The Design Brief is back and this time I'm chatting with another member of The Society of Australian Golf Course Architects, Ryan Van Der Veen.Ryan joins me to chat about his career, beginning with his time in golf course construction from a young age back in the USA where he was born. After getting his start using heavy machinery on weekends and school holidays, it was during his time studying at Purdue University where Ryan was given an opportunity to work with the late great Pete Dye with the reconstruction of their golf courses. From this early association with Pete Dye, Ryan was offered an opportunity to work at a golf course Pete Dye was building that in time would become the revered Whistling Straits Golf Course!Along with working with Pete Dye, Ryan spent a number years working as part of Greg Norman Golf Course Design team outside the USA including constructing the spectacular new Doonbeg in Ireland. It would soon turn that Ryan was asked to work in Australia with the Norman design team at a new golf course being constructed outside Adelaide in South Australia, when things soon changed thanks to the GFC! Ryan worked on a few other projects leading the Norman design and build team at some of our well known golf courses including Grange in Adelaide and Cathedral Lodge in Victoria, before life would soon see Ryan stay here in Australia and start his own golf course design business - Van Der Veen Designs.Join us for a great yarn hearing some wonderful stories from Ryan of building and now designing some great golf courses. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Ryan Van Der Veen - FacebookRyan Van Der Veen - SAGCA Profilesagca.com.auPete Dye - WikipediaPalmira Golf ClubPurdue University Golf ClubWhistling Straits Golf CourseBlackwolf RunBarefoot Golf & ResortTrump International Golf Links - Doonbeg CopperClub The Dunes - Port HughesThe Grange Golf ClubEastern Golf ClubCathedral Lodge & Golf Club - Greg Norman Golf Course DesignNew South Wales Golf ClubThe Huntley Development - Landscape ConceptGlenelg Golf ClubDye Designs GroupGreg Norman Golf Course DesignLove Golf DesignFazio Design

Rob Collins and King Collins Dormer are fast becoming well known throughout the United States of America, thanks in part to their design of cult hero golf course at Sweetens Cove Golf Club in Tennessee, and their big, bold, home run hitting design of the golf course at Landmand Golf Club in Nebraska, both under the former guise as King Collins. Apart from these special two designs, a number of other new golf course designs coming soon in the USA, and the addition of Trevor Dormer, thus becoming King Collins Dormer, they have something very new on their horizon. Their first new 18 hole course design outside the USA. And it will be at one of Australia's most talked about golf course destinations, 7 Mile Beach! Yes, with the 1st 18 hole course designed by Clayton DeVries Pont (CDP) soon to be open for play, King Collins Dormer are champing at the bit and ready to begin the design and construction of their addition, to not only this incredible golf site, but the Australian golf landscape!Recorded during US Masters week, Rob Collins and I discuss his background to give the wider Australian audience a better understanding of just who both he and King Collins Dormer are. Oh yeah, and as it turns out, there's the uncanny prophetic skills of Rob picking the Masters winner after just 1 round! Rob takes us through his career in golf course design and we ride the wave of emotions that he has experienced to get to where he is today beginning with his first golf course baby - Sweetens Cove. From Sweetens to Landmand, and the small public 9 hole golf course redesign of Overton Park in the middle, would prove significant to the public's understanding of what the formerly known King Collins design team was capable of. Their fun, engaging, interesting and considerably entertaining designs had them standing out of the crowd. Enter the not yet open, 7 Mile Beach golf complex, the vision of Australian professional golfer and now golf course developer Mat Goggin, and the world has the ingredients for something truly sensational. For all the fans out there of Australian golf courses and Rob Collins, this is one conversation you don't want to miss out on. Join me for some fun and insight with Rob as I get my fan-girling on and he butters us up to get even more excited about 7 Mile Beach in Hobart, Tasmania! You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubePeople and places mentioned in this podcast:King Collins Dormer7 Mile BeachSweetens Cove Golf ClubLandmand Golf ClubOverton Park Golf CourseBounty Club21 Golf ClubSand Hills Golf Club - WikiPinehurst No.2St Andrews Links - The Old CourseRoyal Dornoch Golf ClubThe Royal Country Down Golf ClubEP.84 - The Board Room: Mat Goggin (7 Mile Beach) - AppleEP.84 - The Board Room: Mat Goggin (7 Mile Beach) - Spotify

