Havok Journal owner Charles Faint joins us for the last update of 2024. Charles is a retired Army Intelligence Officer who teaches at West Point military academy. Charles shares his “second favorite” event at West Point; “Branch Night”. Branch Night is the evening when the cadets learn what branch they will be assigned. They are handed a sealed envelope and, after some formalities and a keynote speaker, they all tear open their envelopes to learn where they will start their Army career. Generally, there is great excitement. However, on occasion, some cadets are disappointed. Charles explains that “Some of the best things that happened to me in life happened because I didn't get what I wanted at the moment.” He would expect any Army 2nd Lieutenant to just commit to doing the best job they can wherever they are assigned. Next, we discuss Dave Chamberlain's article about transitioning to civilian life. Dave served in our military for 38 years. His article makes a great comparison between leaving the service and “phantom limb pain”. Dave describes his first “phantom pain” came when his unit deployed shortly after retiring. Vincent Johnson's article “Friends Lost in the Sandbox” describes his challenges in dealing with the loss of comrades and survivors guilt. Charles shares his personal experiences in the same vein. Brooke Hickox wrote an excellent article titled “A Civilian's Military Benefit From a Daughter's Perspective”. She describes growing up as the daughter of a law enforcement officer and Vietnam Veteran; the challenges but also the great way it prepared her for a productive adult life. Charles says it stands as an example of the breadth and diversity of their contributing authors. We wrap up with Frank Pauc's hard hitting article “What it Takes to Bridge the Civ-Mil Divide”. Even with my three decades of supporting military families, this article challenged my ideas about what we as civilians owe military Veterans. I strongly recommend that any civilians seeking to understand the military/first responder communities pay a visit to the Havok Journal.

Morgan Lerette discusses his new book on his time as a Blackwater mercenary in Iraq and what a mess war and Private Military Companies (PMCs) are. He talks about laughing in the face of death and how, as bad as Saddam Hussein was, he kept things in check. America starts endless wars with no planned endgame. He tells stories of meeting Erik Prince, John Bolton, and Pat Tillman. He comments on Wagner, how PMCs are being used in Ukraine and Gaza, and the great power conflict. Take it from Morgan Lerette - he's a retired Blackwater Operator, Army Intelligence Officer, and the author of 'Guns, Girls, & Greed: I Was A Blackwater Mercenary in Iraq', an irreverently honest memoir that shows both the good and the bad of injecting private armies into active combat zones in the name of diplomacy, spread out over the early days of the Iraq War. With gut-wrenching tragedy, dark humor, and absolutely insane party stories that make 'Animal House' seem like a Disney film, Morgan's memoir offers a firsthand perspective of how men act and react in war, for better or worse. It's a story of national incompetence, international collapse, and the search for blood and treasure that either helped - or hindered - the American war effort in Iraq. Was all the carnage worth it? He joined Blackwater in 2004 and was sent to Iraq to protect diplomats. Blackwater Security Company developed quite a reputation. Morgan Lerette was a contractor with Blackwater in Iraq for 18 months from 2004-2005. His sometimes funny, sometimes tragic experience is documented in his book “Guns, Girls & Greed: I was a Blackwater Mercenary in Iraq” Morgan joined the Air National Guard right out of high school in order to escape his small town. He became an Air Force Security Forces member and had been serving for two years when 9/11 happened. Despite having deployed to Iraq, Morgan says he felt much like other military members at the time – he never really got to experience “his war”. Some friends suggested joining Blackwater shortly after some of their contractors had been hung from a bridge in Fallujah. However, being paid $550 per day and a chance to experience “his war” sounded good to Morgan. While many may believe that all Blackwater contractors are special operations Veterans, at that time there was a huge demand to fulfill government contracts. Morgan says they were recruiting anyone who could “shoot, move, communicate and get security clearance.” After a brief two week training course, Morgan found himself in Iraq. His say his mission mainly consisted of driving a “very important person from the safe area to the dangerous area and back.” Morgan's book unabashedly describes what can happen when highly paid men with no rules and no consequences are deployed to a foreign country. I would describe his book as a modern day version of “Catch 22”. There are numerous examples in his book that highlight the hopeless absurdity of our efforts to rebuild Iraq. It wasn't long before Morgan lost faith in the idea of helping the Iraqis & just became numb to it all. Upon his return home, he had trouble finding a “normal life”. There are no support systems for independent contractors. Morgan eventually finished his college degree and returned to Iraq as an Army Intelligence Officer with “half the pay and twice the restrictions”. It is estimated that as many as 160,000 private military contractors were active in Iraq. We spend some time discussing whether organizations like Blackwater are a necessary evil in modern combat. TAKEWAY: Morgan describes private military contractors like a disposable Starbucks cup. They use you and then toss you away.

