Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 2024 35:05

Are you one of those people who find the world of Western classical music a bit snobbish and inaccessible? The Proms – or the BBC Promenade Concerts to give the world's largest music festival its full name - might help you change your mind. For eight weeks every summer, the Royal Albert Hall in London opens its doors to all-comers and puts on a music show that is varied and wide-ranging. Some music lovers want to get as close as possible to the conductor. They are happy to stand up to listen to orchestras and soloists playing symphonies, overtures and concertos by the world's top composers – all for just £5.The festival has been going since 1895 and has always tried to be informal and relatively cheap. The Prommers – the classical music groupies who like to stand – typify this relaxed ethos. Before performances, they shout out jokes and every time the lid of the piano is lifted they shout “heave” in unison. One of the highlights of the Proms is the Last Night, which has a worldwide screening. Popular classics are played while the Prommers wave flags and sing along to the catchy tunes. The Last Night is so popular with audiences that a ballot has to be held - several months in advance - so that everyone who wants a ticket has a chance of getting one. But it has been criticised by some for being too British and jingoistic. In recent years the Proms have grown so that they now include simultaneous screenings in other British cities, lunchtime concerts, talks, children's Proms, film and rock music, musicals, Indian classical music, and even tunes from the BBC series “Dr Who”. The expanding offer is proving popular with audiences old and new. Perhaps classical music isn't quite so elitist, after all.词汇表snobbish 势利的,自傲的inaccessible 难以接触的,难懂的to change one's mind 改变某人对某事的看法all-comers 所有来者wide-ranging 范围广的a conductor (乐队)指挥an orchestra 管弦乐队a soloist 独唱者,独奏者a symphony 交响乐,交响曲an overture 序曲,序乐a concertos 协奏曲a composer 作曲者,作曲家a groupie 乐团迷,狂热追随者to heave 举起in unison 齐声,一致地a screening 播放catchy 琅琅上口的jingoistic 极端爱国主义的,大国主义的elitist 精英化的,高级的

Enjoy the Podcast.

