In today's podcast we go Stateside to catch up on what is happening in the US as the global super power prepares for the latest iteration of the Donald Trump Presidency and as Los Angeles struggles to contain and recover from catastrophic wild fires. My guest today is Steve Burrows, ICE Representative for the West Coast of the USA. Steve is based in San Francisco and, after a global career in engineering working for Arup, then Aecom and WSP on projects including the Birdsnest Olympic Stadium in Beijing and Apple's headquarters in California, is now an independent consultant helping infrastructure clients to deliver better outcomes from their investments. So after 40 years in the region, If anyone has his finger on the West Coast pulse it's Steve!Well the Trump presidency is certainly a massive moment for the US and a massive moment for the rest of the world – huge consequences geopolitically and huge impacts economically if Trump follows through on his election promises. And huge impacts for infrastructure professionals as the administration switches track from renewables and net zero ambition back to the drill baby drill oil and gas centric policies of the past.Meanwhile of course the very real impact of global climate change has arrived in Los Angeles which is still battling what is certainly one of the worst natural disasters to have hit the city in its history. So far 25 people have been killed with many more still missing and tens of thousands of properties destroyed as fires rage across the parched dry tinder box driven my unprecedented high winds. It is truly a scene of tragedy on a massive scale. From an infrastructure perspective both events raise huge questions for the US – not least in a country that has massively underfunded and under maintained is infrastructure assets and that had world leading ambitions for low carbon development..So make no mistake there are big challenge ahead as professionals attempt to steer the path toward safe, productive and resilient infrastructure. So how are they coping. Key Takeaways:Tariffs could significantly impact commercial real estate by increasing construction costs, reducing consumer spending, and putting pressure on commercial real estate values.Deregulation could benefit commercial real estate by reducing barriers for businesses, inspiring business confidence, and potentially streamlining processes like permitting and zoning.Immigration policies under Trump could exacerbate labor shortages in the construction industry if there are mass deportations or tightened immigration. In a high inflation environment, affordable and flexible spaces like contractor garages and micro-spaces may be viable options for tenants. The impact of Trump's policies on commercial real estate will depend on the specifics and how they are implemented, as well as the broader economic context.Owning hard assets like real estate may be a good hedge against inflation, but the overall investment strategy should consider the nuances of the economic and policy changes.

The meat sector is bracing for the impact of a Donald Trump presidency. The President-Elect has campaigned on tariffs of up to 20% on all imports, with higher tariffs for imports from China. The US is our largest market for red meat. Meat Industry Association Chair Nathan Guy told Ryan Bridge the tariff plan will hit the sector pretty hard. He says it will hit US consumers even harder as they'll have to pay more for the red meat and burger patties we produce. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this edition of of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, British reporter and book critic Samuel McIlhagga joins to dissect Anne Applebaum's latest work, Autocracy Inc., and his critique of it in his Jacobin article, "Anne Applebaum's Dystopia of Rules." Together, they explore Applebaum's analysis of rising authoritarianism, her framing of the battle between democracy and autocracy, and how her perspective may overlook key complexities. McIlhagga challenges Applebaum's conclusions while agreeing with some parts of her general analysis, offering a deeper critique of the political narrative she builds, particularly in the context of global politics today. Amongst the topics we cover are NATO, multipolarity and the concept of the multipolar world, France's Emmanuel Macron and European intellectuals/political figures preparing for a world where Europe won't be able to rely on the U.S. (especially in the case of a 2nd Donald Trump Presidency in the White House), autocratic states that are U.S. allies vs. autocratics states that are U.S. enemies, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Latin America, the post-WWII order, geopolitical tensions, thinkers adjacent to Applebaum like Timothy Snyder, the Middle East, Israel/Palestine, Russia, Ukraine, and much, much more.

On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Anne Nelson, author of Shadow Network: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right, returns to the show to discuss her piece in The Washington Spectator entitled "Project 2025: The Latest Plot Against America". Nelson gives rundown of what conservative think-tank The Heritage Foundation's 900-page document "Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise" is all about and what Project 2025 entails for worker's rights, LGBTQ+ people, the economy, food safety, the environment, and more if it is implemented during a second Donald Trump Presidency, in full or part. We'll also discuss Nelson's research into the umbrella network of the American right-wing known as the Council for National Policy, a secretive organization that brings together right-wing billionaires, conservative Catholic, evangelical Christian nationalists, and other elements of American right-wing into a formidable network. The CNP was at the heart of her previously mentioned book Shadow Network and offers a glimpse into the American right-wing's machinations and maneuverings since its founding by conservative activist Paul Weyrich and Left Behind author Tim Lahaye in the era of the Ronald Reagan Presidency. We'll also manage to briefly discuss Catholic right-wing movements like the Opus Day and their relationship to the Supreme Court. All that and much more on this edition of Parallax Views!

