On 17th September 1938, in Munich, one of the most extraordinary meetings in history took place. Neville Chamberlain launched an extraordinary and unprecedented diplomatic coup. Boarding a plane, he set off to meet Adolf Hitler in a desperate attempt to prevent war over Czechoslovakia, following the Nazis' territorial incursions into Czechoslovakia. Little did he know that Hitler was already planning to launch a full blown war on the first of October - just two weeks later. Chamberlain, in his own mind the man of the hour, boldly wrestling the fate of Europe back under control, left with the goodwill of the British public behind him. Arriving at the Berghoff, Hitler's fabled eerie, the two men talked and debated for three hours. Finally, Hitler agreed not to precipitate military action while Chamberlain discussed the situation with his Cabinet. Ominously, both men were delighted by the turn of events. Upon returning home, Chamberlain declared himself convinced of Hitler's reliability, despite knowing full well of the atrocities he had already committed. Finally, in September 1938, another totemic emergency meeting of the main European powers took place in Munich, and an agreement - the consequences of which would change the world - was reached. Chamberlain would return to Britain a hero, but given the war that would follow, should he instead have been cast as a traitor? Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the Munich Agreement: one of the most discussed, and infamous diplomatic instances in history, which has forever since shaped the way that Western nations have addressed international affairs. Had Neville Chamberlain delayed war with Germany, or inevitably doomed Czechoslovakia and Poland to the ruthless ravages of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party? _______ Twitter: @TheRestHistory @holland_tom @dcsandbrook Producer: Theo Young-Smith Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett Editor: Jack Meek Executive Producers: Jack Davenport + Tony Pastor Learn more about your ad choices. Ominously for President Biden, opinion polls consistently show voters are unhappy with his economic stewardship. The surge in inflation in 2022 didn't help, but after believing it to be transitory the Fed responded and it's now back down. Wednesday's 3.4% CPI figure isn't yet at the Fed's 2% target but is close enough that the […]

Prof Ben Garrod and Dr Jess French are looking past the beautifully coloured plumage, and delving deep inside to learn what this bird of prey really eats and what keeps its great wings aloft.
It is Sunday the 14th of April 1912, and the passengers of the Titanic, from the tycoons in first class to the migrants in third class, have been enjoying a journey incomparable in its modernity. The weather, up until that point exceptionally clement, suddenly grew colder, stiller, calmer, and the ice warnings that had been coming through the ship's sophisticated communications machine since Friday were growing evermore urgent. Ominously, they were left beneath piles of competing letters, unread. Then, at 11.40pm that night, a night of dancing and laughter, a cry came from the crow's nest: “Iceberg ahead!” Join Dominic and Tom as they unpack the captivating lives and stories of the Titanic's third class passengers, and recount the days and moments building up to the ship's final hours. *The Rest Is History LIVE in 2024* Tom and Dominic are back onstage this summer, at Hampton Court Palace in London! The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe unnamed narrator sits in his chamber on a dark and dreary December night, reading old books to try and distract himself from the passing of his love "Lenore." He has just started to drift off to sleep when he hears a knocking at the door. He is weary at first, not knowing if the noise was real or dreamed. He calls out to the "knocker" and apologises for is lateness, but when he finally swings open the door, he is greeted only by an empty hallway. He whispers out the word "Lenore" but the only reply is the echo of the name bouncing around the walls of the hallway. Ominously, the knocking noise continues, this time from the window. He goes to open the shutter, looking for his phantom visitor, but is only greeted by the night air. He opens the window, and strangely a raven hops over the threshold and flutters up to a bust of Pallas Athena above the chamber door. The Speaker is chuckled by this, and jokingly asks the bird for its name, but is frightened to kingdom come when the bird replies, "Nevermore."SUPPORT THE SHOWGet SurfShark and protect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389 Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers to stop selling your information with: Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389 *COMIC* By @Valenangelr https://www.instagram.com/valenangelr *SOCIAL*INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreads TWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