Thanks to The Society of Australian Golf Course Architects, The Design Brief is back! Richard Chamberlain may not be a household name in Australian golf course architecture. As you'll soon hear, Richard is however extremely well experienced and has worked with some of those household golf course architecture names. From an early career in cartography Richard was soon to make a change into golf course architecture, probably in a way you won't see coming. Once in the game, with a couple of Australia's well known names such as Graham Marsh and Ross Watson, Richard was soon finding his was in the earliest days of CAD for golf course design and construction. Fast forward through some rewarding, and at times, tumultuous years, Richard is now well into his very own career as a golf course architect. As you'll hear, he is working on a number of golf course projects around Australia. One corner of his business that he has carved out in the industry himself, is that of mini golf course design. Different to the image that you conjure in your mind at the moment you first hear about mini golf, golf clubs and other golf facilities are seeing enormous benefits to adding mini golf to their established golf offerings. Join Richard and I as we theoretically travel the country discussing old golf course design and construction, new golf course design and construction, mini golf, short par 4's, and the odd beer story all in the name of learning more and gaining an insight into the mind of a golf course architect. Let's be real: your designers are NOT mind readers. So, if you want designs that look good AND convert, you need a solid playbook.  What's your goal? What's the project about? What do you want it to look like? Who even ARE you? These are the questions your brief has to answer, plus more about your intended audience and where you'll be placing things.  And, you need to define success. Throw those vanity metrics out the window—be upfront about what you really want to accomplish.  Plus, you have to be realistic about timing. How long does it take to make something and reformat it based on the platform? Is it relevant to what's happening in pop culture and/or your audience? Think FCA: fast, clear, actionable. You might think of real estate agents only for buying and selling property, but did you know that they have a heap of knowledge that can add value to your next renovation or new home project? In the previous episodes, I covered the cost of house construction to help you understand what your design ideas or your house plans might cost. In today's episode, we move on to the next step in the renovate or sell journey - property value and feasibility. You'll find out how a good real estate agent can help you answer your design brief and budget questions, and add real value to your home.I talk to experienced real estate agent Tim Douglas from Place West Estate Agents in Paddington, Brisbane.INTERVIEW QUESTIONS00:00 Introduction01:17 Do many renovators ask you for advice on their design brief and budget?05:48 What information can real estate agents provide regarding brief or budget?07:53 If someone is thinking of selling, should they talk to a real estate agent before they do any improvements?11:46 What are the most common features that make a house not worth renovating?16:59 For people putting together a design brief, what are the things that potential buyers always look for?20:33 Do swimming pools add value and are people looking for them?23:20 What is your advice on baths?26:02 Do very personal or unusual design features make a house difficult to sell?30:45 If you create a smaller home than others in the area, will it cause a problem when it comes to resale?37:25 When is the best time to approach a real estate agent to get advice?43:05 What are the typical relocation costs?46:33 What design information should people bring when meeting with a real estate agent?47:59 Key Points SummaryKEY POINTS SUMMARYThese are the key points from this episode:1. Firstly, if you've got design brief or budget questions, it's always worth talking to a few experienced local real estate agents to get their opinion, particularly if you're considering selling in under five years. Agents talk to buyers on a daily basis so they're in a unique position to provide information on features that add value and those that don't, as well as what buyers are prepared to pay for them. At the end of the day, it's your house, so you can do what you want. You don't have to follow the agent's advice, but I always think it's worth getting informed before you start spending any money, so there's no regrets later on.2. Secondly, it was interesting to find out the features of a house that add value in 2024. These vary depending on your location, but the most popular were: a second living area,an ensuite and walk in robe off the main bedroom,a mudroom for dumping clothes and shoes and bags, etc, on the way in from the car, and interestingly,a pool.3. The third point was that it's preferable to get advice from an agent as early in the design process as possible. This will ensure you've got clear direction forward on your design brief and most importantly, your budget, to avoid over capitalisation. Agents can provide advice on rough floor plans or even simply a discussion of your design ideas.IN THE NEXT EPISODENext week, you'll find out what's happening in the real estate market in Brisbane, south east Queensland and all around Australia in 2024, and what's forecast to happen into 2025.I'll be talking again to Tim Douglas from Place West Estate Agents in Paddington, Brisbane.RESOURCE LINKSTim Douglas, Place West Estate Agents,

