Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Friday, Jan. 10, 2025. A national study ranks West Virginia as the state with the highest inbound migration in 2024…a local businesswoman earns a mini-MBA through a crash course offered through a Goldman-Sachs WV cohort…and discover why the Canaan Valley region is referred to as the snow bowl…on today's daily304. #1 – From YAHOO – If you're thinking about moving to West Virginia, you'd be in good company. According to the 48th Annual National Movers Study, West Virginia was the state with the highest percentage of inbound migration (66%) last year among states experiencing more than 250 moves with United Van Lines. The Mountain State jumped nine spots on this year's inbound list, compared to the 2023 National Movers Study. The top motivations for moves to the state included wanting to be closer to family (35%) and a new job/company transfer (31%). Located in the Appalachian region, West Virginia is known for its range of outdoor activities, affordable housing and lower cost of living compared to the national average. BridgeValley Community & Technical College ran the program's with modules on themes including marketing, accounting and operations.  Over 111,000 small business owners like Waybright account for 98.8% of the state's businesses and employ nearly half of the state's workforce.  Read more: https://wvdn.com/150933/?es_id=0798aeaeac   #3 – From WV EXPLORER – High in the Allegheny Mountains in eastern West Virginia lies a scenic valley with a Canadian-like climate in which it can snow 10 months out of the year. Though only two hours from the Washington beltway, the Canaan Valley receives more snow than the snowiest reporting station in Maine and a shorter growing season than Fairbanks, Alaska. What circumstances lead to this strange phenomenon? According to scientists, the reasons are as complex as they are simple. Christoph Vogel and Robert Leffler determined in a study of the region that elevation, position, and orientation were all contributing elements that notably support the valley's three ski areas, including two alpine resorts and a Nordic ski center. More specifically, they point out that the cold temperatures, increased precipitation, and the valley's similarity to a “huge bathtub” conspire to create its remarkably wintry conditions, which includes an average snowfall of 134 inches. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024  West Virginia University's new folklife exhibit explores cultural connections past and present…discover that perfect Hallmark holiday town, right here in Almost Heaven…and WV School of Osteopathic Medicine awards its first two The Health Plan scholarships…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV PUBLIC – The term “folklife” can evoke the sounds of fiddles and banjoes, or black and white images of grandparents on the old family farm. And those can both be true.  But an exhibit at West Virginia University invites the public to explore how the traditional still influences us today — and how new traditions might influence tomorrow. Catherine Rakowski is the research and exhibition specialist for the West Virginia and Regional History Center at WVU in Morgantown. The center is displaying a piece of folk art she wasn't sure she would ever get a chance to show off to the public -- a friendship quilt. Rakowski said it's one of her favorites, and with good reason: Some 20 hand-embroidered squares, each containing a floral design, and more importantly the name of its maker, are bordered with pink and white fabric borders.  Read more: https://wvpublic.org/folklife-exhibit-explores-cultural-connections-past-and-present/   #2 – From WV LIVING – When temperatures drop, people around the globe reach for the remote to find feel-good movies with loveable leads that are up to holiday hijinks. But more important than the protagonists are their settings: the stunning small towns the characters get to call home. West Virginia is full of such places, small towns overflowing with charm and holiday spirit. From extravagant parades and light shows to beautifully decorated homes and festivals that allow you to step back in time, a walk through these picture-perfect places will warm the heart of the most stubborn scrooge. WVSOM first-year students Sarah Lester of McDowell County, and Emma Beatty, a native of Clay County now living in Wetzel County, have been awarded The Health Plan Scholarship, which covers tuition and fees and is renewable for four years, allowing the students to graduate medical school without worrying about those costs.  Since 2009, The Health Plan Scholarship program has provided more than $3 million in scholarships to more than 50 medical and nursing students who intend to stay and practice in the state of West Virginia. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. West Virginia State University greenhouses are aiding in groundbreaking research in agriculture…Med students participate in a simulation program designed to help them understand economic hardships of some Appalachians…and … it's a record year for record fish caught in West Virginia…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – West Virginia State University President Ericke Cage says the new greenhouses on campus will continue to boost their ongoing agricultural research and development.  The 6,912 square foot series of greenhouses will also help to enhance the agricultural research that's already being conducted at the facility in particular. “It's a great opportunity for us to expand our capability [and] provide more space for our researchers to do the cutting-edge research that they do every day to help support agricultural sustainability,” Cage said. Two research teams will use the four bays set up within the greenhouses. One team will focus on plant genomics and watermelon production, looking at disease-resistant watermelon growth to potentially bring onto the market. The other research team is looking at growing switchgrass for bio-oils for bio-fuels that can be used for jet fuel.  