Of the many rallies at the state Capitol on Tuesday March 4, two contrasting ones stand out. The first involved hundreds of striking correction officers and their supporters standing in front of the capitol calling for better working conditions in the state's prisons, starting with more staffing, less mandatory overtime, and the repeal of the HALT act which restricts the use of solitary confinement. While the Governor thought that a deal to end the illegal wildcat strike had been reached by March 7, including reviewing potential changes to the Halt Act, the union blocked it on the grounds that they had not been consulted. On Tuesday inside the Capitol, prison reform advocates called to enact several bills in response to the recent killings of two inmates by upstate correction officers – Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi. We hear from several state legislators – Assemblymembers Latrice Walker, Eddie Gibbs, and Anne Kelles, and Senator Julia Salazar. This was Mark Dunlea for the Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Senator Julia Salazar of NY-18 was elected in 2018 after winning an insurgent, grassroots campaign powered by NYC-DSA as well as many movement allies. Three years later, she's serving her second term in Albany as the chair of the Women's Issues Committee and the chair of the Crime Victims, Crime, and Corrections Committee. On tonight's show, we speak with Senator Salazar as well as her Organizing Director and fellow NYC-DSA member, Ramon Pebenito. Dismantling the carceral system requires all of us to exercise our power to slow, stop, or mitigate the harms of police and prisons, or to throw “sand in the gears” of the machine of bureaucratic state violence wherever we are. In this episode, we hear from Senator Salazar on her surprise visits to NY State correctional facilities and from Ramon on over-policing in New York's district 18. You can find Senator Salazar on Twitter @SalazarSenate or visit her official website: https://www.nysenate.gov/senators/julia-salazar.
Andrew Cuomo has been mired in scandal for weeks, for actions that, in some cases, date back years. To what extent has the governor’s bullying been hiding in plain sight? On Episode 28 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene look into the long history of Cuomo’s coercive approach to state politics, why he’s so keen to hang onto his seat in the face of widespread censure, and how much his character and governance style can be explained by his relationship to his father, Mario Cuomo. Guests include Rebecca Traister, who reported on the governor’s toxic workplace for New York Magazine; Ross Barkan, the author of a forthcoming book about the governor; and Julia Salazar, a state senator for New York’s 18th district. Our society is in economic and social crisis, and as socialists, we know that the roots of this crisis spread far beyond the immediate cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. Deliberate policy decisions by our leadership at all levels have led to a widening gap between the wealthy and the poor, crumbling social and physical infrastructure, an education system designed to reinforce the dominance of the capitalist class, a healthcare system designed to extract profit from human suffering, and a mass incarceration system that imprisons and brutalizes tens of thousands. In this episode, RPM's own Jack Devine interviews State Senator and NYC-DSA member Julia Salazar about the state budget process and how New York State can lead the charge against 50 years of harmful neoliberal austerity. We also speak to Emmaline Bennet of Columbia YDSA about the current tuition strike at Columbia and the fight for democratized universities dedicated to the pursuit of human knowledge over private profits. Finally, because it's COVID winter, Desiree Frias will walk us all through how to help eligible people, especially elders, sign up for a vaccine appointment through the city's fiendishly difficult online portals. Times are tough, but we have a world to win.https://taxtherichnys.com/https://bit.ly/tuition-strike-fundhttps://bit.ly/tuition-strike-letterhttps://nycvaccinelist.comTo give to the station, please call (516) 620-3602 or go to wbai.org. Who is the 25-year-old indigenous woman that has the California Democratic Party so scared that they've poured over $100,000 into her opponent's campaign just this month? Meet Jackie Fielder, who is challenging state Senator Scott Wiener from the left in San Francisco's District 11. Fielder shares with us how the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline shaped her political trajectory, as well as how later battles in San Francisco against police misuse of Tasers and for taxing the rich to help ameliorate homelessness -- two issues on which she and Wiener disagreed -- helped spark her campaign. Fielder considers Julia Salazar, who won a seat in the New York state Senate in 2018 at age 27, a major inspiration. But this year we're seeing this story all over. Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman in Congress. A whole team of socialists joining Salazar in the New York statehouse. Unapologetic leftists are challenging Democrats -- and winning. So can Fielder unseat Wiener, whose war chest includes contributions from deep-pocketed developers, tech CEOs and police unions? The California Democratic establishment appears to be taking her seriously, injecting Wiener's campaign with over $105,000 in September. Wiener had been avoiding a debate for months, but it appears that in these final weeks his hand is being forced as well. They'll spar on the issues on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. Find out how to stream it here. Max & Murphy Podcast: State Senator Michael Gianaris & Senator-Elect Julia Salazar by Max & Murphy
Julia Salazar ran an insurgent primary campaign against a corporate incumbent and will soon be inaugurated as New York's only democratic socialist state senator.
This episode's guests are Margaret Corvid, who recently won a city council race in Plymouth, England, and Julia Salazar, who just won the Democratic primary for New York state senate in Brooklyn.
Saikat Chakrabarti, Julia Salazar, Lee Carter, Bhaskar Sunkara The 2016 breakthrough of Bernie Sanders – and the more recent success of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – has put the American left in its strongest position for decades. Join a panel of American socialists to discuss the potential of this growing movement, what demands it should be making, and the obstacles it faces in making socialism mainstream in America.
Julia Balcon and a sex worker who goes by "Eve," talk to me about how state senator Julia Salazar became the first candidate in U.S. history to win a state race as a very public sex worker advocate. Plus we talk to Julia on why and how she chose to incorporate sex work decriminalization into her platform. And Julia shares her thoughts on the Democratic Primaries.
The gang is joined by writer David Klion (@DavidKlion) to talk New York's Democratic primaries, the socialist read on Trump/Russia, and the need for a left internationalism. The various reactions to Julia Salazar's NY State Senate win and what it means when the libs think they have to be nice to us. We all drag the fuck out of hasbara hack Bari Weiss, of whose bad takes Sean cannot get enough. Jamie and Sean get divorced x 2. What, if anything, can the left take away from the Trump/Russia story? David breaks it down with help from comrades Bill Maher and Rachel Maddow. Jamie goes off on a cowardly Harrington-ite for his smarmy, disingenuous, red-baiting, left-punching op-ed. International super-friends Bernie and Yanis spit hot bars on foreign policy. All this, plus a new commie karaoke! Here we discuss the controversies around Andrew Cuomo, the IDC in the New York State Senate, and the successful Julia Salazar campaign. Then at about 37:00, we turn to the self-harming North Carolina legislature, and why they passed a pro-flooding bill six years ago.
With recent primary election wins by candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, James Thompson, Julia Salazar and others, the terms “socialist” and “democratic socialist” are everywhere. Media outlets across the political spectrum - from The Washington Post andBusiness Insider to NPR and MSNBC to Jacobin - have rushed to publish explainer articles, demystifying the tenets of socialism and its variations for a mass American audience. But one thing missing from the bulk of these explainers – many of them written by high-profile Democratic Socialists themselves - is a robust account of foreign policy and the role America’s massive imperial footprint would play in any future Democratic Socialist America. Instead, descriptions of socialism stick primarily to domestic issues. Similarly, the wave of recent democratic socialist explainers are quick to distance their brand of Democratic Party-friendly socialism with the scary brand in the Global South, namely that of Venezuela. Highlighting instead the virtues of white-majority countries like Sweden and Denmark, many socialist whisperers dismiss out of hand the Bolivarian Revolution with the dreaded “authoritarian” label. In this episode, we discuss the pros and cons of this approach and how to know the difference between good faith critiques of socialist systems in the global south and quick and cheap fetishizing of Scandinavian countries – none of which have had to grapple with the complexities of colonialism. We are joined by two guests: Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies and Shireen Al-Adeimi, assistant professor of education at Michigan State University.
Umar Lee discusses #CaneloGGG, #STL name change, Botham Jean, Julia Salazar in New York, liars, authenticity, and the recent protest of Deray McKesson during a presentation of his new book at Left Bank Books.

