Fantastical Truth
313. Should Christian-Made Stories Evangelize Nonbelievers?

Fantastical Truth

On May 14, we've had one Ascension Day, yes.[1. Photo by Chase Kennedy on Unsplash.] What about second Ascension Day (May 21)? In either case, Ascension Day marks the lesser-known sequel to Easter Sunday, honoring the time when Jesus Christ returned to Heaven. His disciples recorded His famous last words, including His command: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” How does this Great Commission affect our fantastical stories? Episode sponsors All that Glows by Lauren Smyth Realm Makers 2026 Conference & Expo Author Update from Author Media The Talismiths: The Secret Saboteur by M. L. Hodder Mission update New at Lorehaven: newly upgraded Library book search Subscribe free to get updates and join the Lorehaven Guild 1. Let's define the Great Commission. Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” —Matthew 28:16–20, ESV This command is first for Christ's disciples and then all Christians. It's not just about getting people saved but a lifelong faith practice. This starts at home but expands, including baptism and teaching. It doesn't overrule orders to live simply, work hard, raise families. It doesn't overrule God's first “commission,” the Creation Mandate. In fact, this helps restore people to Jesus so we can do that calling. 2. How do some stories try to act this out? In the past, evangelical Christian fiction focuses on nonbelievers. They want to tell good stories, yes, but also get the reader saved. Sometimes the hero is a nonbeliever forced to confront faith issues. In fantasy, we met Jesus-allegories or find prayer is a weapon. In sci-fi, we learned aliens are real (demons) and Jesus is better. Other stories have featured “backslidden” people who need faith. And then other stories push back with more subtle approaches. The rise of YA brings simpler themes, often identity and courage. Romantasy may reduce “gospel” content, favoring virtues and love. Before: overt gospel about God. After: subtle morals about us. In either case, the original “evangelical” impulse may remain. Authors understandably want to do more than entertain readers. 3. Great stories reflect all God's commands. It's important to note differences between these two commands. So far as we know, the Creation Mandate is forever, an eternal call. The Great Commission is temporary . It won't be around forever. This doesn't make the Mandate more important. It does balance. That's why the apostles spoke often about families and hard work. We have seen older novels that valued “message” over excellence. If we feel guilty over not witnessing, we may want to compensate. A novel may make us feel we've “evangelized” or helped others. But sometimes, even then, novels like that don't fulfill that goal. Stephen enjoys novels that can reflect both these high callings. And yet only the Mandate tells creators to make great stories. My own novel does star space missionaries, yet has bigger ideas. The point isn't “share the gospel.” It's, “Here's how that can look.” And then, “What are the costs to the human heroes who do this?” That story is mainly for Christian readers. Others may not get it. That's okay. In my view, we need more stories “inside the club.” And yet Christians can bless nonbelievers just with great stories. They can reflect biblical truth, even gospel, yet have other goals. These can serve as pre-evangelism, or common grace for them. “Common grace” means the ways God blesses even nonbelievers. He sends rain and sunshine, good government, widespread virtue. And He enables good culture-making in a sinful world to bless us. Great stories, even if they don't “evangelize,” can help evangelists. And either way, we follow both commands and glorify our Creator. Com station Top question for listeners Did a great novel help you get saved? Or draw closer to Jesus? Next on Fantastical Truth Summer has returned. That often brings seasonal vacations that give you downtime in a car or airplane, maybe on a nice beach somewhere. You already know that's a great opportunity to catch up on reading. So what are some tips and tricks to refocus on reading, finding the best fantastical novels and gaining the most from these worlds?