Funded by the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the greenhouses are an extension of the work the university has already been doing with the USDA around agriculture sustainability. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2024/08/11/west-virginia-state-university-welcomes-in-new-greenhouses-to-further-advance-agricultural-research/   #2 – From WV PRESS – First-year medical students at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine have just completed the first mandatory activity of the academic year -- a simulation designed to introduce the concept of the social determinants of health. Created to mimic some of the health inequities present in rural Appalachia, many of the simulation's characters had limited income, lack of access to health care and education, poor social support systems, and experienced discrimination based on their social status. The simulation's objectives were to help WVSOM students identify these determinants, recognize their effects on patient health and outcomes, and find strategies for health care workers to address them.  If the activity made students anxious, it was by design, said Courtney Eleazer, who teaches in WVSOM's Department of Biomedical Sciences and helped lead the activity. “By placing students in the role of patients, this simulation serves to recreate the chronic stress many rural community members face in response to health inequities,” Eleazer said. And with five more months left in the year, officials expect to break the record for number of records broken. “This year will probably end up being the most,” said Mark Scott, assistant chief of Fish Management for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. So far this year, record specimens of tiger trout, redbreast sunfish, bowfin, redear sunfish, black crappie and most recently the channel catfish have all been caught. On average, four state fishing records are broken each year. Since 2020, 17 records have been broken with five being new records for the blue catfish. West Virginia school will remain open for now amid toxic groundwater fears

A small West Virginia school will remain open for now after a court temporarily blocked an effort to relocate classes due to the town's contaminated groundwater being added to a national cleanup priority list. Last June, Wetzel County Schools Superintendent Cassandra R. Porter announced that students, faculty and staff at Paden City High School would be relocated to existing schools in nearby New Martinsville when classes resume this month. However, attorneys representing a group of those students, faculty and staff filed a petition seeking to block the move, according to news outlets. The petition argued that the federal government did not recommend closing the school because there was no health risk and that closing the school would “devastate” the community. “Based upon the petition, there appears to be no emergency, the status of Paden City as a Superfund Site has been known for many years and these conditions are not unforeseen or unanticipated,” Circuit Judge Richard Wilson wrote in his ruling. Wilson ordered that the school's teachers, staff and faculty be reinstated and that the school immediately reopen. A hearing was scheduled on July 25 to determine if the school will remain open. In March 2022, federal environmental officials placed Paden City's groundwater on the list of Superfund cleanup sites. Untreated groundwater contained the solvent tetrachloroethylene at levels higher than the federally allowed limit. Tetrachloroethylene is widely used by dry cleaners. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said the contaminated area is around the site of a dry cleaner that closed more than two decades ago in the Ohio River town of about 2,500 residents. According to the EPA, tetrachloroethylene is a likely carcinogen and can harm the nervous system, liver, kidneys and reproductive system. Paden City is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of Pittsburgh. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

As part of orientation and coming on the heels of their first classes, students spend their first Saturday in medical school doing community service projects across the Greenbrier Valley.  Volunteers from WVSOM visited 16 different sites to offer their skills in service. Host sites included Clifton Presbyterian Church, State Fair of West Virginia, Child Youth & Advocacy Center, Greenbrier County Public Library, Greenbrier Humane Society, and the Williamsburg Community Building. At least one staff or faculty member accompanied a group of students at each location, performing work such as organizing books, landscaping, dog-walking, light construction, and painting.  Students track their volunteer hours all year long as part of their future placement in a residency. WV School of Osteopathic Medicine  assistant dean turns tragic events into opportunity to serve others - and now for the rest of the story…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS –  The team at the West Virginia Department of Commerce — which includes the Division of Forestry, the Division of Labor, the Division of Natural Resources, Geological & Economic Survey, the Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, WorkForce West Virginia and the Division of Rehabilitation Services — has had numerous recent notable achievements.  Among those achievements? Partnering with the job marketplace company Jobcase to launch a West Virginia-focused job database. Implementing the West Virginia Build Act. And designating Summersville Lake as the 36th state park, the first new park in 30 years. Check out this interview with Secretary of Commerce James Bailey to read about more accomplishments and learn what's in store for 2024.  