Afford Anything
The Four Kinds of Rich Nobody Counts -- with Sahil Bloom [GREATEST HITS]

Afford Anything

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2026 81:20

#745: A friend once asked Sahil Bloom how often he saw his parents. About once a year, Sahil said. How old are they? Mid-60s. His friend did the math out loud. If they live to 80, you'll see them 15 more times. Sahil was 30, living in California and making great money at a venture fund. Within 45 days of that conversation, he quit his job, sold his house and moved across the country to be near family. He's now managing partner of SRB Ventures, an early-stage fund backing more than 60 startups, and he writes The Curiosity Chronicle, a newsletter read by millions. His book, "The 5 Types of Wealth," is a New York Times bestseller. His framework starts with a scoring problem. Financial wealth gets measured every day. Time, social, mental and physical wealth run in the background, unmeasured, until something forces you to look. You'll get exercises for each. Build an energy calendar that tracks which activities charge you up and which drain you. Map your relationships by how healthy and how frequent they are. Ask what your family and your community need from you. Define what "enough" means in dollars, then write the number down. Sahil also walks through anti-goals — the things you refuse to sacrifice on the way to a goal — and Memento Mori, the Roman habit of keeping your own death in view. Two questions run underneath all of it. Think about how you spent yesterday. Would your 10-year-old self be impressed? Would your 90-year-old self? You don't experience all four seasons in a single day. Sahil argues your life runs on seasons too. Some stretches call for financial growth. Others call for family. Everybody likes to believe they're too smart for marketing. Companies spend billions of dollars putting jingles and slogans in our heads anyway, and this episode puts that theory to the test. Paula Pant, Len Penzo, and OG face off in a rapid-fire game: Doug reads a slightly modified version of a famous advertising slogan, and they have to name the brand. What follows is a genuinely fun, surprisingly competitive round that proves just how deep this stuff sits in all of our brains, whether we like it or not. This one's a Greatest Hits favorite, originally recorded back in 2020, and the game holds up exactly as well today. What You'll Walk Away WithA fast-paced, genuinely fun game you can replay in your own head (or with friends on a road trip) testing how many classic slogans you actually rememberA real discussion on how much advertising quietly shapes what we believe is smart to buy, invest in, or trust with our moneyA candid conversation about pieces of financial advice that used to be gospel and don't hold up anymore, including homeownership as an automatic wealth-builder and the old "100,000 miles and it's time for a new car" ruleA memorable real-world story about how deeply brand loyalty can override even a clearly better financial decisionA reminder that good financial advice isn't about memorizing fixed rules, it's about regularly checking whether those rules still fit your actual lifeWhy This Matters NowIt's easy to assume you make financial decisions purely on logic. But brand recognition, catchy slogans, and decades of repeated marketing messages shape more of our buying and money decisions than most of us would like to admit. Recognizing that influence doesn't mean living in constant suspicion of every ad you see. It means occasionally asking whether a belief about money, homeownership, cars, insurance, college, is something you actually decided, or something you absorbed because you heard it enough times to assume it was true. From the BasementA wildly competitive slogan showdown ends with a last-to-first comeback, plus a genuinely great story about a five-year-old spotting a McDonald's from the top of the Empire State Building at the exact wrong (or right) moment.Resources MentionedAfford Anything podcast — Paula Pant's showLenPenzo.com — Len Penzo's site, including his sister blog, The Persistent ItchStacking Benjamins Field Kit — the all-in-one financial organization tool referenced in the updated introSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What if you do know what you want, but you've just gotten really good at talking yourself out of it? In this Greatest Hits episode, I break down why so many women feel disconnected from their own desires and why “I don't know what I want” is often not the truth. I explain how we learn to prioritize what we should want, what will make other people happy, and what feels safe over what we actually desire. You'll learn why you don't need a perfect reason or justification for wanting something, how to start listening to your own voice again, and why being honest about even small wants is the first step toward creating the life you actually want.Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://schoolofnewfeministthought.com/522Watch episodes over on YouTube: youtube.com/@karaloewentheilcoachingFollow along on Instagram: instagram.com/karaloewentheil/Mentioned in this episode:What's really blocking you from speaking up?You already suspect you hold back from asking for what you want or telling the truth about how you feel. Ned describes being recognized in jail by the leader of the Texas Aryan Brotherhood, who traded him protection and OxyContin for acting lessons using scenes from Lost and Prison Break. The episode then replays Ned's original Dopey appearance: doing heroin with Andy Warhol's circle, living at the Chelsea Hotel alongside Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, eating Burger King with Sid on the day Nancy died, and being in their room hours before her murder. Ned explains why he believes Sid was innocent and identifies the drug dealer he suspected may have been involved. Ned also recounts driving a cab while addicted to heroin, getting slashed during a robbery, buying drugs on the devastated Lower East Side, descending into meth addiction in Long Beach, and knowing dealers who smuggled exotic birds. After nearly 13 years clean, one glass of wine led to a cocaine overdose four days later and another seven-year run. His final arrest, time in jail, and a trip to treatment in Hawaii ultimately gave him another chance—although he arrived with Valium, Vicodin and OxyContin sewn into his clothes. Today, Ned has nearly 20 years clean, works at Transcend NYC, and performs all 19 characters in Lost in Dell Valley. Way More on the New Episode! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Before Mel Robbins became one of the most recognized names in personal development, she was $800,000 in debt, unemployed, and numbing the panic with bourbon most nights by six o'clock. She knew exactly what she needed to do to climb out. Knowing wasn't the problem. Taking the first step was. That gap, between knowing and doing, is exactly what this conversation is about, and it's why Mel's simplest tool, a five-second countdown and a high five in the mirror, has been validated by neuroscience, adopted by veterans' organizations treating PTSD, and linked to real behavior change in ways that go well beyond feel-good advice. This episode originally aired in 2021 and earned its spot in our Greatest Hits lineup because the core idea hasn't aged a day. What You'll Walk Away WithThe five-second rule Mel used to physically interrupt anxiety and get out of bed during her lowest financial pointWhy knowing what to do with your money is almost never the real obstacle, and what actually isThe surprising research linking high-fives among NBA teams to which teams went on to win championshipsWhy so many people feel resistance instead of relief the first time they try this exercise, and what that resistance is actually telling youThe neuroscience behind why a simple physical gesture can interrupt a negative thought spiral more effectively than positive self-talkWhy self-worth tied to a bank balance, a job title, or a number on a scale tends to collapse the moment things go wrongA genuinely surprising story about grief, intuition, and a decision that changed the direction of Mel's entire familyWhy This Matters NowYou probably already know several things you should be doing with your money right now. That's rarely the hard part. The hard part is closing the gap between knowing and doing, especially in moments of stress, shame, or overwhelm, exactly the moments financial setbacks tend to create. Building a habit of small, immediate self-support, showing up for yourself before you've accomplished anything, turns out to be one of the most overlooked tools for actually following through on the financial changes you already know you need to make. From the BasementA headline segment on modern, lower-fee annuities gets a healthy dose of skepticism, and a TikTok "wealth hack" involving margin loans gets thoroughly, hilariously debunked, a good reminder that not everything that sounds clever on social media survives contact with how markets actually work.Resources MentionedThe High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins — Mel's book on the science-backed daily practiceStacking Benjamins Field Kit — the all-in-one financial organization tool referenced in the updated introSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The days are long, they admit, but the years are short—and the time you invest is what your kids carry with them long after the games are over. Max also opens up about a harder question: finding his purpose. After building his life around hockey, he began questioning who he was without it. Candace and Josh walk through identity, a smoothie shop conversation that shifted something in him, and a simple prayer Josh returns to when he needs to hear from God. There's a version of