Special Note: This show had some audio issues, the opening is a bit different due to this. We are sorry. After 5 years of system spotlights, Sara and Rob have seen a ton of different settings and themes for games. But this just opened the door to focused themes and ideas that they have never seen, but probably exist somewhere. This week they will talk about systems, themes, and styles that they would like to see in the TTRPG space and perhaps some mechanics that can bring them to life! The Lords are back and today the gang gets right down to business talking about Jess' first time running a gamer for the group and what she learns, what she did great and some things she plans to work on for next time. Then the Lords dig into a meaty topic submitted by a listener asking what we are looking for in our RPG game systems and rulesets.
Finding the right game system to match the story you're trying to tell can be a daunting task. Sometimes, the best move is to use an existing system in an unconventional way. In Episode 281 Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger stroll Heritage Park in Manchester, New Hampshire, in search of the statue of a man sitting on a park bench holding a small box with dials on it. The statue depicts Ralph Baer, who changed the world back in 1966 when he developed the first home video game console. From two lines knocking a small digital square back-and-forth, a $220 billion dollar industry was born. See more here: https://ournewenglandlegends.com/podcast-281-the-man-behind-the-console/

This week we talk about the ancient and honored tradition of human storytelling, its base components, what defines a great storyteller, and how all of this applies to the TTRPG experience. We discuss how examining this discipline can improve our games, and how the idea of collaborative storytelling (i.e., story building) has evolved to accommodate the modern gaming paradigm. Exfil is an Escape From Tarkov Podcast On this episode, MTBtrigger and Ronal dive into the recent podcasts Nikita has been featured on. Nikita recently gave significant insight regarding the future and near future changes coming to Tarkov. Make sure to visit a friend of the show's website to get the latest Tarkov news: https://www.tarkovnews.com/blog https://www.tarkovnews.com/blog/nikita-talks-tarkov-with-bsg-emissaries Some of these changes are already starting to roll out in game - dynamic loot, for example. After explaining how dynamic loot works, MTB and Ronal talk about the various ways dynamic loot could affect the game in the short and long term and the balancing challenges Battlestate might face as a result. Another subtle mention by Nikita is the future addition of Dynamic Daily Quests. This may sound or seem, on the surface, like a typical addition to any MMO or MMO-like game, but the inclusion of the word Dynamic caused MTB to think about the opportunities BSG has to make this system unique. Quests could be given dynamically based on playstyle, current active quests, level, etc. If done correctly, the daily quests could also incentivize players to try new styles, explore new areas, or play on maps they don't consider playing on currently. Lastly, during the final impromptu raid story, MTBtrigger and Ronal talk about how all of the various systems in Escape from Tarkov and their detail and depth lead to incredible “Raid Stories” and memories being associated with this game. The final conversation may cause you to remember some raids you'd otherwise forget… maybe you want to forget, but MTB and Ronal won't let you. All this and more in the episode! PUNISHMENT AND DISCIPLING, something that was enforced in my family, most time by whoppings, but kids now seem to get away with everything, from talking back to abusing there parents. I dealt with and heard alot of bad stuff from teens in my days as a transport driver, but punishment for kids now is taking items away, like SMARTPHONES, MP3s, GAME SYSTEMS, etc. Which to me is sort of a slap in the wrist, but any of the things I heard from those kids and the things they done....would of gotten me killed by my parents. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bhn-podcast/message