Building wealth through acquisition entrepreneurship is becoming more and more predominant among business owners and those yet to leap into entrepreneurship. Instead of starting a business from zero, acquisition entrepreneurs start by buying an existing operation and then using their knowledge to create a greater impact. In today's episode, our guest Ben Kelly shares his unconventional journey of entrepreneurship through business acquisitions. He talks about the many benefits of buying a business, why it's such an incredible business opportunity, and what it takes to become a successful acquisition entrepreneur.About Ben Kelly:Ben Kelly is an inspiring acquisition entrepreneur who acquired and scaled five businesses with little to no cash upfront. Ben went from being a former Army Intelligence Officer to serving JPMorgan Bank's largest clients as a Private Banking Associate. He then took more control of his career by founding a fitness SaaS startup with a fellow army veteran and jumping into entrepreneurship. Currently serving as the head of Acquisition Ace, Ben is committed to building a portfolio of healthy businesses and helping others do the same - all through the increasingly popular acquisition entrepreneurship model. Episode highlights Acquisition entrepreneurship is an incredible business opportunity for building true wealth, achieving financial freedom, and finally, living the life you've always wanted to live. (02:37) Anyone can pursue entrepreneurship through acquisitions, but not everyone can make it in the field. But as long as you're ready to roll up your sleeves, you don't have to be an expert in everything to thrive as an acquisition entrepreneur. (06:57) There are many benefits to buying an existing business instead of starting a new one from scratch. You can piggyback off someone else's hard work and vision, get in the driver's seat, and hit the gas pedal. (13:00) Success looks different for everyone, especially in business. But you shouldn't tie your success in acquisition entrepreneurship to just numbers; instead, aim to discover an alternative means to an end to keep yourself going. (27:34) Anyone can acquire a business, but not everyone can be great at it. Having the right mindset and being open-minded are just some of the traits that show you're cut out to be an acquisition entrepreneur. (30:22) Ben's best advice for entrepreneurs:“It just hit me like a ton of bricks. The clients I'm serving have a hundred times more wealth than I do. And all of them are business owners. I'm serving them because they're the ones who have the wealth. [...] So it just kind of hit me that real wealth was created through assets and having an asset that produced a tangible product that helped people and through that building wealth.” (02:47)Connect with Ben: Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Resources Mentioned: Acquisition Ace Applicant Call Ben's YouTube Follow Beyond 8 Figures: Linkedin Twitter Website

Erik Kleinsmith is a former U.S. Army Intelligence Officer and private contractor who has testified in front of Congress. Erik knows Pete A. Turner (Episode 185) and he and Paul started by talking about his career in the United States Army and serving overseas. Erik grew up in Plymouth, Michigan and said it was an idyllic setting for him and his two brothers to grow up in. He told Paul about his mom and dad and especially talked about how involved his Dad was and how they lost him way too early. Erik spoke about what his dad built in their backyard that attracted so many neighborhood kids for so long, his Mom would sometimes have to ask them to leave! Paul and Erik discussed his career in the private intelligence arena and how it led to him testifying in front of the U.S. Congress. They talked about 9/11 and how if certain intelligence hadn't been quashed, it could have made a possible difference. Paul asked Erik about his involvement with Case Breakers and Erik told Paul how they work on and solve some of the most famous cold cases ever.
