. In the underground parking garage, he had three spots...always had some Corvettes, always had a new Lincoln Mark lll and lV. And the '48 Bentley... the apartment number was on the parking spot...he'd just get a knock on his door... it would be a girl wanting to know who lived there and whose cars those were. That was his Tinder at a time. 31:35 Jeff: he let me drive alone at 9 years old, in a 1969 454 automatic Corvette, and all I did was pull myself up by the steering wheel... I never touched the gas, I would just ride the brake. 32:39 he turned 14 I let him start driving to school alone. Jackson Don't tell anyone. 33:02 Chris sold new Lamborghini Maserati... Lamborghini Countach... 140 miles an hour, and I'm just freaking out 38:03 (Maserati Biturbo) He's lays on the gas in the rain, rear wheel drive twin turbo car, the car breaks loose. He breaks into multiple 360s and spins right into the mouth of this carwash. 41:28 This dealership was top customers satisfaction for all Ford and Lincoln mercury stores, which was I think, more than 5000 stores for something like 15 years in a row and had the highest loyalty factor... I just want to let the world know that Chris worked in this. 44:46 Don Naja. He 90ish. He still sells around 20 cars a month. 50:12 Let me defend the car business to the civilian public. The reason we don't like to give a quote, at a time that you're not going to buy, is we don't know where we're going to be in quota, in cash flow in inventory level, in how old or how aged in stock, the one that you're looking at is, the day you're ready, if the salesperson you're dealing with is one unit away from hitting some bonus that we want to help his family pay bills, there's all these things that we look at. 50:42 why dealers can be afraid to throw a number out: if it's too high, and "safe", meaning safety margin, you probably won't come back, but it's safe and doable in the unlikely event that you would return. Yet if it's too low, meaning we could do it now because (eg.) we're one unit away from a factory bonus, and we're gonna do it. But we don't know if we'll be in that position in three day and then we can't do it anymore. Then you think we made up a number and we were lying. So we don't know which number to hit you. Easily honored and too high for you to return or to the bone at the moment and most likely not possible later! 51:35 if your excuse to leave is that your wife's in the hospital, what are you stopping test driving and asking for an appraisal on your appraisal and your trading and whatever? MY WIFE HAS CANCER! I don't understand you people! (What would that do to my payment?!?) 56:08 I'm holding a cup of coffee and I come through the other side and I spill hit them right here. A cup of coffee on Jay Leno. 1:01:57 (Pilot Frank) And I opened up the door and here's this man on top of the covers in his tighty whities face down snow snoring 1:03:40 it's a Challenger jet. Invited us to Bahamas to gamble one night and invited my father. We're at Atlantis playing blackjack. The casino accommodated us and gave us a $10 to $10,000 limit special table so we can all sit together. I remember being at that card table and saying to him, you know, I got to be at work in the morning. It's like 11 o'clock at night. And you know, here you are in Bahamas, you got to be working in the morning like eight o'clock, right? And it's 11 is it Okay, then let's go. And he calls the pilot. So the pilot knew we were coming. We took a taxi or a hotel limo or something to the plane from saying I need to leave at 11 to being in my bed. IN CLEARWATER, FLORIDA from the Bahamas, was about an hour and 15 minute I said I am playing cards at 11. At 12:15 I'm in bed. 1:12:39 The Ferrari 599 bumper: A Honda Accord, pulls in. The building's under construction. We had this 599 that was backed into a parking spot across from the garage Bay. This little Honda comes in and is, you know, doing a U turn. But he doesn't have enough room to make the turn. So he throws the car in reverse. And he actually backs into this brand new 599 which nobody's seen yet. 1:18:05 "Let's go take a ride" and they drive me into this warehouse and we're in the back of like a Lincoln Town Car. I'm in the back and we're driving further and further into this dark warehouse and I'm actually thinking "they're gonna' get rid of me! I was selling too many Ferrari's into their territory!!" 1:19:21 founder of Wikipedia: he's got a Ferrari that he wants us to service that he says hasn't run in a long time. Can you come get it? Next to his house, is this Ferrari not parked in a garage, that someone's been mowing the grass around it for, I don't know 10 years and there's a tree growing underneath the car through the motor cover that is now creating shade. 1:24:16 lo and behold, you turn left at Fort Myers on I don't even know what the road number is the route number. Going over to Lake Okeechobee. And on the side of the road, with the key in it is this Spyker. He had jumped something with the car and the suspension was like pushed up into the nose of the car. 1:34:21 Chris explains how leasing works and why the wealthy who are very capable of paying cash, choose it. 1:42:37 so you're in a normal parking lot in Miami at a Dunkin Donuts and a brown Pagani pulls in next to me. I'm on my phone doing something else and I'm like, but it's nonsensical. 1:44:44 you drop the hammer on this motor. Well, this seat rips from the floor. And I almost fly out the complete back of the boat and crack my head on the transom of the boat. You didn't even blink an eye. "Don't sue me. I have no insurance!" 1:45:26 we're trudging through Charlotte Harbor, which is a very large body of water. And in this in your 19 foot boat. Next thing, you know, one of these Popeye's offshore racers goes flying across our bow. And then we look to our port side or starboard side, and there's a bunch of them coming in.

Partially buried skeletal remains were uncovered while on an organized search for a missing boy back in December of 2018.  Evangeline Jane Doe was found in a rural, grassy area in Ville Platte, Louisiana. The identity of this woman remains unknown. Forensic experts at LSU FACES were able to determine a few key points of her identity. However, no sketch for Evangeline Jane Doe has been made available thus far. Authorities have very little to go off, and the case has since gone cold.  Further testing is available through public funding at the 501(c)3 non-profit, DNA Doe Project. After a night of bingo, grandmother and mother Carolyn Riggins disappeared.  70-year-old Carolyn Riggins was last seen on July 11th, 2020 at the Watauga Road Bingo in the Fort Worth, Texas area.  Carolyn had reportedly been on a winning streak that week and had scored a few winning pots the night she went missing.  Authorities were able to establish a partial timeline. Her 2002 tan Lincoln Town Car was caught on camera on I35 driving north of her home and was time stamped for 5:30 AM on July 12th.  Her family have created a Facebook page called “Finding Carolyn” for anyone that might have further information. www.mysteriesofthebayou.com   Scarlett (00:03): Yeah. Roy (00:03): Hey, hello, and welcome to the mysteries of the by you podcast, where you are a true pod, true crime podcast. We're going to be focusing on, uh, cases that come out of Southwest Louisiana, Louisiana as a whole. And of course beyond we don't, we're not going to be totally locked into the area, but my name is Roy and this is Scarlet. Hello, Scarlet. How's it going? Pretty good. How about you? I'm good. Good. You know, I'm based in the Dallas Fort worth area. The reason for my passion for this is not only for the true crime part, but for the area is spent a lot of time down there and it's kinda my adopted hometown area. Uh, I love the people, the food, the culture. Um, there's nothing about it that I don't like. So I like to spend as much time down there as I can. And Scarlet is based in the, uh, you're out of the Lafayette area, correct? Scarlett (00:59): Correct. Yeah. I, um, uh, I, I grew up here and I'm back here and I second everything you just said, except for, I don't like the hurricanes, the mosquitoes and the audio, but you guys have a little bit of that yourselves too, so we're all kind of in the same boat. Roy (01:14): Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've had the, an extra dose of the hurricanes this year. It seems like I know that you've, uh, you've had two of them that you've dodged in the last month or so. Scarlett (01:23): Yeah. And guess what? We have some, I think there's a tropical storm, uh, midweek this week and we're almost in November, so Roy (01:31): Gosh. Yeah. They said it's been a while. I know we made it through our alphabet and then they started working on this, the Greek alphabet or some other kind of alphabet, but anyway. Scarlett (01:43): Yeah. Roy (01:43): Right, right. So I'm going to tell, you know, we'll both kind of tell our story on this episode. We want to, um, you know, why we got into this, why it's important for us. Uh, first a couple of things. Number one, you can find us on iTunes, Stitcher, Google play, and Spotify. We have a website www dot mysteries of the, by you. We're on a Facebook Facebook page and a Facebook group. Eventually we hope to, you know, have enough followers and enough interest that we want to get into some group discussions. We also want you to reach out to us if you have a case submission ideas or especially if you have any information on something that we're talking about, um, you can, all, you can reach out to info at mysteries of the, by you or Roy or Scarlet, either1@mysteriesofthebayou.com. We'll be glad to answer you. Roy (02:40): Or, um, you know, on Facebook you can send us some meshes, whatever, whatever works best. But I got into this true crime. Um, w when I was a kid, there were three girls that went missing from a mall here in the Fort worth, in, in Fort worth and no trace of them ever. So there were some renewed interest. Um, probably, uh, two, three, four years ago, local guy did a podcast. And I thought it was really interesting because, you know, this is something that's been around with not much activity on it for the last 40 years. So there was another girl who unfortunately, a little bit older than me that was murdered in, uh, the same timeframe about 1974. And, uh, he also covered her case, brought a lot of renewed interest. And then lo and behold, about a month ago, um, the police actually, uh, saw, well, they think they solved the case. Roy (03:40): They arrested a guy, processed him. It was a new form of DNA that they were able to extract some, uh, uh, use a smaller amount of DNA and get more out of it. So it was unbelievable, but, uh, I think what, what I didn't understand at the time is that how it, especially in 2020, but how could people just fall off the face of the earth and never find a trace of them, never hear from them. It's unbelievable. And in some instances, um, it's people, the people and their vehicle both just disappear, never to be seen again. So really piqued my interest. And then the next thing, I started listening to a lot of different podcasts and it's like, Oh my gosh, this is so widespread across the U S it's it's rampant. I mean, people just go missing every day, never to be heard. Roy (04:34): So anyway, just peak my interest, not only from that investigative side, that, how does this happen, but also, you know, of thinking about how, how, how do families live with that? And so, you know, we want to be very, uh, family and victim focused. We aren't gonna victim shame, or we don't care about what their lifestyle was. It, uh, matters that they were a person and that there have either been killed or that they are missing. So we want to help as much as we can bring more information, there's never closure. So it's not like we're going to find closure for the family. Cause I don't think that happens, but, uh, you know, at least having the information to solve the mystery about what happened. And so that's kind of how I got into it and why I'm interested. Uh, Scarlet, what about yourself? What, what peaked your interest in true crime? Scarlett (05:30): Oh, well, that's a really great question. Um, you know, I know a lot of people that are involved in true crime, they have some kind of tacit, uh, connectional almost in a way that you do where you knew of someone or it happened in your hometown. And it, it kind of in a way, whether you were cognizant of, but not, it kind of shaped your life going forward, especially like you said, for these families that just don't have the closure. Um, but you know, it's, it's interesting. I read somewhere that, you know, um, there's a lot of interest in true crime cause it, it almost makes us feel a little bit safe in our own lives. It kind of gives us some control, you know, knowing what else, you know, these horrible things happen. Um, and it's out there and it gives us some kind of understanding, but again, like, you know, kind of second what you said, uh, I just so much sympathy for these families and, you know, especially doing something like this and you sit at your computer and you start to Google things, uh, you just see the, the frequency with which