This is Part 2 of a conversation that Dominique and I had together at the beginning of February. I've been sharing a remarkable series of videos from one of my on-line clients, Muna Clough. In the previous episode I described the videos Muna sent me and the remarkable changes that occurred over a six day period. I shared Muna's videos with my monthly coaching session group. The videos sparked a fascinating discussion about the power of tiny movements. We're joined by Muna Clough, Anita Schnee, and Lucy Butler. Anita is a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Lucy manages the River Haven Animal Sanctuary in Rhode Island. Both have been frequent guests on this podcast.

We get a really great question for “Ask the L” about corners, and as usual, Aviva makes it so much more digestible! We have a word from Purina, who is the sponsor of this month's podcast. In this episode, Stephany and Aviva chat with Suzanne DeStefano, a Pennsylvania based Feldenkrais practitioner and dressage rider/trainer. We delve into the mysterious question of “what IS Feldenkrais?” and get some examples of how it can help people, both in and out of the saddle. We discuss the founder, Moishe Feldenkrais, and how he came to develop this interesting way of helping people get more in touch with their bodies. We got to hear how Suzanne's personal journey in riding led her to discovering this modality, and how it has shaped both her riding and her practice with other riders. It is an interesting practice, and one that some of our listeners might find valuable if they are struggling with their own riding journey. Episode 289 Michaela Hempen and Anita Schnee Feldenkrais Work Pt 3: The Role of Visualization in Riding Instruction For the past ten years Michaela has been studying with a Feldenkrais Practitioner, Nathalie Van Cauwenberghe. In the previous episodes Michaela described some of the riding challenges which the Feldenkrais work has helped her to solve. Nathalie does not speak English well enough to participate in the podcast, so I invited Anita Schnee to join us. Anita is also a Feldenkrais Practitioner so we will be drawing on her expertise as we continue with this conversation. In this episode we begin with a discussion of visualizations and the use of metaphors. Riding and the Feldenkrais™ work are both kinesthetic experiences. Translating what you feel into words can be a struggle, especially when you want those words to function as instructions. The use of visualizations helps to create translations.

This week we're continuing our conversation with Anita Schnee and Michaela Hempen. Michaela has been our guest on this podcast many times. She's talked to us about the research project she did on cribbing, about single subject design, and more recently about how animal welfare is assessed. When it comes to horses Michaela and I share a love of beautiful movement, so she also joined us when we talked with Anja Beran, the classical rider whose work inspires both of us. For the past ten years Michaela has been studying with a Feldenkrais™ Practitioner, Nathalie Van Cauwenberghe. In last week's episode Michaela described the riding challenge Anja's work poses. Anja has told her that in order to ride well you need to stabilize your torso while remaining loose in the rest of your body. With Nathalie's help, Michaela has been figuring out how to turn these words into a meaningful reality. Nathalie does not speak English well enough to participate in the podcast, so I invited Anita Schnee to join us. Anita is also a Feldenkrais™ Practitioner so we will be drawing on her expertise as we continue with this conversation. The goal is to ride well. Last week I ended with a description of the changes I see in horse handler teams when the handler learns to lift through their sternum. I left you with that image to enjoy. We'll pick up again at that point in the conversation.

Expand Your Ability: Embodiment, Somatics, and Feldenkrais

Feldenkrais Practitioner, musician and storyteller David Kaetz says that many of us get disembodied from our voice from a young age. It's common and normal for kids to make sounds as they explore and play, until they get the message that they should be quiet. Is this a message you've internalized? How playful with your voice are youOne of my main motivators in exploring Feldenkrais and the bodymind connection comes from my own pain and tension surrounding my voice. I could tell it was related to self-use and anxiety and it was clearly manifesting as a physical issue. My voice troubles started in my teen years and followed me into my twenties. While I'm doing better than ever, I am still learning. I am learning how to be more expressive, more relaxed, and more full-bodied when I speak. On today's episode I reflect on my recent learnings around embodying the voice. I've had two profound mentors: One is a man named Nicholas that I met at the Minnesota Men's Conference. Dominique is new to the Feldenkrais work so she asked questions I am sure many of you must have. So before Anita and I could get too carried away into the poetry of this work, Dominique kept us grounded in some practical questions that I think contribute very much to a basic understanding of the method.

