The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

For decades, the innovative guitarist Marc Ribot has been a first-call session musician, lending his singular instrumental voice to recordings by Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett and many more. On his brand new album, Map Of A Blue City (New West Records), Ribot adds his actual voice to the music for his first ever vocal album, one that took roughly 30 years to finally see the light of day. In our conversation, he talks about working with the late, great Hal Willner (who worked on the early stages of ...Blue City), the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, and why Tom Waits is such a uniquely effective bandleader.  The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. For the most up-to-date news about all things RSD, visit RecordStoreDay.com   Please consider subscribing to our podcast wherever you get podcasts, and tell your friends, we're here every week and we love making new friends.

The podcast episode features Jesse Rifkin, the owner of Walk on the Wildside Tours NYC, a music history walking tour company in New York City, and the author of the book 'This Must Be the Place: Music, Community, and Vanishing Spaces in New York City.' Rifkin shares his background, including his consultancy roles as a pop music historian and his 12 years as a touring musician. They discuss his first concert experience, watching Bob Dylan with Ani DiFranco as the opening act at the Filene Center in Vienna, Virginia, and the interesting intersections his life has had with notable music historians like Alan Lomax.Rifkin recounts his experience attending a unique U2 concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, highlighting how seeing a globally famous band in an intimate venue was a surreal and memorable experience. He emphasizes the different dimensions of enjoying massive arena shows versus small, underground music scenes. He talks about his favorite bands, particularly Akron Family and other experimental groups, often performing at DIY venues like Silent Barn and emphasizing how these experiences felt more personal and impactful. The conversation shifts to Jesse's walking tours, which often focus on the punk and post-punk scenes in NYC, featuring iconic sites like CBGB. He discusses the importance of understanding the human and local context behind legendary music and bands, offering a more tangible and relatable connection to this history. His tours aim to demystify the grandiosity of famous musicians by highlighting their humble beginnings in intimate settings. Finally, Jesse talks about his book and its evolution from his extensive tours and Instagram presence, which caught the attention of his editor in 2019. He details the content of the book, which spans 60 years of music history, categorizing different NYC music scenes, and offers practical insights into creating community-driven music venues. Jesse's mission is to show that music and performance spaces can be accessible and transformative, urging people to see the possibility within DIY approaches to music and community building.BANDS: Akron Family, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Blondie, Bob Dylan, Castanets, The Cure, Elephant 6 Recording Company, Grateful Dead, Lynyrd Skynard, Neutral Milk Hotel, New York Dolls, Olivia Tremor Control, Patti Smith, Ramones, Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, U2, Velvet Underground, Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, Woods.VENUES: 171A, Apollo Theater, Bowery Ballroom, CBGB, Death by Audio, Jelly NYC, Silent Barn, Tonic, Uncle Paulie's, Wolf Trap. PROJECT AUDION 64: Philip Marlowe, "The Three Wise Guys" Project Audion's Christmas gift this year is a lost episode of the classic detective drama The Adventures of Philip Marlowe with a holiday theme! Because Audion's previous Philip Marlowe restoration became its most popular episode ever, we returned to our archives to unearth a Marlowe script which hasn't been performed or heard since December 19, 1948 -- "The Three Wise Guys." The Adventures of Philip Marlowe ran for three years on network radio, with new noir-ish tales from author Raymond Chandler's detective. In this episode, it was the night before Christmas and (as Marlowe says) "a sweet girl was in trouble.  But that didn't mean a thing to the second-story man, the four-flusher in spats, and the ex-Chicago cabbie -- until, one way or the other, they all got into the spirit of the thing..." Our cast, which recorded this episode live in the classic radio drama style, included:   Andy Hartson-Bowyer in Virginia Tom Konkle in California Hunter Adkins in Maryland Gregg McAfee in California Jessica Matthews in Texas Rhiannon McAfee in California Donna Patton in Tennessee Paul Kovit in New York Music, sounds, production, direction by Larry Groebe