this happens and, you know, in your own town even. Scarlett (06:28): Um, so it just kind of broadens that, understanding that this really does happen to people. And then, you know, they have to figure out how logistically, you know, w what life is like and how to, you know, the aftermath and just the day-to-day and how challenging that could be. Roy (06:42): Yeah. And I like these, uh, the three girls that went missing, you know, their families have pushed this with the police. You know, the police can only go so far. There's, um, you know, they're clues and they run them down. But after a while, it's like, you know, where do we go from here? So the families have been really involved with keeping these investigations moving and then family and friends, and, um, you know, in the three girls that went missing, they actually, uh, last year, 2018, maybe they actually pulled some cars up from the bottom of a Lake thinking that they may have some something to do with it. Yeah. So it was a big undertaking, but one of the, uh, girls brothers, uh, you know, he's instrumental in keeping the Facebook page alive and keeping the stuff out there. So, you know, that's great. Roy (07:31): I hope that we can bring, uh, you know, a little bit of help to a family, you know, we're, we're starting out. So I'm gonna, you know, ask or beg mercy from the, you know, people that may see the show we're trying taping, um, on, uh, on zoom. So we can put it up on YouTube for you. But, um, we're gonna start with some fairly, uh, small cases that don't have a lot of information we're doing that just so we can find our footing on how we're going to be able to communicate and talk back and forth about these and make it interesting. We will try to keep these, um, you know, we'd like to do about a 30 to 45 minute episode, those tend to work best. And, uh, you know, just present the facts. We're not going to add a lot of color. Roy (08:19): Uh, w you know, we just want to present what we know as the facts. We don't want to speculate on what may or may not have happened. I don't think that's fair to families, especially of the missing, to speculate on all the bad things that could have happened to the individual, because, um, you know, I view it as my family, that somebody was missing. Uh, you know, we're going to hold out hope, even though at some point you have to give in to the realization, they may not come back alive, but you always want to hold out the hope until, you know, for sure. So, you know, we don't want to speculate on all the bad things that may have happened. We just want present the facts and say, Hey, if you've seen these people, or if you saw something, you know, reach out to law enforcement, get them involved. And, um, even if you think it's something tiny or, um, have no, you know, of no value, let them make that determination because they may be able to put it together with another clue, uh, you know, one in one equal two, and it may, it may, uh, you know, it could be the thing that turns an investigation. You just never know. Scarlett (09:26): Yeah. And I'm so glad that we're doing this, uh, you know, via video, because I'm hoping that, you know, we go to Walmart or something, eventually enough people, you know, we'll see our faces and maybe they'll, uh, when that'd be great, if they just, you know, you're in the shopping line at Walmart and says, Hey, I watched your book. I listened to your podcast. And I got, you know, got this, you know, case or this information or this family member, how cool would that be? Right. Roy (09:49): Right. Yeah. That's the best, the best thing that could happen is we find out that somebody listened to the show and what it was able to, you know, help solve something. Uh, you just never know, uh, part of it is the, it's a game of numbers. It's the more people that put the message out to the bigger audience, the, that it gets to the better chance of, uh, you know, having a break in a case that that's the great thing about this day in time is, you know, used to, you saw you had a local newspaper and, um, the story ran there. And if you didn't read that, or if you weren't in that area, you may not really know. But today, um, you know, this show has been, uh, you know, we've been trying to get the show off the ground for about a year and just been some setbacks here and there. Roy (10:37): But even over that time, we've had visitors to our website, into the podcast from all over the world. So it's such, it's such an awesome thing to have that kind of a reach. So, you know, we're excited and, uh, what we're going to do. I think at least the first couple episodes, like I said, we've got a, we're going to go over two cases, each one, uh, they're sparse details. So we're not going to be long and in-depth into each one, but this way, uh, you know, it just, uh, gives a chance to, to families, to maybe, uh, to get some answers. So unless you have anything else, you just want to jump right in. Scarlett (11:18): I miss, I wish I had a better icebreaker. I, um, you know, just encouraging me. I, I, I do have a, not to sensationalize it in any way. Um, but you know, you mentioned the seventies, you know, a case, you know, that this kind of inspired your true crime. Um, my mom had a Ted Bundy's story around mid seventies. Yeah. And it shouldn't, we shouldn't lead with that. The, and the hook or something really short stories. She went to school in, uh, Pocatello, Idaho. And, uh, he happened, he had the cast and he was at this kind of a local watering hole bar. It was just college kids. It's a real small town. Everybody knew each other. And he said, hi, I'm Ted. And he was kind of strange. And he had a cast and everybody remembered him because it was just, he struck out he wasn't a part of the college crowd. So how crazy is that? Six degrees everyone's I think he started talking to enough people. They might have one of these crazy stories. It's like six degrees of Ted or something in that time period. Roy (12:14): Yeah. Yeah. That's for sure about the six degrees. Uh, you know, that's one thing I always, uh, talking to new people, you always try to find that connection and it, it's always amazing that, uh, there's always something, maybe an event or a person, but usually you can find some kind of common ground there. All right. Well, let's jump into this one. Um, this is one that's been kind of bugging me for probably the better part of a year. Now. It is the, um, it comes out of evangelism parish in Louisiana, and it it's basically called the, uh, evangelism parish, Jane DOE. And what happened was in 2018, December, 2018, there were some remains found of a young lady and they still haven't been identified. And kind of the backstory we'll get into is that, um, the way that this, uh, the skeletal remains were found, what are that? Um, there was a missing child in the area. And, um, so the police over in Ville Platte, or called out to search for this child, and as they're searching, they, um, come across these bones and you, you know, a little bit more about the, uh, the, um, the child they were searching for. You have a little information on that, don't you? Scarlett (13:38): Yeah. Um, you know, it's always horrible when a child goes missing. So naturally, uh, this was an all man on board. You know, they had four wheelers, they had people on horses. They even the Cajun Navy, uh, even came out to lend a hand in the search and rescue, but the child was found, uh, it was, it looked like a runaway case. And so child was found safe. So that that's good. And unfortunately, this, they happened to stumble upon these remains of this, you know, person, unfortunately. Roy (14:10): Yeah. And while you brought them up, it's probably good that we'll just stop for a minute and, uh, say, well, why would the Navy be involved in a search that was that far in, but, uh, if you've never been to, yeah, yeah. Now they're, they're great. They help out a lot. And even through these last hurricanes, they were a big help evacuating and looking for people. But in this particular area, there are a bunch of rice fields that are flooded rice fields, crawfish farms. So anyway, there is a lot of water around as well. So if I'm also, so they found these remains, they were partially buried. They were in a green space by a barn. It it's from I've read. It said it was kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but it was basically, there were some, uh, another house close to it. And they said that the neighbor that lived there at the time was known to have interaction with high risk women. And, you know, I think that's important because Speaker 3 (15:12): Especially Roy (15:13): In a small area, like evangelism parish, it was all over the news. So I feel very strongly that had this young lady been missing from that area. It would have been solved immediately, but it just makes you believe that maybe she was from a different area and whether she was in this area voluntarily, or whether she had been trafficked to the area. We don't know. But again, the impetus for us wanting to do this show is because if this young lady came from outside of the evangelism parish, or, you know, even the South, what that region of Southwest Louisiana, this is where we're hoping if you have someone that, you know, of friend or family that's missing, that kind of fits into this age group or a range that, you know, you may, um, be a good thing to check with the authorities, just to see if it happens to be that Speaker 3 (16:11): Okay. Roy (16:11): She, um, uh, so the, the, some of the other information, she was about 20, uh, she had been there, they think for about five to 10 years and, uh, they speculate that her age was 25 to 35 at the time of discovery. So kind of applying a little bit of simplistic math to that. You would think that her current age today would have been probably in the 32 to 47 range. So if, if you know, somebody who was missing that may be in that, you know, 32 to 47 that went missing, uh, when would that have been, you know, maybe 2008 to 2013, that kind of fits that timeframe? Um, Speaker 3 (17:02): She was, uh, Roy (17:05): They, uh, speculate that she was of mixed descent, probably of, uh African-American and, uh, French Cajun, uh, origin, if I'm not mistaken, when I was going to put this up, sorry about that. I was gonna, uh, I'm gonna put up a little, we're gonna try this and see what it comes out like on our recording. But, um, this is some of the information that we found here on the evangelism parish, Jane DOE, uh, yeah, she was of mixed Cajun French and African descent, female in, um, Speaker 3 (17:46): So one Roy (17:47): Thing else we did, we reached to the Louisiana state police, uh, of course it's an ongoing investigation, so they were not willing to either provide us with more information or, you know, we did offer them a chance to come on and talk with this. And again, uh, because it's an ongoing investigation and I think that's something that we have both, uh, come to terms with a few of the other cases that we've been investigating, basically the same thing. So a lot of times we're going to be able to provide to you information that we found, um, doing internet searches, just because of the, uh, thirties, uh, you know, they need to hold some of this information close just in case they, uh, do make an arrest that, uh, it, it makes it a little more difficult when some information is out in the public. They like to hold it and that way they can use it in interrogation. Scarlett (18:48): Yeah. And, um, I know that we had talked about this pre show. Um, you know, and I'm just so curious that, so it looks like, you know, they, they reported that they found a skull with possibly some teeth. And then, um, you made the, you know, you brought up the thought that if it's she's, you know, they were able to tell that she was female, possibly they found other remains the pelvis, uh, and whatnot. Um, you know, I wish we, you know, too bad. We're not, we don't have any forensic knowledge. I I'm just so curious, you know, how much is needed to do, um, one of these facial reconstructions, you know, how, how much DNA, how much, how much goes into that originally, we don't have those answers. Um, but unfortunately with this case, uh, they weren't able, or they haven't been able to, or they're working or they're backlog, but there there's no image to match this report. Roy (19:38): Yeah. And I had read that they have sent the remains to LSU and, uh, LSU has an awesome program where they do some facial reconstruction. I'm sure that they are, you know, trying, uh, the other thing that's really popular now is, uh, looking at DNA and going backwards is because if I'm just like myself, if something happened to me, they looked at my DNA. Um, if I don't have any in the system and it can get that way, you can get in the system a lot of ways, either through a criminal convictions, it can get there through, um, I think some military police school districts. So there's a lot of ways that your DNA can get in the system, but when somebody is found, they can't do, they can't match their DNA. So what they can do now is they will kind of start working it backwards to see if they can find some relatives and then narrow it down that