Adrien Brody puts his nose to the grindstone as a detective out to stop a yellow-skinned, mad killer who is abducting females by way of his taxi in Dario Argento's Giallo from 2009, featuring Brody in a dual role and... Not much else according to at least three of us. We discuss the film's lack of signature Argento-isms, whether or not it is a giallo, Adrien Brody's court case against the producers, and much more! Also, the ghost of Skype has infiltrated our new recording digs, making completion of the episode about as difficult as sitting through this movie!

After a brief hiatus for Sundance we are back to get you caught up on this week's physical media. Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski look at a pair of enjoyable larks in the careers of John Woo and Jonathan Demme. There is the fun hangout movie that was just celebrated at the film festival where it had its premiere as well as one of the early Rolling Stones concert films. SXSW premiered one of the great twisted films about capitalistic depravity and Arrow does it justice here. There is also some twisted Dario Argento and a kid trying to hook up with Nicole Kidman. But this week is full of original films that were eventually remade including a western written by Elmore Leonard, the film which won William Hurt his Oscar, a Clark Gable film that he made twice, a dynamite thriller on a train, Charles Bronson as a cultured killer. Not but last least a classic rom-com that was remade that the guys have some very different opinions about.2:16 - Criterion (3:10 to Yuma (1957) (4K), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) (4K), House Party (4K), Birth (4K))31:44 - Warner Archive (Red Dust, The Narrow Margin)41:10 - Shout (Once a Thief (4K))51:14 - Vinegar Syndrome (Married to the Mob 4K, The Stendhal Syndrome 4K)1:09:33 - Arrow (Cheap Thrills)1:17:37 - Universal (Fifty Shades Trilogy 4K, Marry Me (4K))1:29:52 - Kino (Hold That Blonde, The Mechanic 4K, Sabrina (1995), The Hi-Lo Country, Let's Spend the Night Together 4K)2:09:35 – New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (Hung Up On a Dream: The Zombies, Blue Moon, The Thing with Feathers)2:11:41 – New Blu-ray Announcements!CLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTUSE COUPON “MOVIEMADNESS” TO GET 10% OFF ALL DUBBY PRODUCTSSIGN UP FOR AUDIBLEBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. This episode of 'Horror Joy' delves into Luca Guadagnino's 2018 reimagining of 'Suspiria.' Brian and Jeff explore the themes of academic horror, feminism, and political violence within the film's setting of post-war Berlin. We compare Guadagnino's version to Dario Argento's original 1977 film, discussing the significant differences, including the portrayal of witchcraft and the regulation of bodies in an academic setting. We highlight the film's complex power structures and touches on the role of music, dance, and cinematic techniques in creating horror. The discussion also questions Guadagnino's claim of making a feminist film, examining the intricate dynamics between the characters and the violent depiction of women's bodies. We find a blend of intellectual and emotional engagement in the film, despite their mixed feelings about some aspects. In this episode we take a trip to Italy for a look at Massimo Dellamano's 1972 giallo, What Have You Done To Solange? This Italian/German co-production was intended to capitalize on both the popularity of giallo in Italy and krimi in Germany, casting an array of English and German actors familiar to fans of krimi and Italian stars of the time for those who can't get enough giallo. A fairly grim entry into the canon, What Have You Done To Solange is a strong starting point for horror fans looking to go beyond the well-known giallo titles from Dario Argento and Mario Bava. We go over the history of giallo, the people who made it, and the economic conditions in Italy which led to its proliferation. In the story, Enrico Rosseni, a horn-dog gymnastics coach comes under suspicion in a series of brutal murders. The victims are all schoolgirls from his team and to make matters worse, his teenage girlfriend, witnessed one of the murders. He'll team up with the police and his severe German wife to crack the code and discover the real murderer, their motive, and learn the identity of the mysterious Solange, who seems to be at the center of all this. In this episode of Horror Joy, Brian and Jeff jump headlong into academic horror. Their firs stop is Dario Argento's 1977 class, Suspiria. We explore themes such as ritualized violence, paranoia, and the cult-like power dynamics of a coven of witches who both govern and are governed by the institution. We highlight the vivid colors, atmospheric elements, and unsettling soundtrack that is used to convey meaning and evoke fear. We delve into the use of witches not as symbols of feminist empowerment but as tools of misogyny, driven by the male gaze. Additionally, we consider the idea of suppressed queer and feminine elements in a drab world. We conclude with a look at the film's reliance on practical effects over CGI, setting a joyful yet terrifying tone.Kristeva, Julia. Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection. Translated by Leon S. This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast, Clay and Amanda are taking a trip into the strange, dreamlike world of Dario Argento's 1985 cult oddity Phenomena. It's one of Argento's most notorious films from his wildly experimental '80s era — full of surreal imagery, pulsing Goblin music, murder mysteries, and a young Jennifer Connelly wandering through the Swiss countryside. Clay and Amanda break down the film's off-the-wall tone, its place in Argento's career, and why Phenomena stands out even among the director's already very weird filmography. It's stylish, confusing, beautiful, and deeply unsettling in ways that only Argento could manage. Now, I should probably admit something up front: I haven't actually seen Phenomena. But I'm still excited! Why? Because I've been assured — by absolutely no one — that there are probably no bugs in it. And that's important to me. Bugs and I do not get along. Spiders? No. Beetles? Absolutely not. Anything with too many legs or a weird crunch? I'm out. Horror movies already ask a lot of me emotionally — I don't need ants crawling into my soul on top of it.So I'm going into this episode feeling optimistic. An Argento movie without bugs sounds great! Just some light murder, some eerie atmosphere, maybe a monkey with a razor (that's fine), but definitely no swarming insects, crawling larvae, or close-ups of mandibles clicking together. Clay and Amanda seem excited, which reassures me. They wouldn't do that to me, right? They know my boundaries. Surely.Anyway, if you're a fan of Italian horror, surreal storytelling, or films that operate entirely on nightmare logic, this episode is for you. I'll be listening too — cautiously, fingers crossed, telling myself everything is fine. And if at any point they mention insects, flies, maggots, or entomology in general? I will be screaming, throwing my headphones, and pretending this episode never happened. But until then, I'm happy. Ignorance is bliss. And do forget to head over to patreon.com/thepenskyfile to follow along this year as Clay and Amanda do a deep dive on sequels!