For two decades Allen Gogarty rocked the bars of New York, mixing his own compositions with covers as he built a sold career as one of the most sought-after Irish entertainers in the tri-state area. Then a heart attack in early December forced him into a break from performing, and friends are now organising a benefit gig for the popular Meathman as he plots his return to the stage. He joined me from Queens to tell me how it all went down, and how he plans to be back and gigging by St. Patrick's Day - and why we should all be paying a bit more attention to our health. People living in the Midwest have an opportunity to see and hear Dorothy Scott perform in her adopted state of Wisconsin, up in beautiful and art-filled Door County. It is really no coincidence that Dorothy would make her home here.  Like the spectacular scenery, the art shops, restaurants with goats grazing on grass roofs, open air concerts under stars and a variety of interesting people who either vacation here or also call it home, Dorothy's eclectic style of performance fits right in.   She is a veteran of the New York Music scene with Jeff Buckley, Susan McKeown, Sloan Wainright to name a few.  But it is here, where art and raw nature intertwine that Scott has hit her stride.  One would think that a star of her caliber would be stand-offish, but Dorothy Scott, for all her ebullience and showcraft is off-stage the kind of person you'd wish you had as that "cool" Aunt.  The one who knew a thing or two about life and was going to give you the right advice without preaching.  She approaches her craft with humility honed from years of experience in the harsh business world of music.  She has outlasted (and outlived) many contemporaries who could not bend when the hard wind would blow.    Dorothy's website link is here.Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. With these self-released titles complete, she initiated her own solo tours, playing across the US in venues large and small, even cutting her teeth in small dive bar venues with tough crowds. In this episode of Roots to Grooves musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley explore "Mitski's" background, her creative approaches and they spin a selection of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

"Crumb" are an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. The four piece originally met in 2016 when they were attending Tufts University in Massachusetts. While continuing their studies each of the members were playing in separate bands, dabbling in Jazz, Soul and Rock before they came together to form "Crumb". The group started off by recording two EP's and embarking on a US tour before putting out their full length debut album "Jinx" in 2019. They have been described as psychedelic rock, dream pop and even trip hop, with some commentators likening them to Canadian outfit "Men I Trust" due to their often warm, groovy and jazzy tones. In this episode Jay and Jesse discuss the bands' formation, peculiar studio techniques and spin their favorite tracks from Crumb's discography. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