It’s time for Steve and Remfry to delve into their big box of classic albums and pull out another one of their all time favorite records. We’re going slightly off piste this week, as we delve deep into the career of electro pop innovators turned synth rock megastars Depeche Mode. In this first part, you might be surprised to learn, we have picked the band's 1987 sixth album Music For The Masses. Sandwiched between the groundbreaking Black Celebration and the commercial juggernaut of Violator, MFTM is scandalously overlooked in the DM back catalogue, and we discuss why it is the best (YOU HEARD ME, BEST) Depeche Mode album. Starting with a quick potted history of the band, and of electronic music, we look at the ongoing improvements in the studio, the increasing involvement of Alan Wilder, how the finished album started to change the perception of the band, the tour that followed the record and, of course, the huge Pasadena Rose Bowl show that cemented the band as a stadium act and was captured on the infamous 101 live tour document. Before teasing the second part of this double bill, where we will be looking at Violator; Part two is available at patreon.com/riotactpodcast. I know I had previously indicated that I had blown my wad for a while but apparently I had one last shot I needed to unload. There really was a substantial amount of EDM, Dance and Club tracks I needed to pull together and get out into the world. Hence we've got D M M [Dance Music For the Masses], which is a massive set of current dance-club favorites. This is the perfect companion piece the recently released Spring Break 2018. Between now and mid-May I don't really have anything on my plate. I may eek out another Trash Disco set but that's a big maybe. I've about worn out all the Diva Hall of Fame entries for the moment though there are several worth updating because of new releases like Selena Gomez, P!nk, Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson and if I did, it would only be to add one or two additional new tracks. So, I'm not sure if it's worth it. Don't even ask for Taylor Swift because I don't want to get sued as her legal team is very litigious otherwise, I would. She certainly belongs in there but I would need assurances in writing from her that they wouldn't go after me and that's not going to happen. Many have asked about Amber but that's also not going to happen as she and I had a very public falling out many years ago. I suppose there are several Legacy tributes I'd like to take on like Coldplay or even OneRepublic; basically, artists who I am a big fan of and have a stealthy back-catalog of dance hits. Feel free to throw any suggestions my way. I take everything into consideration. Otherwise, the next Gay Days and the 2018 Catch-up are the only things on my radar. I'll be in Dallas the first week of June for a small family gathering to bury my father's ashes so that may delay this year's Gay Pride sets but once again, I'll play it by ear. Truth be told, I've been so productive this year and people are only now catching up with my releases, I think there is more than enough to keep everybody occupied as I'm certainly not the only podcast you listen to anyway. D M M is a massive 2 1/2 hour set and I've listened to it multiple times to ensure there were no errors during the export process. I mixed up the genres as best I could to hopefully keep it interesting. I am currently looking at other DJ promo services and there is one that's caught my eye that I may sign up for because of the combination of mainstream, bootlegs, and mashups that I'm not seeing anywhere else. I'll decide in May. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and as always...ENJOY! I know I said I was stepping back for a bit, but the dance music scene isn't slowing down, and neither are we. So, here's another killer set, D M M [Dance Music For the Masses]. Think of it as the cooler cousin to our Spring Break 2018 set. It's a 2.5-hour ride through what's genuinely worth listening to right now. I've gone through it a few times to make sure everything's on point. No fluff, no filler. What's In the Mix? You've got a blend of tracks that cover all corners of dance music. Joe Stone and Cr3on's "Is It Really Love" is in there, and it's a smooth starter. It's got a vibe that's hard to pin down, somewhere between Future House and your standard dance track. It sets the mood without trying too hard, you know? And speaking of setting moods, Dua Lipa's “IDGAF” gets a remix treatment that takes it to a whole new level. Charlie Lane and Jason Reilly knew what they were doing. It's not just a remix; it's like they reinvented the wheel without making it square. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh8b8x9o1qI Ever listened to Years & Years' "Sanctify" by OffSet? If you haven't, you're missing out. OffSet takes a soulful track and twists it into something you'd want to hear at a club at 1 a.m. It's got complexity without being pretentious—a tough line to walk in dance music. Also, shoutout to M-22 and Medina's "First Time." This track sits right in the sweet spot between Future House and Tech House. It's versatile, making it a good fit whether you're chilling at home or letting loose on the dance floor. Oh, and if you're into the mainstream stuff, David Guetta and Sia's "Flames" gets a Pink Panda makeover that's worth a listen. It's the same song you know and love, but with a little extra something that just clicks. Wrapping It Up Look, there's more I could say, but the playlist speaks for itself. All these tracks, whether original or remixed, come from people who live and breathe dance music. So give D M M [Dance Music For the Masses] a spin and let the beats talk. Until the next time...ENJOY! Episode 13: Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses (1987) Part 2 A week has gone by since Brian and Sarah started discussing this late-80s classic by the boys from Basildon known as Depeche Mode. This episode finds our hosts ready to dive into the second side of the Mode's sixth album, but not before making a few more comments on their latest offering, "Spirit." Part 3 (Continued): Track by Track The five songs of the album's second side are examined one by one. Which track does Sarah consider to be the quintessential Depeche Mode song? Which video delights the hosts? Who has a problem with the song order on the second side? And what are those Russian voices saying at the beginning of "To Have and to Hold?" The answers can be found here! Behind the Wheel I Want You Now To Have and to Hold Nothing Pimpf Part 4: Final Grade Both Brian and Sarah are extremely fond of this album, as it has been a part of their lives for many years. So how difficult was it for them to review the album from a more objective point of view? And does Sarah finally decide to give her first rating of five record adapters? Part 5: Extra Credit The cassette and CD versions of "Music for the Masses" contain four bonus tracks. Brian asks for Sarah's opinions on each of these songs, and then poses the question of whether the album would have been helped or hindered if they had been a part of the official album. Episode 12: Depeche Mode -  Music for the Masses (1987) Part 1 After a brief hiatus from the podcast, Brian and Sarah sit down to discuss one of their all-time favorite bands, Depeche Mode. The selected album is the 1987 opus, "Music for the Masses." However, before discussing the band's sixth album, the hosts can't resist taking a few minutes to share their initial thoughts on the fourteenth Depeche Mode album, "Spirit," which was released just two weeks ago. But then the focus shifts back to the 1987 and the album which marked some significant changes for Depeche Mode. Part 1: Background Brian fills us in on the whens and wheres of the album's recording, and Sarah explains one big difference between the making of Music of the Masses and previous Depeche Mode albums. Brian also reveals where this album and its related singles charted back in the day. Part 2: Personal History Sarah explains how she had what she'll claim to be a "backup copy" of this album, and muses as to when she actually received it. Brian tells a story common for the era, of being surprised by the album's release when visiting a local record store. Then he does the unthinkable and confesses to a crime! Part 3: Track by Track Brian and Sarah discuss each of the five songs on the classic album's first side. In doing so, they bring up the topics of drugs, religion, driving, iconic videos, cringe-worthy videos, and of course music! Find out which songs on the first side are standouts for the hosts, and which fall lower on the scale.