Hello! This is Episode 308, and in it, I want to discuss a Design Risk I see that creates problems for you from the get-go, in terms of how your project begins, and then the way that the design process progresses overall. This is a DESIGN RISK that can mean you waste time and money in any design process. At its worst, it can mean you end up with the wrong home - a home that doesn't suit you, your site, your budget or your lifestyle. [For all resources mentioned in this podcast and a free, downloadable PDF transcript, head to www.undercoverarchitect.com/308] As a reminder: DESIGN is one of my five factors that I believe threads through every decision and step in your project journey. The other four are COST, TIME, TEAM and YOU. It's understandable to be super excited and want to dive into the design process, and get things going asap. Often, by the time you've selected your preferred design professional or company to work with, you've been thinking about your project, and imagining your future home, for a LONG time.  But, if you don't take the time to create an effective design brief before you begin, you can waste a lot of time, money and effort in your design process.  And you can miss huge opportunities and benefits in the design process and the outcome in your future home that come from thinking about yourself, your lifestyle and what you need to best support it. So, let's talk about the DESIGN RISK of not creating a thorough, personal and effective design brief, so you can get this right before you begin any design work on your future home. Back to back segments of The Design Brief sees me this time catch up with The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast resident Golf Course Architect Harley Kruse from Kruse Golf. I wanted to get an update of the work Harley has been up to and also some new projects he's soon to be working on. The main point of this conversation however was to discuss working with golf courses on relatively small parcels of land. We discuss some of the challenges architects and clubs face when going through a redesign process on a small site and what things have to be considered. I also wanted to get Harley's thoughts on the question of are golf courses becoming too fast? I believe things are starting to get a bit out of control generally across the spectrum and does this have an effect on the thoughts of an architect. I hope you enjoy this more philosophical conversation with Harley and it gets you considering your thoughts as well. You hit 'em clean, we'll keep 'em green! In Episode #5, Daniel Burstein, Senior Director of Content & Marketing, MarketingSherpa, interviewed  Jonathan Fashbaugh, President, Pro Impressions Marketing (https://www.proimpressionsgroup.com/).Some lessons from Fashbaugh that emerged in the discussion:Popular content isn't always the best content for the client. His team blogged on a dentist's website about the vampire fang effect that was used in the TV show “True Blood.” The post explained how people could get porcelain veneers that looked like fangs…only problems was, the dentist did not offer that service. Well-written content put together by someone who understands the business can go a very long way toward the client's success. Fashbaugh went to seminars with a dentist, shared a hotel with him, and was his hands-on patient for the courses they attended together. He used this course as experience to help inform the website he was building for the dentist. Attention to detail in a niche pays dividends. Dentists have taught Fashbaugh to be very picky. There was a stock photo floating around that many design companies were using. But if you looked closely, the model was missing one of her teeth toward the back of her mouth. Fashbaugh also shared lessons he learned from the people he collaborated with in his career:Robin Schmachtenberger, Owner, idolum – Don't go around your supervisor, and you don't throw your weight around as the new person.  Bill Fukui, Senior Director of Business Development, MedShark Digital – Always get the client or prospect on the phone before you give up the goods.  Jeff Haddad, Owner and Dentist, Rochester Advanced Dentistry – Communicating with consumers in their language. Articles (and a course) mentioned in this episode:Become a Marketer-Philosopher: Create and optimize high-converting webpages (https://meclabs.com/course/)– free digital marketing course from MECLABS Institute, MarketingSherpa's parent organizationBanner Blindness: Why your marketing messages are hiding in plain sight (https://marketingexperiments.com/digital-advertising/banner-blindness-messages-hiding)Ask MarketingSherpa: Copywriting for non-native English speakers (https://sherpablog.marketingsherpa.com/copywriting/non-native-english-speakers/)Quick Win Intensive (https://meclabs.com/QuickWinIntensive) – from MECLABSValue Proposition Workshop (https://meclabs.com/services/value-proposition) – from MECLABSMarketing 101: What is a Design Brief? What would you say is one of the most daunting design challenges of our time? I hope our climate crisis at least crossed your mind. As Cat Drew argues, we as a service design community play a key role in helping to solve this crisis. Cat is the Chief Design Officer at the UK Design Council and currently championing the Design for Planet initiative. In this week's episode of the Show we talk about the opportunities designing with the planet in mind brings to organizations. And how the organizations which keep on ignoring their responsibility will be left behind. Cat shares a lot of encouraging examples of services where planet was part of the design