The Yellowstoners, Mike DeAngelo and Rodrigo Perez, have returned to break down another season of “Yellowstone” like Beth's bottle over some poor woman's head. Along the way, they'll also welcome guests from the show to discuss what makes the series so popular, their favorite characters and moments, and tease what's to come. For the uninitiated, the top-rated series follows John Dutton (Kevin Costner), a powerful rancher in Montana, as he struggles to keep his ranch and family together by any means necessary — all while being besieged by land developers, surrounding native tribes, and America's first national park. The highly popular Taylor Sheridan show stars Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, Gil Birmingham, and more. On this podcast episode, our hosts throw their ropes around episode three, entitled “Tall Drink of Water,” which premiered yesterday on Paramount Network. Afterward, Jamie Dutton himself, Wes Bentley, sits down to talk about what drew him to “Yellowstone” beyond just the great script. He went undefeated in 21 straight races for an incredible two-year winning streak. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for IRONMAN, USA Triathlon, and the International Triathlon Union. Allen has coached for 28 years and is now a coach on the TriDot platform. Best Questions and Answer from Thursday, July 28th from 8-9pm CT: Question: Why did you choose TriDot? Answer: Paving the way for how this industry is going to change. This is the future of triathlon training. It's reached a point where there's too much data for a coach to evaluate and adjust training fast enough. Been watching this trend for many years. "This is what I've been looking for and I didn't know it existed." Question: Besides nutrition, what is the diff between training for 70.3 and 140.6? Do you recommend 70.3 first? Answer: Experience is helpful to learn pacing and begin to understand nutrition. Misconception that the training is double. Fitness to do a 70.3 is 2/3 to 3/4s of what you need for an Ironman. Those long rides and runs get you the remaining training. You pace your race to give it everything you have for the distance. An Ironman feels a little bit longer than a 70.3. Question: What is the most important skill to master as an athlete? Coach? Answer: Pacing yourself. Follow the training, be consistent and make it a lifestyle. As a coach, respond to an athlete when they have a need. If it takes two weeks to get back to an athlete. I try to be very responsive. TriDot allows me to see what I do very efficiently. "Using this technology is a lot like using an MRI to diagnose an ailment vs a stethoscope." Question: Key to a fast marathon? Answer: Have pace yourself on the swim and the bike. Manage yourself, pace yourself and nutrition. Get extra fitness on the bike. Get out of the water fresh. Over distance in the swim and over distance on the bike. Marathon focus on preparing for what you can take in for nutrition. Do the brick workouts with the 20-40 minutes for running. Question: What is the mental strategy when you want to skip a workout? Advice to keep attacking it and getting better? Answer: It's important to identify the key workouts each week. It's more important to balance the sport with the rest of your life. You don't want to lose all the other things that are important to save 3 minutes on the bike. If you find those key workouts, they will give you 80-90% of what you need. The other workouts will help, but they only get you the remaining 10-20%. If getting all your workouts in causes stress in other parts of your life, that's not the goal. If you are feeling like not training, you need to ask yourself if you are recovered enough. Listen to your body. There's no device or metric that can replace how you feel. I like to get out the door and if after 10 minutes you feel like you're full of lactate or feeling lethargic, then turn around and go back home. Question: What are some of your mental strategies during tough spots in IRONMAN? Answer: How you deal with it starts long before the race. There will things that will come up that you couldn't have expected. You don't need a perfect race to race perfectly. If your goggles get kicked off, put them back on. You drop a water bottle. Shake it off and get an extra the next time. When you get to the whining phase, I have to change the channel. Get to a mental state where you take a big breath, stop the voice in my head, and analyze what's going on. Maybe I can walk a bit and be steady quiet and engaged. What ever my potential attention and energy I can bring, bring 100% of that. What's my purpose? Do I drop out? My body is working at 20% capacity. If I can give 100% of the 20%, I'll do that. You will be proud of the peace, purpose and quiet and strength to finish. Question: What is your inner dialogue when you are racing? Do you have a phrase or mantra? Answer: You should have the positive affirmation. Early in my career I tried that. When you do fall apart, I was never able to remember the mantras. I'm not light as a feather on the marathon, I feel like an elephant. The most powerful place to race from is a quiet mind. In a way you tune everything out but yourself and your process and engaged in the moment and not judging. Try to lock in and give everything I have. There's a magical switch point where all of a sudden you realize you are giving everything I have that day. Question: How do the principals in your book show up in your coaching? Answer: Fit Soul / Fit Body. Each of those elements got me from trying to win to winning IRONMAN. Quiet the mind Key. What is your Quest? Why does this have important for you? Is it part of the fulfillment of being a part of a community? Live what you asked for? What does it take to win the IRONMAN? Follow what TriDot is telling you to do. Go hard when you need and easy when you need. Taught me how to be fulfilled even when I have bad days of training and racing. Nothing is inherently good or bad, it's just how you react to it. Phil Liggett looks like Mark Allen is a matching. I was just steady and controlled. Question: Tips for older athletes and taking days off. Answer: I'm 64 and I don't take days off. You need to be tuned into your body and take a day off and recover and regenerate. You need to eat a little more good quality protein to stimulate the body to rebuild. Strength training is also key. It can be body weights and cords. If you just swim, bike and run. 20 year study on Boston Marathoners. 