Director Kevin Lewis joins Nerdtropolis Mayor Sean Tajipour on Reel Insights to dive deep into Pig Hill, a chilling folklore-driven horror film inspired by local legend and psychological fear. Starring Shane West, Rainey Qualley, Shiloh Fernandez, and R.A. Mihailoff, the film follows a woman obsessed with the myth of the Pig People as disappearances begin to pile up.Lewis opens up about what first pulled him into the project, from the strength of the script to the way the story's third act completely flipped his expectations. He talks about the power of real folklore, how legends seep into the subconscious, and why stories like Pig Hill feel unsettling long after the credits roll. The conversation explores how Pig Hill differs from expectations shaped by Willy's Wonderland, leaning more into psychological horror and emotional tension rather than pure chaos. Lewis breaks down his creative mindset as a filmmaker, explaining how he always approaches his work as a fan first and why horror audiences are some of the most passionate and forgiving out there.Lewis also dives into the hands-on process behind the film's practical effects and creature design, working closely with legendary effects artist Jason Baker. He discusses the challenge of creating something iconic that feels timeless, while balancing cinematic realism with a dreamlike, giallo-inspired visual style influenced by filmmakers like David Lynch and Dario Argento. The discussion touches on walking the fine line between gore and suggestion, the importance of letting the audience's imagination do the work, and which scenes proved the most challenging to shoot under tight indie conditions. Lewis reflects on how limitations often push creativity and why trusting your gut can lead to some of the film's most memorable moments.Lewis also looks ahead, teasing several upcoming projects and sharing his excitement for continuing to make genre films for fans who love bold, weird, and unforgettable storytelling.Pig Hill is now available on VOD from Cineverse.Visit Nerdtropolis.comhttps://www.Facebook.com/nerdtropolishttps://Instagram.com/nerdtropolishttps://Twitter.com/nerdtropolis

This week, we step into the dance academy and compare two radically different nightmares: Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) and Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018). Same premise, same title — completely different approaches to horror. We break down how Argento's original became a technicolor fever dream of sound, style, and supernatural menace, while the 2018 remake transforms the story into a slow-burn exploration of trauma, power, and political horror. From neon lighting and Goblin's iconic score to muted palettes and oppressive dread, these films feel less like remake and original and more like alternate realities. Is one version definitively better, or do they succeed in entirely different ways? We discuss atmosphere, performances, themes, and why Suspiria remains one of the most fascinating examples of how horror can be reimagined without losing its soul. Oh my goodness, it's that time again to delve into the horror riddled mind of a musician that loves the genre and today that musician is the UK rock 'n' roll legend Ginger Wildheart. So strap on you black gloves, crack open a fresh J&B whisky and let's get down to the crack of a Lucio Fulci classic, The Beyond.
Today on the 5: As the final "Christmas Commentary" film for this week, we watched 1975's Deep Red, aka Profondo Rosso. I was sure I had reviewed this classic from Dario Argento before, but amazingly it doesn't seem that I had. Let's get that corrected right now!
Full on into NOGcember and we're talking two of the most Christmas filled horror films ever made, Deep Red and It's a Wonderful Knife. If there were any more Christmas in these films you'd have tinsel coming out of your nose by the end of the movies. Yes... Even on Deep Red, our very first Dario Argento film of the podcast. If you don't think it's very Christmasey that's a YOU problem. In this episode we will break down these two films and answer the age old question... Are Deep Red and It's a Wonderful Knife... What is it about the Italians? The rich food. Thousands of years of incredible art and sculpture and music. Something's in the blood over there that produces a high concentration of moviemakers with incredible lush styles: Sergio Leone, Federico Fellini, Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava, and Dario Argento to name just a few. This week, Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill riffs on what it means to be a "stylist". And why Italian masters like Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica don't quite feel like part of that category because other traits of their moviemaking dominate. Craig also tries explores why, even if your aesthetic is different, studying stylists is key to the craft.
