We are moving to the center of the country with this episode. Before the beginning of the Civil War through the decade of the 1870s, the Army was busy in the center of the country. This episode will serve as bridge between the end of the Civil War and the Sioux and Lakota Wars of the 1870s. As settlement stretched west, there were clashes between native peoples and the Army. In a familiar story, dissatisfaction with treaties and the ongoing conquest of native lands, forced the hand of many Tribes, leading to war. The Fetterman fight, and Washita are bellwethers for the future of native peoples being able to coexist with Euro-American settlers. Take a listen! Have a question, comment, concern, or compliment? Host and guest share Denver Public School roots followed by decades as Colorado attorneys. We talk about America's most important new lawyer, Special Counsel Jack Smith.   In this candid discussion, ADL's Regional Director of Mountain States Division talks turkey about Donald Trump, January 6 and the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville in August of 2017. The ADL takes on Trump when he displays his bigotry and Scott Levin explains the process.   These are best and worst of times when it comes to antisemitism in Colorado. We celebrate midterm victories by Governor Polis, AG Weiser, and SoS Griswold. Adam Frisch almost beat Boebert and could've done so if he got the backing of Ross Kaminsky at KOA who instead told fans to vote all GOP in CO.   We discuss Ross Kaminsky and Krista Kafer, two Colorado media members who backed Trump in 2020 after not backing him in 2016. WTF Kafer was subject of Rabbi Rick Rheins' sermon (Episode 119) in which Scott Levin and DU Prof. Nader Hashemi also mentioned.   Kafer also came to the defense of Steve Durham who was a guest on that same memorable Episode 119. Scott Levin reveals how Durham's harsh position softened after the podcast discussions. Sadly, Krista Kafer and Colorado Springs Gazette like pretending Nazis came from political left. https://www.denverpost.com/2022/10/25/steve-durham-facism-socialism-genocide-state-board-education/   Learn about ADL's decision to tell Fox to fire Tucker Carlson. Kanye West and Kyrie Irving are discussed. Dave Chappelle's SNL monologue is played and criticized. Not cool Dave. Not helpful. Tropes get people killed.   ADL has weighed in on Elon Musk. Is Musk bigoted against Jews? Time will tell, but there are many clues to analyze. Like Henry Ford, Musk has built a huge car company, and is now branching out to a gigantic media platform. Toward what end? The ADL is concerned. https://www.adl.org/resources/blog/5-things-adl-watching-following-elon-musk-buying-twitter   Mount Evans is now destined to become Mount Blue Sky which is a great thing. Governor Evans disgraced his office when he authorized the slaughter of 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho people at the Sand Creek Massacre. The ADL was part of the process. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Unlikely Candidates over Zoom video.Coming off their multi-city tour with legendary band 311, The Unlikely Candidates were welcomed home with open arms as fans and Fort Worth residents listened to new and fan-favorite music from their album. The party included performances from the band, a specialty drink, raffles, and a champagne toast to celebrate this milestone. “Panther Island,” which features 8 new and 3 previously released songs, was written over Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic including “High Low,” which was recorded in lead singer Kyle Morris' closet. “The record is a kaleidoscopic landscape of genre and style that changes from song to song, a greatest hits of the sonic worlds the band has inhabited over the years,” says Morris. “Thematically it's just as varied, shifting from songs about the chaos on the streets and loneliness behind the phone screens of America during the pandemic, to humorous tales of twenty-something malaise and the many ways the heart breaks; when love or loved ones are lost. At the heart of this album is the ethos of taking a bad situation and making something of it. It was written during the pandemic while the world was shut down, by a band who has hit enough roadblocks to delay a debut album nine years.” Following the release of their album, The Unlikely Candidates are going back on the road, making stops in the Midwest, the Mountain States, and Canada. All upcoming tour dates can be found here. TUC has previously toured with Fall Out Boy, The Dirty Heads, and Sublime with Rome, just to name a few. “Its been an honor working with The Unlikely Candidates and I am so very proud for them to release their first full length album,” said Ryan Metheny, Director of Product Management at The Orchard. “After so many ups and downs over the last few years, they continue to blow me away with how hard they work and get through any roadblock put in front of them. It will be a great joy to see them play these songs in front of their fans this summer.” Signed to Another Century, a subsidiary of Sony Music, The Unlikely Candidates are best known for their 2019 hit “Novocaine,” which reached #1 on the Alternative Charts. The song was also featured in the Season 4 trailer of HULU's Veronica Mars, and on Now That's What I Call Music, with The music video becoming the #6 most viewed Alternative video of 2019 on VEVO.We want to hear from you! How much would average people need to save to receive the retirement that Anthony Fauci promised? Adam Andrzejewski, the founder of Open the Books, reports that Anthony Fauci's retirement is projected to exceed $350,000.00 per year with annual cost of living increases. At an assumed 7% distribution rate, everyday folks would have to build a $5,000,000.00 nest egg. Jen Hulan, new partnership liaison with The Kim Monson Show, joins Kim in studio. Jen invites entrepreneurs and business owners to reach out to her at kimmonson.com/contact for more information regarding becoming a partner/sponsor of The Kim Monson Show. Jen owned Waters Edge Winery. During the COVID/Wuhan China virus reaction disruption, she determined that her business was essential and remained open. Jen describes what happened to her with “visits” from bureaucrats from Tri-County Health, the Colorado Attorney General, and people reporting her to Tri-County Health. On New Year's Eve, Jen toasted Tri-County Health becoming No-County Health as the three counties that comprised Tri-County have left. Will explains the details of four cases that Mountain States Legal Foundation is working on. The second is a suit against the state of Colorado on behalf of Native Americans to stop the State's ban on schools using Native American mascots. The third is a lawsuit against the Biden administration stemming from the March 2021 COVID relief package, which offered debt relief to farmers and ranchers, except for white/Caucasian farmers. The last is a case about to be launched against the Colorado prison system on behalf of a white prison guard whose “diversity, equity and inclusion” training was so anti-white that it forced him out of a job.