1 group just run. 2nd group that did strength and running kept all their muscle mass. Sleep and recovery. Protein and strength training. Question: What advice do you have for amateurs for longevity in the sport. Answer: Be consistent. Be steady with your training and recovery. You can only absorb so much stress. If you overdo it you will become stressed and overtrained. This sport should bring fulfillment and happiness. Question: If I go into my anaerobic zone during my aerobic, will I burn carbohydrate the rest of the workout. Answer: Depends on how long and how fit. When you aerobic, your ancient genetics detects danger and the adrenal system starts and turns off fat burning and continues to burn carbohydrate. It's a survival adaptation. You go into high stress physiology. It's not a faucet you turn on and off. It's more like a river that continues to flow for several hours. That's why people bonk. Question: What's the best marker for choosing to go pro? Answer: What do you think your potential is? If you feel like your just getting going, go for it. If you're just barely there and you think your at your potential. Question: What hydration / nutrition to avoid cramps? Answer: Different cramps have different reasons. Early in the swim your feet cramp - typically when you are under high stress. Your body excretes sodium and magnesium when under stress and your adrenal system kicks in. Okay to have a little anxiety. As best as you can load up on sodium and magnesium. You need to keep on top of magnesium all year. If late in the race the quads cramp, it's because you are putting more load on the quads during the race. Do strength work so you have extra muscle to utilize. Calf cramps come from being under stress for a long time. When your adrenal system gets depleted you get calf cramps. Side stitches come from fast shallow breathing. Slow down the breathing and take deeper breathing. Otherwise rub your knuckles on the sternum. Question: What gets you most jazzed about the future of the sport? Answer: Seeing this whole new generation of pros and redefining what is possible. We've had several generations. You can tell some of these great athletes like Daniel and Alistair are on the way out. The way these new athletes like Kristian Blummenfelt and the Sam Longs and Laura Phillips are a new generation that want to race the top folks. Not like it used to be were the new pros were scared cats. Our News is sponsored by Buddy Insurance. Buddy Insurance gives you peace of mind to enjoy your training and racing to the fullest. Endurance News: PTO Canadian Open 2022 results: Ashleigh Gentle runs to glory Australia's Ashleigh Gentle claimed a superb victory in the inaugural PTO Canadian Open in Edmonton on Saturday. When Gentle exited the three-lap swim just 24 seconds back on Vittoria Lopes, one of the best triathlon swimmers in the world, it was perhaps a sign of things to come. It was a dream start and it set up a memorable day for Ashleigh. A well-paced bike ride followed, and the addition of a killer run resulted in $100k first prize courtesy of a comprehensive victory in the debut event of the 2022 PTO Tour. With a wedding coming up, it was quite timely! Gentle delivered in some style. Swim – Lopes leads the way Brazilian short-course specialist and middle distance debutant Lopes, said goodbye to the rest of the field inside the first few minutes of the three-lap, 2km swim at Hawrelak Park. With the field including Lauren Brandon (USA) and Sara Perez Sala (ESP), among the top-ranked swimmers from the PTO's number-crunching, that was an impressive start. Given that she exited the swim at Tokyo 2020 on the feet of Jess Learmonth in a very select group at the Olympic Games, perhaps not surprising – but still very impressive. Brandon and Perez Sala were in the small chase group along with Julie Derron (SUI) and Gentle. That represented a fantastic start for the Australian, who had been a minute down on Perez Sala in the opening discipline (over a shorter distance), at CLASH Miami. If she could maintain that to the swim exit in Edmonton, a great start to her day. Lopes did lead into T1, but Brandon was only 12 seconds back after a strong third loop, with Derron, Perez Sala and Gentle a further 10 seconds down. Unfortunately for Lopes, going the wrong side of one of the swim buoys would cost her a 30-second penalty later in the race. Among the pre-race favourites chasing were Holly Lawrence (GBR), Paula Findlay (CAN), Ellie Salthouse (AUS) and Nicola Spirig (SUI) – all around 1:10 down, but not the best start for Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) or Laura Philipp (GER) in relative terms. The Brit was 3:35 down, with Laura a few seconds further back. The German had four athletes behind her, and 27 ahead… time to go to work. Bike – fast Findlay takes control The bike course in Edmonton comprised of four laps of 20km. As the race started to take shape going into lap two, Lopes – on her standard WTCS road bike – was still holding strong at the front but home favourite Findlay was now only 10 seconds back in second place, having