Opening Monologues. Why isn't Biden polling in single-digits by now? We speculate on what's keeping America's Worst President barely afloat, as the disasters keep rolling in via Biden's foreign and domestic policies. Meanwhile, WSJ reports Trump has more than doubled his polling support with black men. NYT polling shows Americans have a far more favorable view of the Donald Trump Presidency than they do Joe Biden's. Has the MSM been overcome by the masses? Eric and Eliot inaugurate the first video episode of Shield of the Republic by welcoming former Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) to discuss her New York Times best-selling book Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning (New York: Little, Brown, 2023). They discuss her assessment of the impact on public discourse and public perceptions of the hearings and final report of the Congressional committee to investigate the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol. They discuss the domestic and international consequences of a potential second Donald Trump Presidency, particularly its impact on the ability of the US to exercise international leadership in a world beset by aggressive, authoritarian regimes in Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. They talk about the intellectual corruption on display at CPAC where would-be dictators were welcomed and the prospective end of democracy in America was cheered by the participants. Finally they consider the future of conservative internationalism and the Republican Party and whether or not the GOP is salvageable or whether a new conservative party needs to arise. A special episode of The Place of Sound podcast featuring highlights from a project I did in 2017 for Bivouac Recordings, in Hong Kong, called 60 minutes Cities Ottawa, a series of winter time field recordings of Ottawa.Note: This episode is also available in French. This is a special episode of The Place of Sound podcast. You'll hear highlights from a project I did in 2017 for Bivouac Recordings, a sound label based in Hong Kong, called 60 minutes Cities Ottawa - featuring winter sounds in Ottawa - curated by Terrence Lloren, which is a series of albums focused on an individual's genius loci or the ‘spirit of a place'.Each 60-minute cities album is a personal document of the recordists (re)discovery of their ‘city' through sound. Welcome to a special episode of The Place of Sound, a radio show/podcast produced in Carleton University's Communication and Media Studies Program by Dr. Vincent Andrisani and airing on CKCU FM, campus radio. The Place of Sound explores the idea of ‘place' through the ears of students and sometimes, guest producers, like me. Check it out. I'm speaking to you from Ottawa, which is on the unceded and un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin-Anishinaabe nations, who are the customary keepers and defenders of the Ottawa River Watershed and its tributaries. What you'll hear today are highlights from a project I did for Bivouac Recordings a sound label based in Hong Kong. In 2017 I produced 60 minutes Cities Ottawa as part of Bivouac's 60-minute cities project, curated by Terrence Lloren, which are a series of albums focused on an individual's genius loci or the ‘spirit of a place', which is closely related to the objectives of this podcast. Each 60-minute cities album is a personal document of the recordists (re)discovery of their ‘city' through sound. The 60 minutes of recordings are taken from the recordist's own personal surroundings and include photos and text to describe the significance of these sounds to their own lives. The result is a document that reveals the deepest character of a place through a native resident's own experience so that (locals) and non-locals, as well as the recordist, can (re)connect with the city and (re)discover the beauty of their place. But first, who am I? Qui. Suis-je? Until September 2020 my day job was as a senior strategic arts advisor at the Canada Council for the Arts but then I decided to focus on the climate emergency and co-founded an art and climate organization called SCALE, the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency, that I encourage you to check out. In 2020 I also started up a bilingual podcast called the conscient podcast, balado conscient en français, exploring art and the ecological crisis. I'm just completing season 4 now exploring the sounds of modernity which will take me to episode 153 on December 31, 2023. I invite you to check it out at conscient.ca. You'll find various subscription options, including a monthly blog where I share my learnings and more importantly my unlearnings and so on.However, today, I'm taking a break from the darker side of podcasting and invite you to listen to some soundscapes with me from Ottawa where I was born in 1959 and where my wife Sabrina and two children have lived since 1999. (fade in Remembrance Day recording)Let's pause for a minute of silence. This recording is called Commemoration and was recorded on November 11, 2016 at 10.58am at the National War Memorial on Elgin Street a few steps away from Parliament Hill. This is Remembrance Day, our national day to remember those who died in military service. (running sounds in Ottawa)Will you join me for a run? This sequence was recorded on New year day, 2017 at 11.28 am. Back then I was a marathon runner, so this sequence is me running at a good pace through Ottawa. Can you hear the slush? I love Ottawa in the wintertime. (Outdoor protests) There's always