The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the fourteenth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guests are the command team from 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, COL Andrew Kiser and CSM Michael Eierman. The SBCT's Hollywood call-sign is “Warhorse” but are also known as “Mountain Warrior” and their motto of “For Love of Country.”   The 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team was established in November 1917 as the 7th Infantry Brigade for the 4th Infantry Division and served valiantly in World War I. The brigade was deactivated just prior to World War II but saw service during the Vietnam War. The Mountain Warrior Brigade is one of the most deployed brigades during the Global War on Terror with numerous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Their long, distinguished service to the Nation includes nineteen Medal of Honor recipients with three recipients from the GWOT era.   The Mountain Warrior Brigade's rotation at the JRTC was the first Stryker rotation in nearly five years as the rotational training unit. This rotation was an extremely complex rotation as it was almost a Division (-) or at least BCT (+) sized rotation as in addition to being a SBCT, they also had attached 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the Canadian 3 R22eR light infantry battalion, and 83rd Chemical Battalion as well as an armored company and Paladin battery for a grand total of eight thousand Soldiers and 1,600 vehicles training at the Joint Readiness Training Center.   In this episode they discuss some of lessons learned from operating Stryker and armored elements across complex, restrictive terrain during large scale combat operations. They emphasized the need to focus on the heavy-light / mounted-dismounted paradigm required to fight across complex terrain at a high operations tempo. As COL Kiser described it, “Fighting Geronimo in a broom closet.” The brigade heavily focused on the dismounted infantry squad being the primary maneuver element with the Strykers simply providing transportation and sustainment with occasional use as support-by-fire assets.   Part of S02 “If I Would Have Only Known” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please checkout our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.

This is the first edition of the Short Time Shots where I’m actually recording from the Speakeasy Studio in wonderfully chilly New Brighton, Minnesota. Let’s first be clear, there’s nothing wonderful about being chilly. That was sarcasm. Now, I’ve got a sit-stand desk that I’m working on improving my mobility around the house, because I cannot sit in this stupid chair for 12 hours a day and expect anything good to come of it. Secondly, my desk is no longer in the corner of my bedroom, meaning I can actually walk around to my side of the bed. For five months, that was not possible. Now I’ve still got some things to do to complete it - mainly build the bar and put the rest of the stuff on the walls to complete the sound treatment, but all in all, I’m VERY happy with it so far. I’m also recording this for Facebook Live, just to see how things work on OBS, which is pretty cool.  Minnesota Beer of the Night: Black Ale from Bent Paddle Brewing in Duluth. Six percent. Dark and delicious. By the way, I’m on untappd at jasonbryant12. New Patron: Kevin McGuigan jumps on board. He’s been following and listening for a while as well as he also sent me a shirt for the long lost #WrestlingShirtADay that I did in 2018. No, I’m never doing it again, by the way.  Dual Meets:  Down in Carolina - North Carolina - Belmont Abbey used four falls to power past first-year Mount Olive 34-19 in Division II action. Greg Hilliard registered the fastest fall of the night, picking up six in 34 seconds at 165 pounds. Kenn Caudell’s squad - they’re the Crusaders.  In Division III, Cortland State went 3-0 as the Red Dragons beat Pitt-Bradford 35-18, King’s College 33-13 and host Lycoming 19-18. Lycoming beat Pitt-Bradford 42-18 and King’s 44-10. Pitt-Bradford beat King’s 22-16.  Notables on the Docket: Notre Dame College heads to take on the new program at Fairmont State, while NAIA Southern Oregon heads down the coast to take on San Francisco State, coached by three-time Northwestern All-American Jason Welch.  In Division III, Huntingdon, that’s in Alabama in case you were wondering, hosts a pair of NAIA schools, Life and Thomas More.  