Hurricane Florence makes landfall near Wilmington, NC as a Category 1 hurricane. All the climate change signals are there as the slow, huge storm dumps dozens of inches of rain. Trump administration transferred nearly $10 million from FEMA to ICE. Documents also show that the Coast Guard will also be losing at least $14 million that will go to ICE. Trump calls Puerto Rico death toll a democratic party political tactic. On the other side of the country, California Gov. The announcement comes on the heels of recent state legislation committing California’s electrical grid to 100 percent clean energy by the same date. Jarret Murphy gets on the phone with one of the co-authors of a report in the Intercept about a recently uncovered collaboration between IBM and the NYPD to develop so-called counterterrorism surveillance technology. Then, Murphy sits down with North Brooklyn politician, Nick Rizzo to discuss Julia Salazar's bid for State Senate and the most recent controversies rocking her campaign.
After Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's primary upset against a long-time Democrat incumbent, Julia Salazar's Democratic Socialist campaign for State Senate gained a lot of steam. As a first-time candidate up against another longtime incumbent, Salazar's biography was a huge part of her appeal to voters in a north Brooklyn district that appeared open to her progressive politics. Now, a few items in this biography appear to have been false. Harry Siegel, Daily News columnist, spoke with WNYC's Richard Hake about what this means for the Democratic Socialists of America.

Bonus chat with Julia on her political evolution https://www.patreon.com/posts/21319406 I talk to Julia Salazar, a DSA candidate running against Martin Dilan, the state senator in New York's 18th District. Salazar has been compared to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz for being a young, Latina, DSA member and first time candidate taking on the Democratic Machine. Julia talks to me about the difference between her and Dilan and addresses his bad record on housing and tenants rights, which the media almost entirely ignored until a Gothamist piece published this week which exposed that Dilan takes more money from the real estate industry than all but one Democratic state senator. And I talk to Ted Hamm about Letitia James, who is running for Attorney General of NY against friend-of-the-show and anti corruption crusader Zephyr Teachout. Hamm talks about James' troubling support of former Brooklyn DA Charles J. Hynes

As a fellow Yale law grad, Khanna "knows the type" of person Kavanaugh is: "he's a partisan hack, careerist, who sucks up to people in power. it's the worst kind of elitism." We also talk about the disgusting deputy DA who called Maxine Waters a "loud-mother c*** and said, "you would think someone would have shot this bitch by now." This week's super series on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's victory and the future of left politics continues with Julia Salazar, a DSA member running for a Brooklyn state Senate in New York's District 18. Salazar's campaign worked hard for Ocasio-Cortez; now, Ocasio-Cortez's team is returning the favor. Recently, The New York Daily News wondered if Salazar might be the new Ocasio-Cortez. Ocasio-Cortez responded: Salazar "isn’t the next me, she’s the first HER." Indeed, Salazar has her own story to tell. She immigrated from Colombia as a child, and came of age as a young activist by organizing a rent strike in her Harlem building. She describes herself as a democratic socialist, which she defines as recognizing "the capitalist system as being inherently oppressive and actively working to dismantle it and to empower the working class and the marginalized in our society." This is the latest interview in this week's Ocasio-Cortez super series, which has already included interviews with Ocasio-Cortez and Cynthia Nixon.
