In today's episode, we bring you a dynamic, thought-provoking Q&A from opening night of THE TERRITORY, the new double Sundance prize-winning documentary, on August 19, 2022. THE TERRITORY is an urgent, and immersive look inside the struggle by the Indigenous Uru-eu-wau-wau people to protect their territory in the Northern Brazilian Amazon Rainforest from invasion and deforestation. Filmmaker and cinematographer Alex Pritz spent three years embedded in the Indigenous community before ultimately turning the cameras over to the Uru-eu-wau-wau leaders to capture their own efforts, resulting in a thrilling and inspiring chronicle of agency and resistance. We were joined for the Q&A by Alex Pritz and Neidinha Bandeira, one of the fearless activists followed in the film. Bandeira has spent the last four decades advocating for Indigenous people in the region and is the founder of the nonprofit group Kandidé Ethno-Environmental Defense Association. The Q&A was co-presented by the Rainforest Alliance and moderated by their Creative Design & Editorial Lead, Michael Gibbons. Michael Gibbons and his wife own Papa Haydn and Jo Bar, which have been a staples in the Portland Food world since they met each other as employees at Papa Haydn many cakes and drinks ago. Since then, they've largely stepped away from the day to day operations to leave that responsibility in younger, capable hands, including their son Brendan. We talk to Michael about his trajectory from a kid in LA slinging burgers to Reed College in the 70s to his building of Papa Haydn's bar program as a stop between semesters, which of course turned into the love of his life with the love of his life for years and years. After playing 47 games for the Carlton Blues, Michael Gibbons was a surprise delisting at the conclusion of the 2021 season. The 26-year-old livewire forward opens up about his dramatic three years at Princes Park, where he was coached by both Brendon Bolton and David Teague during the Blues' rebuild.Gibbons came to the club following a standout five seasons at Williamstown Football Club from 2014 to 2018, taking out the JJ Liston Medal in 2016 and 2018, which is awarded to the best player in the VFL.On multiple occasions, Gibbons felt he was on the verge of being recruited only to have his heart broken on draft night. Finally, persistence paid off when Carlton took him as a rookie at the beginning of 2019.Gibbons quickly established himself as a regular in a pressure-forward role in the Carlton Blues' team, but a freak injury at training caused his hamstring to “explode” in his third season, which Gibbons concedes may have cost him his AFL career.Getting axed came as a “shock” to Gibbons, and he details his heart-to-heart conversation with now Blues head coach Michael Voss. One of Gibbons' biggest supporters has been former Carlton captain and cancer survivor Sam Docherty, who has provided a rare perspective on the value of a footy career.
