Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones (/nɑːˈsɪər/; born September 14, 1973), known professionally as Nas (/nɑːz/), is an American rapper and entrepreneur. Rooted in East Coast hip hop, he is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time.[2][3][4] The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas began his musical career in 1989 under the moniker "Nasty Nas", and recorded demos under the wing of fellow East Coast rapper Large Professor. Nas made his recording debut on Professor's group, Main Source's 1991 song "Live at the Barbeque". Nas's debut album, Illmatic (1994) is considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time;[5][6] in 2021, the album was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.[7] His second album, It Was Written (1996) debuted atop the Billboard 200 and sold over a quarter-million units in its first week; the album, along with its single "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)" (featuring Lauryn Hill), propelled Nas into mainstream success.[8] Both released in 1999, Nas's third and fourth albums I Am and Nastradamus were criticized as inconsistent and too commercially oriented, with critics and audiences fearing a decline in the quality of his output. From 2001 to 2005, Nas was involved in a highly publicized feud with Jay-Z, popularized by the diss track "Ether". The feud, along with Nas's subsequent releases Stillmatic (2001), God's Son (2002), and the double album Street's Disciple (2004) helped him restore his critical standing. Nas then reconciled with Jay-Z prior to signing with his then-spearheaded label, Def Jam Recordings in 2006; he adopted a more provocative, politicized direction with the albums Hip Hop Is Dead (2006) and his untitled ninth studio album (2008). In 2010, Nas released Distant Relatives, a collaborative album with Damian Marley that donated its royalties to active African charities. His tenth studio album, Life Is Good (2012) was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. After thirteen nominations, his thirteenth studio album, King's Disease (2020) won his first Grammy for Best Rap Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. His five subsequent albums—King's Disease II, Magic (2021), King's Disease III (2022), Magic 2, and Magic 3 (2023)—each received positive reception and were produced entirely by producer Hit-Boy. Nas has been second ranked by The Source on their "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time" list in 2012, fourth on MTV's Annual Hottest MCs in the Game list in 2013, and was named the "Greatest MC of All Time" by About.com in 2014. The following year, Nas was featured on the "10 Best Rappers of All Time" list by Billboard. Outside of recording, he serves as associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine, and co-founded its spin-off division Mass Appeal Records, a record label which has signed artists including Dave East, N.O.R.E., Run the Jewels, and Swizz Beatz, among others.[9] Nas has released seventeen studio albums since 1994, ten of which are certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum in the U.S. PICTURE: By All-Pro Reels - https://www.flickr.com/photos/joeglo/52380600682/, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=123357625