way. Roy (20:36): And kind of how that works is, uh, like myself, I've gone through, uh, uh, Google 23 and me, but people cannot access, uh, DNA there to do a comparison. So there are a couple of other services. One of them that I'm aware of is it's Jed match GED match. And basically if you upload your DNA there, you're given the authorities the, uh, permission to, you know, try to match it against these unknown cases in that way. It may even if it, you know, if it wasn't me, it may be, uh, you know, they may find somebody that it links close to me. And then, you know, they start the conversation. Is it, you know, brother, sister, father, mother, child, or, you know, they can, our cousin, you know, they start seeing how far away you are, uh, uh, I guess, of a match to this particular DNA. Roy (21:32): And then they can kind of start down that path of figuring out who it may have been. And it's funny because that's actually how the, uh, the 46 year old case that they just solved here in Fort worth. That was part of how that happened was, you know, they found a way to work with this, uh, smaller bit of DNA. And, uh, they matched it to the guy's brother actually. So, you know, they got a match through the, uh, through Jed match, I think. And then they said, well, um, it come up, it comes up as one of these three brothers, we just don't know who, so then they started taking their DNA into, got a positive match on it. So very interesting. The technology that we have today. Scarlett (22:19): Yeah. W I was just going to say, since you brought up Jed match, that was also, you know, gained a lot of notoriety for the golden state killer Joseph Dangelo was, um, they used family DNA and were able to place him, you know, bring him his DNA to the crime scene as well. So it's just interesting. Roy (22:37): So anyway, um, if you have, you know, if you have a loved one that's missing, if you have any more information, uh, you know, if you were in the area at the time and maybe know more about this person, uh, you know, this, uh, young lady who she may have been, where she might've been from, please reach out to either, uh, the veal plat, um, police department. You can reach out to the Vangelis parish Sheriff's department, or the Louisiana state police is involved. So, uh, just reach out to one of those and, uh, you know, please let them know what, you know, it may be able to help solve this and at least give, uh, give her a name. Roy (23:18): All right. If nothing else we'll move on to the next one, this one here. Uh, actually we just paired it, uh, with this other shorter case, it's really not out of, uh, Southwest Louisiana, but it is very current. And that's why, it's why we felt the need to go ahead and put it out. This, this lady is actually missing from the, uh, Fort worth Texas area. Her name is Carolyn Riggins, and she is age 70, about five, nine, and about 200 pounds. So, um, basically she was, uh, at a bingo hall playing bingo at the, and then just turned up missing. And they, this, she eventually, she went missing from on July 11th. So it's been, um, we're going on big, going on three months now. Speaker 4 (24:17): Yeah, Roy (24:17): Yeah. She, uh, let's see, she was last seen July 11th, around 10:30 PM at the Watauga road. Bingo, for those familiar, with the area that's at, uh, mid cities Boulevard and, um, roof, snow area think they caught her. She was on camera at the bingo parlor. And then also they saw her car driving by the convenience store that was up on the corner. They really didn't see that she was the one driving, but they did. Uh, they did see the car go by. So, uh, by, you know, accounts from people there that she had one, uh, several jackpots that night and, uh, on the days leading up to that, that she had won, uh, some, some other smaller pots. So they feel like that she may have had a lot of cash on her, or if somebody had been watching her, they felt like that she had a, um, had a lot of cash with her. Uh, she was last, seen her car is a tan Speaker 4 (25:19): Or pewter. I've read both, Roy (25:22): Uh, on this flyer. It says tan 2002 Lincoln town car, Texas license plate, C Speaker 4 (25:27): E G B one four five three C G B one four five three. Roy (25:34): Uh, this poster is off of the, uh, find Carolyn, uh, Facebook page. There's also an Instagram page. And then, uh, finding Carolyn at, um, Twitter as well. They also have a website set up so you can send, uh, if you have any information, send it to info@findingcarolyn.com. There is a $5,000 reward for, uh, tips leading to find her, you know, this is kind of a kind of strange number one. I know the area of very well. Um, so, you know, I, I can place exactly where this bingo place is while she may have come out of there. Uh, what's bizarre though, is that, that I have read that she was there, like at 10 30 at night and left, and her car was seen early the next morning, about 30 miles North of there, uh, on our 35 in Denton, Texas at the highway three 80 interchange. Roy (26:36): So, um, again, it was just picked up on a license scan, so there's no picture who was driving the car, but, um, yeah, it's just, uh, it's certainly sad for the family again, uh, uh, us had messaged, uh, one of the family members. They were, um, at the time we had talked, they were still setting up, uh, they were a new search for some wooded areas that were behind this, uh, being go parlor. So they were kind of involved in that and I don't think they really had the time to give us, so, uh, hopefully we'll try to catch back up with them because, uh, it was her sister. I would love to have her on as a guest and talk to her more about this. Um, there were really not much else there have been no transactions on any of her cards, our credit report. Roy (27:32): Um, she did have her purse, but she didn't have her cell phone as for some reason she'd left it at home. So, uh, the, she does take medication that she does not have. So, um, then, you know, that's another reason why the family is desperately trying to find her because it's been so long. The, um, that's really about all I know, but because it was timely, you know, we felt like that, uh, from looking at the distribution of listeners that we've had in the past, you know, we do have a pretty good crowd out of the DFW area. So we felt like it would be, uh, you know, worth, at least mentioning this, to see if we can generate some information for the family. Scarlett (28:23): Yeah. Um, I guess just one thing to add, and again, um, this is possible. So on the Facebook page, someone had, uh, you know, maybe it could be a lead, maybe not a lead, maybe just something to think about in the background. Uh, if anyone's thought of maybe checking, uh, WinStar casino, it's, uh, North of Denton, if she had been, you know, if the bingo parlor had closed or her maybe not even her or whoever maybe was driving that vehicle that they pinged at 10:30 PM, or I'm sorry, 5:30 AM on July 12th the next day. Possibly it was on its way to the casino. Roy (28:59): Yeah. That casino is just across the red river in Oklahoma. So yeah, that, that is definitely a possibility. And you know, this is, uh, one of the cases, again, you know, as we said, I said in the beginning, don't want to speculate because there there's so many things that could have happened. And, uh, you know, what we're hoping is that they can still bring her home alive, but the, um, this is kind of the, kind of, one of those interesting parts is that, uh, they have not found the car either. So how does the, you know, how does Carolyn and the car go missing and not be seen for three months? Because, um, you know, generally even if the car had been abandoned, you know, the, they run the plates, they figure out, at least we have that. So another thing that I know that the family has been doing is looking along, uh, you know, 35 going towards that casino to see, uh, you know, if there's ditches that a car could have run off in that you couldn't see them or bodies of water that it might have gone into as well. Roy (30:04): Um, and that happens, um, again, you would think in a huge metropolitan area like this, that that's an impossibility, but I'll tell you it's not actually a ride out here, uh, close to my house about, uh, well, it's been a few months ago. It was back during the summertime. There was a car, two people in it. They had just run off of, um, a major interstate, but they hit down into a ditch and a culvert at just the right angle that you could not see them from the road bed. So about two, three days later, there's a guy has a flat tire running down the road, pulls over and just happens to pull over right on top of this vehicle. And, um, you know, he looked down and saw him and unfortunately one of the gentlemen passed away. The other was saved. But, uh, you know, again, it's stranger things have happened that you can run off the road in a huge metropolitan on the major highway that, you know, has thousands of cars going over to every day and still not be seen. Scarlett (31:16): Right. And I just so much sympathy for her family. You know, I can't imagine something like this, you know, she was a mother and a grandmother and just not really having the answers of, you know, what happened that night. Roy (31:29): Exactly. Exactly. So if you have any information, uh, we'll just kind of recap if you have any information on Carolyn K Riggins, again, she's missing out of Fort worth, Texas since, uh, July 11th of this year, 2020. And then, um, the other case that we covered is the oops, the evangelists and Jane DOE, uh, she was found in, uh, evangelism parish. I'm sorry. Yeah. Ville Platte. Yeah. Veal plaid in evangelism parish, uh, Louisiana, uh, she was found in 2018, but they suspect again that she had been there for, uh, five to 10 years and they, uh, estimated her age to be about 25 to 35 when she went missing. So, um, if you have any information on that, please again, reach out to the proper authorities and let's see if we can, uh, help solve one of these two cases. That's really all I've got. Um, again, uh, we're going to kind of find our way through this been interesting, uh, also using new technology, like I said, uh, we had, uh, anticipated doing the audio for the podcast for sure. But then we, uh, decided to try to couple it with the recording and, uh, try to put it up on YouTube as well. We'll see, uh, see how that goes. And if you have, uh, something nice to say, please reach out and let us know. Don't, don't be mean we're still, Scarlett (33:04): We're trying, we're gonna figure it out. Roy (33:07): But, uh, yeah, if you have some, uh, positive critiquing, please let us know. Uh, you know, we want to make the show interesting where people want to listen. Uh, and we also want to, you know, try to help help these families as much as we possibly can to so anything we can do along those realms, if you have any case submissions, please reach out to one of us. Uh, um, roy@mysteriesofthebayou.com or scarlet@mysteriesofthebayou.com, or you can hit us on either Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, um, uh, yeah, we will be up on LinkedIn, uh, but also, um, Instagram be sure and reach out. Scarlett (33:50): Yes, we do dove Nido wing doves as well. We take down and smoke, so smoke mail as well or anything we're connected on everything. Roy (33:57): Exactly. Yeah. And, uh, Scarlet just met awesome, uh, technology. She just messaged me like, Hey, you forgot something here. Definitely. Uh, you know, we're just starting out. And so w we want to have a mission to help other businesses as they're starting out. We've. Um, the first one again, is up here in the Dallas Fort worth area. It just happened to be going to another place to eat last weekend, drove by an old, uh, farmer's market. And lo and behold, they had turned it into the Cajun, a Cajun market in Colleyville, Texas. So, um, went in, talked to the Phil and Debra, really nice people there got me some Bhutan and some cracklin. So it was, uh, it was really good. Uh, he had some good product and, uh, that's one thing I miss about not living in Louisiana. And the Southwestern part is the, uh, the Bhutan. Roy (34:57): I could, I could eat that stuff every day. So it was nice to find a place. And, uh, yeah, if you're a new business that has anything to do with the Southwest Louisiana area, also reach out to us. We'd love to drop a plug in for you and, uh, you know, try to help try to help these new businesses has gotta be tough with the COVID and everything that's going on. Starting a new business is tough any day of the week, but with the COVID on top of that and everything that's going on, I'm sure that it's even more difficult. So we want to get out patronize them and, uh, you know, show a little love for, for these guys for sure. Scarlett (35:34): Okay. Roy (35:38): All right. So before we go, Scarlet, do you have anything else? Scarlett (35:43): Uh, no. Just, I want to thank everybody for listening and, you know, think our family, I hope they're listening as well as the whole movie. You know, few fan base are already at least. Hi dad. Roy (35:56): We got our, we got our two followers already. Yup. All right. Well until next time I'm Roy I'm Scarlet. Y'all be careful. Be careful out there.

