Steve Miller music has a depth greater than his career-defiining Greatest Hits 1974-1978 album.  That's what I think.  In 1966, he formed the Steve Miller Blues Band. They backed Chuck Berry on his Live at Fillmore Auditorium album, released that year. In 1968, Miller released the psychedelic blues album, Children of the Future. The Joker, from 1973, found him getting radio airplay, and the title song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Miller followed up with Fly Like an Eagle in 1976 and Book of Dreams in 1977 (The songs were recorded at the same time) with a ton of hit singles, including "Fly Like an Eagle", "Rock'n Me", "Take the Money and Run", "Jet Airliner", and "Jungle Love".  In 1978, Greatest Hits 1974–78 was released, featuring the big hits from those two albums. It has sold 15 million copies as of 2025.  Huge. What was Steve Miller before those albums?  And after?  Classic rock radio plays nearly everything off the Greatest Hits record, but most play little else, and that's not good stewardship of Miller's catalog. Let's see what else the Gangster of Love has recorded, released, and even gotten some radio play with that we love.

Greatest hits episode! This conversation was first shared in 2023, and this is what I had to say about it: One of the things that I've noticed is fairly common in people who come out later in life is just how much of a hurry they are in to experience ALL of the queer shit they've missed out on...And that is what happened to this week's guest, podcaster and voice-over artist Phil Corin, who, upon realising that they may not be heterosexual was on a mission to make their way to the New York City lesbian bar Meow Mix (1996 - 2004). And once they got in to the bar? Well, the gloves were off, but you'll have to listen to the episode to find out the whole story...In this episode we chat all about coming out tactics, lesbian pulp fiction, and.... our complicated feelings about single-gender spaces... Few rock bands have had a greater global impact than Queen. The British act, whose core line-up included Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon, and absolutely iconic frontman Freddie Mercury – emerged from scrappy prog-rock band in the early 1970s, to pop-rock superstars in the late 70s, to arena-rock gods in the 1980s, selling out shows on almost every continent. Queen's Greatest Hits album from 1981 remains the best-selling album in United Kingdom history, and as of late 2024, has spent more than 600 weeks on the United States Billboard 200. Queen's set at 1985's Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium is regarded as one of the greatest rock performances of all time. While Queen's golden age ended with the tragic death of Mercury in 1990, its legacy lives on more than 30 years later, and if there is any justice, will never diminish. So join us as the Great Pop Culture Debate attempts to name the Best Queen Single of all time. Songs discussed: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Don't Stop Me Now,” “Under Pressure,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “We Are the Champions,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Somebody to Love,” “Killer Queen,” “Fat-Bottomed Girls,” “I Want to Break Free,” “Bicycle Race,” “You're My Best Friend,” “I Want It All,” “Flash,” “The Show Must Go On.” Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Derek Mekita and Zack Derby, and special guest John Higgins, archivist and legacy consultant for Sir Elton John, as they discuss and debate 16 of the most revered songs by iconic rock band, Queen. Hello Friends! We've got something a little different on the show today. A few months ago I became very curious about a few stereo mixes I had used in my episode on the Zombies LP Begin Here, where a few tracks had turned up in poor SQ. At that point I assumed this was likely baked into the mix, until I put out a call regarding The World of The Zombies featuring these tracks, only to discover that I was in fact, incorrect. This sent me on a whirlwind of a journey picking up copies of The Zombies, Early Days, The World of The Zombies, Rock Roots & The Collection, in addition to my CD copies of The Singles A's and B's and Greatest Hits (on Audio Fidelity), but came away with only more questions than answers. Why are some tracks mono on some compilations and stereo on others? Why do some discs have studio chatter and some don't? Where did all these later stereo mixes come from that aren't on the '69 & '70 discs? And what is the best source for all of these now they are out of print? After listening to many Zombies LPs and CDs later, as well as a few more, I feel I can confidently give you the definitive answer to all of these questions, as well as the best guide on where to find them, as despite later CD issues, many of these are best heard by far on those original LPs. And for listeners over on the Patreon, I have included my working notes below for each tracklist for this episode. Huge thanks too to Ethan Alexanian for this episode's flatlay artwork. And I think it's a real honour that I get to help amplify the stories, and get the opportunity to really examine my own queerness and how that's shaped who I am.Maybe that's all a little bit too sentimental?Let's get on with what this show is about this week. I am joined by the British comedian, Jacob Truman, who sat down with me to talk about a small-town gay bar that was in the city where he went to University. The kicker? He never had the bravery to step foot in the place. So you've probably already guessed that this one's going to be heavy, but but I promise it's a good one.We talk all about making all of your decisions from a position of fear, being too scared to come out to your identical twin brother, and what it's like to glimpse through that sliver of a window at a life that you aren't brave enough to start for yourself.Do you have any memories of Christopher's, or clubbing from your own scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! Barry's crushing it with a boutique-style practice in New York. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're looking at the clash between music and The Man diving into times when the FBI investigated musicians. In 1956, J. Edgar Hoover's FBI created a covert and legally questionable program called COINTELPRO with the goal of disrupting groups that the Feds considered to be subversive – communists, black nationalists, feminists, anti Vietnam protestors, civil rights activists.  Considering the role that music played in the 60s and 70s, it was only a matter of time before the FBI started investigating rock and roll. Some of the stories are silly. Picture this, it's 1963 and a bunch of FBI agents are hunched over a record player listening to Louie Louie over and over – forwards and backwards – desperately searching for dirty lyrics that didn't exist.  And others are more serious. In 1972, the FBI put John Lenon under surveillance and wiretapped his phone because President Nixon was afraid that his stance on the Vietnam War would influence young voters. The government started proceedings to deport him.  Over the decades, the FBI has investigated or kept tabs on all sorts of musicians. Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison; folk singers Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie; Aretha Franklin, the Monkees, NWA, Charles Mingus, the Insane Clown Posse, and more. There's a lot of ground to cover in this one, but we're up for the challenge. Let's hit it. Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. We had so much positive feedback when this episode went live since it was one of the first times we had a male perspective on the podcast. If you haven't listened yet, it's a great alternate perspective and a great one to pass along to your male partners! Our guest, Eli Weinstein, is a dad of two and a psychotherapist that isn't afraid to give it to people straight. He has an honest, blunt, but always kind style. Eli has been working as a therapist for over eight years and shares some of the struggles he has faced since becoming a dad, including his perspective as a dad going through loss and infertility. As women, we often ask ourselves if dads ever feel the same weight of the mental load. Eli shares his perspective on this and what advice he has for women who are feeling the mental load burden. We cover the topic of postpartum mood disorders in men, what it's like to be the starting player versus the bench warmer in parenthood, and how we have to be able to switch on and off as the preferred parent even when our children aren't as comfortable with it. We hope that by revisiting this episode, you hear a new piece of wisdom to take away. Or, if you're new and hearing this for the first time, we hope you find this episode just as helpful as we did!