financial advice that lists fifty things you're supposed to be doing at once: build an emergency fund, pay off debt, invest, get life insurance, start a Roth, build an estate plan. All true, all important, and all completely useless without one missing piece: the order. Joe and OG walk through the exact sequence for figuring out what to tackle first, second, and third, so instead of freezing under the weight of everything, you know precisely where to start today. This one's a Stacking Benjamins classic, originally recorded a few years back, and the framework holds up so well it earned a spot in our Greatest Hits lineup unchanged. What You'll Walk Away WithA simple four-quadrant framework for seeing your entire financial picture in one place, instead of overwhelming yourself with fifty scattered tasksWhy cash flow and risk management should almost always come before any long-term goal-setting, no matter how exciting the goals areThe real difference between a strict budget and an "anti-budget," and how to know which one your situation actually calls forWhy debt consolidation can quietly make things worse if the underlying behavior never changesA clear-eyed look at which insurance actually matters most early in your financial life, and which ones get overhypedWhy starting with your tax strategy or investment picks first is almost always backwards, and what should come before itThe blunt case against co-signing a loan for a family member, no matter how good the reason soundsWhy This Matters NowThe instinct to fix everything at once usually backfires, not because the individual advice is wrong, but because doing five things halfway rarely beats doing one thing completely. A clear order of operations replaces that scattered, everything-at-once anxiety with a simple next step, and that clarity alone tends to build more momentum than any single tactic. Whether you're just starting to get organized or you've been meaning to revisit your plan for a while, knowing what actually comes first changes everything that follows. From the BasementA TikTok "hack" involving sneaking into a hotel breakfast buffet to save on groceries becomes the day's cautionary tale, alongside a genuinely unhinged story about an office keg that taught an entire WeWork floor a hard lesson about unlimited free beer.Resources MentionedStacking Benjamins Field Kit — the all-in-one net worth and budgeting tool referenced in the updated introThe 201 Newsletter — deeper dives on topics covered in the show, written by Kevin BaileySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

'Should' is a sketchy word. Not only does it keep us in a place of limbo, somewhere between doing things and not doing things, it also creates a lot of shame around our lack of focus and momentum. Summer's Greatest Hits: Is it Alcohol Use Disorder? Why Your Answer Matters

This week on the Alcohol Minimalist podcast, I'm revisiting one of the most-downloaded episodes from the archives: a conversation about Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), physical dependence, and why labels aren't always the most useful place to start. If you've ever wondered, Do I have a drinking problem? Am I drinking too much? Am I addicted? this episode will help you look at those questions with more clarity and less drama.Alcohol Use Disorder isn't determined simply by how much you drink. It exists on a spectrum from mild to severe and is based on how alcohol is affecting your behavior, health, relationships, and ability to control your drinking. In this episode, we talk about:How Alcohol Use Disorder is definedWhy comparing your drinking to someone else's isn't helpfulThe difference between alcohol misuse, AUD, and physical dependenceWhy withdrawal symptoms require medical guidanceHow labels can sometimes keep us from honestly evaluating our drinkingWhy the better question may be: Is alcohol creating results I actually want in my life?An important safety noteIf you regularly experience withdrawal symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, nausea, racing heart, or seizures when alcohol wears off, seek professional medical guidance before abruptly stopping drinking. Alcohol withdrawal can be serious. You don't need to wait for alcohol to become a severe problem before deciding to change.Pay attention to the data. Look honestly at the results alcohol is creating. Then decide what one small change could move you toward a more peaceful relationship with alcohol.Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. ★ Support this podcast ★

