Greg and Mere dive deeper into the film library of Nico Mastorakis with 'Blind Date' (1984). This movie is just good, not so clean fun! Is it a Thriller? Sci-Fi? Drama? Absurdist Comedy? As we have learned about the films of Mastorakis it is everything at once, nothings off the table. On the b-side we talk about film school and work experiences we have had over the years. From the sublime to the ridiculous, noir comes in many forms. Nick Langdon joins us this week to discuss Back to the Wall (1958), directed by Édouard Molinaro and In the Cold of the Night (1990), directed by Nico Mastorakis. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Back to the Wall by skipping ahead to the 1:03:36 mark, and for In the Cold of the Night by skipping ahead to 1:46:08. Writer, critic, and editor of the Electric Dreams newsletter Fred Barrett joins the show to discuss the neon-drenched, saxophone-laden, softcore erotic thrills of Nico Mastorakis' In the Cold of the Night. The film is a hazy, dreamlike cut of meathead De Palma references, prolonged sex scenes, and fascinating gestures toward deep state mind control conspiracies that make for a truly singular thriller punching well above its presumed weight. We disucss the history of director Nico Mastorakis, and how his time working withing the Greek junta regime informs the film's intricate subplots. Then we examine at the movie's absorbing atmosphere, and how it steadily brings you into its elevated, uncanny rhythms. Finally, we look at the film's intriguing explorations of pleasure and eroticism and how it pushes past the boundaries of "good taste" to arrive at fascinating, titillating places courtesy of too-close close-ups, a well-utilized bowl of marbles, and more. This week in physical media expands the gauntlet between masterpieces, greatness, exploitation and outright garbage. In other words, Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski have a little something for everyone. They include a film from the ‘60s that was lost until the ‘90s, one of the first films from Jonathan Demme, one of the last films of Howard Hawks and hopefully not the last from Philip Kaufmann. There's a box set of the works of Nico Mastorakis and a director's cut featuring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. Two films from the great runs of Frank Oz and Kevin Costner get 4K upgrades and Peter tells you about one of the sexiest scenes he's ever seen. Spoiler that it involves neither an infamous 1980 musical with The Village People or any of the Jaws sequels; both of which practically get their own episodes here. 0:00 - Intro 1:00 – Arrow (Red Line 7000, The Nico Mastorakis Collection, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. 4K) 16:09 - The Film Desk (The Plot Against Harry) 24:07 - Media Book (Last Embrace 4K) 29:07 – MVD (The Linguini Incident) 38:07 – Kino (Bwana Devil, Can't Stop the Music 4K, No Way Out 4K, In and Out 4K, Girl on the Bridge, Twisted) 1:35:15 – Universal (Jaws 3-Film Collection 4K) 2:00:19 – New Theatrical Titles on Blu-ray 2:07:25 – New Blu-ray Announcements
The whole Junk Food Dinner crew is back this month, with two roller flicks and one rock 'n roller flick.Up first, Roger Corman. AIP and the guy that directed Fade to Black team up to get in on the popular roller derby trend of the 1970's with Unholy Rollers from 1972 about a woman trying to become a star in the roller world while navigating creepy promoters and jealous teammates. Next, the BBC and director Alan Clarke give British youths a glimpse into their dystopian future with Stars of the Roller State Disco from 1984, a made-for-TV movie about a group of young people who are forced to hang out in a roller rink/arcade, while they wait for shitty jobs to become available. And finally, a mysterious punk rocker on the run from the law teams up with an awkward young woman to find love and rebellion in 2020's Dinner in America from the director of Snack Shack and The Bunny Game. All this plus discussion of Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness, In a Violent Nature, and Parker watching Lord of the Rings and NOT falling asleep. Plus sports gambling chat, Severin releasing an obscure 60's mummy movie, the sequel to Nobody, and Three Stooges and Nico Mastorakis blu-ray box sets coming soon.LISTEN NOW!MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. Note: This episode originally aired on October 16, 2014. -- We continue our October scary-movie-a-thon-thing with the terrifying and impossible to alphabetize cyber thriller .com for Murder. Directed by schlock semi-master Nico Mastorakis, this ripoff of Halloween, Psycho, Rear Window, etc. stars Nastassja Kinski (Cat People), Nicollette Sheridan (former Michael Bolton paramour), Roger Daltrey (Vampirella, The Who), and Huey Lewis (of the News). When hotshot architect Ben (Daltrey) leaves his temporarily handicapped wive Sondra (Kinski) in the care of her sister and a completely computerized mansion named Hal, she uses the opportunity to antagonize murderers in an online sex chatroom. When she annoys the wrong murderer—a hacker who goes by Werther—he uses the opportunity to send her video footage of a murder (encrypted as a racist public domain cartoon) and then go after her as well! Meanwhile FBI Agent Matheson (Lewis) takes the case despite lacking a basic understanding of computers and technology. Join Nick, Chris, and returning special guest Sarah Long (from Episode 42: American Strays) as we try and figure out how to add blood effects to chatoom text, why the director thought the delete key could possibly execute any sort of command, and the murderer's extremely dubious time estimate for death by wrist knick.