She emphasizes the importance of church as a community for believers to grow, engage, and equip one another in their faith. The conversation delves into the need for intimacy in worship, the role of church leaders, and the necessity of fostering a dependency on the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, Ashley argues that the church should focus on maturing believers rather than solely reaching out to non-believers.Chapters00:00 Rethinking the Purpose of Church06:09 Engaging the Body of Christ11:53 Equipping Believers for Ministry17:36 The Role of Personal Experience in FaithTakeaways-The church's primary function may not be to serve non-believers.-Believers should be equipped for ministry and growth.-Intimacy in worship should not be interrupted by announcements.-Engaging the congregation can transform the church experience.-The role of church leaders is to empower the body of Christ.-Unity in faith is essential for the church's mission.-Believers need to foster a personal relationship with God.-Church should be a house of prayer for all believers.-Every believer has a role in the church community.-The church should focus on spiritual growth and maturity. keywordschurch, believers, non-believers, community, faith, ministry, engagement, equipping, unity, spiritual growthConnect with me:https://linktr.ee/daily_encouragement_ashleyRumble Account: https://rumble.com/user/AshleyCampbellFacebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/dailyencouragementwithashleycampbell/Want to purchase a signed copy of my book?https://buy.stripe.com/7sI8xdg6F2kZgSIfZ6ORRead the reviews on Amazon? https://a.co/d/gwyks9gWant to send me a financial donation because you value what I am doing on social media?https://buy.stripe.com/eVacNt3jTbVz9qg4gkWant to join my Facebook group that will equip you with the knowledge of the History of the United States, what the Constitution means and how you can preserve this great nation we live in?Join my paid group today! Let's take a deep and thoughtful look at one of the Jewish calendar's most joyful holidays and ask some surprisingly serious questions: Why do we celebrate Jewish holidays at all? What is Purim actually trying to teach us — and how is its lesson unlike any other in the Torah? We explore the unique place Megillat Esther holds in Jewish literature, and what it means that God's name never appears in it — not once. Unlike the five books of Moses, the Purim story doesn't announce the divine. It hides it. And maybe that's exactly the point. We also sit with a harder truth: that today, many of us are holding onto a rope of faith — but that rope is shaking, and shaking violently. In a world where belief feels uncertain, are there ways beyond crisis and foxholes to find our way back to meaning? And what can the story of Esther, Mordecai, and a near-annihilation of the Jewish people teach us about that search?

Pastor Dustin explained that gratitude is far more than a feeling or a seasonal practice—it's a way of life that has the power to reshape how we see everything. When we fix our attention on what God has given us, complaining becomes harder and our hearts begin to shift. The 25 Days of Gratitude Challenge was designed not as a short-term exercise, but as a catalyst for lasting transformation. Changing our patterns is difficult, but it's essential if we want to live in the fullness God intends.Just as understanding flight changes the way we see airplanes, encountering Christ changes the way we see our entire lives. Paul experienced this firsthand. Once a Pharisee who valued status and outward achievement, his meeting with Jesus completely reframed his perspective. Writing to a culture obsessed with honor and appearance, Paul reminded the church in Corinth—and us—that Christ came in humility and suffering, not worldly glory. Before Christ, we tend to see our time, talents, and treasures as ours alone. But in Christ, everything becomes a gift to steward. Our time is entrusted to us, our abilities are on loan from God, and our resources become tools for His kingdom. Stories from people in our own church, like Roger and Jason, show how talents and resources can be used to serve others and give glory to God.This matters because we are called to be Christ's ambassadors—people who carry His message to a world longing for hope. We don't save anyone; only Christ does. But we are invited to stand in the gap, pointing others back to Him. Generosity, then, isn't simply an obligation. It's a privilege and a sign of spiritual maturity. For believers, the invitation is to open our hands and grow in generosity and sanctification. And for those who don't yet know Christ, the call is to stop searching for peace and belonging apart from Him, and find it in the One who became sin for us so that we might be made right with God.[00:00] - Welcome[00:24] - The Challenge of Gratitude[01:23] - Changing Patterns and Life Transitions[02:22] - Questions About Flight and Learning[03:58] - Discovering How Things Really Work[05:42] - Paul's Transformation and the Gospel[07:17] - How to Read and Understand Scripture[09:00] - Paul's Background and Hypocrisy[11:04] - Corinth: Wealth, Honor, and Culture[12:20] - False Teachers and True Apostleship[13:44] - The Way Things Were: Old Perspective[16:24] - The Way Things Are Now: New Life[18:54] - Stories of Stewardship in the Church[22:36] - Treasures and Generosity[23:25] - Why the Change Matters[24:00] - Ambassadors of Reconciliation[27:06] - The Bobsled Analogy: God's Equipping[32:39] - Challenges for Believers[35:56] - Invitation to Non-Believers[39:29] - Prayer, Response, and Generosity Opportunity[40:47] - Closing and Sending Forth