The Overnight Underground Podcast, now the headlines:  Police using SWAT, pepper spray and knight sticks for social distancing. You won’t social distance, that’s a shooting. A Gun and knife fight battle winner in Florida. The Supreme Court flush and Trump’s butler did it.  These stories & more coming up on today’s Overnight Underground News. I’m John Ford.   Social distancing SWAT In the US, the lockdown is definitely taking a toll and driving people and that includes the police, totally and completely nuts. Case in point: In Odessa, Texas the sheriff sent in a SWAT team to clear a protest outside a bar. The Bar, Big Daddy Zanes, was open despite going against the Governors order for bars, gyms and salons to remain closed. Bar owner Gabrielle Ellison speaking to KLBC TV. You know, you got to be careful or you could get "tooken".  Cops rough up non-social distancers In New Jersey, Jersey City cops are under fire today for allegedly roughing up a group of black men for social distancing violations. Video has surfaced that shows a white cop repeatedly punching an African American man while another cop pins him to the ground. Police report six officers responded to a fight that involved somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred people. Police used pepper spray and batons to break up the crowd and their heads. Social media finger pointers are saying the cops used excessive force to enforce social distancing and the PoPo is saying the cops used just  the right amount of force for the violent situation. Who you gonna believe?  Social distance? That’s a shooting All right, what’s next? In Oklahoma City on wednesday, two customers shot two McDonald's employees after being told to leave the restaurant due to coronavirus restrictions. CNN reports the perps got angry and started shootin’ when they were asked to leave due to the plague restrictions. Two suspects were apprehended after fleeing the scene. The Hamburgler could not be reached for comment.  Gun and knife fight winners Well, we may finally have the answer to who wins in the knife fight, gun fight challenge. Two Tampa Mensa members may have finally answered the question, unfortunately one of them is dead. It seems two men were role playing the gun vs knife fight scenario when the gun went off, killing the knife wielding man. That’s Tampa prosecutor Anthony Falcone. According to Fox thirteen Tampa Bay, the shooter, twenty four year old Neil Gallagher, is facing manslaughter charges. His defense? He didn’t know the gun was loaded.  Jogging will kill you And of course there’s the case of the unarmed black jogger in Georgia who appears to be being hunted and is then shot and killed back in February. A video is causing outrage online. The two men in the video who allegedly shot and killed the jogger, Ahmaud Arbery, have not been charged.  Supreme court flush OK, enough of all that mayhem, here’s the sound byte of the day. Yesterday the Supreme Court heard oral arguments over teleconference, due to the dangers of coronavirus. Yet it seems that some of the better arguments came out the other end.  While attorney Roman Martinez was passionately arguing in Barr v. American Association of Political Consultants, listeners, and that includes everyone with an inclination to bend an ear due to the fact that the proceedings were streamed live on the internet, clearly heard a toilet flush in the background. Although Martinez was speaking at the time of the flush, it’s not clear who pushed the plunger. It could have been the notorious RBG, Aleto, Roberts, you name it. We hear from reliable sources that they are all, literally full of sh*t. In another ironic twist at the court, during arguments about robocalls, Justice Stephen Breyer was cut off when someone tried calling him. The Justice said, Quote: “I don't think it was a robocall." It was probably just Mark from Microsoft calling from Mumbai about all those infections on Breyer’s computer.  Worse than Pearl Harbor We actually have another candidate for sound byte of the day today on the Overnight Underground. President Trump on Wednesday compared the coronavirus pandemic to Pearl Harbor and nine eleven. Needless to say, a lot of Twatters were offended and outraged, because that’s just how they roll. The President also reversed his earlier decision to disband the coronavirus task force. He said he, quote: “had no idea how popular the task force is.” Probably more popular than his current ratings.  The butler did it.  The President’s personal valet has tested positive for Covid-19, but Trump and his docs say he’s A OK. The valets are members of the military and work closely with the President and and the first family. According to The New York Post and other sources, the valet started exhibiting symptoms on Wednesday and later tested positive for coronavirus. The news has reportedly, quote: “hit the fan” in the west wing. Nothing a good dose of bleach won’t fix.  Avoid driving in Georgia Here’s a reason to stay the hell off the roads in Georgia, twenty thousand teens have received their driver licenses without a road test.  It’s all part of Georgia's way of handling the backlog of the thousands of road tests that have been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. And while you’re at it, you might want to avoid driving in Wisconsin as week. The state announced that it will start doing the same for teen drivers, starting Monday. Oh these kids today, try parallel parking a ‘70s Lincoln Town Car as part of your driving test and then get back to me.