If you have ever taken a riding lesson, you've probably experienced how confusing the instructions can be. You're being told to: “fill your back, push with your seat - no not like that, bear down, lift up, lean forward, lean back!” You can be forgiven if you feel like shouting back: “Make up your mind! I can't do both at the same time!” Riding instruction is a challenge because we are attempting to translate into words physical actions. And my starting point, what works well for me probably isn't your starting point. Generalities are useful, but at the end of the day, instruction needs to be a study of one. It works best when it is tailored to each individual. My clinics almost always include opportunities to explore handling and riding details without the horses being present. You slide down lead ropes that are being held by “human horses”. Another rider gives you direct feedback which means your horse is spared some of your learning curve. Various body awareness lessons let handlers make discoveries about how best to organize their own balance. Through this process we can create verbal translations for desired physical changes. Now when the instructor tells you to “fill your back”, you aren't left thinking: “fill it with what!?” Instead you know how to translate this phrase into a meaningful physical response. I originally saw this style of teaching being used in the 1980s by two innovators who helped bring riding instruction and horse training into the modern world. I'm talking about Sally Swift, the developer of Centered Riding and Linda Tellington-Jones, the founder of TTEAM (the Tellington-Jones Equine Awareness Method). In this week's episode we're going to use a look back at their work to introduce a new series on the Feldenkrais™ work. Next week we'll be joined by Anita Schnee. Anita is a Feldenkrais™ Practitioner who is very familiar with my work. She'll be sharing a Feldenkrais™ Awareness Through Movement lesson with us so you will have an opportunity to experience the Feldenkrais™ work directly. This look back at the work of two great innovators gives us a starting point for the conversation that we'll begin in next week's episode.