brief. But no matter how hard you want to use design to shape a better world... If the client who is hiring you doesn't care, it's going to be a very hard task. So you need to encourage and inspire your clients to make the planet part of the design brief. It's not easy, but there are some great resources that help you do this and you'll learn about them in this episode. As a service design community we need to lead by example. Designing with the plant in mind is not a choice. It's a responsibility. This is episode #196, and in it, I’m going to share with you how to create a comprehensive and effective design brief for your renovation or building project. This is something EVERYONE needs to do - whether they’re renovating or building new - and so, it’s worthwhile learning what to include, and the kinds of things to think about, plus specific topics to discuss with anyone else you’re doing your project with. And good news: you can grab a full transcript of this podcast episode as a PDF download by heading to www.undercoverarchitect.com/196 so be sure to do that, and use it as a guide for creating your design brief. So, let’s dive straight in! SHOW NOTES: If you’re struggling with understanding the overall steps for your project, what you should be focussing on and when, or how to best invest your efforts, energy and money to get a great outcome in your future home, I’ve created something super helpful for you. Access my free online workshop “Your Project Plan” now >>> https://undercoverarchitect.com/projectplan This free workshop will really help you understand the best steps to take wherever you’re at in your project, and how you can avoid some serious and expensive mistakes.  Plus, I’ll share with you what to focus on and when, so you know you’re getting everything in order for a successful project and beautiful home. And you’ll get access to some great bonuses as well. Your design brief is a really critical part of planning your renovation or building project. And creating one can be a misunderstood process. I’ve seen such a range of how these get done, and how homeowners create them.  And I’ve also seen big challenges because designers don’t always do a good job of extracting the right information from a homeowner before they start their project. This means they can miss things and waste time in the design process, because the design brief wasn’t established properly upfront. I’ll talk more about this and other mistakes that get made with design briefs as we move through this episode. This is the thing: it’s not only that creating a design brief is a necessary step in your project. It’s also that the actual exercise of creating one, is an important process for you to go through in your project planning.  Creating a design brief forces you to think about, and write down, specific things that will make your project goals more clear, and then enable you to communicate the most important parts of your project with others.  And this will set you up for success as you navigate choosing your team, moving through the design phase, and being sure your design is actually delivering on the things you want in your future home. Creating a design brief is something I get a lot of questions about, so I thought I’d use this episode to take you through the things to ponder for your project, so you can get started on creating your own design brief. "What are your goals as a graphic designer?" is one of those questions. Without a doubt, 60% - 75% of people coming into the group say, "I want to start freelancing". They have been working in an agency job, they are just finishing up college, or they have picked up a few clients and they want to make freelancing their full-time thing! I then go on to ask them if they have a niche or focus that they want to promote and double down on to start their graphic design business. Next, I ask them if they have a solid/organized business structure for their freelance business. I am not talking about an LLC, a sole proprietorship, or some killer tax structure. I am specifically talking about the bones of their business. Having a good project management system, knowing how to make contracts and agreements, or having an automated email system. Most of the time when I ask these questions people say, "No, I don't". It was very interesting to me because this is something I had been working on for the past 5+ years was developing a system for my business. Many people have terrible relationships (communication wise) with their clients. It wastes a lot of time and money. So why do they continue to live in the waste of time? This week we address what it's like to bring another person's idea to life. 1:40 We’re off to a rocky start. Feeling a bit loopy. 2:20 Brandi’s favorite color is red and sea green. She doesn’t like to wear red, but she loves the color. 3:27 Is black a color? It depends on if you’re talking about light or pigment. If you’re talking about light, Black is the absence of colors. If you’re talking about pigment, it is all of the colors. 4:40 Michelle tells a story about the cashier woman at Subway being unsure about the hat she was wearing. 6:00 Today we will be talking about bringing a clients idea to fruition. 7:00 Everything relates to process. 7:06 Brandi teaches design thinking and creative concepts at the local art university. She asks students to write down their process. 