He was 64. It was the third launch for Hughes in one of his homemade rockets and part of his eventual plan to be able to determine for himself, up in the sky, if Earth was as flat as he proclaimed to believe. A steel ladder was attached to the rocket's launch ramp to make it easier for Hughes to enter the cockpit. But when the rocket launched, it hit the ladder, setting the launch on course for disaster. "It ripped off a parachute can, which deployed the parachute, which got caught in the thrust of the rocket and kind of took the rocket off course a little bit," said Justin Chapman, a freelance journalist who was at the launch site. The steam-powered rocket wobbled and did a huge arc before crashing less than a minute later. "He went way up in the sky," Chapman said. "I'm not sure how high. But his goal was 5,000 feet. Then it did an arc and then came straight down and nose-dived into the desert floor about half a mile away from the launch pad." Hughes also launched in Winkelman, Ariz., in 2014, traveling 1,374 feet, according to the AP. Before taking up rocketry, Hughes was a stuntman who jumped limousines. He holds the record for the longest limousine ramp jump, according to Guinness World Records. Hughes jumped a 6,500-pound Lincoln Town Car stretch limo 103 feet at Perris Auto Speedway in 2002. "He was trying to re-create the Snake River Canyon jump that Evel Knievel tried years ago," Chapman said. "And I think that ultimately didn't come together. But he did just jump limos over big distances and then moved on to building his own rockets and launching himself that way." "He was often lonely and felt his accomplishments as a daredevil had been forgotten," they wrote. "Ultimately, he just wanted to lead a meaningful life. He had very little money, but he found a way to bring excitement and purpose to his life by doing affordable stunts with rockets that he built himself using spare parts." Chapman says that Hughes "fully understood the risks" of his rocket launches. "He knew very well, he said very often, that this thing could kill you, he was very well aware of that. He was a daredevil and he was driven by this compulsion to do extraordinary things and inspire people, as he put it." Stakes simply called Hughes the "greatest daredevil this country has ever seen." On January 23, 2000, already battered by an ice storm, the rural Alabama resort town of Mentone was about to be struck by an even more terrfying freak catastrophe. Hurtling down the highway in a Lincoln Town Car was Hayward Bissell, a 400-pound madman on a murder rampage. Ramming the pickup truck of Don and Rhea Pirch, Bissell lured Don Pirch on to the road, running him down with his car. Bissell next targeted the home of James and Sue Pumphrey. After stabbing James Pumphrey in the stomach Bissell was thwarted by two family dogs, who gave their lives to protect their owners. Their sacrifice bought the Pumpreys enough time to get a gun and scare off Bissell-who didn't know the weapon was actually inoperable. When Bissell was finally stopped, police discovered that he wasn't alone. Occupying the passenger seat beside him was the mutilated, partially dismembered body of his pregnant girlfriend, Patricia Ann Booher. In February 2002, Bissell pled "guilty but insane" and was sent to prison for life. Was he really crazy? Or was he a psychopath trying to avoid a death sentence.. Well, lets open our Bibles up this morning to James 5. Can you believe that we are finishing this series that we have been on for weeks, months, and were finally coming to an end of this Book? I hope that this is not the end of your study of James. I hope that you will continue studying it, and then when you do refer back to it, it will mean more to you than it ever did before we started this series. When I was a new believer, I was 17 years old, in our newly-formed church in Rockford, I had a Sunday School teacher named Roger. He had come out of the hippie movement. He had been a drug addict and had had a dramatic conversion to the Lord. He was one of those cool guys, cool teachers. Some of the teachers could be kind of dry and boring, but not Roger. He was hip; he was cool. He could speak our lingo, so we really enjoyed our class. We really learned a lot from Roger. In fact, because we had mutual friends, I would spend some time with Roger from time to time. I really enjoyed his company. One particular day, there was a church service going on in the house across the street from my sister, and it was really loud. It was a hyper-Pentecostal kind of a church; so he was like, Lets go check it out. I was like, No, no, no. Im not going in there. He said, Come on! Lets go check it out. Ill go with you. So we went in there, and it was like nothing Id ever seen before. They called people forward for prayer for the sick. Apparently everybody was sick because if you were in the room, you were coming forward for prayer; so everybody lined the walls and had to come around. The pastor occasionally would start hopping across the stage on one leg with his tambourine. His face was red, and he was shouting and screaming. People were on the floor convulsing and shaking. Im thinking, What is this? What is this? Next thing you know, Im in line, and Im like, I dont want to do that. I really dont. You brought me here, but I want to leave. So we came to an exit near a side wall, and right when we got to that exit, we cut out. We left the building. We got outside, and it was like, Oh, man! That was crazy. He said, You know, thats just another expression of the Body of Christ. Theres nothing wrong with what they did. Its just that we all worship God in different ways, and thats how they choose to worship the Lord, so I got a nice lesson on how the church operates. But we walked out of the church, and that was very symbolic because shortly after that, Roger walked away from Christ. He went back to a life of drugs. Years later, from what I knew, he was not serving Christ, not serving the Lord. How does that happen? The Bible talks about the fact that sometimes within the Body of Christ, there are believers who we think are believers, but theyre really not. They have confessed to Christ, but they dont possess Christ. Their conversion experience for whatever reason really wasnt real, really wasnt true. They really didnt have the Holy Spirit inside of them empowering them to live a Godly life. The Bible talks about this. Jesus says in the Parable, The Wheat and the Tares, in Matthew 13, Sometimes within the church, there are wheat and tares. A tare looks just like wheat, and it grows with the wheat. Its not separated until harvest time. Jesus explained the Parable later on, and He said, Thats the way it is. The tares grow amongst the wheat, and then at harvest time, God will separate the real from the fake, the true from the counterfeit. In fact, at the judgment, Jesus once said to people who professed Him and called Him Lord, And Lord, in Your name, did we not do miracles? In Your name, did we not cast out demons? He said, Depart from Me, I never knew you, not I knew you at one time and dont anymore, but I never at any point knew you. Never at any point did you belong to Me as a follower, as a child of God. Counterfeit Christians, theyre amongst us today. There are tares here today. They come to church every Sunday. They look like us; they talk like us, but there has not been-and God knows this-a true bringing to faith. They do not have the Holy Spirit residing within. If they did, they would stay in the church. They would stay with the believers, but the faith is not a true faith. John talks about this in 1 John 2:19 (page 1208 of pew Bibles). Id like for us to read that together. The Apostle John is talking about people who went apostate. They were in the church, and then they left the church. He said, They went out from us... Theyre not worshipping with us anymore. …they did not really belong to us. For if they had really belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. The fact that they went AWOL and they were not living for Christ is proof and evidence of the fact that they really didnt belong to us. They were simply going through the motions. How many of you know of people who once professed Christ and no longer do? Maybe they went to church with you and no longer do. Let me see your hands. All around this room, weve known people like that. Thats what James is going to talk about. Really, these are controversial verses, but they shouldnt be. Once you understand the target audience-who James is writing to-theyre not difficult to understand. In fact, this whole Book has been about a test of faith, hasnt it? You say, Heres the test: if you are a true believer, this is how you respond to trials. If you are a true believer, heres how you respond to temptations. If you are a true believer, here are the words you speak out of your mouth. If you are a true believer, here is how you react to a promise. In fact, in Chapter 4, he gives an appeal to conversion. He says, Repent. Come to Christ. Remember that Passage. He challenges them to come to Christ. Why? Because James knew that some of the people he was writing to did not know the Lord. They may have professed they knew the Lord or seemed to know the Lord, but they really didnt truly know Christ. James says, I know youre there, and Im telling you right now, Come to Christ. Repent of your sins. Belong to Him. Now hes not going to talk to the tares. Hes not going to be talking to those who are not truly believers. Hes going to talk to believers. This is what he says in Verse 19 (page 1199), My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. Now when you first read that in Verse 19, he says, My brothers, if one of you should wander… So right away we think-and heres where the misunderstanding comes in-that hes talking about backsliding Christians, apostate Christians; but hes not. We know that from the words he uses in Verse 20, and there are many of them. First of all, he says, Whoever turns… This is the word that means convert. You dont convert the converted. You dont turn those who are already followers of Christ. This word is always used in Scripture-every single time-as a reference to people who dont believe in Christ coming to Christ. It used by the Lord when He talks to Paul on the road to Damascus. He said, You are to turn the people from darkness to light, from the kingdom of Satan to God. The word turn is used there. It means to change your direction. Secondly, he uses the word sinner. The word sinner is never used of professing believers. Now we are sinners; its true. We do sin; thats true, but every time you look up the word sinner, this word in the Bible, While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, it always refers to people who dont know the Lord, who dont truly know the Lord. They may know about the Lord, but they dont truly know the Lord. Thirdly is the word save. You dont save those who are already saved. He said, Were going to save them, and we know were not talking about a deliverance from physical death, but deliverance from spiritual death because he says the word soul here. Deliver their soul from death. In the Greek, the word soul is present; so what are we talking about? Were talking about spiritual death. Were talking about salvation, and that is for the loss. That is for people who are apart from God. Then he talks about the fact that it covers a multitude of sins. That simply means that God is going to forgive their sins. Gods grace covers their sins, so theres no sin that cannot be forgiven. There is no quantity of sin that cannot be atoned for. His grace will cover their sin, so what were talking about is those within the church. Maybe there has been a tare amongst you. All of the sudden they have now departed from the church. Theyre not coming anymore. The hopes are that theyll come and get it. Theyll finally get it. Theyll catch on to the program and realize that they need to serve and follow Christ. He says, Youre to go after them. Youre to pursue them. Youre to bring them back to the way of the Truth. I was careless this week. I was carrying a heavy box of books down to the basement. Rather than turn on the light switch, I thought the ambient light coming in from the surrounding areas was going to be sufficient to see the stairs. I was too lazy to put the box down and flip the switch, and I paid the price. I got to the bottom of the steps; I tripped on the last step and fell forward onto the concrete basement floor. Writhing in pain, Oh, did that hurt! I landed on my knee and hurt my neck. I was down there a little bit in shock and was trying to figure out what was wrong. I thought Id really damaged my knee. I was down there just moaning, groaning, and writhing in pain. My dog, Penny, came to see what the commotion was about. She came to the top of the steps. She wasnt coming down. I dont know if she was afraid of me or was trying to figure out what the new game was that Dad was trying to play. She was looking at me from a distance; from the top of the steps, she was looking down at me in agony. She was studying me; her ears were up, and her head was tilted like, Whats going on? Why are you doing that? I was like, Oh, Penny! Im hurt! I dont know what I was expecting, but I can tell you this: there is no St. Bernard in my dog. I thought, You know, shes at least going to come down and give me a courtesy lick on the face to say, Listen, Id like to help ya, but Im a dog. I cant do anything for ya. I love ya. Im sorry youre in this condition. Im pulling for you to make it, and do your best. Thats what that would have demonstrated to me. Just come down and check on me, make sure Im okay. Give me the courtesy lick on the forehead and then Im good. Rather than doing that, my dog simply turns-while Im in pain, writhing in agony-and leaves and goes back to the couch! Nothing more I can do here. Hope you make it, big guy. Good luck to you. Im out of here. I have squirrels to watch, so off Penny went. I lay there for a long time, assessing my damage. I finally got up, went upstairs, and there she was just watching birds and squirrels out the bay window. When we think about these folks who have fallen-we think about these folks who are no longer living for the Lord and are in darkness-I wonder when you raised your hand and thought about that person, did you go after that person? Did you pursue them? Did you dare take a step down into the darkness with them and find out what was going on? Now, dont lick them on the head. Im not asking you to do that like my dog, but did you find out, Whats going on with you? How did you get here? Do you want to stay here? Why are you here? Can I give you a hand? Can I help you out of this darkness? Can I help you up? Can we go back up to where you were before? Thats what James is telling us to do. Hes saying, Go into the darkness. Find them. Reach down to them. Love on them. Dont lecture them! Dont yell at them! Whats wrong with you?!? Lift them up and say, Im here for you. Lets talk about how you ended up here. Lets talk about how we bring you back to where you used to be. That's what James is saying. James is saying, Take responsibility to bring that person who has wondered away from the church and finally, finally help them to cross the line of faith for real, and really give their life to Christ, really become a true believer and a true follower of Jesus Christ. Thats what hes saying, My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone… Who? Someone. Are you a someone today? He doesnt say, And the Apostles will bring him back to faith, or the elders will, or the pastors will bring him back to the faith. He says, Someone, anyone, if you love that person, realize what is at stake. Youre going to save their soul from death. The stakes are as high as they can possibly be. If you truly love somebody, you wont simply look at them in that fallen condition in the darkness and go, Tis, tis, too bad. Well, I