This lecture was recorded live on October 24, 2022 at The Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C.. About the Lecture This lecture will discuss how intelligence capabilities and operations have evolved to enable our national government leaders and military forces to seamlessly counter and/or defeat a near-peer adversary capable of contesting the U.S. in all domains [air, land, maritime, space, and cyberspace] in both competition and armed conflict. This evolution has changed the way tactical, operational, and strategic intelligence capabilities support both national strategy and military operations. It also requires simultaneous, integrated, and synchronized intelligence operational planning and execution, at the speed and scale needed to avoid surprises, gain the advantage, and satisfy all types of intelligence consumers in near-real-time. Today's intelligence community has adapted our ability to seamlessly analyze, fuse, and share what was once domain-centric information into a single ecosystem that supports the national leadership and military commanders across all domains and all levels of competition/war. About the Speaker Col. Stephen Iwicki has served in the U.S. Intelligence community in both a military and industry capacity for the last 35 years. He began his intelligence career when he was commissioned as an Army Intelligence Officer in 1985 after an ROTC Scholarship for his undergraduate studies. Over the next 20 years, he served in positions of increasing responsibility with extensive experience in managing every facet of the intelligence process from raw intelligence collection and processing to strategic-level analysis supporting White House Cabinet members. He is experienced in employing both foreign and domestic intelligence capabilities in support of national security. Trey Hudson is the author of; THE MEADOW PROJECT: EXPLORATIONS INTO THE SOUTH'S SKINWALKER RANCH There are several epicenters of such strangeness that have been ingrained into our collective consciousness over the decades. The Hessdalen Valley in Norway, the Hoia-Baciu Forest in Romania, Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, the Mesa Verde dwellings in New Mexico, Stardust Ranch near Rainbow Valley, Arizona and of course the legendary Skinwalker Ranch in Utah, USA. This book chronicles the in-depth research into another such location located in America’s Southland. This remote site, known among select researchers simply as the “Meadow” is the location of many astounding events. Some have even compared it to the Skinwalker Ranch itself with its own reports of UFOs, cryptid beasts, portals, missing time, crop circle like formations, men/women in black, orbs, strange beams of light, mysterious beings and many other oddities. Discovery of the Meadow was one of those serendipitous happenings that one hears about from time to time. Its precise location has not been compromised and therefore, has not been laid siege by curiosity seekers and other people looking for a quick thrill. In short, the site is pristine and inviolate. This makes it unique and special among these types of places. Finally, after several years, all the research and field notes concerning the Meadow have been compiled into book form and are ready to be released to the public. “The Meadow Project: Explorations into the South’s Skinwalker Ranch” will take you along the amazing journey from its discovery to the most recent investigations. You will get to meet the researchers and experience their excitement, apprehension and sometimes personal loss.It is an amazing story that does not belong to any one person or group. It is rather the world’s story and deserves to be told. Trey Hudson is the Director of the Oxford Paranormal Society and its Anomalous Studies and Observation Group (ASOG). He is an Eagle Scout and former Army Intelligence Officer. He has a psychology degree from the University of West Georgia where he studied under the likes of Dr. Bill Roll and other luminaries. He has a 30 plus year career as a US government Security Specialist specializing in security of sensitive assets, anti-terrorism, security of WMD, emergency management and other specialties. He also served a tour in Afghanistan in this capacity. He lives in the Southern US and has a wife and two adult daughters. PLEASE - FOLLOW, LIKE, FAVORITE, SUBSCRIBE wherever you listen to podcasts. Are you interested in hearing more about how people who have come through the Director of Operations certification program are structuring their businesses? My guest today is Courtney Waid, who came through the Director of Operations (DOO) certification program in Round 6. I’m chatting with her about the way she has been able to cultivate success for herself and the transitions she has made as she has come into the space. Meet Courtney Courtney the founder of First Turn Operations, and a mother of four. Her background started in the army. She is a West Point graduate, a former army intelligence officer, which she loved. Once she had kids she decided to get out of the army, while her husband continued in his fast paced army career. She kept busy with various volunteer gigs, mom groups, and charities but she wanted to do more. “I always really struggled with wanting to put my skills to use, but wanting to be there for the kids.” She started out as a virtual assistant, and found she enjoyed the operations and project management tasks. She moved up in the ranks of a VA company and when one of the founders decided to go back into the coaching business, she was recruited to work as a community manager and eventually became the DOO of that organization. Shortly after she started in the DOO program, her organization shifted gears, which was then the perfect opportunity to strike out on her