In this episode Phoenix interviews master bladesmith, bowyer, and instructor of primitive skills, the amazing Daniel Olsen, for a fascinating interview. Dan talks about how he got into primitive skills work and how he created his Traditions School for children in the greater Boise, ID area. He talks about his grounded and practical education philosophy which enables children to experience complex laws of physics, math, and the sciences through direct hands on experiences, often tied into fun ballistic activities including ballistics, archery, and other primitive skills. Dan also shares about his journey into becoming a blacksmith/bladesmith and gets into some details around the craft, as well as his experience with making bows. For all you knife lovers, primitive skill lovers, and lovers of education, this podcast is for you. Daniel Olsen began his journey into traditional skills in the foothills of Central Utah with his grandmother as his guide. She grew up herding sheep in the mountains of Idaho and Foraging The Hills for most of the food that she and her family ate. She passed this knowledge on to her grandchildren through her example. Daniel has lived in many different environments including the high deserts of Utah, Nevada, the Pacific Northwest in Washington, Idaho and Alaska, Upstate New York, the desert southwest and the tropical northeast coast of Australia. When Consolidation Isn't About Pricing Leverage: How Ballad Health Merged Two Systems to Reduce Costs and Reinvent Rural Healthcare

Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders

In the United States, more than 90% of the landmass is rural. And in rural communities from coast to coast, the challenges in delivering healthcare can be very different than the urban and suburban centers that get most of the attention. There's untapped opportunity in reimagining healthcare business models and the technology that will enable them in rural areas, according to Ballad Health CEO, Alan Levine. And he should know – in the three years since Ballad was formed by merging Wellmont Health System and Mountain States Health Alliance, it has had exceptional success rewriting the rules of rural healthcare.Among some of its visible and measurable improvements, Ballad Health has decreased pricing by an average of 17% for urgent care and other physician-based services, cut its mortality rate for trauma in half, reduced low acuity admissions by 16,000 per year, and saved the region in which it operates more than $200 million per year in healthcare costs. And it's doing this with only a 20% commercial payer mix.In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Alan talks to Keith Figlioli about how Ballad Health is achieving these milestones by better understanding the dynamics of rural healthcare and making big structural changes to address them. He shares specifics about many of the changes Ballad has already implemented and his plans to continue down this revolutionary path. Their conversation covers topics including:Trading competition for regulation. In the areas of Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky where Wellmont and Mountain States operated, only 50% of hospital beds were occupied and rates were declining. To survive and give it stability, Wellmont looked to be acquired by an outside system, until Mountain States stepped in with a unique solution to merge. But the FTC opposed the merger every step, forcing legislation in Virginia and Tennessee followed by approval from both states' governors, attorneys general and health commissioners. Against significant odds, the merger was approved with Ballad agreeing to cap pricing and price increases at a rate well below the hospital consumer price index (CPI).Eliminating duplication. Many of the structural changes at Ballad Health revolved around reducing duplicate services. Intense competition between Mountain States and Wellmont forced one system to always keep up with the other. As a result, a small town like Greenville, TN had two hospitals a little over a mile apart which had both lost $70 million at 30% capacity in the years leading up to the merger. One of Ballad's key goals is to implement a more rational approach and business model that makes sense for rural areas.Transforming from hospitals to health improvement. While reducing duplication, Ballad is thoughtfully applying the resources it saves to improve the health of its communities upstream. For example, in one region where it consolidated hospitals, it converted one building into a residential facility for women who are pregnant, homeless, drug addicted or have other needs. It gives these women housing security, food security and resources to help ensure their babies are born into a healthy situation. The new competitive landscape. Alan says his biggest competition is no longer the health system or physician group down the street. It's the tech-enabled company across the country or a retail chain that could provide primary care. And unlike health systems in urban areas that can offset the loss of a patient with populated growth, there's nothing to replace that loss in a rural area. This is why technology will play a significant role in the transformation of rural healthcare. To hear Alan and Keith talk about these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard.