We're back after a month away, and we're coming in hot with an expanded format. It's basically just smashing the long and short shows together into one thing, but it sounds more professional if you talk about formatting. That of course doesn't mean that the talk about nonsense garbage has stopped, or really been focused in any way, as this one goes everywhere. We talk about the oft-maligned 1996 Jerry O'Connell vehicle Joe's Apartment, the oeuvre of MTV Films in general, Keebler's discontinued line of pizza chips, the fact that we're apparently the number one source for information on the song "Strut" by Steven Seagal and Lady Saw, the 1986 Nico Mastorakis film The Zero Boys starring Kelli Maroney and Joe Estevez, the song "Destination Understanding" from Island of Death, new music from Novatron, Home Front, and Mats Gustafsson & Joachim Nordwall, the 1991 song "Joyride (I Saw the Film)" by Tribe, and the recent passing of noted director/wonderful maniac William Friedkin. Finally, in our main event, we discuss Sean's pick for this show: the 1982 John Frankenheimer movie The Challenge, a star-studded affair scored by Jerry Goldsmith, written by John Sayles, and starring Toshiro Mifune (and Scott Glenn, but you know... Mifune). Despite being loaded on all fronts with talent, the film flopped due to being absolutely swallowed up by the unreal number of megahits released in the summer of 1982. A true shame because this is a really good movie, and we think this is a really good episode. Enjoy? In the late 1960s, the widow of President Kennedy had a secret romance with Aristotle Onassis, who was then the richest man in the world. Simon Watts spoke to Nico Mastorakis, a Greek journalist who visited Onassis's yacht in disguise to confirm the relationship and secure a sensational scoop. Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis would go on to marry in October 1968 in a spectacular ceremony on the private island of Skorpios. PHOTO:Jackie Kennedy with Aristotle Onassis in 1968. Vacation Month continues with a trip to beautiful - and exceedingly queer - Mykonos and Nico Mastorakis' notorious exploitation/video nasty film, Island of Death. This is the Stefon of horror films because it has EVERYTHING: bestiality, incest, targeted homophobic violence, misogyny, rape and so much more (please pay attention to the content warning!)After the film's lengthy production history and categorization in the UK's notorious list of video nasties (thanks for the background info, Anya Stanley!), we compare our readings of the film. Trace says it's merely shock value while Joe argues it's a comedy about religious hypocrisy (Mastorakis himself would say it's nothing more than an opportunity to make money!)Plus: comparisons to Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, Haneke, and Last House on the Left; Trace's forgetful history with onscreen bestiality; and logistical advice for water sports. The Wind. On this episode we speak to Director Nico Mastorakis. Nico Mastorakis, a veteran in the independent business of film, founder and owner of Omega Pictures and Omega Entertainment, has been writing and directing movies for over 25 years. This is his 24th feature, with "Blind Date", "The Wind", "Zero Boys" and "In The Cold Of The Night" being some of his critically acclaimed, award-winning thrillers. He has written 32 screen plays and produced 32 features, among which is "The Greek Tycoon", starring Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset. His movies have been released worldwide by prime distributors and in the U.S. by major studios (Universal, Paramount, United Artists, New Line) and have had both artistic and commercial success in every country. ".com For Murder" is his tribute to Alfred Hitchcock (the resemblance of the title to "Dial M For Murder" alone is an indication) and although dealing with a visually exciting subject, Nico directed this in the classical form of the master's suspense thrillers, casting it with classy actors and maintaining throughout the look of a modern gothic.

In the late 1960s, JFK's widow had a secret romance with the Greek shipping magnate who was then the world's richest man. Witness speaks to Nico Mastorakis, a Greek journalist who visited Onassis' yacht in disguise in order to confirm the affair. (Photo: Jackie Kennedy with Aristotle Onassis in 1968. We continue our October scary-movie-a-thon-thing with the terrifying and impossible to alphabetize cyber thriller .com for Murder. Join Nick, Chris, and returning special guest Sarah Long (from Episode 42: American Strays) as we try and figure out how to add blood effects to chatoom text, why the director thought the delete key could possibly execute any sort of command, and the murderer’s extremely dubious time estimate for death by wrist knick.
Where we discuss Island of Death (1975) by Nico Mastorakis and also the state of film exhibition.