In the NAIA, Missouri Valley host the MVC Duals in Marshall. Teams expected to compete there are Baker, Williams Baptist, Bethany, Campbellsville, Ottawa, Waldorf, St. Mary, William Penn, Lincoln, Rochester (Mich.) and of course, the host Vikings of Mo. Val.  FROM THE DWN: In a joint release, USA Wrestling, the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Coalition and Adrian College announced the first Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships will be held in Adrian, Michigan on March 6-7, 2020. This event will give the NCAA-branded schools an opportunity to compete in the postseason. There’s already an NAIA invitational, but what this means for the longstanding WCWA remains to be seen. I know I’ve got some major plans for women’s wrestling in the future.  Brown and Harvard announced they were partnering to create the New England Regional Training Center and they’ve hired Mike Eierman to be the head coach. Eierman, at least as of last week, was the head wrestling coach at Division III Westminster College in Missouri.  Over the weekend, Fresno City College won its fourth straight California Community College state championship, outdistancing second-place Cerritos 186-137. The Rams, coached by 1991 NCAA champion Paul Keysaw, had four champions. One notable came from Skyline College, which is in San Bruno, just south of San Francisco. Sophomore Stephen Martin became Skyline’s first state champion in 19 years. The San Mateo Daily Journal breaks that down. Over the weekend, it was announced that Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville, Ohio will be adding a varsity wrestling program. The school had baseball already and will also add women’s volleyball. Dom Mancini, a longtime high school coach at Boardman High School has been named the Gators first head coach. That’s 241 new college programs - men and women - since 2000.  NC State hired a new director of operations, appointing Ian Assael to the role after the departure of Melissa Simmons. Normally, I don’t draw attention to Director of Ops positions in the newsletter or Shots, but I wanted to give Melissa a solid salute and a verbal high five here. There are few people I’ve met in the sport of wrestling who are as complete and as dedicated as Melissa Simmons. She’s also got an innate ability to do good things for people. When my daughter Lucy was in the hospital a couple of years ago - I’m not sure which time since Lucy’s had a lot of these types of things - Melissa sent a gift package for Lucy that included a stuffed mascot, one that Lucy still pals around with today. It fits well with her Lion King collection. Tuffy plays the role as one of the hyenas, since according to my daughter, they’re both dogs. Melissa is moving out of wrestling, which sucks for us. I worked with her when she interned at USA Wrestling and with a client-vendor relationship with the NC State #PackMentality Pop-Ins Podcast. No one paid faster and no one has been more complete and consistent than Melissa with NC State. Good luck and we hope to see you around soon. Your work has always been above and beyond, even when going to pick up subs in Colorado Springs.  WSAW in Wausau, Wisconsin features the women’s program at UW-Stevens Point. Joe Tuscano of the Observer-Reporter, a finalist for NWMA Journalist of the Year last year, pens a column about the new rule in Pennsylvania allowing more than one wrestler from a team to appear in bracketed tournaments around the state. Not sure why PA was late to the party on this. When I was wrestling, sometimes we’d be in 32-team tournaments and we’d get two or even three guys in a weight - only one would score, though.   On The Network Nothing new today.  