The Randolph brothers busted a hole in the wall of their bakery to accommodate factory worker's short break time. That was the first of 3 ways to create word of mouth. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from Mom and Pop to major brands. Steven Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Steven sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Travis Crawford Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young. I'm here with Steven Semple, and we're going to talk about an empire that was built, that's why we call it the Empire Builders, in case you hadn't caught onto that whole thing about why we're named what we are. Good morning, Steven. How are you? Stephen Semple: Wow, you're really on it this morning. Dave Young: I'm not on a... People ask, "Is that scripted?" Oh gosh, no. Isn't it obvious? You've whispered our subject for the day in my ear just as we started the countdown, and it instantly brought back memories of trips to Austin, Texas, with my children back in the early 2000s. Probably back around the turn of the century, young man, shortly after. Stephen Semple: Really? Dave Young: Mm-hmm. When Julie and I first traveled down to Wizard Academy, we had four kids at home. And this was when Wizard Academy was still down in Butte, at Roy's office. So the easiest way to get there was down I-35, if you're familiar with Austin. Stephen Semple: Right. Okay. Dave Young: Well, right at... I think it's at Slaughter and I-35. We had to make a stop every time as we headed south at a Krispy Kreme Donuts. Stephen Semple: At a Krispy Kreme. All right. Dave Young: Because we didn't have a Krispy Kreme donuts back in Western Nebraska. There probably still isn't one. Stephen Semple: There's no question. They're far more concentrated in the south of [inaudible 00:03:00] although another city that has a ton of them is New York City. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: Yeah. When I was doing the speaking engagement this summer at NASDAQ... So first of all, there's a really neat one right off of Times Square. I swear, you couldn't go five minutes on Manhattan without bumping into a Krispy Kreme. They were everywhere. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: Yeah, they were absolutely everywhere in New York. Dave Young: In case the listener hasn't figured it out, today's topic is Krispy Kreme donuts. Stephen Semple: I guess we never had [inaudible 00:03:30] announce that, did we? Dave Young: What we loved about it... I mean... Shoot, I'm raising kids, and everybody ate donuts, right? But we had a place in our hometown called Daylight Donuts, which I think was a small franchise. And you could get donuts at the grocery store. You could get the boxes of donuts, but man, there was just nothingness. And Dunkin was around, but there was just like the Krispy Kreme had the green light, red light thing on the drive-up. And if the green light was on, it means they're making donuts right now. And yours will still be hot from the grease when they hand it to you out the window. And it was like, "That was an amazing thing." Stephen Semple: Yeah, they've done incredible. They were founded by two brothers, Vernon and Louis Randolph, and Winston-Salem on July 13th, 1937. And today, they have 1400 locations. They got 21,000 employees, and they do a half a billion in revenues. So they've done real well. Dave Young: I think half a billion's empire sized. Stephen Semple: Well, yeah, it's a lot of donuts. That's a lot of donuts. Dave Young: It's a lot of donuts. The other thing that was really cool about what's go...

Krispy Kreme Donuts are popular for several reasons but when you through them on the grill, they are truly over the top GOOD. You have to at least try them before you knock them. Also, we grilled some Chuck Eye steaks with mixed results. Chris loved the first bite, texture and flavor but there was way too much fat that did not render down. However, for the price, it is worth trying again. Finally Chris shares his thoughts on a new idea for stuffed apples to maximize the flavor and creamy goodness inside. Stay tuned for further updates and email us to let us know if you try anything we talk about. A place where youth are given a second chance and find hope. Learn how Home On The Range is aiding troubled youth. Plus what hidden fees to beware of when booking hotels... And there is a new Monopoly out in time for the holidays. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 151 Details Fall is upon us now and if like Tigger & BEC, you are too trying to soak up all that fall brings which includes fall fishing. They have been fly fishing for pan fish and BEC is practicing more in hopes of eventually going fly fishing for trout. If you have a place they need to visit for such a trip, please share! NEWS BEARS ENJOY KRISPY KREME DONUTS Anchorage, Alaska may be a likely place for bears to live in the surrounding wilderness, however did you know they are fans too of Krispy Kreme Donuts? Recently a mama bear aka a sow, along with her cub were caught red-handed devouring fresh tasty donuts. A Krispy Kreme delivery driver delivering baked goods, left the door to the van open only to return to find the Mama bear and her cub raiding the van! Local law enforcement was able to chase the bears away using loud sirens. HOTEL TAXES, WATCH YOUR BILL! Some hotels have been adding surprising additional ‘incidental charges' to the hotel bill that may surprise you. Incidental Charges or sometimes called even an extra “hotel tax” or “resort fee”, are additional expenses guests may have thought were included in the hotel stay. The hotel deems these items or amenities as those that are beyond the basic room rate or standard room rate. For example, the charges could include pool use, minibar usage, parking fees, internet access as well as now we have experienced charges for daily housekeeping. Every hotel is