EPISODE 24 - “The Hollywood Studio Club: Where The Good Girls Lived” - 02/26/2024 During the early days of Hollywood, hordes of young women pilgrimaged West to try to break into the movie business. And like sheep to slaughter, there were just as many men in Hollywood ready to take advantage of these young, inexperienced, and vulnerable young women. However, the Hollywood Studio Club, a hotel for women, run by women, tried to give these women a safe haven in the storm. Started by a librarian and nurtured by movie star MARY PICKFORD, among others, this hotel provided a safe place to live and helped nurture the budding careers of future Hollywood Stars such as MAUREEN O”SULLIVAN, LINDA DARNELL, DOROTHY MALONE, DONNA REED, KIM NOVAK, MARILYN MONROE and SHARON TATE. In this episode we'll explore the history and legacy of this very special place in Hollywood History.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: "Film Girls Ask New Home: Studio Club of Hollywood to Campaign for Building Fund Middle of Next Month,” February 10, 1923, Los Angeles Times  "Building of Studio Club Is Assured: Norma Talmadge Donates $5000 Toward New Home for Film Girls,” February 14, 1925, Los Angeles Times "Studio Club Dedicates New Home,” May 8, 1926, Los Angeles Times “Few Girls From Club Win Fame,” May 22, 1938, Los Angeles Times “Boardinghouse of Broken Hearts,” September 19,1958, Saturday Evening Post  "Studio Club Fighting to Save Home,” November 13, 1970, Los Angeles Times. In this episode, Matt and Sam join Moira Donegan and Adrian Daub — co-hosts of the new podcast “In Bed With The Right" — for an in-depth look at the life, times, and work of the late Midge Decter, who died in 2022. Decter was inspired by a distinctly conservative, mid-century American reading of Freudian psychology, mobilized in defense of traditional family hierarchies, which made her an important link between neoconservatives and the religious right — unsurprisingly, she helped found or served on the boards of numerous conservative organizations, including the Heritage Foundation, Committee for the Free World, and the Independent Women's Forum, among others.  Her essays, books, and memoirs represent an anguished counter-revolt against the sexual liberation movements of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and her trajectory from (ostensible) New Deal liberal to anti-feminist Cold Warrior proves a perfect subject for Know Your Enemy. Decter also was married to Norman Podhoretz (another subject of KYE lore) and the mother of John Podhoretz, current editor of Commentary magazine. When businessman John H. Johnson died in 2005, Ebony Magazine, the monthly photo-editorial magazine that he launched in 1945, reached an estimated 10 million readers. Under the direction of executive editor Lerone Bennet Jr. for several decades, Ebony helped shape Black culture and perceptions of Black history. Johnson Publishing Company helped shape Chicago history, too, when they opened their Loop location in 1972, at 820 S. Michigan Ave. The now-iconic 11-story, 110,000 square-foot building was the first major downtown building to be designed by an African American architect, John W. Moutoussamy, and the first skyscraper owned by an African American in the Loop.  Joining me this week to help us understand more about Johnson Publishing is Dr. E. James West, a Lecturer at University College London, co-director of the Black Press Research Collective, and author of Ebony Magazine and Lerone Bennett Jr.: Popular Black History in Postwar America, A House for the Struggle: The Black Press and the Built Environment in Chicago, and Our Kind of Historian: The Work and Activism of Lerone Bennett Jr. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-roll audio is from the Sol Taishoff Award ceremony on February 25, 1986, where Don Hewitt, John Johnson and John Quinn were recognized for Excellence in Journalism. The video was aired on C-SPAN and is in the public domain. The episode image is “Ebony magazine, Volume LX, Number 12 honoring the life of John H. Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone, a country in Western Africa. The name of the city has links to its origin as a British colony used to repatriate freed black people from across the British Empire (Jamaica and Canada) as well as other places as far and wide as The Congo and Lake Malawi. Britain insisted Freetown represented humanity, justice, and freedom but it didn't represent any of those things. It stole land, got local chiefs to sign dodgy contracts, and highlighted the false ideology of European superiority. In this episode, we look at how Britain annexed land in Freetown, and later on, Sierra Leone. Follow us on IG: itsacontinentpod and Twitter: itsacontinent. In 1904 a Manhattan church outing descended into horror when a passenger steamboat caught fire on the East River. More than a thousand people struggled to survive as the captain raced to reach land. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the burning of the General Slocum, the worst maritime disaster in the history of New York City. We'll also chase some marathon cheaters and puzzle over a confusing speeding ticket. Intro: In 1959 a Norwegian insulation company wrangled a three-ton block of ice from the arctic to the equator. Golf Cart Gail wouldn’t let this go even after the Dad explained to her the situation at hand. Golf Cart Gail called the cops.   Key Fob Kelly is the newest member of the aforementioned Busybody Leagues of America. Key Fob Kelly blocked the entrance of a black man just trying to enter his apartment building and then his apartment. Key Fob Kelly demanded he show proof that he lived there and he would not. Key Fob Kelly then followed him to his door and still felt she was right for doing this.   Pro Gamer, Douglas Martin, recently broke up with his girlfriend who has been dubbed the World’s Hottest Weather Girl, Yanet Garcia. Here’s a tip: When a member of your spouse’s family asks to stay with you, just say no. That’s the lesson Brandi took from the murder of millionaire Jacques Mossler. When his younger, “toothpaste model” wife, Candy, suggested they let her nephew Melvin move into their sprawling Houston home, Jacques said sure. But over time, Candy and her nephew got close. Too close. Then Kristin tells us about the bizarre kidnapping of stay-at-home-mom Quinn Gray. Her kidnapping panicked and perplexed her husband, Reid Gray. Reid was wealthy. Super wealthy. But the ransom note indicated that the kidnappers only wanted $50,000. Why so little? And why did the kidnappers let Quinn make so many phone calls? As Quinn’s kidnapping dragged on, the case got more and more strange. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Ransom” episode of Dateline “Withhold of adjudication: What everyone needs to know,” Florida Bar Association “Bizarre saga of fake kidnapping of Quinn Hanna Gray reaches quiet end in court,” Jacksonville.com “Ponte Vedra woman who faked kidnapping accused of violating probation,” Jacksonville.com “Nancy Grace Investigates: The Quinn Gray Tapes Part 2,” CNN.com In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “A Million Dollar Murder” by David Krajicek, Crime Library “Lust and Death on Key Biscayne” by Matt Schudel, Sun Sentinel “Melvin Powers is Dead at 68” by Douglas Martin, The New York Times

Rob Rotten is not a fan of the DC Comics movies, and Warner Bros.’ refusal to get it right enrages him more.  The upcoming Batgirl film may have found their leading lady, and it’s a terrible choice. Don’t agree with him, tweet him at @TheRobRotten. Strip clubs could soon be a thing of the past because lap dances are now considered violence against women. Our idiot of the week is professional video game player Douglas Martin for dumping his smoking hot weather girl girlfriend Yanet Garcia.  Look her up, she is the absolute hottest weather girl in the world. A lingerie company is running ads featuring disabled models.  Does a woman in her underwear showing a colostomy bag sexy to you?  That’s not to say that we disapprove of people needing those, but it doesn’t exactly equal better sales for your brand.