7:40 How do you start your design, and what do you do between the start and final product. It’s eye opening to figure out your process. 8:00 Brandi has simplified her process into a 7 Step Design Process. 8:13 Today we will be touching on the 3 most important aspects of her process. 8:36 Step 1: The Design Brief. 9:56 The creative brief gives the designer a better scope of the possible client's design. Then she can give the client a quote. 10:25 Price sheets or flat rate? It depends on the designer. Brandi does not have a flat rate. 10:52 Sean Wes talks about value-based pricing. What is this? You don't base your price on how long it takes you and how much you are an hour. Rather, you charge them by how valuable the design is to somebody. If a company is going to make money off a design, then the designer deserves some of that and should charge accordingly. 11:24 The brief goes into everything she needs to know: who are you? how long have you been in business? who’s your ideal client? This gives her an idea who she’s designing for and who she’s trying to attract. 12:03 The brief also weeds out the people who are “just looking”. 12:42 Some people charge for a proposal, some people don’t. 12:56 Step 2: Brainstorming/mind mapping. 13:22 “Use Words First” A design is communication. Communication is words. With design, you communicate with visual AND words, so it only makes sense that your whole process starts with words. 13:42 If she’s designing a poster for a theatre, for example, The Little Mermaid, She mind maps The Little Mermaid. When she’s done she circles key words that will then become the concept. 14:11 Step 3: Sketching. Sketch out all of the ideas that relate back to the words you chose in the mind map. 14:26 This process is a fool proof way to get stuff done. It doesn’t matter if you’re feeling creative or not. If you’re on a deadline, you have to do it, and this helps. 15:22 To come up with a concept all you need is a pen, paper, and a thesaurus. Check out this app: Power Thesaurus 17:57 *NSYNC is better than BSB, but whatever. 18:46 Music is what brings us together. (So deep.) 19:17 Since we’re talking about how to get someone else’s idea onto paper, we thought it only appropriate to play a cover song. Check out Sleeping at Last’s Covers albums. They’re amazing and beautiful and perfect. Today’s song: As Long As You Love Me (Originally by The Backstreet Boys) 19:58 Ryan O'Neal of Sleeping at Last takes someone else vision and lyrics, and visualizes through his own eyes & ears. He brings his style to it. 20:17 Designers have a style, and the same goes for other creatives. Sleeping at Last has a distinct sound and it’s easy (and fun) to pick out his music. 22:32 Check out Vesperteen - Thanks to him for letting us use his song, Shatter in The Night, for our lil’ show. 23:03 Do you have any questions regarding process? Questions about anything we talked about? Are you going to formulate a process now that you know (or were reminded) that it’s important? Do you even care? 23:46 Find us at www.brandisea.com @brandisea on Instagram & Twitter.

Logo Design for your business is critical. It is the face and the first thing people see when they encounter your brand. When it comes to getting a logo designed for your company there are a few ways you can go about it. You can design the logo yourself if you are a decent artist and proficient with design software such as Adobe Illustrator. You can go the inexpensive route and go to a site such as Fiverr to have a freelance artist design one for you. You can go the more professional route which I recommend and run a competition on 99 Designs for different graphic designers to compete for your business. Create a logo that clearly illustrates what your company stands for or does, and stands out visually when looked at. There are many different things you need to take into account when choosing a logo design. It should be clean and functional, you need to be able to look at it and tell what the business is about, and you need to think about your target audience.   For all of my online ventures, I have chosen 99 designs. They allow you to run a competition and have hundreds of designers compete for a chance to design your logo. After a set amount of time, the competition ends and depending on the type of package you choose and you can select the designs you like best to go to the final round. Once you have decided which design you like best you can communicate this with the designer and he will hand over all of the necessary files. The Right Way to Launch a Contest Head over to 99Designs and Sign Up for an account Once you’ve signed up for an account, start a new “Logo Design” contest and fill out the Design Brief. Make sure you provide as much information as you can because the more you can convey what you want to the designers the better Using and Protecting Your Logo After you have decided on a logo design that fits your company’s mission at a glance, be sure to trademark it to protect it from use by other companies. You can apply for a trademark at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website.

Riggs' book Terminal Magic. Both look like promising reads and are still funding. Why don't you do yourself a favour and pre-order a copy of each. Finally, the media noise for the Sword & Laser Collection contest: the Sequel along with J-F's book, The Life Engineered are ramping up.