Non è solo attraverso l'opera di Dario Argento, il regista horror più famoso, che l'Italia ha contribuito alla costruzione di questo genere cinematografico. In South Australia verranno proiettati tre lungometraggi di Lucio Fulci che fecero scuola.
At long last, Sean follows the clues that lead to Dario Argento's maiden effort, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), the film that single-handedly kicked off a cottage industry of stylish giallo thrillers in Italy. An American writer witnesses a brutal attack, and then tries to solve the case while the killer zeroes in on him. Listen as we talk cat dinner delicacies, what happens when artwork attacks, and captive audiences to murder on this week's exciting episode! Hosted on Acast. This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we are diving into the twisted world of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations filtered through the lens of Italian horror masters! We're comparing two distinctly different takes on Poe's works, both featuring the iconic killer feline: the atmospheric Giallo-tinged film The Black Cat (1981) from Lucio Fulci, and he anthology film Two Evil Eyes (1990), directed by Dario Argento and George A. Romero. The Black Cat (1981) Directed by the "Godfather of Gore," Lucio Fulci, this film is a loose, Gothic interpretation of Poe's famous short story. Set in a small English village, a psychic professor (Patrick Magee) with a penchant for recording the voices of the dead seems to share a malevolent connection with his black cat. As a series of gruesome, seemingly unrelated deaths plague the community, an American photographer (Mimsy Farmer) and a detective (David Warbeck) race to determine if the feline is truly a supernatural killer, or merely a vessel for the professor's madness. The film is known for its moody atmosphere and surreal Fulci-esque touches. Two Evil Eyes (1990) This anthology film is a collaborative effort between two horror giants, George A. Romero and Dario Argento, with each directing a story based on Poe. Romero's Segment ("The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"): This segment stars Adrienne Barbeau and E.G. Marshall and focuses on a dying, wealthy man who is hypnotized just before death so his consciousness can be preserved. However, the plan goes horribly wrong when his spirit remains trapped between worlds, leading to a chilling reanimation and the terrifying consequences of cheating death. Argento's Segment ("The Black Cat"): Starring Harvey Keitel, this segment is a stylized adaptation of "The Black Cat." Keitel plays a crime scene photographer who descends into madness and violence after he resents and tortures his girlfriend's pet feline. Argento uses hyper-stylized gore and nightmarish visuals to explore themes of perversity and artistic decay. Join us as we dissect these two distinct adaptations. Tune in for a double dose of Poe and Italian horror masters! Spoilers start around 7:30-ish.
Our "Witch Images" series returns as we further explore the music videos of Ghost. Today, we take a look at Cirice directed by Roboshobo. Giving off the vibes of a low-budget 70's cult film, it depicts a school talent show where a band of kids in masks and makeup peform the song as the singer (dressed as Papa) bonds with a girl in the front row who reveals her psychic powers on an audience of unsuspecting parents. The Dario Argento and Carrie inspiration is strong in this classic video. E perché i suoi film continuano a farci paura e incantarci, mezzo secolo dopo? Ne parliamo insieme a Laura Scaramozzino, editor, coach letteraria, nonché autrice premiata di novelle e romanzi noir. Suspiria is one of the most beautiful and unsettling horror films ever made. Dario Argento's 1977 masterpiece drenches witchcraft in light and color, turning a simple story about a dance academy into a surreal nightmare of sound, architecture, and occult energy. In this episode, MonteCristo, Thorin, and Richard Lewis close out Four Play's Occult Horror Arc by examining how Suspiria reshaped the language of horror cinema. From Goblin's legendary score to Argento's impossible lighting, they explore why this film's dreamlike atmosphere endures nearly fifty years later and whether its magic still holds up in 2025. They also discuss the legacy of Italian auteur Dario Argento, the power of color as horror, and how Suspiria's female hierarchy and dream logic differ from modern horror storytelling. Finally, the hosts announce their next series: the Robert Redford Arc, celebrating the career of one of cinema's most charismatic and influential figures. We close out our Halloween Hootenanny series of all Bring Me The Axe episodes all October with an episode dedicated to a listener who really made our year. This year's series caps off with a look at the gloriously frantic, unfocused shit show that is Dario Argento's Phenomena. Falling very early in the acting career of American movie star, Jennifer Connelly, it's kind of amazing that she finished this production and continued to act given that her finger was literally separated from her body thanks to an angry monkey that also actually slashed up the face of Argento's soon-to-be ex-wife, Daria Nicolodi. You have Donald Pleasance putting on a clinic for phoning it in and yet the entire movie manages to be charming and extremely enjoyable, one of Argento's most Freudian movies, for good or for bad. When Jennifer, the daughter of an American movie star is shipped off to a Swiss school for girls she lands there at the worst possible time as a murderer is on the loose killing young women. Lucky for her, she has the incredible power to speak to and command insects and she uses this marvelous ability to crack the case since the cops are doing fuck-all to solve it, themselves. Along the way she teams up with a wheelchair-bound entomologist and his helper monkey to get to the bottom of things.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