Read more: https://www.wvnews.comn/ews/wvnews/west-virginia-department-of-commerce-charts-course-for-economic-growth-energy-innovation/article_af1771ca-dfb9-11ee-9e8c-73c59b9c9924.html   #2 – From THE DAILY OUTDOOR RETAILER – Holly Fussell recently celebrated the two-year anniversary of buying Water Stone Outdoors in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Water Stone saw 25% growth in revenue from 2022 to 2023, which runs counter to the ongoing narrative in the outdoor industry that has struggled with inventory overhang and other macroeconomic challenges. Fussell attributes that success to internal and external factors. Internally, she said she's built a strong team and updated the store's systems, including its POS program. Externally, nearby New River Gorge was designated as a national park and preserve in 2020, and that has helped bring in customers who are either tourists visiting the area or locals who need supplies to explore the park, Fussell said. The store has always been focused on climbing, but Water Stone is now offering a wider variety of products as well as an expanded coffee shop and a beer garden. “We spent a fair amount of money transforming the back of the shop into a hangout spot,” Fussell said. One of the strategies there is to attract people to the store with lower price point opportunities like beverages. Where most students learn theory before practical applications, this part of Peterson's education took place in reverse. Emergency medicine is important and this gentleman is a leader. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, March 14, 2024.  The WV School of Osteopathic Medicine graduates doctors in all specialities.. A $45,000 donation will bolster STEAM programming at the Ravenswood Innovation Center. And Berkeley County developers learn about the Build WV Act…on today's daily304. #1 – From BROOKEREVIEW – At its core, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine has always been driven by one purpose — to educate students to pursue careers as primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas, especially in the Appalachian region.  That principle is part of the school's mission. But students who graduate from WVSOM are prepared for careers in all specialties. WVSOM's Class of 2023 had a 100 percent residency placement rate. While most of those graduates still sought primary care specialties — 59 percent of them chose family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics or internal medicine-pediatrics — non-primary care specialties such as emergency medicine and surgery also proved attractive to graduates. “Students come to WVSOM because they have a passion for the underserved, and they address underserved populations through various specialties,” said Abigail Frank, D.O., assistant dean for graduate medical education. “Many of our students are interested in primary care, and we also have students who are interested in surgery, anesthesia, radiology and emergency medicine. Then we have folks who go into internal medicine, which is primary care. Internal medicine also allows our alumni to go into fellowships like cardiology, nephrology or oncology.” Read more: https://www.brookereview.com/2024/03/03/primary-care-is-ingrained-in-wvsoms-mission-but-school-excels-at-preparing-students-for-any-specialty/  #2 – From WV PRESS – BHE Renewables Project has announced an investment in Jackson County's future. The foundation's $45,000 donation will bolster STEAM and technical programming through the district's new Ravenswood Innovation Center, according to Jackson County Schools Superintendent Will Hosaflook. “The BHE Foundation's generous investment in our Ravenswood Innovation Center echoes BHE Renewables' continued commitment and support of the communities in which they reside. This investment will help provide a path toward a better future for our students and in return will provide a better future for us all,” Hosaflook said. According to district officials, the Ravenswood Innovation Center will be the home of an engaging curriculum for students to harness their strengths of creativity, problem solving, and innovation while focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Agriculture, and Math.  Since launching the STEAM initiative this past year, Jackson County Schools has instructed over 400 students a week, grades second through eighth, in their current STEAM program. The program serves to provide a myriad of skills, including hands-on activities, that will prepare students for job-specific opportunities in our community, as well as the nation. Read more: https://wvpress.org/wvpa-sharing/bhe-foundation-invests-in-jackson-county-schools/   #3 – From MARTINSBURG JOURNAL-NEWS – A representative from the West Virginia Department of Economic Development shared information on the Build WV Act at the Berkeley County Development Authority's latest Lunch & Learn. Passed in 2022, the Build WV Act is geared to assist West Virginia's growing communities in attracting much-needed housing development projects, especially in the area of middle-income housing. The act offers a state sales and use tax exemption for building materials and a 10-year property value adjustment refundable tax credit to offset building costs. Meghan Smith, manager of business and industrial development for the Development Office, told the group gathered that a revision to the act allows up to $150 million in overall costs of projects in any given fiscal year. The state fiscal year runs from July to June, she clarified. Tax incentives for projects that get approval for the Build WV Act include sales tax exemptions for contractors, subcontractors and all others associated with the project; a property value adjustment credit against the individual and corporate income tax, set at one-tenth per year for 10 