Before the interview, listener Nick tells an insane angel-dust story involving a police checkpoint, the Seven Dwarfs, friends slapping each other unconscious, urinating in a fish tank—and later, shitting his pants while driving a taxi before immediately returning to work. Then Brian opens up about growing up gay in Mississippi, being groomed and sexually assaulted at 15, coming out to his deeply religious mother and turning to cocaine and crystal meth. His addiction eventually leads to homelessness, chemsex, predatory dealers, being filmed while high, a sex sling, IV meth use and a terrifying seven-day psychosis that ends with him restrained in a hospital. Brian explains the complicated relationship between sex, technology and meth addiction—and why returning to a healthy sex life can be one of the hardest parts of recovery. He also describes the unlikely moment involving Taco Bell, Johnnie Walker and a bottle of wine when he finally realized he was a drug addict and asked for help. Years later, Brian returned to the same hospital where he had once been restrained—this time as a treatment professional helping others. He also discusses finding recovery in Narcotics Anonymous and transforming his experiences into the short film Wrath Mercy. On this month's Club Random Classics, Bill Maher revisits one of his most electric sit-downs with comedian Kathy Griffin. The two dig into why Kathy turns everything into a fight, her explosive war with MAGA nation, and what actually happens when the internet decides to cancel you. Kathy breaks down the real story behind that infamous Trump photo, the fallout it caused, and the long list of people who sued her over it. She and Bill also geek out on Joe Rogan's brilliance, revisit the upsetting Kennedy scene from the Marilyn Monroe biopic, and Bill pitches Kathy an entire TV show idea on the spot. Bill Maher sits down with Iranian-American comedian Max Amini, a global comedy powerhouse who sells out shows around the world, for a conversation that swings from religion to revolution. Max opens up about growing up as an “American kid” in Iran, getting bullied at school, and quietly whispering that he was American while classmates chanted “Death to America.” The two trade faith stories: Bill admits he still gets sweaty palms walking into a church, while Max shares his father's Sufi belief that “our religion is love.” They get into Max's complicated relationship with Iran, the Shah's legacy, and what life under the country's religious regime has meant for generations of Iranians. And comedy is never far away, as Max shares his Jay Leno origin story and the best advice he ever received: “It's never too late, but it always could be too early." 'Should' doesn't inspire, it doesn't love, it isn't kind, and it doesn't move us forward to our next best version. Summer's Greatest Hits: How to Drink Like an Alcohol Minimalist

The Alcohol Minimalist Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2026 21:24

What does it actually look like to drink like an Alcohol Minimalist? This week, as part of Summer's Greatest Hits, I'm revisiting one of the most downloaded and foundational episodes of the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast, originally released in September 2022.Being an Alcohol Minimalist isn't just about counting drinks or adding more alcohol-free days to your calendar. It's about changing the way you think about alcohol, planning intentionally, paying attention to how alcohol affects your body, and ultimately creating a relationship with alcohol that feels peaceful—not restrictive, stressful, or out of control. In this episode, I'm sharing practical strategies you can use when you choose to drink, including how alcohol by volume affects what actually counts as a standard drink, why eating before you drink matters, and how slowing down can make it easier to stick to your plan.I also talk about an important distinction that sits at the heart of the Alcohol Minimalist approach: I don't drink alcohol with the intention of getting drunk. If intoxication is the primary reason you want to drink—if alcohol is how you escape, let go, numb out, or create fun—that's worth getting curious about. Your most peaceful relationship with alcohol might look different than someone else's, and for some people, that may ultimately mean choosing not to drink at all.In this episode, you'll learn:Why making a drinking plan ahead of time is an act of empowerment—not punishment or deprivationHow small, 1% improvements can help you build evidence that you are capable of changing your drinking habitsWhy checking the alcohol by volume (ABV) matters, especially with higher-ABV beers like IPAsHow choosing lower-ABV beverages or combining alcoholic and non-alcoholic options can reduce your total alcohol intakeWhy drinking on an empty stomach can cause alcohol to be absorbed more quicklyHow food, mixers, carbonation, caffeine, and other factors may influence your experience with alcoholWhy paying attention to your drinking pace mattersHow alternating alcoholic beverages with water or non-alcoholic drinks can help you slow downWhy you never have to finish the drink simply because it's sitting in front of youThe difference between intentionally including alcohol in your life and intentionally drinking to become intoxicatedWhy “alcohol makes things more fun” is a belief worth questioningHow to recognize when your most peaceful relationship with alcohol might actually be no alcohol at allThe Characteristics of an Alcohol MinimalistIn the episode, I also share the eight characteristics I believe define an Alcohol Minimalist.A Question to ConsiderIf the only reason you want to drink alcohol is because you want to feel drunk, what are you actually asking alcohol to do for you?You don't need to answer that question with judgment. Answer it with curiosity.Because becoming an Alcohol Minimalist isn't about following somebody else's rules for drinking. It's about becoming more intentional, understanding your own patterns, and creating a relationship with alcohol that supports the life you actually want to live.Take something you learned from this episode and put it into action. Changing your drinking habits and creating a peaceful relationship with alcohol is possible.Until next time, choose peace.Resources MentionedDownload Characteristics of an Alcohol Minimalist.Join the private Alcohol Minimalists: Change Your Alcohol Habits Facebook community for ongoing support and practical tips.Learn more about Sunnyside Med and its medication-supported approach to reducing alcohol cravings through the link provided with this episode.Learn more about working with Molly and the resources available for changing your relationship with alcohol at MollyWatts.com.Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week.

LISTEN WITHOUT ADS on PATREON: Buy discount Tickets to DopeyCon only n Patreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Summary On this Dopey Greatest Hits, Dave brings back one of the wildest and most cinematic stories in the show's history: Louie Mandrapilias, author of Flew Too High. First, Dave gives a DopeyCon update and plays a voicemail from Hannah, who manipulated her dog's medical records to build a second Xanax prescription in her pet's name. What began with six bars for an anxious dog eventually became regular prescriptions that Hannah took for herself—until her veterinarian offered to double the dosage and Hannah realized how far the scheme had gone. Then Louie takes us from 1970s New York City to India, Bolivia and Bangkok. A young gay art student arrives in Manhattan, takes MDA, dances at Studio 54, sees Andy Warhol, shoots his first speedball and falls in love with a small-time drug dealer. That relationship sends him to India, where he visits an opium den, joins Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh's ashram and begins an unexpected romance with a German woman. When Louie becomes stranded with an unpaid hotel bill, he tracks down an opium-addicted dealer named Tascar and agrees to smuggle pure heroin back to New York inside a condom wrapped in electrical tape and hidden in his body. At JFK, DEA agents strip-search him but somehow fail to find it. Louie sells half the heroin for $50,000—and quickly becomes addicted to the rest. Next comes a trip to Bolivia for a kilo of pure cocaine. Unable to conceal the package the way he planned, Louie divides it between his cowboy boots and skin-tight jeans. This time, the DEA immediately notices. He is arrested, faces federal charges and avoids prison after his father puts up the family home and helps him receive probation. But even that isn't Louie's bottom. After returning to drugs, he joins an elaborate Bangkok heroin-smuggling operation that hides the shipment inside an airplane lavatory for another courier to retrieve on a domestic leg of the flight. By Christmas 1983, Louie is living in luxury but feels completely dead inside. A seemingly minor argument produces a life-changing realization: “You don't have to live like this.” He returns home, kicks heroin and enters treatment on January 1, 1984. A year later, he tests HIV-positive at a time when the diagnosis was widely considered a death sentence. Louie stays sober, builds a creative life, finds an HIV-positive recovery community in Los Angeles—and remains sober 40 years later. Kiran Krishnan, the Founder of Microbiome Labs, joins me today for the first part of a two-part series on how a healthy microbiome impacts longevity. Kiran is a pure genius and unpacks a lot in this series!  Today, in Part 1, he provides in-depth examples of why gut health translates into full-body health. He gets into what spore-based probiotics are and where they come from, and he also shares about psycho-biotics for mental health. Ways in which spores change the terrain in the gut: They modulate the immune response against other microbes They produce compounds that target certain organisms and modulate certain aspects of the immune response They increase the monitoring, scope, and understanding of the microbial environment for your intestinal lining cells and immune cells  They directly impact the presence of pathogens  About Kiran Krishnan: Kiran Krishnan is trained as a research microbiologist. He left academic research to help bridge the translational gap between research and commercial innovation. He has held leadership roles in international health and wellness companies. He has also founded and scaled research and technology development companies including, most recently, Microbiome Labs, the preeminent microbiome therapeutics company in the US integrative medicine market.  