have to get back to what Im supposed to do. Maybe Im afraid. I remember not talking to Roger, truthfully, when I was 17 when I heard that news because I was afraid. He was a tough guy before he became a Christian. Maybe he is that tough guy again. Maybe he wont like me. Besides, Im a kid. What am I going to do? What am I going to say to an adult? I was afraid. Probably my dog didnt come down those steps because she was afraid because I was acting funny. I was making a lot of strange noises, and she didnt know what was going on. James says, Take that risk. Make that walk. Descend to where theyre at. Help them up. Now there are two ways that we stray. I want to talk about both of them. The first way we can stray is doctrinally. If you stray doctrinally, probably morally/ethically, youre still going to be living an upright life. In fact, thats one of the reasons why we cant identify them because theyre fine citizens, right? Theyre good people, but they stray doctrinally. Theyve received some wrong information that caused them to depart from the truth of the Gospel. This happened time and time again. In fact, much of the New Testament is written to combat error. Paul would write or John would write, and they would correct wrong thinking, wrong information. Remember Paul said, Earnestly contend for the faith once and for all delivered to the saints. Gods Word, His revelation, is done. Its complete. You cant add to it or take away from it, but there are people who will twist and distort it. That happened in the First Century Church, and it happens today. Were to go after them and give them the right information. I went to go visit one of our members named Kilcha. Some of you know Kilcha. Shes Korean. She usually comes to the 11 oclock service and sits over here. Kilcha had a headache, and her friend encouraged her to go to the hospital. It turned out it was a brain aneurism. They caught it just in time. She had brain surgery that Sunday I found out about it. I preached the sermon first, and then I took off to try to find Kilcha at 11 oclock. She was at the UW Hospital in Madison recovering from brain surgery by the time I made it there. UW Madison is a big place, so I wanted to make sure that I knew exactly where my car was parked and exactly how to find her room. It worked out with my memory device because she was in the K Wing, and her name is Kilcha. So I went, This is a piece of cake. Im in the K Wing. Ill be able to find this, no problem. So I was given directions to the room, K423. You take the K elevator, and you go up to the fourth floor. No problem. I walked to the K elevator and went up to the fourth floor. I got up there, and it was a ghost town. There were no people, no patients, no doctors or nurses-nobody. There was nobody around. I was walking around thinking, Well, these are more administrative offices and laboratories. There are no patients here. She must be in another K Wing, so I went to another K Wing. I couldnt find it. I was walking around for 20 minutes up and down the same hallways going, Well, it says K. This has to be it. This is it. This is the only place the elevator would take me. Finally, I see a young man in blue jeans and a T-shirt walking around. I didnt know if he was the custodian or what his role was there. I said, Sir, could you help me? Im trying to find this. He said, Okay. Hmm, thats strange. Well, lets look. So we walked around for another 15 minutes in the same corroders. I wanted to tell him, You know, I can tell you right now this isnt going to do any good. Finally he started asking questions. He said, Hmm, I wonder if this is the correct information. Can you tell me what she had done? I said, Well, she had brain surgery done. Then he goes, Oh, yeah. I used to do that. Okay, so what did… He said it just like that, just kind of casually. It turned out before he came to UW Madison, he was a brain surgeon in California. I said, Whyd you stop? He said, I got tired of working 110-hour weeks. Now I only work 80-hour weeks. He said it just like that, Oh, I used to do that. You and I would be like, I have a Honda. I used to drive one of those. She had brain surgery. I used to do that. Okay, now lets look… We couldnt find her. When he couldnt find the room, I wanted to say so badly, Doctor, this isnt brain surgery… (Congregation laughing). But I thought, Im not going to do that. As soon as he found out it was brain surgery, he said, Were in the wrong place. We walked over to the elevator, and he said, Heres where they usually recover from brain surgery, so lets go to that floor and that wing even though its different from whats on the paper. He took me there. He got on the elevator; he walked me to that unit, and we found Kilcha. I was like, Wow, Doc, that was really nice of you. You took all that time. You got on the elevator with me. You took me to the unit. You figured it out. Thats awesome. Thanks. Thats what James is telling us to do. There are people who get wrong information, doctrinally-wrong information. They are wandering. Theyre lost. Theyre no longer in contact with the truth as it was delivered to the saints-the Gospel, the pure Gospel, theyve departed from that. Maybe theyre denying the deity of Christ. Maybe theyre denying the work on the cross or His Resurrection. It could happen to anybody. A friend of mine who was a pastor in Rockford started teaching in the 80s what was called the JDS or the Jesus Died Spiritually Doctrine. Have you heard of that? The way it goes is Christ died on the cross and then His Spirit descended into hell where he was tormented by Satan and demons for three days. He became a sinner in Hell. He took on all of our sin, and then finally He Himself had to be born again; and thats why Colossians said He is the first born of the dead. Then He was resurrected. He was teaching this, and I said, Thats heresy. Oh, but Pastor so-and-so says that its in this book, and hes really famous. I said, Thats heresy. Youre teaching that when Jesus says, It was finished, it wasnt finished. Youre teaching that the cross was not enough, that His blood was not sufficient to atone for my sins. He had to further descent into Hell and further experience more torment and be born again just like a man. Im telling you thats heresy. Around and around we went. I dont know if hes still teaching that today or not, but I do know that hes a friend. I care for him. I care for the people who are going to hear what he is teaching, so I challenged that. Remember when we shared about a pastor who came to Janesville, a Universalist pastor? He used to be one of the most dynamic pastors Id ever listened to in my life. Hes now traveling around the country. I showed you a picture of his mug months ago-a literal mug, not his face-a coffee mug. It had the Ten Commandments with a slash through it. Do you remember that? He was teaching, You dont need to worry about the Ten Commandments. You live any way you want to live because every single person on this planet is going to be saved and go to Heaven. It didnt matter what kind of life you lived. You could be a mass murderer and die shaking your fists at God, and you would go to Heaven. Thats what he taught. I wonder-I dont know that guy personally-but I wondered if anybody confronted him. Did anybody take him to the Scriptures and say, Listen to what youre teaching. Listen to how youre leading people astray. Paul would do that. Even Paul once went astray, and Paul confronted Peter. Friends, there are a lot of people with the wrong information. If thats the case, James says, We go to them and say, Listen, youve departed from the truth. Paul did this with the Galatians when he said, You are following a different Gospel. This is not the Gospel I taught you. This is not the true Gospel. Paul said, If I were to come back and teach a different Gospel or an angel from Heaven were to come to you and preach a different Gospel from the one youve heard, let him be accursed. Sometimes people will err doctrinally. The second way they err is morally. They wander away from the faith morally. Theyre living a lifestyle that no longer honors God. Im not talking about our sin, our struggle with sin. We all struggle with sin. Were all sinners. Youre being taught this morning by a sinner. I hope you understand that. We are all sinners in this place in need of grace, in need of a Savior. Were all in the same boat. Im talking about a person who in defiance-in defiance-is living a lifestyle that he or she knows does not honor and please God. They know its contrary to the Word of God, and theyre there. Thats a false believer. James says, You go after that person and try to be used of God to make them become a true believer. I was driving home after an adventurous week, I guess. I dropped my son off at UW-Milwaukee, and I was heading home on the interstate. I was going 65 MPH, the speed limit. There was really nobody in front of me. There was a gap where there were no cars in front of me, and there were some cars behind me. A deer came out of the woods. Id never hit a deer before, but Ive heard many stories about what its like. Immediately, my anxiety level went up. He walked to the edge of the interstate and stood there. I was like, Oh, please, just go back in the woods. Go back where its safe. Dont come this way. Then he slowly started to walk on the interstate. He was on the right lane-actually physically standing on the interstate. I went into the left lane. I couldnt stop-you understand that-because there were cars behind me coming 70 MPH. I had to move forward, so I went into the left lane, and when I got close, I sped up because I was trying to get around him. That speeding up may have saved my life. I think the slower you go, if you hit your brakes, the more apt they are to roll right into your car through the windshield. If you can drive through them, which I didnt want to do and you dont want to do, but if your lifes on the line, you do what you have to. If you go through them, then its less likely for that to happen; so I hit the gas, and as soon as I did that, this deer ran right in front of the car. I hit that deer full on, a full-on collision. I propelled it like 30 feet off into the meridians. I knew there was no way [it would live]. It was probably instant death for that deer. My car was in bad shape. I could tell. I drove really slowly, and as it got dark, I had a really good view of the treetops on my left with my headlights. It wasnt such a good view of the road. I knew I was leaking fluids, and I had no heat. Finally, I made it home. If you remember seeing me in a Toyota Prius, you wont see me in that Prius anymore. Thats gone. I had to call my sister and say, Can I have my Lincoln Town Car back? I went from a Prius to a Lincoln. Its a 2001, so now Im driving that again. What a contrast of cars. Ill now get 15 miles to the gallon when I used to get 45. The car is gone. There are sometimes when people we know leave the safe area. Theyre in the church; but theyre not truly following Christ, but theyre in the church. Thats a good place to be, and they wander away. They head to that danger zone. They head where life is not safe. They wander away from the Commandments of God. They put themselves in harms way. How long do they do that before we intervene? Is it as they start walking out of the woods and toward that direction? Is it when they get on the highway, or is it when they start to come into traffic and put themselves in harms way where their lives could literally be on the line? I had a friend who I thought was a moral guy, a good guy. He occasionally went to church and seemed to profess Christ; but at a certain point, he just completely walked away from what hed been taught. He was living a destructive lifestyle, so I and a couple of other friends went to him and said, You have to change. You need the Lord. You need Christ. He wouldnt listen. He got angry at us instead. We went there in love and said, We love you. Were afraid for you. He lost his car; he lost his girlfriend; he lost his job; he lost his house and became addicted to cocaine and created other problems in his life. He was totally living an un-Godly life. Im so happy to say that God has worked in his life, and today he has a job. Hes a productive member of society again. He seems to be doing really well with his life, but we did an intervention with him. Maybe there are some folks that you need to do an intervention for. In fact, that's one of my goals this morning is that we can be catalysts. If you know somebody who used to live an upright life and has totally turned their backs on the things of God, how far do you let them wander before you say, You know what? I love you. I care about you. Im concerned for the way youre living your life. Im concerned that your life is going to end up destroyed because of the decisions that youre making. If you truly love somebody, you wouldnt let them walk onto the interstate, would you-if it was in your power to grab them, stop them and pull them back, and say, Go back to the place of safety. Go back where youre loved and supported? Would you not do that? Yet, sometimes there are people that we know, and we simply allow them to go under harms way without lifting a finger to try to stop them. James makes an appeal to those who are true believers. He says, If somebody wanders from your faith, doctrinally, morally, you have a responsibility to pursue them. They may not listen to you. They may become angry with you, but what if they dont? What if they listen? What if God uses you to bring them to repentance? James says, Youll know that God has used you to save their souls-cover a multitude of sins. Lets pray together. Father, we want to pray right now for the message that we have heard. Lord, in our minds eye, some of us can see people. We know who they are. We know their situation. We want to pray for those who have departed from the faith doctrinally and morally, with wrong information. Theyre lost. Theyre meandering and wandering away from the Truth. There are some who have morally turned their backs on what Your Word says. Theyre living on dangerous ground because theyre operating and living a lifestyle that is contrary to what the Creator, the Designer, has said. Its only a matter of time before they reap what they have sown. We who love them should be concerned about them, so I want to pray for them. I want you, in your minds eye right now, to think about that person. Name their name. Say, Father, I pray for… and name their name. Pray that they will come to faith in Christ. Pray that they will repent and change directions. Pray that they can be saved. Pray that they can know that You love them, that Christ died for them. Pray that they could truly enter in to a genuine experience where they put their hope and trust in Jesus Christ. I pray this morning-if youre here this morning and youre listening to this, and youre thinking, Im not sure Ive truly given my life to Christ, I pray this morning youll say, Lord Jesus, I give You my heart and life. Forgive my sins. I ask Your Holy Spirit to come inside of me, to empower me, to cleanse me and make me a new person. Lord, I want to live for You all the days of my life. Because of Your Resurrection, I have the hope of eternal life because I belong to You. Receive me as Your son, as Your daughter this morning. I pray that youd pray that pray in sincerity of heart. I pray that youd go through the motions and become a true follower of Christ. Father, I pray that those we identify, that we will actually go after them. Well make some phone calls. Well knock on some doors. Well send some emails and say, Can we get together? Can we talk? I pray we will have the courage and the insight to tell them we love them and help them to go down to the darkness, pick them up, and bring them the restoration. I pray we bring them the right information in place of wrong. Father, equip us for that, empower us for that. I pray in Jesus name, Amen.