years; and a potential business and occupancy tax exemption where applicable. The superintendent of the Brooke County school district, in the northern panhandle of West Virginia near Wheeling, is offering groveling written apologies to the Pittsburgh Public Schools because of a “Trump Perry” sign at the game between Brooke and Perry high schools. The Brooke superintendent called the harmless sign “insensitive, intimidating and offensive.” That is pathetic and spineless. The Brooke school district should demand that she resign before she further disgraces the good name of Brooke County. Political correctness unwittingly has devolved into self-parody or satire. Session 20 In today's episode, Ryan talks with Kate, a 56-year old 3rd year medical student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine as she  shares with us her path to becoming a physician. Kate was initially a bio premed major until she decided to stop and pursue a career as a nurse until changing careers to becoming a nurse midwife and doing another career change into finally becoming a physician. Kate is definitely proof that anything is possible. Anyone can get into medical school. You just need to put in the work and you'll get there. Listen in to Kate’s amazing journey! Here are the highlights of the conversation with Kate: Kate's path to becoming a physician: Decided to become a doctor when she was 10 Interest in rural family practice growing up in rural locations for the  most part of her life Initially a biology premed major until midway through college Transferred to a nursing program in her junior year Working as a nurse midwife for 13 years prior to medical school Switching from being a nurse to a nurse midwife and a teacher in nursing Deciding to go back to medical school at the age of 50 Why Kate decided to stop being premed the first time: Medical school as having a cutthroat environment Finding the length of education to be overwhelming Found interest in what the nurses are doing and wanting immediate gratification The thought of raising kids Lack of research into the whole thing when she made her decision The driving force that made her decide to get into medical school: Being involved in her local community and seeing the need for primary care Seeing physicians as a really huge instrument for change especially in the effective organization around  public health issues Thirst for knowledge and wanting to become a "change" agent Resources she tapped into initially: Kate googled "old premedical students" which led her to OldPreMeds.org Knowing what prerequisites were needed Her family physicians Taking her postbac program: Not being able to get to the classes she needed Ended up applying to two schools for a "structured" postbac program Quitting her job to do the program full time Having that fear in terms of finances Getting the finances: Applying to the National Health Service Corps each year and not getting it Applying for loan repayment program as her plan B Considerations for choosing the schools she applied to: Emphasis on rural primary care and global medical outreach Geography (closer to family) Specifically choosing osteopathic medical schools but ended up applying to 6 DO schools and 6 MD schools and getting 6 interviews The interview process: Having a collegiate footing with the interviewer being a nurse educator herself Giving her an edge as a nontraditional old premed having had some experiences The biggest obstacle that she had overcome: Talking herself out of trying Links and Other Resources: West Virginia School of Medicine National Health Service Corps OldPreMeds.org AAMC list of postbac programs If you need any help with the medical school interview, go to medschoolinterviewbook.com. Session 2 In this episode, Ryan and Rich dive into the forums over at OldPreMeds.org where they pull a question and deliver the answers right on to you. OldPreMeds Question of the Week: What age is too old for medical school? Here are the insights from Ryan & Rich: Age is not a factor. Here are some facts and figures: About a thousand a year over the age of 30 matriculate every year into an allopath medical school which is about 5% of the total number of students who start the year. From that number, about 200 are of the age of 35. About 350 people a year over the age of 31 start osteopathic school 10-12 people a year over the age of 50 start medical school Success Story: One of our more recent success stories is Laisha Heedman, a nurse/midwife who recently graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine at the age of 57. She has gone onto residency and family practice medicine. Is there any bias that goes on with age? The percentage of applicants is nearly the same as the percentage that you get accepted regardless of age range. Applicants who are above 40 years of age seem to be less represented but there is no bias going on. Factors that may be affecting the demographics are difficulty in preparing, getting the grades, and doing things that need to get done when you are working full time and you have a family. Many people who have been successful in other medical careers such as nurse/midwife, nurse practitioner, nurse, PhD researchers have also been successful at getting  into medical school at 40 and above. MD vs DO? The applicant base for MD schools is about 50,000 while for DO schools, it's under 20,000 - large difference. For an applicant per seat basis, it is therefore more competitive to get into an osteopathic school than it is to get into an allopathic school. Do older students have less years of good working time? Different variables to consider: Burnout as one of the common issues of physicians Prior working experience in healthcare as a nurse/midwife or other medical-related What the admissions committee will actually be looking for: Will this person be a good physician that you want to be treated by?