Kiran has published numerous studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals and holds international patents in his name. Kiran is a frequent lecturer at nutritional and medical conferences and is a sought-after expert on the human microbiome for health programs.  Kiran is currently the General Manager of Novozymes OneHealth North America and is a science advisor to 5 other companies in this market.  In this episode: Why does your gut health matter? (4:36) The connection between the gut, the brain, and the immune system. (6:27) Kiran exposes some of the myths surrounding traditional probiotics. (13:07) How the majority of conventional probiotic strains amplify the inflammatory responses in the immune system. (15:02) Why a single stressor first thing in the morning can keep you in an anxious state throughout the day. (20:33) The benefits of bacterial spores. (21:20)  Why most microbes in the environment will not function as probiotics. (22:55) How spores create lasting change in your gut terrain. (24:48) Where the spores come from. Candace has a mom confession: there were days she wanted to quit. Not to stop loving her kids, but to run back and hide in the work where someone actually said, “Good job,” because diapers, meals, and homeschooling rarely come with applause. Bianca Juarez Olthoff can relate, and hopefully you can too. Wanting to quit is normal. The question is what we do next. As Val once told Candace, “You can quit. It's just not going to be today!” In this greatest hits episode, Bianca explains neuroplasticity through the picture of a path worn across a front lawn, the negativity bias that makes hard words stick like Velcro, and the childhood taunt she still hears in dressing rooms. Candace shares how a television show quietly reopened an old eating disorder script and how she recognized it and turned it off. This episode replay is about wholeness: heart, mind, soul, and body as the four legs of one table, along with the honest work of knowing your value. Bianca answers a listener's question about humility, and Candace answers a new question from River, 18, about finding joy in a season that doesn't feel joyful. All aboard for our second last Trains episode! . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). This week on the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast, Molly continues the Summer's Greatest Hits series by revisiting one of the earliest episodes of the show.Last week focused on the science behind alcohol and habit formation. This episode looks at two more powerful influences on your relationship with alcohol: society and the alcohol industry.Drinking is deeply embedded in our culture. We see alcohol connected to celebration, relaxation, friendship, sports, vacations, and nearly every kind of social gathering. Those messages become part of what we unconsciously believe alcohol provides for us.At the same time, alcohol is a massive industry with a financial interest in keeping alcohol attractive, affordable, available—and culturally desirable. The good news? Awareness changes things.Once you begin recognizing the messages you've absorbed about alcohol, you can question them instead of automatically accepting them as truth. In This Episode:Why drinking is treated as the social default while not drinking can still feel unusualHow years of cultural conditioning influence what we believe about alcoholWhy Molly didn't question her own drinking for decades, despite growing up with an alcohol-dependent parentHow advertising and entertainment reinforce positive associations with drinkingWhy the alcohol industry has a vested interest in maintaining alcohol consumptionHow separating facts from cultural and marketing messages gives you more control over your choicesWhy changing your relationship with alcohol requires awareness—not avoiding alcohol for the rest of your lifeKey TakeawayScience, society, and industry can all make changing your drinking habits more challenging—but none of them take away your ability to change. You may always live in a world where alcohol is readily available and socially encouraged. Creating a peaceful relationship with alcohol means learning to see those influences clearly and making conscious decisions based on what you want for your life.Resources Mentioned:Breaking the Bottle Legacy: How to Change Your Drinking Habits and Create a Peaceful Relationship with AlcoholAlcohol Truths: How Much Is Safe?Sunnyside MedLow risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week.