Don Was & The Pan Detroit EnsembleMaggie LePique speaks with Don Was about his new musical group Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble. Don & the Ensemble are embarking on a West Coast run of concert dates in September 2024. Made up of stellar jazz musicians from his Detroit hometown, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble will perform a mix of new originals, interpretations of songs written by artists like Yusef Lateef, Olu Dara, and Henry Threadgill, and of course updated cuts from albums that Don recorded with Orquestra Was and Was (Not Was). Don's Detroit roots still run deep and, we explore those roots and highlight his most recent musical love letter to that great city, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, and so much more. More on Don Was:Don Was is one of music's most significant artists and executives, exceling in multiple roles and serving as one of the industry's beacons for integrity and forward-thinking. Was is also caretaker for Blue Note's singular and historic catalogue of music, and is burnishing the label's 80-year legacy by overseeing ongoing and extensive reissue campaigns that serve audiences in both the analogue and digital realms. One of Was's most noteworthy musical associations of the past two decades is with The Rolling Stones, for whom he's produced their last four studio albums and a host of other studio and live recordings. Beginning with Voodoo Lounge in 1994 and continuing through Bridges To Babylon in 1997, A Bigger Bang in 2005 and Blue And Lonesome in 2016, Was's work with the Stones has resulted in Platinum and Gold certifications in dozens of countries. He also oversees the band's historic reissues, including Exile on Main Street in 2010, Some Girls in 2011 and Sticky Fingers in 2015, searching the band's vaults and master tapes for lost jewels and bringing the projects to completion. He produced the band's 2020 surprise single, “Living In A Ghost Town,” which was released amidst the global pandemic in April of that year.Source: https://donwas.com/https://www.bluenote.com/Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. On 6 May, around 600 people dressed in black, some of whom were masked, marched in Paris carrying black flags marked with the Celtic cross: a symbol that's been appropriated by white nationalists and far-right extremists in Europe. Their demonstration had been approved by Paris' police prefect Laurent Nuñez. There was an immediate outcry from France's left-wing politicians and activists because several demonstrations against Macron's pension reform had been denied permits. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stepped in and banned far-right extremist demonstrations; he said he'll let the courts decide if they can be held.  My question to you was: what was Marine Le Pen's response to the demonstration? Marine Le Pen, as you know, is the former president and current parliamentary leader of the far-right National Rally party. Additionally, you were to tell us the names of the two men who worked as treasurers for her party - and who participated in the march. The answer is: To quote our article: “Marine le Pen, the parliamentary leader of the far-right National Rally, said the protesters should not have worn masks.  "These provocations cannot be tolerated. It's inadmissible," she said, also defending herself against accusations that she was close to two of the participants, Axel Loustau and Olivier Duguet, who worked as party treasurers.”In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word ‘patriotism' ?” The question was suggested by RFI Listeners Club member Radhakrishna Pillai from Kerala State in India. The winners are: Saidul Islam, a member of the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh. Vince Wilburn was always fascinated by Tony Williams, Jack De Johnette, Al Foster, or whomever held the drum throne of his uncle Miles Davis’s group. At the tender age of 9, at the Plugg Nickel in old town Chicago, Miles had Vince sit in on a set with his band… Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Wayne Shorter, and Dave Holland. Vince founded and played in various Chicago bands through high school. Most notably, he was in a band called AL7, which caught Miles' attention. That band became the catalyst for “The Man with the Horn”, Miles' 1981 comeback album. The album was recorded in NY using AL7's core rhythm section. In 1983, Vince joined Cameo. In 1984, Vince went to Copenhagen to co-produce and record Miles' GRAMMY award-winning album “AURA” for Columbia Records. Vince played additional drums on the album. Later, Vince co-produced “Decoy”, which featured Al Foster on drums. In the summer of 1984, Vince began to live his dream. He co-produced and shared the drum chair with his idol, Al Foster, on Miles's record “You're Under Arrest”. Once the record was completed, Miles added Vince to his band, anointing him to the coveted drum throne. Vince toured the world with Miles while he held the drum chair from 1984 through 1987. In addition to heading his own company, NEFDRUM, Vince and his cousins, Cheryl and Erin, oversee Miles Davis Properties, LLC. In 2007 Vince called me to collaborate with him on “Evolution of a Groove”, a groundbreaking Miles Davis EP that features the likes of hip-hop icon Nas, guitar legend Carlos Santana, along with Victor Bailey, Pat Thrall, Olu Dara, and Charley Drayton. Vince was also Executive Producer of the Miles bio pic featuring Don Cheadle called “Miles Ahead”.

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Episode 18 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with saxophonist David Murray. David Murray arrived in New York in the mid-1970s as a student from Pomona College in California, and quickly started playing gigs in the lofts that were hosting most of the really forward-looking music at that time. He can be heard on the Wildflowers compilation, which documented a run of performances at Sam Rivers’ RivBea studio in 1976, and he made his debut album, Flowers For Albert, around the same time, with Olu Dara on trumpet, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Philip Wilson on drums. And since then, he’s made somewhere in the neighborhood of three hundred records, and probably more. What makes Murray important, though, is not just his productivity, but his unique voice – he combines old and new school styles in a really striking way, attacking with the whole horn, from the bottom to the top of its range and creating a sound that’s part Ben Webster, part Archie Shepp, and part Albert Ayler, but ultimately unlike anyone else out there. And he’s different from a lot of tenor players in that he doesn’t also play soprano. He plays tenor and bass clarinet, and that’s pretty much it. In this interview, I’m talking to him about a whole bunch of things. He’s got a new album called Blues For Memo, which we discuss a little bit, and we talk about his political views and how they manifest in his art, about why he’s made as many records as he has, about his creative relationship with Dave Burrell, who I interviewed in episode 15, we talk about his voice on the tenor saxophone, why he likes the octet format, and a lot of other subjects as well. I think it’s a really interesting interview, one I've wanted to do for a long time, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

La tercera entrega de HDO tiene por título “Those old and new blues”.