Who Will Miss the Rapture? For generations, Christians have debated this question: will only unbelievers be left behind, or could many believers also miss the moment because they weren't watching, waiting, and ready?Video Version Available immediately upon Release at 9:00pm ET/8:00pm CT at https://youtu.be/SXZ3WXL2YQsThis powerful episode takes you deep into the heart of Scripture and prophecy to uncover the truth. The Apostle Paul's assurance in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 describes believers being “caught up” to meet the Lord in the air, but it does not say vanish or disappear — it says changed.Jesus Himself warned in Matthew 24 that His coming would be like a thief in the night, catching the unprepared off guard. And in Matthew 25, the parable of the Ten Virgins shows half of those who claimed to be waiting for the Bridegroom were left out because they were not ready. But is it possible this warning applies not just to non-believers, but to many Christians who dismiss the Rapture, deny its imminence, or live without watching for His return? Extra-biblical writings such as Enoch describe the righteous being hidden before judgment falls, while Jasher echoes the days of Noah — where most ignored the warnings until it was too late. Even early Christian texts like the Shepherd of Hermas emphasize readiness and purity for those who expect to be gathered. This episode will challenge the church with difficult but necessary questions:• Is the Rapture unconditional for all Christians, or a reward for the watchful and faithful?• Could some Christians be changed but not immediately taken, much like Christ Himself remained for 40 days before ascending?• Does rejecting prophecy and refusing to watch place believers at risk of being left behind?Evangelical Press Association members JD Williams and David Paxton bring you this urgent and uncompromising message, presented from a Conservative Evangelical Christian perspective. Produced by KRRB Revelation Radio, both locally and nationally recognized, and a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, this broadcast calls believers everywhere to examine their faith and prepare their hearts. The time is short. The trumpet will sound. The only question is: Will you be ready when it does?

The Death of Charlie Kirk and America's Two Wars

The rifle crack that killed Charlie Kirk in Utah was an earthquake. He collapsed with a wound to the neck, was rushed to a hospital, and pronounced dead. But as with any quake, the most dangerous part isn't the first tremor. It's the aftershocks — the cheers, denunciations, and cries of martyrdom — that destabilize what remains. The quake itself is clear: a man shot from a rooftop. The aftershocks are harder. They reveal that America is split not just by politics but by two different realities. On the left, war is material. Activists talk about oligarchs, billionaires, oppression, and identity. The phrase “words are violence” reflects the belief that hate speech or misgendering can wound like blows. That's why many celebrated Kirk's death: not as cosmic justice, but as one more fascist gone, history pushing forward. On the right, war is spiritual. For Kirk's evangelical base, this was not politics but cosmic combat. The shooter was a vessel of the Enemy — in Christian vocabulary, Satan. Kirk's death is framed as martyrdom. But martyrdom shifts meaning across traditions. In Christianity, a martyr (martys, “witness”) endures death without renouncing faith: John the Baptist beheaded, Jesus crucified, apostles tortured. Martyrdom is witness, not suicide. In Islam, martyrdom (shahid) also means witness, often extending to those who die in jihad — even suicide bombers in extremist usage. In revolutionary politics, martyrdom is memory: fallen fighters fuel the cause, but there's no heaven, only history. So Kirk becomes what you already believed: demagogue, casualty, or witness to truth. The word sin deepens the rift. Christians call everyone sinners — “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” To them, it's solidarity. To outsiders, it sounds like disgust. If your identity — gay, trans, poly — is central to who you are, being told it is sin feels like annihilation. Christians believe they're offering diagnosis and hope. Nonbelievers hear condemnation. That explains the venom online. For ex-evangelicals, “sin” reopens old wounds. Kirk's death felt like justice. And to evangelicals, that rage confirms their belief: demons shriek when exposed. The Catholic Church complicates it further. Pope Francis offers blessings and softer words, but the sacraments remain strict. Communion requires confession and absolution. Divorce without annulment or living in “grave sin” bars you from the Eucharist. To Catholics, this is consistency. To outsiders, it's a tease: welcomed in, denied at the table. Some argue Kirk's death cripples his movement. History suggests the opposite. Martyrdom rarely kills movements. Kill Jesus, the Church spreads. Kill apostles, saints multiply. Martyrdom fertilizes. MAGA is not a cult of one man. It is a hydra: Trump, Kirk, Carlson, RFK — chop off a head, more sprout. Millions of believers see demons behind the celebration of Kirk's killing. Online glee looks to them like possession — like The Exorcist on the Georgetown steps. This is why comparing today to Spain in 1936 — fascists vs. communists — misses the point. That was a material war. Today, one side fights oppression and billionaires. The other believes it is fighting Satan himself. That's why Kirk's assassination will not silence his cause. To some he was a demagogue, to others a martyr. And in the Christian story, martyrdom is never the end. It is the engine of new beginnings. The earthquake was a sniper's shot. The aftershocks are the wars of meaning now shaking the ground. America is two nations: one fighting people and power, the other fighting demons and destiny. And aftershocks, unlike earthquakes, don't stop until the ground itself gives way.