You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. As you’ve most certainly heard by now, my wife, who is a complete Rockstar at her job, is coming back from China today. In fact, she’ll probably be walking in on the recording of the end of this episode. So another week, I’ve survived the challenges and championships of being a parent. Today, I chaperoned my daughter Lucy’s second-grade field trip to one of the history places in St. Paul. My wife does most of this stuff, since a lot of the times, I’m at a tournament or something. Today was great to see my daughter interact with her friends. She’s been through a lot already, but just one of those days where my own survival instincts and being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of fruit snacks and chattering seven-year-olds were in a cohesive balance. I’m Jason Bryant, this is Short Time Shots, a look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. Dual Meets: Limited night again with ranked Division I teams in action, we kick things off as No. 5 Nebraska got into the groove early, hosting a trio of non-Division I opponents in Lincoln. The Huskers only wrestled twice, beating a pair of Division II squads - Nebraska-Kearney 47-0 and Chadron State 37-3. Other outcomes saw Nebraska-Kearney blank NAIA Hastings 54-0 and Chadron State beat Hastings 45-3. Out in New York, No. 7 Wisconsin beat host Buffalo 33-3 at Mayhem on the Mainstage, another presentation of collegiate wrestling in a theater setting. Depending on what rankings you look at, there weren’t many ranked matchups here. Seth Gross beat Derek Spann 7-2 at 133 for the Badgers, while two-time All-American Evan Wick beat Troy Keller at 165. Loras, the top-ranked team in Division III, opened up its dual meet season with a 51-6 win over American Rivers Conference rival Buena Vista on Thursday. All nine wins from the Duhawks were bonus victories, including six falls. Keeping it D3, Wisconsin-Whitewater topped Wisconsin-Oshkosh 26-18. Mike and Devin Totorice were impressive for the Warhawks as Mike picked up a tech fall at 125 and Devin a major decision at 149. In the NAIA, the coaching debut of Steve Komac was a successful one as No. 16 Providence (Mont.) knocked off rival and No. 17 Montana State-Northern 25-22. Warner Pacific picked up a fall from heavyweight Cortez Rodelo in nine seconds to lift the Knights, spoiling the first dual in school history for host Corban University. Benedictine (Kan.) and Waldorf wrestled to a 5-5 split, but two forfeits were the difference as Benedictine, they’re the Ravens, nevermore, beat Waldorf 21-18. Now a run of mixed-divisional results, first in Ohio where former InterMat results maven Dan Ransick continues to be boiling mad, Division II Ashland topped NAIA Lourdes 29-12, with 2018 Division II champion Bret Romanzak picking up a 6-0 win at 174 pounds. In the Upper Midwest, Division II Northern State spanked Division III John’s – the one in Minnesota - 42-3. St. John’s Jacob Scherber won the bout’s first match at 174 pounds, but the next nine went the way of the Wolves. In keeping with the D2 over D3 theme, Mary defeated Concordia-Moorhead 28-6. The Marauders, yes, a name they share in wrestling with Millersville, put nearly 1,000 people in the stands on a Wednesday night where the November temperature is a paltry 19 degrees. Division III Central College shut out NAIA William Penn 52-0 in a matchup between a pair of Iowa schools. Daniel Radcliffe, no, not THAT Daniel Radcliffe, started a parade of pins from 141 to 165 and the DUTCH cruised. NJCAA Jamestown (N.Y.) beat Division III Pitt-Bradford, but we have to let them know their scored the dual wrong – you do NOT receive points for a double forfeit. It’s 0-0, not 6-6. Learned that in high school. Remember it well. I think the referee that dual was a guy named Jim Hedrick. Another junior college picking up a win was Labette topping Oklahoma Wesleyan of the NAIA 37-5. Out in California, two scores to report: Top-ranked Fresno City beat Chabot 45-6, while second-ranked Cerritos cruised past Rio Hondo 33-8. It’s almost midnight as I record this in Minnesota, so that’s my cut off for now. It’s like opening up the baseball page in the old newspaper, when you actually read a newspaper, and seeing “Late Thursday.” Well, yeah. PROMO CODE WARNING I’ve recently posted on Twitter about the number of wrestling podcasts currently out in the wild. There’s about 63 active shows with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. They’ve been the backbone of this network and if you don’t reach out to me for technical advice, at least hear me on this one – com, use promo code MTO and get your free month (and a half!) Notables on the Docket for November 8: Friday will be a really light day as Wisconsin continues its eastward trip, wrestling Edinboro in an already sold out Saegertown High School gym. The biggest dual of the night is No. 17 North Carolina heading to Ann Arbor to face No. 19 Michigan. Neither team will be at full strength on paper, but it’s