different, but with trips to Vegas for the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) or booking holiday travel over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, we want all advised. The reason for the incidental charge(s) is that hotels claim to be suffering tight margins in the hospitality industry thus putting these previously absorbed costs back on the consumer. So there ya have it, beware of Hotel Hidden costs and check your bills carefully upon booking and at checkout. FREE FOOD SAMPLER ABUSER Many of us who have visited stores giving out free samples of some treat, may have at least once in our life or may be guilty of being an abuser of said Free Food Samples. Costco may be curbing some of that as news was released, by The Takeout, that those who are huge fans of grabbing the freebies or feel it is part of their reason for a membership may be in for a surprise if this hasn't happened already at your local location. Costco is distributing free samples at some locations using self-serve sample kiosks, and the reason behind the change is Labor Shortage. Human product demonstrators can cost the company upwards of $15/hour and there are not a lot of people applying for the jobs. Currently, Costco kiosks in some locations are being used for samples of chips, cookies, and other pre-packaged goods. So Now You Know what else is replacing humans other than just self-checkouts or AI these days… and if you are one that often takes up a second job during the Holiday Months, it is being reported that there are fewer jobs being posted at this time for Holiday Help by nationwide retailers. NEWS HOME ON THE RANGE Guest: Jolene Obrigewitch, Development Director Home On The Range - A place where youth are given a second chance and find hope. https://hotrnd.com/ Every year a major fundraiser for the nonprofit Home On The Range is the PRCA Champions Ride Saddle Bronc Match. The top world leaders in saddle bronc arrive on the edge of the Badlands to participate in an epic mid-summer battle between the toughest broncs and the top athletes in the field. SPOTLIGHT TALENTED YOUTH DOING AMAZING THINGS So often we praise the talents of youth who play on a field or in a gym. Recently, we learned of two high school seniors in central North Dakota attending Wishek Public School who have been stepping up this fall and setting a great example. Javen Meidinger and Trestan Lepp have been doing just that. Thus far Meidinger and Lepp have been able to fix components on the score table, build a loft in the school's shed for extra storage, weld legs on dividing walls to stabilize better, and they have made a few carts that are being used in the shop as well as help out with other small projects. Gentlemen - you receive our Tip of the Hat and we wish you a successful future as you are already setting a great example for others. CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EARLY Now that Fall is here, are you starting your Christmas shopping already?? OR is it just too soon? Next week on the show just to tease ya, we are going to be talking about items to buy NOW to use for next spring and summer adventures and which ones make for great gifts this holiday season too! SAVING YOU MONEY is our goal. But for now, those who are a kid at heart… wanted to share what was just released. Christmas Vacation Monopoly All of those fans of Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, a new Monopoly game has hit the shelves based on your favorite National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Or, worse yet, never even attempted to achieve the dream? Well, buckle your seat belts, folks. Today is going to be the day where you are going to receive a revelation that will inspire you to make a radical transformation to start walking out your God given destiny. Amen! This is part two of a great "four part" interview with my guest today, Don W. Long, a respected serial entrepreneur of two businesses that have generated more than $100 million in sales spanning over three decades. As a fifth-generation business owner, Don took everything he learned from his family to survive what he calls, “a humbling period” as a door-to-door salesman of Krispy Kreme Donuts, alarms, vacuums, 18-wheeler courses, and other products. You relate that to systems that are influencing our world today. Would you explain this for us and how you came to realize this information was applicable to us today? You share that the “Great Commission” is actually a three pronged mission. Explain these three areas and how we, as Christians, should be operating in accordance with the “Great Commission…” To Disciple the Nations Save and Repair the Systems Get Every Soul Saved Explain how the disciples were known for “turning the world upside down” and that is form of fulfilling the “Great Commission” that we can use today… What is the https://amzn.to/3ccdrcE (“Blueprint of God”) and how can we find it? From your three published books, we are going to focus on https://amzn.to/3ccdrcE (“The Blueprint of God”) today, where you focus on helping people to find their dreams, desires and destiny. Amen! Our club decided that since we had leftover funds from the previous year, we didn't need to do a fundraiser for ourselves. So, we decided to do one for charity. Two of our officers previously raised a lot of money through selling Krispy Kreme Donuts, so we decided to do that as our fundraiser. We believed we would make the most profit with this company. We sold them for two weeks during November. They were supposed to be delivered and distributed in December; however, sports and activities were shut down for two weeks, so our dates got postponed. We were finally able to distribute the donuts at the beginning of January. We ended up having extras so we donated those to essential workers. We raised over $1,000 for Make-A-Wish and donated the money shortly after the donuts were delivered.
