We all have musicians that we wish everyone else knew about. THAT person who deserves a wider audience, but life circumstances didn't allow for it. Knowledge of that musician seems to be like the secret handshake into a special club. Nick Drake was one of those people until a TV car advertisement that used his music got more people curious....thank goodness. Judee Sill's music is not likely to be used in a car ad. Welcome to episode 116 of See Hear Podcast. When people talk about the musicians of the American West Coast in the early 70s, they talk about Jackson Browne, Carole King, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, CSN or Bonnie Raitt. Few people beyond the faithful have spoken about Judee Sill. This leaves fans of Sill scratching their heads because even among those more well known musicians, they recognise Judee was a master songwriter, orchestrator and arranger. Her early life was one filled with abuse, drug use, prostitution, armed holdups, and prison time. It's amazing to think that the lady who lived that life wrote some of the most beautiful music of the pop era (I'll stand on my soapbox and suggest The Kiss is one of the most beautiful songs ever written – change my mind). She mixed country and Bach and gospel into one beautiful package. Sounds unworkable? Check out her albums and get back to me. A new documentary was released this year about Judee called Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill. This episode of See Hear features guests associated with the film. Kerry, Tim and I chat with one of the two directors of the film, Brian Lindstrom. He describes the process it took to make this great film, working with Judee's relatives, the nature of creativity, what her music has meant to current performers, and a lot more. This could easily have been a dark film (and it has its moments), but it really is a celebration of Judee's life and work. Brian and his co-director Andy Brown have made a wonderful tribute to an artist that will hopefully now find a wider audience. But wait.....there's more. The film's music supervisor is Pat Thomas. Pat has quite a few strings to his bow – drummer, album reissue supervisor, historian and author. He joins me for a discussion on the role of a music supervisor in film and specifically what he did for this documentary. Kerry, Tim and I are hugely grateful for the time Brian and Pat gave to us. Give this a listen, then absorb yourself in the albums of Judee Sill. As of May 2024, the film is streaming on Prime, in North America only (grrrr), but I am informed that moves are being made to get a wider distribution for the film....and of course you can always get the DVD anywhere in the world. LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL is a documentary detailing the life and music of '70s singer-songwriter Judee Sill using as much of her own voice as possible. This could devolve into another talking-heads affair but having Judee's voice narrate and her art take animated flight on screen gives the movie an authenticity and more intimate connection to its subject. Judee was never the type of person to cruise behind her producers, anyway. She always had to have a hand in every affair. Makes sense she'd end up doing so almost 50 years after her death. --- Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod Follow The Movies on Goodpods! --- Intro Music: "Cold Open" - Marlowe Outro Music: "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" - Judee Sill --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

Alhoewel; randfiguur? Wellicht dacht David daar anders over. …

A new documentary is bringing a lost yet influential music star back into the spotlight. In the early 1970s singer-songwriter Judee Sill overcame drug addiction, time in prison, and the absence of her family, to become a pop recording artist. Signed to David Geffen's influential record label, Sill was all set for stardom but it never fully arrived. Though her music was loved by a large core of fans and especially by fellow musicians, she never found chart success and fell into obscurity before dying tragically young in 1979. Documentarians Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom found Judee's music and have spent the past decade working on bringing her legend back to life. They've done that with the new brilliant documentary Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill. Brian and Andy spoke with Wake Up Tri-Counties about the documentary on Tuesday morning.

Kinnebak…

Broken Buttons: Buried Treasure Music Stories

In this episode, her self-titled debut was the first official release on David Geffen's star-making Asylum Records. While she crafted some of the most beautifully bizarre music of the 70s singer-songwriter era, her work is still largely unknown. This episode is all about Judee Sill. The incredible music she made and the sad, tragic—at times, shocking and unbelievable— life she led. The first part of the episode tells Judee's story and the second part breaks down her influences, who she influenced and what's happening with her music today. For fans of Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Brian Wilson, Bach, the Laurel Canyon music scene, 70s singer-songwriters. Apologies for the oversight and I cover it at the top of today's show.   I then interpret lots of dreams sent in by listeners.   Dream: Boyfriend in a bathtub Liz's dream asks her to not hold back on positive changes, for people who should really be out of your life. This one is actually a vision. Debbie can telepathically leave her body and travel to the astral plane. She is asked to practice this.   Dream: Accountant compliments my writing Debbie is told to write. It couldn't be an easier dream to interpret.   Dream: Yes, you have a book deal This is Debbie's earliest dream and it ties all 3 together. She is told to write a book. Welcome to episode 75 of Love That Album.   I’m joined by my friend and fellow presenter from the See Hear podcast, Mr Bernard Stickwell to discuss the legacy of the songwriter, musician, orchestrator and singer, Judee Sill. In the early 1970s Judee gave the world two magnificent records - her eponymous debut and its follow up Heart Food. In an era when songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Warren Zevon (who covered one of Judee's songs) were revered, and the American West Coast sound was popular, it seems bizarre that Judee’s artistic triumphs were commercial failures. The lack of commercial success, however, was just another disappointment in a life full of hardship. Bernie and I discuss her life’s story as well as what makes the music so wonderful. If you haven’t caught up with her repertoire yet, Bernie and I urge you to get these two albums. Thank us later.   Eric Reanimator returns for another great Album I Love segment to discuss a compilation by country songwriter (and actor) Hoyt Axton.   You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com.au     Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum.     If you’d consider writing an iTunes review or recommending the show to a friend, I’d be immensely grateful.

I'm so pleased to have my beloved teacher, Judee Gee, returning to The Numinous Podcast this week. We're talking about Yin + Yang, Shiva + Shakti, tantra, and the Apostle to the Apostles, Mary Magdalene. Juicy, juicy stuff! In this conversation, Judee and I share our deep gratitude for the wonderful book by Cynthia Bourgeault, The Meaning of Mary Magdalene. That book truly changed my life. I also mention my pilgrimage to La Grotte de la Sainte Baume, the grotto where Mary Magdalene lived out her days as a hermitesse. I can't wait to one day take Judee's Tantric Woman workshop. I believe she is doing a North American tour in 2015 so if you'd like to bring her to your city, you should send her an email ASAP! If you don't already own it, I highly, highly recommend Judee's book, Intuition: Awakening Your Inner Guide. Trained as an intuitive psychic, breath therapist and teacher of alternative healing methods in Australia and the USA in the early 1980's, Judee settled in France in 1988 where she created The Intuition School (L'Ecole de l'Intuition). From 1988 to 2000 she taught her intuition development program in several regions throughout France and also published Intuition: Awakening Your Inner Guide, during that period. Judee is the past President (1998–2001) of the International Breathwork Foundation and a founding member (2000) of the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance, where she currently serves on the Board of Directors.