I’m not allowed to have favorite episodes and honestly, each one is pretty different. But my interview with Bud Isaacs is certainly one of my favorites. Mines grad, Vietnam vet, a career in oil and gas, lover of the outdoors, and most recently advocate for the water shed on the western slope. The co-authored book- “Oil and Water” is a fascinating dive into the world of water and what keeps 40 million Americans hydrated from the Colorado River. Water is THE crisis of the next 50 years and the book is a pretty powerful introduction to the concepts and thoughts around how society gets its water. Oh yeah, and he, his wife and most of his direct family had COVID in a February. Lots of learnings, insights and just a wonderfully enjoyable day for me to spend with Bud at his house. #hottakeoftheday podcast Episode 59 w/Bud Isaacs https://youtu.be/bsH5CDLiyOs   Audio Podcast   About Bud Vernon A. This week, get out your traveling bee suits, because we are going to visit three different beekeepers in across the country. This time of the year, beekeepers in the US and northern hemisphere are all very busy, but are they all doing the same? Are they all experiencing the same things? In this episode we set off to find out. We talk with beekeepers from North Carolina, Northeast Ohio and the western slope of the  Rockies in Colorado. Each of these beekeepers have a unique, and somewhat tricky environment to raise bees and they are as much different from each other as they are alike to each other. We brought them all together and their conversations and observations are fascinating! First, we meet Mark Smith, in Locust, North Carolina who is a chemical free Beekeeper. Not treatment free, but chemical free. He raises his own queens and lives in a very isolated location so varroa isn’t a constant threat. He hasn’t bought a bee since 2011.   Then we travel north to Northeast Ohio, near Kent and meet up with Tracy Alarcon. He too raises his own queens, but isn’t even close to being isolated. He has lots of migratory beekeepers driving by all season so has constant varroa pressure. He’s looking for hygienic behavior in his bees and does all the right things for honey and pests. Then we head out west to visit with Ed Colby on the western slope of Colorado. Ed runs about 100 colonies and has them in yards ranging from 5500’ to 9000’, which gives him a six-week difference between bee yards in the spring and fall. Does he worry about varroa? You bet.  His whole operation is overrun with commercial area outfits so he has constant varroa pressure. We hope you enjoy listening to their stories. ______________ This episode is brought to you by Global Patties! Come October 25, 2013, the eyes of the Jewish world will be focused on Denver, as the Mile High City hosts the annual Jewish National Fund national conference.  JNF, which is also known by the initials KKL (for its Hebrew name - Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael), is one of the largest and most prominent Israeli environmental groups, tracing its origins back to the days of Theodor Herzl and the Zionist Congresses (during which time it was tasked with buying land in Israel). Today, JNF is mostly often associated with reforestation efforts in Israel (planting 250 million trees in the last 100 years).  But JNF is also deeply involved with other missions crucial to Israel and its people. Boaz Meir, the recently-appointed director of JNF's Mountain States region (encompassing Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho), joins us in the studio to discuss what JNF looks like today; the work of its Mountain States regional office; and what we can expect at the national conference this October. One of the most exciting endeavors that Boaz discusses with us is the work that the Mountain States office is doing to lend its support to JNF's campaign to populate the desert regions of Israel.     This week's show is the final episode of our first season.