a lot going on and it being our capital city there are often protests, such as this one recorded on January 21, 2017 at 11am at the corner of Elgin and Gloucester street. On this day, all around the world, women (and some men) marched in solidarity with The Women's March on Washington: a grassroots effort to protest the Donald Trump Presidency, one day after his inauguration) and to stand together in solidarity and to recognize that vibrant and diverse communities are a strength. The sound of a public march has always been moving to me: inspirational chants, solidarity slogans, cries of anger, echoes of hope. In this Ottawa women's march, you hear the slogans ‘no limits for women', ‘the people united will never be divided' and ‘tiny hands, tiny feet, all Trump does is tweet-tweet-tweet'. Hopefully we won't have to protest again on January 21st, 2025.(Ottawa River)Now let's move now to the mighty Ottawa River or the Kichisìpi as it is known in the Algonquin language: This recording was captured on January 29th, 2017, at 1.34pm. Now the Ottawa river is very large: 1,271 kilometers in length with a drain area of 146,300 square kilometers. You're listening to a recording I made west of downtown. The current is strong here and the sound is a deep rumble of rushing water and breaking ice. The recording also includes the high-pitched sound of cross-country skiers along a path by the river. Shall we go inside?(Elevators and office sounds) Ottawa is many things, including a city of office towers and bureaucrats. I love office tower sounds: hums, clicks, echoes, voices, drones, rhythms, patterns, etc. This recording explores the spaces where people enter and exit the building. I love transitions like this. You hear going up and down stairs and elevators, which btw ‘talk' both French and English.(skating on rideau canal)How's about a skate on the infamous rideau canal skateway? It's January 26th, 2017, and we're skating at a rapid pace. Can you feel the wind on your face? Can you feel the rumble of the ice under your feet? The Rideau Canal Skateway is the largest skate way is 7.8 kilometers long). However last year it did not open due to warming temperatures in Ottawa, which is a sign of the times and the reason why I dedicated a lot of my time to promoting the role of art in the climate emergency. And I think deepening our listening can make a difference. Let's conclude this portrait of winter sounds in Ottawa back on parliament hill. (crowd on parliament hill)It's February 18, 2017, at 11.58am people gather here from across the country all the time to protest, mourn or celebrate. Tourists from all around the world also come to witness parliament hill and listen to… (parliament hill bells)Thanks for listening to this special episode of The Place of Sound. Thanks to Vincent Andrisani for his support and congratulations to the students of Carleton University on their excellent programming and to CKCU for broadcasting them and being a good community partner. And thank you for listening. I encourage you to listen to the place of the sound where you live.I also encourage you to discover your own place of sound. *This episode was produced in October 2023 in my home studio. In this episode, we look at some of the politics around Defence – and especially the AUKUS part of it. In Australia we have effectively two part-time Ministers responsible for a massive and troubled portfolio and it raises questions about whether the government has the appetite for, or the ability to carry out, reforms and improvements. Even if the nuclear-powered task force has a plan to acquire second-hand Virginia class submarines that doesn't guarantee success – history is full of failed military plans. Unfortunately, AUKUS is developing a cult-like atmosphere where only believers in the plan are included in discussions, which is a recipe for disaster. We might be looking at a combination of another Donald Trump Presidency and a minority ALP government – just imagine the consequences of that. Hosted on Acast. After that, Norm started talking about the Alex Jones case and some comparisons between it and some of the comments made by Democrats during the Donald Trump Presidency and January 6th committee, which drew an interesting phone call from a listener in New Haven (24:03). Show Notes In my second semester of grad school, I was properly introduced to Dr. Angie Maxwell. I had heard about her book The Long Southern Strategy and knew it would provide the political history that would help on the GOP side of my thesis. It was such a delight to talk with Dr. Maxwell and really dive deep into the history of conservative politics and southern politics with her. Be sure to follow along with the Substack. Scores of QAnon followers gathered in downtown Dallas earlier this week in the hopes that John F Kennedy Jr, who has been dead for more than 20 years, would appear heralding the reinstatement of Donald Trump as president. Kennedy, the son of former President John F Kennedy, died in 1999 in a plane crash at the age of 38. Some of the believers of this conspiracy say Kennedy did not die, that he has been in hiding. One post from a widely followed QAnon social media account said that after Trump was reinstated as president, he would step down and JFK Jr would become president. There was no return from the dead for JFK Jr though, and what was prophesised by the conspiracy theorists did not happen. Psychologist and expert in radicalisation Sophia Moskalenko has researched QAnon extensively. She spoke to Corin Dann.