Jeremy is here to discuss why we would benefit from considering the whole self during singing and teaching singing, and what that even means. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fascia is a pre-tensioned continua in our body, tensioning everything into place. It is the architecture for everything in our body.  It surrounds and is throughout each muscle. Fascia is non-Newtonian - it stiffens with force, and is fluidic and compliant without it. Muscles are fast-acting contractile proteins that push & pull on the fascia within and around them.  Muscle tissues themselves aren't actually very strong, but the fascia that muscles live within has the tensile strength of steel. Muscle and fascia work in a unified myofascial system. As a curious child, Sarah Baumert, experimented with the yoga postures she found in a book. She found joy in how the postures stimulated intense energy or offered calm. She was far more comfortable with expressing with her body than her words and became a professional dancer. Jae's interest in running technique was sparked when, as a professional dancer, she was asked to perform choreography that included sustained running in large, outdoor environments. Frustrated by how difficult and uncomfortable running felt, she began to study running technique and use the Feldenkrais Professional Training Program she was enrolled in as a laboratory to discover how to coordinate her movements so that running felt comfortable, easy, and enjoyable. Eventually, realizing she'd come to prefer running to dancing, and also that the changes in movement that had made the difference to her running were not being taught, discussed, or researched elsewhere, she retired from dancing and launched The Balanced Runner. Jae has been a member of the Feldenkrais Guild of North America since 1999 and the United Kingdom since 2011 and was an ACE-certified personal trainer from 1999-2012.  She graduated from Williams College in 1992 where she majored in literary studies and cross-enrolled at Bennington College to study modern dance. Working as a professional dancer from 1992-2003, she performed with a number of New York City-based companies, and at the time of her retirement from dance in 2003 she was a senior company member of Sarah Skaggs Dance. All too often we focus on what's wrong and trying to find "the answers" to fix everything. Instead, Nicole's work is based on emphasizing that you are already whole. Her practice is largely influenced by the work of Kathy Kain, Peter Levine, Moshe Feldenkrais, and Chris Dierkes. As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner®️, Feldenkrais Practitioner®️, and yoga teacher, her knowledge of the body, mind, and soul greatly influences how she supports others from a very intuitive, energetic, and somatic place. As someone who both values and sees self-exploration, healing, and spiritual practice as being vital for transformation, her intention is to support others in gaining greater access to the pieces that are blocking them from feeling more alive and whole. Time in nature, connection with friends and family, and movement of all kinds are important to her and you'll often find her out on walks with her dog, surfing, mountain biking, SUP'ing, and enjoying people's company, usually accompanied by delicious food! Golden Nuggets From This Episode: ✨ “Nervous System is the communication between our brain and our body and our body and our brain.” ✨ “The job of the autonomic nervous system is to really give messages to the brain and the body around "Am I safe" or "Do I need to respond to danger".” ✨ “Sometimes we're looking for a more complicated answers on what to do, but it's pretty amazing just pause and be with your experience.” ✨ “Our emotions, our experiences are all just energy in motion, so when we learn to pause and support and hold what is we've actually healed a layer or an aspect of our trauma that's causing us to respond and be triggered by these certain situations.” ✨ “There is nothing to fix and you're already whole.” ✨ “Not every tool needs to work for you.” ✨ “It is important to recognize that trauma isn't about the event, trauma is about how we didn't get to complete our response to the event.” ✨ “Shut down happens when everything becomes too much. We freeze, we put the brakes on everything and we don't feel any of that fight flee energy or that alert energy.” ✨ “Survival patterns are ways to protect ourselves from experiencing the trauma.” ✨ “The more we untangle the ways we've learned to survive through our patterns, and the ways we're stuck in our response cycle, the more we can access who we really are.” ✨ “We are designed to be in the community. We are designed to experience a sense of belonging, togetherness, unity, and working as a team to contribute, evolve, and move through this life as a human. ” ✨ “Trauma causes a disconnect from self and from others.” ✨ “The more we can recognize what it feels like to be held in the space of "I'm here with you", "I see you". The more we can experience that from other people, the more we can also hold that for other people. The more intern we all benefit from. Tara Eden, Feldenkrais Practitioner, began her Somatic Movement Project as a child and continued her innate life journey as an observer and student of the human condition. She travelled an intense route of self-expression via the heat and power of yoga, striving to overcome frustration, anxieties and burnout – society's common symptoms of chronic disconnection to self in a saturated life chasing improvement, betterment and existential change. Tara explains how we have tried to form and conform ourselves to not only yoga but society's poses and postures without reference to the individual self. Moving from the frenzied pace of New York to exploring a spiritual path in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Tara found personal vulnerabilities were exposed in the energetic exchange of Thai massage. Leading herself with this newfound “feeling” and beginning to differentiate uncomfortable choice points led to the discovery of limitations in yoga