Recently The Washington Post released graphic images, videos, and audio recordings from mass shootings, in a report called “Terror on Repeat.” Should news outlets attempt to push awareness through the use of graphic imagery? If so, do survivor families have the right to refuse to let photos of their friends or family members be released?    The answer, of course, is complicated. Complexity and nuance can be hard to find in the news and social media. Like so many things, the real answer comes down to sovereignty: the rights of the people directly involved to make choices about what actions are taken, and to what end.    In this special encore episode, Sandy Hook parent survivor Nelba Márquez-Greene and I discuss what cries of “release the photos!” means to survivors who have already had their private lives invaded, and their peoples' images co-opted for others' use.    That's just part of our conversation, and all of it is timely: we discuss what it's like to live such a public grief, and what it means to find joy - and hope - in an often violent world. Don't miss it.    In this episode we cover:  The importance of telling your own story in the ways you want to tell it (no matter who demands a soundbite)  Supporting each other: the difference between an “inside the house” friend and an “on the porch” friend.  Why no single form of advocacy for survivors is right for all survivors  Where your money goes when you donate funds in the wake of a tragedy What to do when the next act of gun violence happens   Looking for a creative exploration of grief? Should Gun Suicides be Counted as Gun Violence? (Feat. Gun Lawyer Kostas Moros)

The Weekly Reload Podcast

This week, we're examining the way that most gun-control groups count "gun violence." Kostas Moros, a gun-rights lawyer, joins the show to discuss the piece he wrote for The Reload about why the decision to include gun-related suicides in those counts is misleading. He explained that the majority of gun deaths, and usually up to two-thirds of them, are suicides. He said gun-control activists' claims about the correlation between strict gun laws and lower levels of "gun violence" don't hold water without including suicides. Moros argued states with strict gun laws often don't have lower gun murder rates or overall murder rates than their pro-gun neighbors. He cited his home state of California as a prime example of this phenomenon. Its murder rate is higher than its less restrictive neighbors to the north and only marginally better than Arizona, which has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the country. Additionally, Moros says treating gun suicides as a type of criminal violence is illogical. He argued no other forms of suicide are referred to as a kind of violence or included in violence counts for knives, rope, or anything else.  He noted that guns are among the most deadly suicide techniques, and gun owners should do everything possible to mitigate the problem. He also noted that the absence or presence of guns at a societal level doesn't correlate to a country's suicide rate. The United States has by far the most civilian-owned firearms in the world, but our suicide rate is comparable to most other developed nations and much lower than countries like South Korea. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I look at the unethical way Brady United used an Aurora theater victim's family in a stunt lawsuit that left them bankrupt. Special Guest: Kostas Moros.

Gun owners would be required to carry liability insurance and pay a fee in the city of San Jose that officials say would be the first of its kind in the United States, following a trend of other Democratic-led cities that have sought to rein in violence through stricter rules. The City Council is expected to vote on the plan tonight. "San Jose has an opportunity to become a model for the rest of the nation to invest in proven strategies to reduce gun violence, domestic violence and suicide and the many other preventable harms from firearms in our communities," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said at a news conference Monday. Other similar laws have been proposed but San Jose would be the first city in the country to pass one, according to Brady United, a national nonprofit that advocates against gun violence. FOX News Radio's National Correspondent Jared Halpern and FOX News Radio Political Analyst Josh Kraushaar recap the first night with Senior Advisor and Communications Director for the DNC Xochitl Hinojosa. The unrest has more people arming themselves and Americans have already bought more guns this year than in all of 2019. Listen NowUS gun violence is, in one word, obscene.  It is widely considered an epidemic, even the always cautious AMA termed it a "public health crisis" in 2016.  Through the first five months of this year there were 148 mass shootings that killed or wounded nearly 750 individuals.   It is worth repeating comments I made in April 2018 to introduce Dr. Al-Abga (whom treated victims of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting).  US gun deaths are 96 times higher than in Japan, 55 times higher than in the UK, 32 times higher than in Germany.  Gun violence is particularly common in schools.  Since 2000 there have been over 200 shootings in over 40 states at elementary, middle, high schools and at colleges and universities. Research suggests gun violence is explained largely by one fact: gun prevalence. The US makes up less than 5% of the world's population but owns nearly 45 percent the world's guns, or 300 million that one-third of Americans' possess.  Ownership is, for example, 150 times higher than in Japan.  This fact largely explains why guns used to commit homicides far exceeds other developed countries.  US gun homicides are 471 times more prevalent than in the UK.  As for whether mental health issues explain US gun violence, the rate of severe mental disorders in the US is no greater than in comparative countries. During this 26 minute conversation Ms. Brown discusses Brady United's mission or work activities including its legal efforts relative to the 2nd amendment.  Moreover, she explains current efforts in the Congress to appropriate moneys for federal gun violence research (that has not been conducted for over 20 years) and recently House-passed bills that include regulating gun sales via extending background checks to private fire arm sales.  Ms. Brown also discusses policy plans by Democratic presidential candidates including Sen. Cory Borker to curb gun violence and she discusses the State of Virginia's upcoming special session next month in the wake of the May 31st Virginia Beach shooting that left 12 dead.  Ms. Kris Brown is the President of Brady.  Ms. Brown began her career working on Capitol Hill for (now former ) Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), advocating for the bill that would eventually become the Brady Act requiring background checks on federally licensed gun sales.  At Brady, she led the lunch of the organization's safe storage campaign to End Family Fire and formed Brady's “Team Enough” youth initiative after February 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Florida.  A noted media commentator, Ms. Brown was, for example, featured in the November 2018 TIME magazine cover article titled, “Guns in America.”  Ms. Brown has also served as the Chief Legal Officer to a publicly traded company based in Switzerland and as a lawyer practicing at the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges.  She earned her law degree at George Mason University. For more on Brady go to: https://www.bradyunited.org/  For information on the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 go to: https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/1112/text The recent debate sparked by FiveThirtyEight regarding the accuracy of CDC's gun injury statistics and titled, "The CDC is Publishing Unreliable Date on Gun Injuries, People Are Using It Anyway," is at: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-cdc-is-publishing-unreliable-data-on-gun-injuries-people-are-using-it-anyway/ This is a public episode.