own. As you were thinking about up-leveling your skills, what was it about the DOO certification that intrigued you? There is no other program like this that looks specifically at the DOO level. She had looked at OBM programs, but that seemed more on the execution side of things. After doing extensive research, she felt like this program would help her take the skills that she had and package them up in a way that she could understand and create boundaries. Her role as a DOO bled into marketing and executing and anytime anything had to get done it was her, so she really liked the idea of learning how to put boundaries on her role She would not have had the confidence to hone in on her automation skills without the course and all of the women in her cohort. The idea of project work really scared her because she wanted the predictable income, but it took the group pushing her to do what she loved. “The ability to match your aptitude with what you enjoy comes out in the DOO program” - Natalie Gingrich “When you’re good at getting things done, you end up doing all the things.” - Courtney Waid When you were looking over the certification, were there any fears or doubts you had? She had to do some soul searching to see if it was something she really needed, or if she was falling into the trap of feeling like she needed a certification in order to be valid. She talked to some of the people who had been through the program, realized the network that she would have access to. It was so different to be surrounded by people who were doing similar work and had similar thinking rather than her old circles who were primarily filled with visionaries. It took her a long time to work internally on not feeling less-than because she was not a visionary. The DOO program helped her validate and understand that this is a unique skill set, that is valuable, useful, and needed. When you were going through the program, was there any specific part of it that helped you gain confidence? The strategic mapping, because she was able to turn around and sell 3 sessions and almost make her investment back within the first month of learning. She had the skills, but the way the framework was laid out helped her to decide to sell this service. One of those clients even hired her as a retainer client, so she made her money back in the first week of the program. Of the 5 components of the program, you weren’t interested in the HR component. But as we talked about HR in a way that was different than your initial impression, you seemed to open up to it. What did you learn as you went through the module? She was resistant to HR because she assumed it was mostly people talking about their feelings. It was broken down really well into hiring, organizational structure, reporting, client communication, and team communication, all of which was relevant. It was helpful in her current DOO role. What are some of the services you have offered as you have gone through the program? Out of a scarcity mindset she said yes to everyone to begin with, so she had a DOO client, project management work, one-off projects. Has since refined that into what she loves which is building out automated processes and workflows. Currently in the business bootcamp phase of the program, where she has to commit to one model, which was the push she needed to realize that project work is her favorite. Thinks she will also offer products to her services because most people need these types of processes. She took the strategic mapping piece, tweaked it, and turned it into a process inventory. Any thoughts on if the product space will or won't work for you? Her biggest issue is not doing “the thing” because she gets in her own head about things not being perfect. She knows that she just needs to create the template and get it out there, and worry about tweaking it later. She likes the idea as a way to help people who aren’t her ideal client yet. Since you sold strategic mapping sessions so quickly, do you have any tips on selling without feeling like an imposter? She had some bad sales calls, where she felt like she tripped over herself, but thanks to the program and the mindset block she has come a long way in not wallowing in her embarrassment. She had a lot of referrals from her previous business. One of her former coworkers convinced her of the opportunity that was out there for someone who can look at what the client wants to do, turn it into a plan, and then hound them until everyone accomplishes the plan. She didn’t believe him at first, but found that it was true. She worked strategic mapping into all of these leads and the sales process was so natural. What has been the impact of the DOO certification on your life? One of her big struggles coming out of the army was looking for a life that felt like service, seeing that from CEOs and visionaries, and feeling like it was not for people like her. This program has been instrumental in seeing that she can create a life that is authentic to what she wants within the parameters that she needs. Realizing that she is able to use her operational skill sets to assist people who are doing world changing things, and how that is service in itself. What would you say to someone who is considering the DOO certification program? Absolutely do it. It could not have been easier to make her money back by just following the steps. The community of supportive peers has helped in so many ways. Being in community with people like her who were on the same journey has been totally worth it. As we get ready for the next round of the DOO certification program, I hope you will join us for the Scope Creep Solution. Connect with Courtney Courtney Waid is the founder and CEO of First Turn Operations which specializes in creating automated workflows for impact-driven