HE IS RISEN! Haven't forgotten that, have you? Just because we celebrated Easter and the Easter message of resurrection even though virtual, Sunday, April 20, I just can't let you and me ever forget that. It's not just April 20, it's every day of 12 MONTHS.HE is the only man who ever triumphed over death and the grave, none before Him and none since. THE ONLY ONE! That resurrection, that bodily resurrection, that ascension, that VERIFIED – WITNESSED resurrection and ascension is crucial, pivotal, revolutionary, life changing, essential and indispensable to the belief of every Christian. Morning, noon and night, every day of all 365, the living, resurrected Christ LIVES within the hearts of every Christian believer. And every believer, the Christ has promised, will live with Him now, in this life, and in the life WITH HIM to come. Incredible, is it not?Wonderful, glorious, jubilant, to every believer. But to the natural man:FOOLISHNESS, Absolute and altogether foolishness. It is absolutely ridiculous, says a natural man, an atheist or agnostic, that a mere human being, a carpenter from Nazareth no less, who came from dust and shall return to dust as the scriptures say should rise from the dead. It is just simply not possible. And of course, the myth of the resurrection and the myth of the virgin birth and even for many the myth of the crucifixion all are nothing more than fairytales or as the scriptures say IDLE tales. One can readily see how a natural man, one not drawn by THE HOLY SPIRIT, with eyes closed and ears blocked would scoff, mock and ridicule the EASTER story. If you want, as physicist and astronomer Steven Hawkins would say to believe in a myth of fairytale, that is your right. But the world of science says Hawkins, astronomy and the so called reason and rationality of the mind dismiss a resurrection possibility out of hand. It didn't happen, says Hawkins. IT CAN'T HAPPEN! And, to that, the Apostle Paul says if in fact the resurrection did not happen, then:YOUR FAITH IS IN VAIN. Worthless. No better than any other belief system, if even that. If Christ be not risen, any professing believer is not only deceived but becomes him or herself a DECEIVER. Such a believer testifies to a lie, perhaps the biggest lie in all of human history andconsequently, becomes a conspirator in the spread of evil and duplicity. So that, not only is the believer's faith in vain, but the guilt of the false belief of others lies upon him or her as well. When you or I profess to be Christian, we must therefore champion the resurrection with all of our heart, soul and mind. There can be no doubt. NONE!Perhaps that is why the nonbeliever dislikes, even hates Christianity and as a consequence the Christians who follow it. Nonbelievers hate the concept of sin. They see no need for forgiveness. They deeply resent the demands of Christianity and the Christ who boldly proclaims:NO MAN OR WOMAN COMES TO THE FATHER BUT BY ME! Nonbelievers hate that demand, that exclusivity. For it rules out everything else, every other form of belief, in fact every other religion. The crucifixion at Golgotha was merely the death of one man, perhaps even justified. The man who died was a revolutionary, a seditionist, constantly conspiring to get THE PEOPLE to resist and rebel against Rome, the political system, Herod and Pilot on the one hand and the religious authorities, the Pharisees and Sadducees on the other. And he even admitted he came to stir up trouble, to turn one family member against another. He called Herod the Tetrarch of Rome a FOX, cunning, deceiving and lying. The religious establishment despised him because he referred to them over and again as nothing more than hypocrites, or whited sepulchers, empty inside. If any mere man deserved to die, and die in an excruciating way, it was this mirror man Jesus of Nazareth. It was with HIM then as it is now love or hate. You embraced him, believed in him, gave him your all. Or you despised, even hated him nothing more than a rebel or rabble rouser, deluded, even perhaps insane a man in no way to be taken seriously. WITH OR AGAINST. And, written off by Him who again boldly even arrogantly stated:HE THAT IS NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME.The world, the secularists, the natural men and women accommodate Christianity one weekend, three days each year. From Good Friday through resurrection Sunday, those who believe in fairytales are allowed their celebration. But then comes Monday and it is back to business as usual, criticizing Christianity, attempting at every hand to get Christians, Christian beliefs and Christianity out of the public square, out of the marketplace, confined if at all possible to the four walls of a church. They are determined, these rabid, progressive secularists to curtail or eliminate Christian witness, any form of evangelism for they the enemy have determined that all Christian speech is:HATE SPEECH.They are determined to destroy, eliminate any form of testimony, any message which states:CHRIST IS RISEN Even as they scoff at the message:UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE WITH THE MIGHTY CHILD O'ER HIS FOES Wherever he was buried, there he remains they say. From the time he was laid in a tomb, everything else, EVERYTHING is nothing more than myth, fairytale, idle tale WHY!But, natural man, like it or not, he did in fact rise again. HE WAS SEEN first by the women Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of James and Salome, and Joanna, and other women. They first saw the empty tomb as they brought spices, the announcement of the resurrection by the angel and these women were the very first EVANGELISTS. They were the first to go and tell. They told Peter, and the disciples, 11 of them and others that at the tomb:HE IS NOT THERE!HE IS RISEN! He was there, back for some 40 days before an ascension. He fellowshipped with his disciples and with others. He was there in the flesh for he was hungry and thirsty. He ate and drank and he showed them his nail pierced body and the wounded side where he was pierced. He returned as a man alive and ascended in glory as the eternal Christ. For Christian believers, it is true, all of it. It is fact. It is the foundation of belief. He was alive in the flesh before and after the crucifixion and now lives eternally and forever with his saints to reign. So, the Christian joyfully proclaims Easter Sunday and every other day:HALLELUJAHCHRIST AROSE We the believers celebrated the Easter weekend, mourning at the remembrance of the crucifixion on Good Friday, but joyfully and jubilantly celebrated HIS Resurrection on Easter Sunday. That resurrection message was heard that day the world over. The world made time, even priority at least to recognize that incredible message. But now, only mere days later, it is business as usual. Perhaps even we who believe become gradually less open, less aggressive in our testimony, perhaps even unwilling to STAND for what we believe, in Him. Perhaps, gradually, we become more defensive, even withdrawn, unwilling to testify and confront. Perhaps the message of those three potent days becomes a matter of memory, fading, the power of it all dissipating, the courage to fight the fight of faith waning. So, just a few days after the Easter celebration, it is well for us to celebrate again, and again and again, and every day the fact, the most supreme fact in all of human history that:HE IS RISEN.That, as the old hymn says, Christ the Lord is risen today, and every day. Hallelujah! Let us with all our hearts proclaim that message and live that message. It is the greatest fact in human history! So, from the virgin birth, to a powerful human life symbolist, to the crucifixion offering forgiveness for all mankind through the shed blood, to the resurrection, believe it, proclaim it, and live it every day of the year. And one more thing. There is yet to come the rapture. This, the crucified and resurrected Christ will return again for his church, for us. Perhaps that day is near and we should be ready. The rapture is yet another fairytale, so says the natural man. But for Christians, it is the ultimate event, the culmination of everything. If you are Christian, if you believe, then the Holy Spirit bears witness, fortifies your belief, encourages you and strengthens you and makes certain that you live joyfully in the faith, hope and love of the Christian journey. Easter was celebrated just a few days ago. But Easter is not a day, it is a way of life. Celebrate morning, noon and night:HE IS RISEN HALLELUJAH CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY AND EVERY DAY!