November. FROM THE DWN: Jaydin Eierman will be a Hawkeye. It’s all over the internet, so here’s a story about it from Flowrestling, one from com and why not, a link to Eierman’s Instagram. com’s Potentially Dangerous returns with a lot of takes on the happenings around Iowa wrestling, from the major college teams to the opens this weekend and some high school happenings, as well. IAwrestle also reported another Hawkeye commitment, as Caleb Rathjen also committed to Iowa on Thursday. In a bizarre story, the AP reported on the strange case of Alexis Vila, a 1993 freestyle world champion and 1996 Olympic bronze medalist, and his role in the plot to kill a South Florida interior designer. Vila later fought in various MMA promotions. You also might remember Vila ran his car into the terminal at the Fort Lauderdale airport in 2004. West Virginia’s Matthew Schmitt announced he will be taking the year off with an Olympic redshirt to train in Greco-Roman. Lehigh announced its December 6 dual with Penn State at Stabler Arena is now sold out. Speaking of tickets, Rutgers announced its season ticket number has exceeded 3,000. That’s pretty freaking good. The Predicament continues with its Senior Spotlight series. On Thursday, Central Lyon’s Jarrett Meyer, gets the look. Transition Wrestling gives us a look at the weekend action in women’s college wrestling coming up. The Open Mat’s Earl Smith gives us a tour of The Citadel on the most recent TOM Campus Visit feature. Earl was down there last week covering The Battle at The Citadel. The Tulsa World features former Oklahoma State Cowboy Kyle Crutchmer as he makes his MMA debut with Bellator on Friday in Thackerville, Oklahoma. While I said I wouldn’t link up things behind paywalls, I’ll make an exception if you have a subscription to high profile sports website, The Athletic. Today, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto’s wrestling background is prominently featured. Realmuto is the nephew of the famous Smith brothers from Oklahoma. Yes, THOSE Smith brothers. Olaf alum Alex Morf pens a heartfelt and direct letter to the administration at the school in the Manitou Messenger, the school’s student newspaper. He starts off quoting John Irving. Even poor leaders like David Anderson might know who he is. On the Network Rob Waltko and Tristan Warner entertain you with a PA-centered recap of the weekend’s action on the PA Power Wrestling College Podcast. They’re joined by Clarion’s Brock Zacherl. If you’re not familiar with that show, all three of the show’s hosts, which include Mason Beckman as well, wrestled Division I and grew up in PA. It’s one of my favorite shows on the network. Getting back into the flow of college wrestling season is always one of those things where you’re all fired up and excited and doing so many things, and then by April, you’re like totally spent. Only this year, April means the Olympic Trials! Yes, it’s the first week of November, it’s already snowed twice here in Minnesota and I might already be overdoing it here with Short Time Shots. But have no fear, it’s still pushing through the adversity that is week one of the college wrestling season. It’s too early to whine, I’m Jason Bryant.    Dual Meets: With Tommy Baranowski and Kevin Claunch from Bloodround on the call, Division II Davenport went into Alma College’s gym and beat the Division III Scots 25-20. Rock On. Tommy offered his referee-endorsing apologist viewpoint, while Claunch was spending so much time looking at wrestler’s feet. Ok, he’s a shoe guy, Promo Code Blood20, right guys? The Danny Irwin era at West Liberty got off to a strong start as the Division II Hilltoppers won nine of 10 bouts to defeat the NAIA Golden Bears of West Virginia Tech 48-3. Fastest fall of the night came at 285 where Chase Logan of West Liberty picked up the win in 1:41. The Nick Soto era at St. Andrews wasn’t as welcoming as Division II Belmont Abbey cruised past NAIA St. Andrews 43-6 in a matchup between North Carolina schools. Quick fall for Belmont Abbey was Chandler Echols’ 41-second fall at 174 pounds. In a dual that actually involved two teams from the same Division, that being Division III, Ferrum beat Greensboro 30-6. Both of Ferrum’s returning All-Americans, Levi Englman and Mario Vasquez earned victories at 133 and 141 – respectively of course. Both schools are relatively new programs. A fall at heavyweight by