It’s been that long since America’s most trusted newscaster said, “And that’s the way it is,” while all of America nodded yes.At a time when we seem to be living in two separate realities, despite the polarization, more than two thirds of us long for a trustworthy, independent, credible authority to help us address those three key questions – what’s so, so what and now what?Meanwhile, the COVID crisis is being used to accelerate the “global reset” agenda of the World Economic Forum and those who want to impose a top down global authority to rule the world. Well, as the Swami says, “If we don’t want dystopia, we need to offer an alternative – dat-topia.” Our guest this week, Steven Jay, is dedicating his life work to creating a new media platform where creative ideas can come out to play, and where we can together reset the HUMAN HEART as we shift from domination to collaboration, and where we can step out of the matrix and into the creatrix.Steven describes Mobilized as a “new kind of media for a newer, kinder world inspired by nature, powered by people, and empowered by imagination.” He writes, “Mobilized is a hands-on learning network for imagination and human potential. To inspire, empower and embrace the genius within us to create a world that works for all people, our planet and for our common purpose.”In addition to being Founder and Creative Director of Mobilized, Steven Jay is a Grammy Award-winning producer, musician, composer, and creative director. His projects have been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MTV, and VH1. He founded the Global Entertainment and Media Summit and the New York Music and Internet Expo: The beginning of a digital music revolution. He also was a Co-Executive Producer of the “When Comedy Went to School” documentary that captured the spirit and excitement of the Catskill Comics as they inspired generations and leagues of comedians. It featured Jerry Lewis, Larry King, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, and many others.Steven was Associate Producer and Project Creator of Les Paul and Friends: American Made, World Played (2005), the Grammy Award-Winning recording to honor the innovator whose contributions to the entertainment worlds include the solid body electric guitar and multi-track recording. This recording featured a host of celebrated performing artists including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, Sting, Buddy Guy, and Peter Frampton. After a life-changing event several years ago, Steven dedicated his life and work to bringing about a world that works for all. Hey everybody,My names Pieter and I've got a horrible crush on the random noise of our musical landscape.1. Quintronics - Drum Buddy Intro (Reversed and Reverbed & Kick Opener)"Electrical energy, when closely examined, is in fact more similar in its complexity to a plant or an animal form than it is to the mechanical devices or computer machines with which it is usually associated. It is not necessarily more complex, but equally microcosmically [sp] complex." - Drum Buddy Island 2. Herbert - Moving Like a Train Herbert is one of the rare agitprop artists in the underground who is beyond convention, this though is a perfectly straightforward piece of soul - of such quality I get bubbly by the second half's panoramic heights. 3. Henrick Schwarz - You Rock, I Rock, We RockHenrick had a much raved about album last year, DJ Kicks, which was by all means OK. This is a snippet of a live set he played in the promotion of that release.4. Charles Leonard - Funky Driver on a Funky Bus Unfortunately I could find very little information about this artist, which isn't to say that he's unknown but I think that his story is untold. What I can find seems to hint at a storied history that is familiar to one person at least. This song features the vocals of an actual bus driver, W.C. Stone. I'm not sure if that is the real name as it might be a bit of word play around the idea of shit. No disrespect intended - just ambling thoughts. < I talk too much. The volume of my speech may lead one to suspect I'm an idiot >5. Mavis Staples - On My WayLong time soul and gospel singer gives us a moving album for our modern world. There is no time imaginable, when meaningful music powerfully spoken is not important to our essential nature as social animals. Liner notes claim the album was Anti-Produced by the Ry Cooder, anti-production my friends, fall in love with it. 6. Life in a Blender - Dead Get DownLife in a Blender is well worth the effort of tracking down and independently verifying, in terms of quality, their varied output. Hmm. They're from Brooklyn!7. Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My GodYeah, you've heard this before. I just have to share it before it gets totally played out. Thanks to the "Hits in the Car" for turning me on to it. Unfortunately I call them chefs on the voice bit, yep - sorry.8. Fabulous Entourage - Theme SongHuh.. ..they're from New York too.. .. hmmm.To kick off the accidental study in New York Music;"New York City rockers The Fabulous Entourage serve up an irrepressible blend of throbbing ... "9. Keb' Mo - Kind Hearted WomanAccidental New York Review takes a back seat for the California blues man whose being putting out disc after disc of hard luck licks since the 80's.10. Matt & Kim - Verbs Before NounsCatastrophe New York Showcase continues - and they're from Brooklyn too. These two are awesome. Seriously I wish I had half the joy of life these two have.11. DAT Politics - Viper EyesNot from New York - but across the pond and another reason to love France. This is like Matt & Kim, if they replaced the Casio with an industrial strength sampler. Simply wonderful.12. Hefner - Hymn for the CigarettesA Peelie band from the late 90's to the turn of the century. These guys are routinely underrated even by the obscurist aficionados (like me) who troll the Peel selections for the rare sounds.13. Thieves Like Us - Drugs in my BodyThe impartial declaration of New Yorker Artist due to Habitation, doth define them as members of the City. Yep more New York! Well, they came from Berlin and they are claiming to move to France soon. So that is Ok, they live here right now.14. Lady Bug Transistor - Here Comes the RainThe incremental catalog of bands that are from around here: Lady Bug is from the Brooklyn too - this is the soft mellow song on this weeks podcast. Enjoy your temporary respite. 15. Soophie Nun Squad - Donkey CallThe Little Rock based Punk Group recently called it quits - I don't know how big a following they had from their town, but I want them to know that I really appreciated their talents and that they will be missed.16. Cocorosie - Noah's ArkThe kooky combination of two girls; one from Fort Dodge, Iowa, while the other hails from the Big Island, Hawaii are placed into a crazy Brooklyn art collective. See what happens when they stop acting nice and start acting like artists. Yes; Brooklyn is in New York.Backing tracks:Mala - Digital MystikzDj Hell - Never be Alone AgainOctoProject & Blackmoth Super Rainbow - Psychic SwellingImage credits:Drum Buddy Index Page - http://www.drumbuddy.com/