for options of choice, rest and adaptation. Tara transitioned into a Feldenkrais immersion of authenticity and acceptance of self, and now offers this window to others wanting to see themselves clearly, discover healthier self-use, empowerment to trust and learn from their own embodied experience and to discover a unique inner calm, stillness and self-knowing that arrives spontaneously in an embodied state change. Tara suggests strategies to have this container of Feldenkrais for yourself, as a structure and a lens for being able to support yourself and other people in their authentic experience of themselves, to literally and metaphorically “come to the floor” and reconnect with themselves. “What I love about running, and what I love even more about running than I ever loved about dancing, is how human it is. It's a fundamental human gait: We crawl, we walk, we run, technically, apparently, skipping is also another gait, and so when you get better at it, for myself, I just felt more human. At that point in my life already, I had been through so many movement methods in trying to get myself together as a dancer: so much yoga, Klein technique, Gyrotonics, Alexander, Trager, everything that was out there I had done, practically, that I could find, and that was a lot. It all had effects, gave me different sensations. There's a certain way that I feel after I do yoga, but after I run, I realize I feel more human, as in a member of my species—it's really pronounced, really profound—and I really love working with that more than anything else.” Jae Gruenke is a highly sought-after expert on running form and technique. She's also a Feldenkrais Practitioner, founder of The Balanced Runner, and has helped countless runners from beginners to Olympians improve their form and performance since 2003. I've been following Jae's work for a little while now and recently found out that she doesn't live far from me, so we sat down at a local park and had a conversation that I think you'll really enjoy and take a lot away from. We talked about what it is that Jae does exactly and how she uses the Feldenkrais Method of Movement Education to help runners with their technique. She told me how she got into running after years as a professional dancer and how solving her own problems led her to working with others who were navigating similar issues. We discussed what mainstream publications miss when it comes to running technique, common places where runners go wrong, and what she considers to be the six elements of good form. We also got into cadence, the influence of footwear, the analyses she does on the elite fields in major races, and a lot more. John Tarr studied Trombone Performance (Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees) in the USA. While working as a freelance musician, he attended a Feldenkrais Method (FM) workshop for musicians and realized that the FM held great potential for improving and maintaining musicians’ health. At first he was interested in working with preventing injuries but soon discovered that the FM also had much to offer in the way of enhancing performance. After completing a FM teacher training program, John began private practice in 1996. Through his wide range of experience, he has been able to help many students find meaningful solutions for a wide variety of problems and difficulties. John has also taught weekly group classes (Awareness Through Movement) since 1996 and has presented the FM to music schools and institutions in Europe and the USA. In 2004, he self-published a series of FM lessons specifically for musicians entitled, “The Dynamic Musician Series: Dynamic Posture and Breath, Volume 1” and Volume 2 in 2007. In 2006, he became an Assistant trainer and has since been teaching in various Feldenkrais Teacher Training Programs as well as teaching advanced training for practitioners in Europe and the USA. Joan Cerio welcomes authors Allen David Reed and Tahnee Woolf who talk about their book, Introducing the Ten Terrains of Consciousness. The Ten Terrains of Consciousness Model maps our personal and societal evolution from the most basic, fear-based, survival consciousness to the most expanded, love-based, Unity consciousness, along a continuum of growth and expansion, and without any judgment about one stage being better than another. The Ten Terrains Model helps you understand yourself better. By discovering which specific Terrain you are at right now, you can understand why you see the world the way you do, better understand your relationships with other people: why you get along with some, can’t seem to see eye to eye with others, and will also help you better understand our world. By observing the Terrains of our leaders and politicians and the "Prevailing Terrain" in the Western World, you will be able to grasp why our planet is in the state it is in. American-born Allen David Reed is a modern Renaissance Man with a background in architecture, technology, science, philosophy, history, divination and shamanism. Australian Tahnee Woolf is an inspiring visionary who has been a lawyer, Oxford scholar, screenwriter, radio host, coach, facilitator and Feldenkrais Practitioner. Together they are the co-creators of the Ten Terrains Of Consciousness, a groundbreaking new model that helps you understand yourself, other people, and our world. Allen and Tahnee are a dynamic duo in interviews, beautifully balancing masculine and feminine, political and personal, gravitas and humor. http://TenTerrains.com   https://www.facebook.com/tenterrains  https://www.YouTube.com/c/tenterrains

We also got into the topic of consent and horses, a particularly important and pertinent conversation in our current changing world. Such a worthwhile exploration - I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!  As a Tellington TTouch® Equine Practitioner and a Feldenkrais® Practitioner living in Deep Bay on Vancouver Island, Violet is fascinated with helping people and animals open up movement freedom, and get stuck stuff - unstuck.  She enjoys combining science with practical experience and the "feel" of doing.