What a week! Los Angeles pardoned rent during the Covid-19 Pandemic, and now it looks like the laws are now going to protect the renters from every paying back the rent. It is indeed the final day of the Donald Trump Presidency, and our Facebook audience appears to be counting it down like its New Years Eve. Something about playing in New York has been bad for our local winter teams this week, as the Bruins lose to the Islanders. Please stay with GBH Radio for complete coverage of the inauguration events in Washington DC, and thanks as always for choosing GBH News.

Donald Trump is facing a second impeachment, having now been banned from Twitter permanently (before this was recorded) it's not been a good week for the President or the US with violent scenes as a mob stormed the capitol buildings. Scotty and Motty chat about this and why 11 more days of a Donald Trump Presidency may be 11 days too many.

The titled song Trapped dissects urban allegory discribing the anxiety of a young black male in America. Thus obstacles paved by systemic racism accompanied with government oppression, along with self mental oppression brought forth by environment of urban decay. On this episode, I invited two senior political science majors to analyze what is happening to the GOP since Trump's election. The multiple occurrences of statements by the President in direct opposition to the GOP leadership and threats issued by the President to members of Congress and other GOP leaders who stand in opposition to the President stand in stark contrast to political maneuvering by a political party that holds such power in all three branches of government. These two students analyze multiple perspectives of the effect of the Donald Trump Presidency on the GOP and later in the episode on the Democratic Party. We analyzed the behavior of the President, asking many questions: Is he manipulating the American people? Is Mr. Trump manipulating his base? For what purpose? Has he weakened the GOP? Would this manipulation and weakening of the GOP prevent an impending impeachment? Is one of his goals to stop impeachment? Is Mr. Trump's history of multiple political party alliances an indicator that he is building support for the creation of his own political party? What effect is this split and confusion in the GOP having on the Democratic Party? The Democratic Party seems to be doing nothing with this opportunity for leadership... why?

To be clear, this podcast episode has nothing to do with Trump himself and his administration, instead, it dives into a biased financial media that profits off your moving your money elsewhere. Welcome everyone to the 11th episode of the Highly Relevant podcast. It’s a new day, a new United State of America and happy pop culture escapism is taking a back seat on this episode as I want to use this forum to talk about the reality of a Trump Presidency. People are upset. Half of America is protesting in the streets across the nation and there’s this feeling of hopeless that has seeped into half of the country. The only way to get passed this is by opening the right channels of conversation, by asking direct, but honest questions that you won’t hear from particular news networks. Think of this platform as an alternative voice to legacy media, a place where YOUR voice does matter, especially right now. In today’s episode we are speaking to an wide array of people such as Glenn Albright (11:26) a clinical psychologist about the malaise that many people are feeling at this moment. What is it and how do we recover from it? I also chat with reporter Alex Emmons (21:30) from the news website The Intercept about his article THE NIGHTMARE PRESIDENT - how bad does he think America will be under Trump? I then chat with Debbye Turner Bell (28:10), an African-American journalist and mother about her view of the media right now and what she’s telling her children of this new future. And finally, I interview Jessica Reyes, a Latina Trump Supporter (2:38), whose answers will make you rethink about the “so-called unity” of Latinos in the United States today. Episode Summary: Jessica Reyes, a Latina Trump Supporter 2:38 Glenn Albright, Psychologist 11:26 Alex Emmons, The Intercept 21:30 Journalist Debbye Turner Bell: 28:10 You'd like to give us your feedback or get a shout-out?