Lets open our Bibles to Genesis 1 this morning. While youre looking at Genesis 1, I think most of you can find that, I think of the words of the Psalm thats in Chapter 8 (Page 535 of pew Bibles). He says, When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your hands…what is man that You are mindful of him… He looked to the cosmos, and he said, What is man? Who am I that You would care about me? This morning on our tour, Worldview Tour, were talking about anthropology, the nature of man. Now that sounds boring at first. Anthropology?!? Man! I wish I wouldnt have come. Its not boring. Its not boring when you find out who God made you to be, so lets take a look at Genesis 1:26. In creation, God has been very active in making the world. Right before He makes man, he pauses. There is a conference, if you will, a consultation amongst the Trinity. Even here in the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, we see the triune nature of God. We see Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Bible says, Then God said let us make man in our image, in our likeness. Notice the plural. The word God here, Elohim, is plural in the original Hebrew. When God speaks, its in the plural. He says, Let us make man in Our image. So already we see Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in community, speaking about our creation. There is a pause. He doesnt just go right into man; there is a consideration, if you will, a discussion in the Godhead. Then God creates man in his image. How many of you ever read that weve been created in an image of God and just wonder, What does that mean? Does that mean that God has a nose and ears like we do? Does that mean He has feet like us and looks like us? Is that what it means? Does God have hair, and were made in His image? Were going to take a look at the creation of man, and then were going to talk a little bit about what it means when we say that we have been made in the image of God. Chapter 2:7 really is what happens after Verse 26. In fact, you could take out much of that first part of Chapter 2 from Verse 7 on and put it right in there after Verse 26 because Verse 27 is sort of a summary after Hes already created woman. In Chapter 2, He has not yet created her as He has man. Adam is there, and he is lifeless. He is flesh; he is bone, and he is lifeless. Remember, were taught in the world that were made out of the stuff in the box, the stuff in the cube. Everything that we see is all that there is and all there ever will be, and that is the stuff from which you and I come. But yet, we know as we look at man that we see stuff thats not in the box. Thats what were going to find in Genesis 2:7. It says (Page 2), The Lord God formed the man with the dust of the ground, the stuff in the box, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. What God breathed into man is not in the box. Its not the stuff of earth. Its not the stuff in the cube. Its what makes us in His image. Man became a living being, or a living soul, and only here-and only for man-are these words used. No other creation is described in this way. But when the creation of man comes, he is described as a living soul-a nephish haiah-made in the image of the living God. I believe the image of the living God is…when we look at creation, what we see in man that is unique and distinct from other creation; that is in part what it means to be made in the image of God. Now, were going to put up a little list this morning that is not meant to be exhausted at all. Im sure you might be able to identify other characteristics, other uniqueness, that make us in the image of God, but here are a few. Lets put up the first one (C-R-E-A-T-E). Think of the words Create Man. How did God create man? He created him in His image. What does that mean? The C stands for create. The word Create and the C also stand for create. That part of the image barring is that you and I can create. Now, we cant create like God creates. God creates Ex Nihilo. He creates from nothing. Theres nothing, and then theres something. Thats how God creates. We can use the stuff that God has made, and we can create. My daughter makes beautiful paintings and drawings. She creates them on blank canvas. You might be able to build a house. You might be able to design landscaping. You might be able to build a machine or make an invention. Man can design and create. We can take the stuff that God has made, put it together and arrange it in a complex manner, and make something. Thats what I mean by create and design. Only man can do that. Im sure a beaver can build a damn, but Im talking about something complex that requires thought process, complexity of design that only man can create. Its part of what it means to be made in the image of God. He is the creator so that you and I can create. He is the designer so you and I design. The R stands for reason. Some of you might want to scratch some of these things down because youre not going to find this in a book somewhere. If it will help you to understand what the image of God is, write it down. So R is for reason. Reason makes us unique in that we can think. We can process information. We can make sense of the world around us. We can draw conclusions; we can discern. Part of being made in the image of God is the ability to reason. The next letter E stands for ethics. Romans says that God has put a sense of right or wrong inside of each one of us. We just know innately whether something is right or wrong. Have you ever had a little child, if you have children, and when youve come home, the child is acting sad with his/her head down or afraid, and you say, What did you do? You dont even know what they did, but you know they did something because they are acting like they are ashamed of something. God has put that innate in each of us, the knowledge of right and wrong. Hes written His law on our hearts. The A stands for authority. God created man to have authority and dominion. He said in that Verse 26 that Hed given authority over the creatures of the sea, on land, and in the air. We can make Shamoo, the whale, obey us. We can make the lion, the king of the beast, jump through hoops. Man has dominion in the earth. He is the highest form of life. God has authority and dominion. Because we are made in His image, we have authority and the ability to rule. Thats part of being made in the image of God. T is a simple but profound one. Talk. We can talk. As we saw in the Godhead in Verse 26, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit talking about the creation of man, you and I can talk. You say, Well, my dog talks. He has different bark languages. Sure, animals can have distress, anger, and happiness, but try carrying on a conversation with your dog. Its a little different. Only man can communicate at the level that we do using complex words, and sentences, and thoughts. Man can speak and talk because God can speak. God talks. We saw that demonstrated in Verse 26 of Chapter 1. The E stands for eternal or eternity. It says, God breathed into man, and man became a living soul. Now, were not eternal in this sense that Gods eternal. God has always been and always will be. There was a time when we were not. We have not always been, but now that we are, we always will be. Were eternal, and only man is eternal as God: that is part of being made in His image. Lets look at the word Man. The M stands for me. Now, not me (Pastor Jeff is pointing to himself), you and me. Youre a me. The ability to know that youre a me, to have self-awareness, to be aware of whom you are, that you exist, and that you are a person; you have a personality. You exist. A self-awareness is something that creation does not have. They may know they exist, but they dont know theyre me. You have an identity and a personality. You dont just act on instinct. You have an awareness. A and N are in order here for a reason. The first one [A] is ascribe worth; that means worship. You and I can use our reason to form a deduction that God exists and choose to worship Him or not worship Him. The second part, the N is we can also choose to neglect God. Basically put those two together, and they stand for free will. Man was created with a free will, an ability to choose. God says to man, You can have any tree in the garden, any fruit in the garden except that tree and that fruit. What he laid in front of man was a choice. Man chose incorrectly. He said to Adam that day, which by the way means man. Adam is man. Some of us think that God was just picking out a nice name. Jesus, what do you think? Holy Spirit, what do you think? Adam? I like Adam. Adam means man. So, you read that and it says, …and then He formed Adam out of the earth. So He named him man, but man and Adam are the same thing. So Adam, or man, has the ability to acknowledge God and worship God or neglect God. Romans 1 says we can either exchange the truth for a lie, or we can suppress the truth and follow after a lie, exchange the glory of God. We can do that because we have free will. Thats how God created man. Its one of those things that makes us unique by design, one of the things that make us in the image of God. Now you might be able to come up with more, and thats good. Im not saying its exhausted, but, to me, those are some of the reasons-or some of the things that are encompassed-in being made in the image of God. Now we all know what happens in the next chapter. Man falls. Man partakes of the forbidden fruit. In essence, he disobeys God. Sin is sin. You might think, Well thats overkill. I think if my child took fruit I told him not to take, I wouldnt send judgment on the whole earth. Understand sin is sin. Man chose to disobey God. Man chose to rebel against God. That was the way he chose to do that. So, man fell. Man was still in the image of God, but we are not as we are fully intended to be. Man lost that communion with God, that community. Man could talk to God. In the Garden, man could have a conversation with God, and that is lost. Man is banished from His presence. God said in the Word, The day you eat of the fruit, you shall surely die. Adam partakes of the fruit, does he die? Physically, no, but spiritually, yes. He is separated from the presence of the living God. Do you ever go to a carnival and go into those mirrors at the funhouse? Theres the mirrors that make you look short and fat, and then there are the ones that make you look really tall and skinny? I like those. I stay in front of those for awhile, Look at that 15-inch waist! Look at that! Some of them make you look like you have a big head. You recognize thats you, and youre able to laugh at it because you know I dont really look like that. Its a distortion of reality. Theres enough that resembles what you really look like to recognize its you, but its not as youre intended to look. The same thing is true in creation and the fall. Mankind is now not what God fully intended mankind to look like and to be. Its enough resemblance that we recognize its mankind, but we are now a twisted, distorted reality from what God intends us to