In honor of Ryan Leone's birthday, Dopey returns to one of his most unforgettable appearances—a brutally honest account of creativity, addiction, ambition, relapse, and the struggle to stay alive. Ryan explains how receiving a free gram of cocaine before visiting Tommy Lee's house triggered the worst relapse of his life. Cocaine became crack, depression led him toward self-administered ketamine treatments, and a cycle of steroids, psychedelics, heroin, and fentanyl nearly destroyed his family and career. In the episode's most unbelievable story, Ryan accidentally injects approximately 60 hits of liquid LSD after confusing it with ketamine. He drives through California while hallucinating that his fiancée and children are in the car, encounters a dead body in the road, and eventually wakes up in a teepee-shaped motel room before being hospitalized. Ryan also describes his progression from heroin to fentanyl, multiple overdoses, fighting naked inside a detox, starting methadone, and finally understanding what powerlessness means. Dave and Ryan discuss the dangerous mythology of the drug-addicted artist, Ryan's identification with Hunter S. Thompson, the toll his public persona took on his family, and whether he could remain creative without heroin. A classic Dopey conversation with the late writer, filmmaker, father, and unforgettable friend of the show, Ryan Leone. RIP PALABRA & MORE   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What happens when you read the whole Bible and walk away not liking God? Candace opens Season 17, the first of six “greatest hits” episodes, with her friend Tara-Leigh Cobble from the very first season of the show. This special recap episode closes with a new question from a listener named Kirby, who is grieving the loss of her dog, Bear. Tara-Leigh shares the moment she finished reading Scripture cover to cover while in full-time ministry and realized she did not like the God she had just read about. Then a pastor friend gave her one piece of advice: Read it again, and this time, stop looking for yourself and start looking for God. Along the way, they share how they each came to faith—Candace at twelve and Tara-Leigh at four—and dig into who God actually is. Tara-Leigh unpacks the difference between God the Creator and God the Father, and why the name He chose for Himself is the relational one. He was Father before He was Creator. They also talk about what it means to be a child of God and why His “no” is often His kindest answer. For email updates and to submit a question for a future episode, visit candace.com. Listen without ads on patreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast This week on the replay! Dave revisits Dopey Episode 39, one of the strangest and most influential episodes from the show's early years. Before the replay, he announces his latest attempt at a Dopey Fitness Challenge, shares a DopeyCon update, untangles the increasingly confusing Patreon tiers, reads listener reactions to the infamous Modi episode, and reflects on what this recording revealed about his relationship with Chris. In the original episode, Dave and Chris recover from their disastrous interview with Modi by eating Vietnamese food and chocolate, arguing about whether Dave is a control freak, and repeatedly attempting to sing the Chili's baby-back-ribs jingle. Chris tells the story of traumatizing his epileptic Portuguese water dog, plays an accidentally stolen Howard Stern prank, and recalls buying cocaine from a garbage bag in an abandoned Caribbean house—before lighting his hair on fire. The episode eventually turns toward recovery, connection, and the importance of calling another sober person when things get dark. Then, naturally, Dave and Chris destroy “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” A chaotic early Dopey classic that captures exactly why their partnership worked. All that plus more!     Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Bill Maher welcomes Beatles historian Martin Lewis for a lively, opinionated conversation celebrating the music, myths, and enduring legacy of the greatest band in rock history. Together, they unpack how John Lennon and Paul McCartney built one of history's greatest creative partnerships, challenge the stories fans have been repeating for decades, and revisit the moments that changed music forever. Martin shares behind-the-scenes stories from his years working with Paul McCartney, explains why The Beatles continue to captivate each new generation, and gleefully busts some of the band's most persistent myths. Bill and Martin debate Get Back, A Hard Day's Night, Brian Epstein's influence, John Lennon's songwriting, Paul McCartney's genius, the breakup, and why, sixty years later, everyone still thinks they're the Beatles expert.
