Episode Highlights How Dr. Laura Got Into Functional Medicine Dr. Laura got into this field because of her health issues when she was younger. In college, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease.  Conventional medicine mostly fails to bring results to people suffering from this condition. So, she started looking for an alternative. What is Functional Medicine? It is a blanket term for a different approach to health and wellness. Unlike traditional medicine which focuses on symptomatic relief, functional medicine aims to identify your symptoms' root causes. It's figuring out how your lifestyle and unique biology perpetuate your symptoms.  Functional medicine treats your condition through nutrition, lifestyle, and supporting your body's physiology. Hashimoto's Disease The symptoms can often be vague and apply to many other conditions, such as having low energy.  It goes undiagnosed for many women for a long time. Family history is crucial in identifying the disease. Lab work is the place to start to figure out why you're experiencing symptoms even when you're following a healthy routine. Transitioning to the Business Space She worked as a contractor at an integrative health center that integrated functional medicine, chiropractic care, and massage in New Jersey. Her experience as a contractor taught her about patient-centered care. When she moved to Arizona, she decided to create her version of it. She created her brick-and-mortar practice in Scottsdale, Arizona. The pandemic allowed her to think about who she loves to serve: women who constantly strive to be better. She spends time in the office but has the flexibility to work online as well.  Metabolic Laboratory Analysis Dr. Laura runs metabolic laboratory analyses with her one-on-one clients to optimize their health and performance. It's helpful for women who want a closer look at their condition or simply want optimal health. These tests give you a bigger picture of what's going on in your body.  It can tell you how your metabolism is functioning in real-time and even how your cell health is. Vitamin Deficiency for Women In Their 30s Vitamin D deficiency is a trend for women in their 30s and 40s. It's difficult to get magnesium from our food supply, considering where the sources are being grown. Hormonal birth control depletes magnesium. Stress and lack of sleep also contribute to its deficiency. Lots of women also need more vitamin B complex, as it is vital for cellular repair and energy. Optimal Health Indicators Just because something is common doesn't mean it's normal.  Optimal health looks different for every woman. The major signs to look at are sleep and energy swings. We are not supposed to be constantly stressed and anxious all the time. If you can handle different stressors efficiently, you're on the right path towards optimal health. Practices to Ease Anxiety Learn how to breathe correctly using your diaphragm. Breathing into the abdomen translates everywhere else into your body. Individualization is key to nutrition; no blanket recommendation will work for everybody. Balancing Everything as a Busy Woman Working with business mentors and coaches was invaluable in helping Dr. Laura set boundaries and get her business in order. Recognize when to reach out for help. She keeps her daily to-do lists actionable, small, and simple. Dr. Laura's Daily Non-Negotiables She drinks coffee every morning and journals to get ready for the day.  She schedules her workouts for the week and holds herself accountable for them. The final non-negotiable is shutting her phone off at a certain point in the evening. Advice for a Woman Frustrated with Her Health Baby steps are better than nothing. Pick one thing you can start working on. Find the right health practitioner with whom you feel a connection to help with your health concerns.
