If you enjoy learning about individual stocks and what makes a great company, you won't want to miss this great episode.IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:00:00 - Intro02:58 - What it means for a company to have a wide economic moat.03:53 - Why a wide moat is critical to assess and succeed as an investor.05:03 - Why technology companies offer some of the most attractive opportunities for value investors.09:42 - Why Clay believes that Alphabet and Amazon offer good value in today's market.26:54 - Why Amazon is a “forever hold” for legendary investors like Nick Sleep and Bill Miller.38:58 - What super investors have taken positions in Alphabet and Amazon.43:20 - What makes S&P Global and Sherwin Williams both companies with very strong moats.Disclaimer: Slight discrepancies in the timestamps may occur due to podcast platform differences.BOOKS AND RESOURCESAdam Seessel's book: Where the Money Is.Listen to John Huber chatting about Amazon on Millennial Investing, or watch the video.Security Analysis Newsletter.Check out our takeaways from Warren Buffett's Shareholder Letters. Does a stock market crash affect real estate? We've seen home prices hit record growth over the past two years, with a slight slowdown happening right now. But nothing in the real estate market compares to the stock market selloff that has happened over the past six months. Index funds are down over twenty percent year to date, tech companies are quickly losing valuation, and the stock market doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Is this an opportunity for real estate investors?Instead of letting landlords try to explain how equities work, we brought on Clay Finck from the Millennial Investing podcast to help educate us on what a good (or bad) buy looks like. Clay has spent years learning about value investing from the best stock trader of all time, Warren Buffett. He's designed his portfolio to model the trading techniques Buffett engineered and thinks that this latest dip poses some interesting opportunities for investors of any asset class.Clay talks about recession-resistant stock picks, how to know whether a company is under or over-valued, and why stock investing could be a more passive alternative for the stressed-out landlord. We also have our panel of expert guests give their take on the stock market, how real estate investors should invest, and what their own portfolios look like. If you're heavy on the real estate investing side of things, make sure you listen until the end, as there are some serious stock buying opportunities you may have never thought of.In This Episode We CoverHow the Fed influences the stock market through quantitative easing and rate hikesWhich stocks win during a recession (and which ones to stay away from)Dividend stocks and how to cash flow without owning any real estateDollar-cost averaging as a smarter way to invest even as prices fallWhether or not to put your money into the stock market to save for your next dealWhy some stock investors are ditching equities to make headache-free gains in real estateAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets ForumsBiggerPockets AgentJoin BiggerPockets for FREEOn The MarketJoin the Future of Real Estate Investing with FundriseConnect with Other Investors in the “On The Market” ForumsSubscribe to The “On The Market” YouTube ChannelFind an Investor Friendly Agent in Your AreaDave's BiggerPockets ProfileHenry's BiggerPockets ProfileJames' BiggerPockets ProfileKathy's BiggerPockets ProfileDave's InstagramHenry's InstagramJames' InstagramKathy's InstagramGrab Your Ticket to BPCon 2022Which is Better? 145 Years of Real Estate vs. StocksGet Featured in Our “Crowd Source” Section by Posting on The BiggerPockets Forums“Millennial Investing" PodcastBooks Mentioned in the ShowReal Estate 101 by Michele CaganConnect with Clay:Clay's TwitterCheck the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/on-the-market-19Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself? This episode is another one about the Money category! I interview fellow podcaster Robert Leonard, who you may know from 2 awesome podcasts called Millennial Investing and Real Estate 101.Robert is a fellow Millennial who started out in the finance world and found his way into investing years ago. Eventually, he started trying real estate as well, and since has developed a portfolio from both his real estate and stock holdings (alongside his 2 podcasts) to leave his corporate 9-5 and retire from that world. His strategies seem more passive and long term, as he is a huge fan of Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger, but he explains why that is important instead of chasing stocks and trying to make it rich quick. We talk about why he is like that and also how he analyzes some real estate deals as that has been a requested topic by many! Please leave a like and subscribe and continue to comment your thoughts. BIO: Robert Leonard is the VP of Growth & Innovation at The Investor's Podcast Network, Podcast Host of ‘Real Estate 101' and ‘Millennial Investing,' ex-W2 Accounting and Finance professional, as well as a stock and real estate investor. STORY: When Robert first got into the financial markets, his research into companies he invested in was purely quantitative. He never paid attention to details such as the actual business itself, its prospects, or where the industry was going. His focus was purely on the numbers. This led him to make a couple of bad investments. LEARNING: There is more value or at least equal value in the qualitative factors than there is in the financials. Stop just focusing on intrinsic value and start looking at the whole picture. “There is arguably more value or at least equal value in the qualitative factors of a business than there is in the financials.”Robert Leonard Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/rwleonard/ (Robert Leonard) is the VP of Growth & Innovation at https://www.theinvestorspodcast.com/ (The Investor's Podcast Network), Podcast Host of https://www.theinvestorspodcast.com/real-estate-101/ (‘Real Estate 101') and https://www.theinvestorspodcast.com/millennial-investing/ (‘Millennial Investing,') ex-W2 Accounting and Finance professional, as well as a stock and real estate investor. He earned an MBA in Accounting and Finance, a BSBA in Finance and Economics, and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). Worst investment everWhen Robert first got into the financial markets, his understanding was that value investing was simply following a https://www.investopedia.com/terms/d/dcf.asp (discounted cash flow (DCF) model). So, for the most part, he just relied on the DCF model and made many investments based on quantitative factors. Robert never looked at the actual business itself, its prospects, or where the industry was going. His research was purely quantitative. After making a couple of bad investments, Robert found out that investing is not just about the numbers. It's not always just about the valuation; although that is important and should be considered, it's also about the qualitative aspects of the business. Lessons learnedThere is more value or at least equal value in the qualitative factors of a business than there is in the financials. There's so much value in the qualitative data so pay attention to it. Andrew's takeawaysIt's one thing to pick a stock, and it's another one to https://myworstinvestmentever.com/ep229-nicholas-hinrichsen-if-you-arent-suited-for-picking-stocks-build-a-diversified-portfolio/ (build a good portfolio). You can add value by being steady in your emotions and not let them get the best of you even when the market is going crazy. Stop just focusing on intrinsic value and start looking at the whole picture. Actionable adviceCompletely understand the business you want to invest in and make sure it's within your circle of competency. If you can, use their products or services first. It's worth a little bit of money that you're going to put into seeing how the business works, seeing what their products and services are and their quality. No. 1 goal for the next 12 monthsRobert's number one goal for the next 12 months is to scale his new stock investing software platform to help investors. Kelly Lannan, Fidelity's Vice President of Young Investors, takes us through some of the latest trends and the habits and priorities of younger generations. Kelly believes the recent events of 2020 and 2021 have motivated young people to learn more about trading and investing, but Kelly believes younger investors are often prioritizing the shorter term over the long term when it comes to financial goals. Kelly also notes that a shift in technology has led to the rise of fractional shares trading, which is important because younger generations have told Fidelity via a recent U.S. study, that starting small is their preference. ESG is important to young investors as they want to work with companies that align with their values. However, this does not mean the end return is any less important to young investors. Additionally, Kelly believes that improving financial literacy among young people would lead to opportunities and makes firms more accessible and inclusive. She also shares that many people in younger generations are naturally risk-averse. Recorded on July 8, 2021.