Bridgewater State’s Ryan Higgins was doubly impactful on Wednesday. Not only did his fall tie the team score at the end of the 10 bouts, it was the tie-breaking criteria as it was the dual’s only one and it lifted Bridgewater State past New England College 20-19. I watched most of that dual. Nebraska Wesleyan spoiled the debut of the new Division III program at Fontbonne, that’s in St. Louis. The Prairie Wolves won 38-13 with All-American Eron Haynes, the newly minted American Rivers Conference Wrestler of the Week, picking up a fall in 86 seconds at 133 pounds. In the NAIA, Graceland fell behind the brand new program at Central Methodist 12-0 after three weights, but would win the six of the next seven weights and come away with a 27-15 win in Fayette, Missouri. In the NJCAA, Niagara Community College opened up with a 28-20 win over Mercyhurst North East. Niagara won three of the last four weights to pull out the win, highlighted by Adam Mateo’s fall at 184 pounds. Northwest Tech beat Otero 42-18. Notables on the Docket for November 7: Nebraska hosts Division II’s Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney. NAIA Hastings is in there too. Life Pacific and San Francisco State head up to Vanguard, a newly reinstated program in Costa Mesa, California. Up the coast, Warner Pacific heads over to Corban to take on the brand new program there in Oregon. The Battle of Montana continues with Montana State-Northern facing off with Providence – yes, the one in Montana that used to be Great Falls. Iowa Conf- Excuse me, American Rivers Conference action gets underway with Buena Vista traveling East to take on the top-ranked team in Division III – the Loras Duhawks. Yes, there’s another team in Iowa starting the year ranked No. 1. In the Dakotas, Concordia-Moorhead will cross the Red River and face Mary, while St. John’s does the same, only a little further south, facing Division II Northern State – which is in SOUTH Dakota. In Wisconsin, UW-Oskhosh faces UW-Whitewater. Other than Nebraska, the only other Division I action is in New York as No. 7 Wisconsin takes on Buffalo. Note: This isn’t every dual on the schedule, but a good sample of the better ones or more notable things going on. FROM THE DWN: Biggest news of the day came in the brunch hours as Flowrestling and MissouriWrestle both reported three-time Missouri All-American Jaydin Eierman has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Eierman, a native of Columbia – the one in Missouri – is taking an Olympic redshirt this year. This is another major shakeup with a second big name hitting the portal in a week. While behind the Flo Pro paywall, Flo’s Mark Bader had a Skype call with Eierman, who said he’s got a top choice, but didn’t say it on the video. The Daily Herald in Utah reports that 2018 Final X runner-up Jason Chamberlain is making the switch from freestyle to Greco-Roman to challenge for a spot on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team. Chamberlain placed five times in Fargo at the age-group levels, twice in Greco, with is best finish in that style coming in 2007 when he was the runner-up at 135 pounds. Following up on that news, the kids at the Home Mat Advantage Podcast have Jason Chamberlain on the show to talk about it! Over the weekend, Pat Pecora, the head coach at Pitt-Johnstown, picked up career victory No. 600 in the Mountain Cats win over LIU. The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown breaks down Pecora’s 44 years at the helm. He’s 16 wins behind Oregon State’s Dale Thomas, who has the all-division record with 616 dual meet victories. com with another strong athlete feature, this time from veteran media professional Darren Miller. This one’s on Kaleb Young, the Pennsylvania native and returning All-American. Columbia also offers up a solid inhouse feature with volunteer assistant Shelton Mack as he breaks down his trip to Russia in Taking Down Cultural Boundaries. Lehigh’s Cory Cooperman and Ed Hamer, American’s Josh Glenn, and Penn State’s Jack Light were announced as the induction class of the 2020 EIWA Hall of Fame. Trackwrestling’s Andy Hamilton keeps an eye on the market – the wrestling market – with Stock Watch, a new feature that identifies who’s up and who’s down in the Division I rankings this week. The Great Falls Tribune features Providence interim wrestling coach Steve Komac, a local high school coach thrust into a post coaching one of the NAIA’s top teams. The Predicament showcases the Galanakis-Sundell showdown on Inside the Rivalry, Chapter 7, Part 4. Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling writes about Transition Wrestling as part of #WomensWednesday. Gary, who will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame next Spring, has long served on committees and headed up special projects involving women’s wrestling. He talks to the site’s founder, Gabrielle Lord-Klein about Transition Wrestling on TheMat.com. On The Network If you missed Penn State coach Cael Sanderson’s media day on Tuesday, you can listen to the entire press conference on Short Time, with proper attribution and thanks to Penn State Athletics, which provided the content to the media. No cheeky intros. No elaborate song lyrics sprinkled through. Today, it’s just wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a sometimes daily rundown of the day’s wrestling scores and more. There will be more on the AWL in other episodes, since this show concentrates on the college levels of the sport. Highlights though were Jordan Oliver knocking off Zain Retherford, Alex Dieringer beating Isaiah Martinez, Cory Clark beating Tony Ramos and Kyven Gadson giving a very short interview after he beat Jacob Kasper to get to the hospital, where he had a baby on the way - like literally any minute. All those results on Trackwrestling. Check the daily newsletter at mattalkonline.com/news or the @mattalkonline twitter for links to the recaps. In Las Vegas, as always, there were some solid upsets and individual wins. Ohio State put six into the semis, so that’s the short version. All that can be viewed at Flowrestling. But here’s some of the quarterfinal notables from Friday in Lost Wages. Notables from each weight: At 125: North Dakota State’s Brent Fleetwood stormed into the semifinals with back-to-back wins over Louie Hayes and Zeke Moisey. He’ll face top-seeded Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern, while down low, it’s a 2-3 matchup with Minnesota’s Sean Russell facing Oregon State’s Ronnie Bresser. At 133: Pittsburgh’s Micky Phillipi upended Minnesota’s Ethan Lizak 4-0 in the quarters to reach Saturday’s semifinals. He’ll face second-seeded Luke Pletcher of Ohio State, while up top, it’s No. 1 Nick Suriano of Rutgers and No. 4 John Erneste of Mizzou. Erneste is 3-0 with three first-period falls. At 141: Second-seeded Jaydin Eierman gave up a reversal and then outlasted Michigan’s Kanen Storr 3-2 in the tiebreakers. Eierman will see a familiar foe, Illinois’ Mikey Carr in the semis. Up top, it’s one vs. four with Joey McKenna of Ohio State meeting Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber. Storr, by the way, knocked off Chad Red of Nebraska in the Round of 16. All-American Red was bounced out of the tournament in the consolations. At 149: Clarion’s Brock Zacherl upended All-American Grant Leeth and his neckbrace 3-2 in the quarterfinals courtesy of a third-period takedown. Zacherl will face Micah Jordan of Ohio State in the semis, while fifth-seeded Mitch Finesilver of Duke reached the semis after beating All-American Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa 3-2. Finesilver will face Rutgers’ Anthony Ashnault. At 157: The on-again, off-again Griffin Parriott is on again. The Purdue sophomore beat All-American Tyler Berger of Nebraska 4-2 in the quarters and earned the right to face fifth-seeded Taleb Rahmani of Pittsburgh. Rahmani beat Eric Barone of Illinois, who had previously bumped off Ohio State’s Ke-shawn Hayes. Down low, it’s Kennedy Monday of UNC against Ryan Deakin of Northwestern. At 165: Michigan’s Logan Massa seems back in his Super Saiyan Level 3 form. He breezed into the semis and will face fourth-seeded Isaiah White of Nebraska. Just so you know, while looking up the correct spelling of Saiyan, I got distracted by the Dragon Ball wiki. Where were you when you first watched the Namek saga? Down low, Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech upended red-hot Branson Ashworth of Wyoming 3-1. He’ll face Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert in the semis. In just three short minutes, the Planet Namek … that was the longest three minutes in television history. At 174, all top four seeds reached the semis as Michigan’s Myles Amine will face Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola and Northern Iowa’s Taylor Lujan will face Missouri’s Daniel Lewis. At 184, second-seeded Taylor Venz of Nebraska was down 8-4 with riding time against in the third period when he countered a Nino Bonaccorsi shot by stepping over a chestlock and earning the fall. Venz will face sixth-seeded Drew Foster of Northern Iowa, who beat All-American Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech 9-6 in the quarters. Up top, Myles Martin of Ohio State has been rock solid. He’ll face All-American Max Dean of Cornell in the semis. Dean majored North Carolina’s Chip Ness in the quarters. At 197, unseeded Greg Bulsak of Clarion picked off Virginia Tech’s Tom Sleigh 8-1 in the quarters to reach his semifinal opponent, 10th-seeded Eric Schultz of Nebraska. Second-seeded Nathan Traxler of Stanford was upset by Virginia’s Jay Aiello early, then Schultz edged Aiello 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Up top, Kollin Moore of Ohio State is back in action after returning from the U23 Worlds. He’ll face Purdue’s Christian Brunner, the fifth-seed, in the semis there. Brunner beat Tanner Orndorff of Utah Valley in the quarters. Orndorff majored Drexel’s No. 4 seed Stephen Loiseau in the Round of 32. At 285 pounds, unseeded Chase Singletary of Ohio State pulled two upsets on his way to the semis. First he beat Northwestern’s Conan Jennings 6-5 in the Round of 16, then he pinned Central Michigan’s Matt Stencel in the quarters. Singletary will face Tate Orndorff of Utah Valley in the semis, while up top, Gable Steveson of Minnesota is almost to the point of going full heel turn as he bullied his way into the semis with some powerful bonus victories. Steveson will face North Carolina’s Cory Daniel in the semis. Team-wise, it’s Ohio State, Missouri, Nebraska and Northern Iowa leading the back, with a host of teams bunched between 5-13. Now to some duals, where we had two historical feats occur in Pennsylvania. First, unranked Princeton beat Lehigh for the first time in 50 years and for the first time ever at Lehigh. While the eighth-ranked Mountain Hawks aren’t even close to full strength, you wrestle with who you’ve got and on Friday night, Princeton got them. Patrick Brucki’s win over Jake Jakobsen at 197 sealed the deal for this one. Further west in Lewisburg, the first sellout in Bucknell wrestling history with over 4,200 fans present saw No. 1 Penn State extend its dual meet win streak to 47 with a 42-3 win over the host Bison. No. 7 NC State survived a scare as they went to Norfolk, Virginia and beat Old Dominion 16-15. This one was supposed to take place on Thursday, but a bomb threat at ODU forced the school to postpone women’s basketball and wrestling events. The rest might have served the host Monarchs well as Larry Early upended second-ranked Hayden Hidlay at 157 pounds. That offset NC State’s upset at 141, where Jamal Morris beat Sa’Derian Perry 7-2. Tariq Wilson’s bonus point at 133 proved to be the difference. No. 20 Lock Haven had over 2,300 fans at Thomas Fieldhouse watch the Bald Eagles pick up an EWL win over George Mason 28-10. Other action in Division I saw Indiana beat Northern Illinois 20-14 and Ohio beat Appalachian State 25-16. In the NAIA, Grand View extended its win streak to 66 duals in a row as they blanked Benedictine 56-0. Out in Great Falls at the Battle of the Rockies duals, which saw schools from Division II, the NAIA and the NJCAA, McKendree won three duals, as did Embry-Riddle. Colorado School of Mines won a Division II tri over Chadron State and San Francisco State. Other multiple-dual winners on Friday included Eastern Oregon, Lindenwood, Northwest Kansas Tech, Providence (the one in Montana) and Spartanburg Methodist. Looking at some other tournaments, Johnson & Wales leads the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College - the one in Pennsylvania. The Wildcats lead Ithaca, Baldwin Wallace and Roger Williams. Quarters kick up tomorrow, so there should be rowdiness. Couple of national champions meet in the quarters too, as Division III champ Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales meets Colton Messick of the Newport News Apprentice School, the returning NCWA national champion. Messick was coached by my old roommate, Matt Wright, at Warwick H.S. in Newport News, Virginia. Same one where Michael Vick - and my brother actually - graduated from. 12.