businesses. A West Point graduate, Iraq war veteran, and former Army officer, Courtney left a career in the military to focus on her kids when balancing family and deployments became too difficult. Since then, she's been passionate about helping business owners create more efficient processes so they can fulfill their missions while still having time for the people and activities they love. Courtney currently lives outside Ft Worth, TX with her husband, 4 kids, and a menagerie of farm animals. Marissa Kai talks with Emily Marashian in today's episode. Emily is a Registered Dietitian, Nutritionist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor who practices a weight-inclusive nutrition approach following the Health at Every Size® principles. Her passion for both nutrition and running began during her years as an Army Intelligence Officer. This led her to pursue a second career in nutrition after leaving the service, but years of trying to conform to strict military, dietitian, and runner identities caused Emily to adopt a very disordered relationship with food and body. Emily has worked hard to overcome her challenges since discovering Intuitive Eating. She now helps runners to stop compulsively overeating and to hit their running goals by helping them shift their mindset away from restrictive dieting behaviors and learn how to eat intuitively. Emily lives in sunny San Diego, CA with her husband and 3-year-old son, and is due with another baby boy this October. “When I first started my IG feed, I just wanted to share, share, share. As a dietitian, I think many of us can relate that we're just full of information, but I wasn't solving any real problem and I wasn't providing any real value. You have to learn to plant the seed gently sometimes and just leave it at that.” -Emily Marashian Topics Discussed: The ups and downs of finding your true niche Showing up in your stories Getting a head start on building your private practice Goal setting when you're expecting a new baby Guest Resources: Connect with Emily on IG: @running.nutritionist Free Resources from Libby: Are you ready to start your journey? On this week's episode of Truth About War, we joined by Rachel Washburn, a former Army Intelligence Officer who is truly a pioneer for women in the military. Todd Uterstaedt is the co-founder and CEO of From Founder To CEO which aims to help founders transition from starting a company to building a company by supporting to build a leader in them. They are personal development accelerators who focuses on the growth of the founder’s personal development as their business grows. He is also the host of the podcast “From Founder To CEO” which has over a hundred episodes with big guests and tons of positive reviews. In addition, Todd was an Army Intelligence Officer, too, before his world opened up to entrepreneurship and podcasting. “I'm a former Army officer, but I think I was a lousy leader. And so, I started the podcast...” Todd mentioned that he used his issues in leadership to share it on his podcast in order to help himself as well as the founders to overcome it and be better as leaders. Then, he enrolled in Podcasting A to Z and learned how to start one. “And then over the course of time, we get 15 to 20 pitches a day now of people who come on the show.“ Like the other podcasters who are just starting, he also faced difficulties in maintaining the consistency. He experienced being rejected by humiliation as he invites clients to come to his show. But that didn’t stop him from persevering until clients are the ones who look for him. “In the beginning, I thought I needed to share my expertise. But in reality, I get so many emails from people who say to me-- ‘Todd, I love how you let your guests talk and how it's not about you.’” This put him into a realization that the reason why people are listening to his podcast is that they want to know the insight of both him and his guest. He needs to be a good listener so that he may give emphasis and deliver to the audience the strong points of the guest. Over the course of time, Todd frequently receives feedback from his guests on how they are being contacted by big companies who heard their guesting episodes in his podcast. “I suppose what had happened was some of the other media outlets were paying attention to some of the guests because I do also like to bring on founders who don't have a lot of visibility yet but have a great story to tell. And so, some of them listen to the show, and then their message gets amplified, and that helps them build their business more, which is very gratifying to me.” Todd has shared more stories in the episode of the impact and how lives were changed through his podcast. Truly, the podcast’s name speaks that it is a great blessing to small businesses to stay motivated as founders persevere and strive to become a CEO. He was the rising star who walked away from the spotlight. Jason Kander was running to be Kansas City's next mayor and there were whispers of a presidential run in 2020. That's when he decided to drop out of the race and confront PTSD and depression from his service in Afghanistan as an Army Intelligence Officer. Almost a year later, the former Missouri Secretary of State is back in the public eye with a new mission at the Veterans Community Project. We visited VCP at 89th and Troost in Kansas City for a conversation about mental health, help for vets and what it's like watching politics as an outsider. Isaac and his team of over 400 have earned $93 million in venture financing as it helps take care of over 45,000 employees in all 50 states. In this interview Isaac gets very specific about his feelings of failure, being real with his team when things are not going well, and how he has structure his team for growth.