be, a creation of what God intends us to be, and from what He will restore us to be one day. One day, we will have communion with God and conversation with God, just like man had in the beginning. Well have that in Heaven. So, man is a fallen being. God is going to come, and He is going to give an accounting of mankind. How do we get in this state? What happened? Man sinned. When God comes into the Garden, Hes normally greeted by Adam and Eve, but this day He is not. Adam and Eve are not there; they are hiding. They are hiding because they know what they did was wrong. Nobody has to tell them. They are ashamed. There is an innate knowledge of right and wrong; and they know that they are naked, theyre ashamed, and they know theyre in trouble, so they hide. Thats usually what we do, isnt it? When we do something wrong, we try to conceal, cover up and hide because were embarrassed. We think were going to get in trouble, so we hide. God comes in and God makes them render in accounting of their actions. He says to the man, What have you done? How did you know you were naked? Did you partake of the fruit that I told you not to partake of? Adams response was, Well, its her, the woman you put here. She made me eat it. Its kind of Your fault, God. Then He turns to her and says, What do you have to say for yourself? She says, Well, its the serpent that You put here. So its nobodys fault but Gods, right? We laugh at that, but have you ever done that? Have you ever made bad choices in your life, and you reap bad consequences, and then you say, God, how could you let this happen to me? Nobody? Okay. Just thought Id ask. Sure! God is going to render out here the consequences. Hes going to explain to them the gravity of the situation. The first one, He speaks to is the serpent-Satan. He says these words…Now many people believe, many scholars believe, this is not just an issue between Adam and Eve and the serpent, but a foreshadowing of the conflict between good and evil, a foreshadowing of the conflict between the Redeemer-who will come to set things right-and Satan, a battle between lies and the truth. God says, I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers. Satans offspring. Who might Satans offspring be? What He is talking about is Satan deceived with a lie. All those who will believe the lie, who will believe the deception of the enemy, are from the enemy. They emanate from him in that sense. What did Jesus say to the Pharisee when they said, Well, God is our father, Jesus said, God is not your father. Youre of your father, who? Who? The devil. Because he was a liar from the beginning, and he is a father of lies. So, to buy into those lies, to succumb to those lies, in essence is he has reproduced himself into you. You have bought the lie. Theres going to be a struggle between the seed of the woman and the serpent. He identifies, now, in the third person, He will crush your head, and you will strike his heal. Any of you ever been killed by getting hit in the heel? Anybody here ever die from being hit in the heel? Nobodys dead from being hit in the heel? That was a joke. Anybody ever known anybody who died from being hit in the heel. I think if we could die from being hit in the heal, wed wear some bigger boots, wouldnt we? If you were hit in the heal, thats going to hurt, but its not going to kill you. But if your head is crushed, that will do it. That will do it. So He talks about this conflict for those who will believe the lies of the enemy and those who will follow the woman seed, and He says, Theres going to be an ultimate conflict, an ultimate climax, to the conflict between the lies and the truth. Whats going to happen is youre going to wound him, and he is going to crush you. Evil is going to be defeated. All the way from the very beginning, God had a plan of redemption that was going into effect. Jesus at the cross would be wounded, but through his resurrection, Satan will be crushed. Evil and sin and death will be crushed, and victory will be gained. Amen? Amen. The cross and the resurrection is the fulfillment of what God spoke of in Genesis 3:15. The serpent was crushed. The serpent was defeated. His lie was conquered by the truth. Does that mean he gives up? Does that mean he goes away? Not at all. His job now is to distort the truth, to discredit the message. His tool is still going to be the lie. Lets listen attentively to this conversation between some demonic entities as they discuss what theyre going to do now that Satan has been dealt this blow, now that hes been defeated. What is going to be Satans plan to conquer this truth with a lie? (Clip played.) What God is going to do in the Garden is begin a plan to take what Satan has made that is ugly and rotten, and He is going to begin a plan of salvation. Ive been doing some work in my house, some landscaping. Ive shared with you all the rocks Ive encountered and how difficult its been. Ive realized Rock County is called Rock County because of all the rocks that are buried in our soil. Ive also encountered a lot of lumber. I found out that the carpenters who built my home used to use my front lawn as burial for all their blocks of wood. Thats another thing Ive been running into as I dig. I ran into the mother of all blocks of wood. It seemed like everyplace I dug, there it was. I ended up having to dig a much bigger hole than Id hoped for because I had to get this big block of wood out. It was really annoying. In fact, I brought it with me today. Its an ugly rotting post. This rotten dirty rascal was a real headache for me, a real problem for me. I pulled it out of the soil, and I threw it off to the side. I said, Oh, Im glad I got that thing out of the way. I went and bought a tree. The tree weighed, they said, between two and three hundred pounds. So, my wife and I had a wonderful time getting that thing out of the trunk of the car. Then she had to leave, and I had to scoot the thing toward the hole. Id get down, and Id grab the wires, and Id tug to get it a few inches, take a break, regroup, and Id tug again. It took me quite a while to get it from the driveway to the place where it was supposed to go. I was trying to figure out how I was going to get it in the hole. I cant pick it up and put it in there, and Im afraid the thing is going to topple. If I could just have something that would help me to ease this tree into this hole, that would be good. Then, bing! Thats my sound effect for an idea. An idea hit me. Wheres that rotten piece of wood? Wheres my nemesis? Wheres my enemy? I went and found him. I said, Thats perfect! I took this wedge part, put it in the hole, rested this toward the top of the hole, and then took the tree and slid it down this post. It was slick; down to the hole it went. It was perfect. This block of wood that I saw as evil and bad, rotten and ugly, turned into something that was useful for me, something that was beneficial for me. The wonderful thing about the Gospel is Jesus does that for us. Jesus can take something from that very ground that brought this pain in the neck and make it became a source of good for me. Think about the cross for a moment. Think about the cross a moment. Think about the ugliness of the cross. Think about the fact that an innocent man whod done nothing but good-shared nothing but good-loved people. He told us what Heaven is like, shared what God is like, healed people, brought hope and life. How did we return that? We returned that by crucifying Him. We think about the cross; we think about death and suffering. Think of the evil that was present that day and how dark that day was, the tears that were shed by His mother, by His followers, by His disciples. It was a bad day; it was an evil day. Yet from that very ground, from that very awful thing, God brought the most wonderful thing he could ever bring. He brought forgiveness. He brought a restoration of what was lost in the Garden through mans fall. From something evil, He brought for us something good. God still does that. God will still do that in your life, church, if you will allow Him to. His Word says He takes what is evil, and He will use it for the good in your life. As we think about the cross, it really is significant from the viewpoint of whom is man because it tells us how valuable we are in Gods sight. I was doing a little search online to see what my car is worth. I have a tan 2001 Lincoln Town Car. I was going to sell it, so I wanted to know its worth. So, I searched it out, and it was up to $39,000. Thirty-nine thousand dollars! Why in the world is my car selling for $39,000? Wow! Its worth maybe $8,000-$9,000. I had to find out what was going on. So, I clicked on it, and sure enough, it was a 2001 Lincoln Town Car, same color, same series-signature series-exactly the same, only one catch: The car belonged to Warren Buffett, not Jimmy Buffett-not Margaritaville dude-but the second richest man in all the world. The car was talking about his thriftiness and how he doesnt have chauffeurs, and he doesnt drive around in limos. It said when Mr. Buffett wants to go to McDonalds, he drives his 2001 Lincoln Town Car. He drives it everywhere he goes. It said that if you win this car, two things would happen. One, all the money would go toward charity. Two, Mr. Buffett will put, will don, a chauffer cap, come to the airport, pick you up in person and take you to the car. Youll have a chance to meet him and sit down and talk with him. The car sold for $73,000! Seventy-three thousand dollars! So, Im figuring I can get $60,000 for mine, maybe (congregation laughing). Okay, ask $60,000, take $50,000. Why did it sell for so much money? Because of whom it belonged to. Whom it belonged to determined its worth and value. You are not the stuff of cosmic gas and stardust and ooze. You are the stuff of God. You are made in His image. The fact is you belong to Him, and because you belong to Him, you have incredible worth and value. That worth and value were further demonstrated not just by the fact that you are created in His image, but that He would send His son to suffer and die in your place. Something is worth the price that youre willing to pay for it. What was the price that God was willing to pay for you? It was the life of His Son. Would you bow in prayer as we prepare to receive communion this morning? Father, the Gospel is always, if anything, something that humbles us. Just as we look in creation and see its vastness and its glory and say, What is man? Whom am I? so we look at the cross, and we say, Whom am I that You would do this for me? I pray for those this morning who struggle with a low self-esteem, a low self-worth, who do not see themselves as valuable. Father, let them grasp this truth in their spirit, that they are far more valuable than they can ever imagine because they belong to-because theyve been created in-Your image. Father, might the lies of the world have a deaf ear turned toward them, might not only their ears but their eyes and their heart turn to Your truth and receive it into their souls. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