(Speaking with Nancy was such a highlight of this year. In addition to all we discussed in this raw, beautiful, candid, downright funny conversation, I'm glad to report that subsequent to when we spoke, Nancy was able to "ring the bell" as a cancer survivor!)   We're joined by author, essayist, investigative journalist and the gloriously feral Nancy French. We discuss Nancy's new memoir, GHOSTED: AN AMERICAN STORY, which involves deeply personal topics such as her experiences with sexual abuse, faith struggles, being a ghostwriter for politicians, and increasing political turmoil. Nancy also talks about navigating her long-standing personal and professional relationships amid the Trumpification of the Republican party; how the party has drifted away from folks like her even though Nancy's positions and philosophy haven't changed; and how her Christian faith has played a significant role in the journey. We also candidly explore the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, the complexities in religious institutions, and being resilient in troubled times.   Nancy French is a five-time New York Times bestselling author, essayist, investigative journalist, and storyteller at the Moth. She's published op-eds and articles in the Washington Post, USA Today, Time and many other publications. Her investigative journalism into abuse at Kanakuk Kamps appeared on the front page of USA Today. Nancy is also the co-author of The After Party with friend of the pod Curtis Chang and she's the author of the new memoir GHOSTED: AN AMERICAN STORY.   01:20 Nancy French: A Brief Introduction;  05:14 The Art of Ghostwriting;  09:53 The Journey of Discovery and Art;  13:45 The Struggles of Writing Your Own Story;  19:38 The Challenges of Confronting Past Abuse;  31:10 The Power of Love and Relationships;  37:47 The Struggle with Faith and the Church;  40:25 Reflections on Christian Faith and History;  41:16 Experiences of Divine Intervention;  42:07 Discussing Faith with Non-Believers;  46:19 Political Writing and Its Consequences;  50:12 The Shift in Political Identity (Despite Not Having Changed);  52:11 The Impact of Political Polarization;  55:34 The Power of Human Connection Across Differences   We're on YouTube!  https://www.youtube.com/@politicsandreligion     Talkin' Politics & Religion Without Killin' Each Other is part of The Democracy Group, a network of podcasts that examines what's broken in our democracy and how we can work together to fix it.   We're on Patreon!