We go over the gaming systems and if it really matters to have power? What's up everyone? Welcome back to the to the podcast today. As always, please click subscribe. It's much appreciated. And if you can't please rate me, I think on Apple podcasts, you can rate me there. So today we're just going to talk about how does powerful gaming systems matter? Does it really matter from that perspective, and is the future going to be powerful gaming systems. And I think that's a really interesting topic when you think about it, because you see the systems like the Nintendo Switch, which have decided not to use the power at hand per se. And I think that's a interesting thing, because they've always kind of lagged behind whether it was the Nintendo WI, and then moving on to the next version of that and going to the Nintendo Switch, you did notice that it really did not have improvement. Now, they've always been able to put kind of like this small form factor in where you had the portability, which was always always been really, kind of a neat concept when it comes to gaming is they've kind of taken the portability approach where they no longer produces Gameboy colors, Gameboy advances, the 3ds and all those different technologies, they went ahead and decide to put portability, and also have the plug in docking station into the TV, which has worked very well for Nintendo just from that aspect and giving them that ability to really bring their gaming systems into innovation. Because they've lagged about a generation behind on the technology they're able to focus on, hey, what can I improve here that maybe a lot of companies are not doing. And that has just been phenomenal for them from the switch being at a dock that out, undock that the joy pads, having the detachable joysticks, and then allowing multiplayer through that approach for, for instance, Mario Kart really did that? Well, then Zelda had some innovation, when it came to gameplay and being able to use the different features of that controller slash screen to allow you to do that, and also having the maps on the little controller when you have it on the TV and stuff like that. So that's stuff that has improved the Nintendo Switch tremendously, and really allowed the marketability of that system. So I'm kind of curious what Nintendo is going to do in the future, because they don't have the most powerful system, they've never gone down that road, I think for sure, they're gonna have a lot of HD capability that run natively at 1080 P, no problem, for sure. With this next generation, the question you're going to have is it going to be portable. And I think they'll still go to that portable route, I don't see why they wouldn't. But I would assume they're just going to lag a little bit behind see what's going to happen with the Xbox and the PS five, and go from there, I don't think they're going to jump the gun necessarily, and take on those two systems. So they're going to let that kind of blow over which is going to give them an opportunity to really focus on what kind of hardware do they want to make, and then their launch systems, I can definitely see a Zelda coming into play. Here you have your new Mario Kart, of course, that's given. And using those the travel feature as a major selling point for the system. For instance, being able to play Skyrim on a portable system was such a neat concept. When that first came out, and they've really done a good job of being able to integrate like games, you wouldn't think I'd be able to run outer worlds. For instance, the game I never thought would be able to run a Nintendo Switch is they got a port over there. So they've been doing a really good job of supporting, which was one of their fallouts with the Wii is they weren't able to port a lot of those over and nowadays, they're able to do that. And that's really been highly beneficial for Nintendo to have that ability to get some of those t --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgengame/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nextgengame/support

Tanya X. Short talks with Dirk and David about her design axiom: if the player doesn’t see it, it might not exist. They discuss both some of the games Tanya has worked on, as well as other games that contradict or reinforce this rule. One key point of the discussion is how complex (and costly) systems created by the designers might go completely unnoticed by players if the user interface or the game’s objectives don’t align well with the system.

Hitman & Complex Game Systems In this episode: If there is anything in the world Void loves, it’s a complex system that he can learn and exploit in video games. When he found out about Hitman, he jumped in and loved it so much, he gifted it to Beej just so this episode could exist. While neither of us really likes the “murder” aspect of the game, it doesn’t feel like it’s really violence. We really do both see it as a puzzle game, and we tend to overlook the violence as it’s a means to solve the puzzles presented. Beej isn’t entirely into complex systems like Void. They have to serve a true gameplay purpose. Some games are complicated for the sake of being complicated and add nothing to the experience, but Hitman is the opposite of that. It feels as though you are learning skills and building on them as you progress. The game really helps you learn the systems through its very thorough tutorials--they don’t really feel much like tutorials, either. If you go through them, you’ll learn a pretty decent path to progression that leads into a lot of replayability. Void describes his perfect 4-step program on how to become a professional hitman, starting with Beej’s preferred playstyle: bumble around like an idiot until people die, then run like the wind and hope you don’t get shot. Void’s system is a bit more elegant. Paris is the first fully realized level, and instead of writing a lot about it here, just know that Void loved it so much that he’s barely played any of the other missions in the game. It is also part of a smaller bundle that you can get to essentially try out the game, and it goes on sale on various sellers all the time. So get it. Geeky Offer of the Week Rachel Caine’s Paper and Fire. It’s super good, super duper good. So get it FREE at audibletrial.com/geektogeekcast Weekly Geekery Beej - Started running again, and really working on getting back into shape while freelance work saps lots of free time for a few weeks. Void - Started running, too! The weather in Minnesota gave him a reprieve, so he was able to get outside and moving around. Spring is almost here! / Fire Emblem Heroes (Lunatic Difficulty and the lack of energy you have to play) / Hidden Folks Void also went to the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience, which is a live performance of the music. It was amazing. The first half was not cohesive and felt like a bad fanmade video, but the second half made up for it. The second half used full sequences that built on each other as the music played. It used the Battle of the Bastards and the Great Sept of Baelor scene from the end of the season 6. The Nintendo Switch is almost here! We are just kinda waiting for the Switch (looked at other games but not pulling the trigger on anything). Games like Nioh, For Honor, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7, Conan Exiles, FFXIV are cool, but so much comes out in March-ish: Horizon Zero Dawn, Zelda (and other launch games for the Switch), Mass Effect Andromeda, and Persona 5 (which takes precedence for Void over Zelda Breath of the Wild, which is crazy to Beej!) And some new Zelda, Breath of the Wild info, in case you missed it. No more compass, map autofills with exploration No musical chests Probably won’t get the green clothes until late in the game No more money in the grass We get a jump button!