made up 1:15 on the bike. Gentle, Salthouse, Spirig (road bike, of course!) and Derron followed, just over 30 seconds down. India Lee was seemingly having a great day (9th at this stage, +1:46) and riding just in front of Lawrence. Philipp had moved up to 16th (+2:57) and was riding quicker then everyone except Findlay. Pallant-Browne's day looked as though it was all but over however. From riding with Philipp, she dropped from the timings suddenly, with news subsequently confirmed that she had suffered a front wheel flat. Very frustrating, and with $1million on the line and the last chance to display Collins Cup form, potentially very costly too. The end of lap two represented the halfway mark of the ride, by which point Findlay's charge had seen her take the lead and continue to set the fastest splits on two wheels. Findlay crossed the 40km time split with an advantage of just over a minute on a quartet of Gentle, Salthouse, Spirig and Lopes. Jocelyn McCauley was sixth, 2:08 back. Philipp was now in seventh, 2:40 back and continuing to gain ground. Another lap on and the Findlay lead had grown to 1:34, with the chasing quartet of Gentle, Salthouse, Spirig and Lopes together. McCauley was still having a great race, 2:16 back in sixth, with Philipp holding pace to Findlay, but still 2:42 back in seventh. She would be hoping to reduce that a touch ahead of the upcoming 18km run. Completing the top 10 at the 60km mark on the bike were Skye Moench (USA), Jacqui Hering (USA) and Lawrence (GBR), four minutes behind the hometown leader. McCauley's progress continued through the final lap, which saw Findlay start the 18km run with a significant lead. Following on the four-lap course were Gentle (+2:04), Salthouse (+2:14), McCauley (+2:19), Philipp (+2:32) and Spirig (+2:42). After taking that penalty incurred in the swim, Lopes started the run in seventh (+3:32). Run – Gentle takes control Gentle looked brilliant from the start of the run and immediately started gaining on the 2020 PTO Champion Findlay, reducing a 2:04 deficit to 1:35 within the first 2.5km. Philipp had moved into third and was also gaining on Paula – but most significantly she was losing time to Gentle, the 2018 ITU Grand Final winner. At the end of lap one of four, Findlay's lead was down to just one minute over a flowing Gentle, but Philipp's charge from 28th exiting the water was perhaps coming to a stall. Still in third, she remained 2:30 back and was matching, but not catching, the pace of Paula. Unless anything changed, this was all pointing towards an Australian winner. The inevitable pass came around the 7.5km mark, and by the midpoint of the run (9km), she was already 23 seconds up, with Philipp now three minutes back in third. Making rapid progress and now up to fourth was Chelsea Sodaro, who had finished a distant second to Philipp at IRONMAN Hamburg. The tables looked set to be turned here, unless the German could raise her pace over the closing kilometres. Ashleigh Gentle PTO Canadian Open 2022 finish Photo by Darren Wheeler (www.thatcameraman.com) While she didn't get the win, a very happy Findlay held strong for second place and a $70k pay cheque. The battle to complete the podium went to the final few hundred metres, when Sodaro hit the afterburners and left Philipp unable to respond. Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) PTO Canadian Open 2022 results: Gustav Iden tops Blummenfelt There was plenty of action on the run at the first ever PTO Canadian Open on Sunday, but when the dust settled, it was Team Norway topping the podium once again. Gustav Iden took the spoils of victory (including a $100k cheque for first prize) as he came home in front of compatriot Kristian Blummenfelt. That though tells just a tiny part of the story on what was an incident-packed day in North America. Swim – Schoeman sets the pace When we previewed the Pro Men's race in Edmonton, one of the factors we mentioned was the quality of swimmers in the field and the likelihood that the pace would be on from the start. That, not surprisingly, proved to be the case and we saw an elite group of six break clear, headed out of the water by Henri Schoeman (RSA). Separated by just 17 seconds, Schoeman was joined by Aaron Royle (AUS), Alistair Brownlee (GBR), Sam Laidlow (FRA), Ben Kanute (USA) and Kyle Smith (NZL). Plenty of biking legs there too. The chasers were led by Olympic, World Triathlon and IRONMAN World Champion, Blummenfelt (NOR), who was 1:16 back on the pace-setting Commonwealth Games gold medallist. The Blummenfelt ‘group' was significant, and included the likes of Miki Taagholt (DEN), Frederic Funk (GER) and Iden (NOR). All told there were 23 athletes within two minutes of the leader after the opening three-lap, 2km swim in Hawrelak Park, but as expected, Lionel Sanders (CAN) was not one of them. ‘No Limits' was 34th of 37 in the water, 3:48 down. The slowest T1 of the entire race, by some margin, was hardly helping his cause, and he would start the bike in 35th. Bike – Brownlee and Laidlow break clear 20km down – the end of lap one of four – and Laidlow and Brownlee had gained a small advantage, 21 seconds up on Smith and Royle. They in turn were now 10 seconds clear of Kanute and Schoeman. The Blummenfelt/Iden/Taagholt/Funk and co. chase group started lap two 1:44 back. Sanders had Sebastian Kienle (GER) for company, but will still four minutes behind Brownlee and Laidlow at the front, but now up to 26th. Brownlee and Laidlow continued to work well at the front, swapping the lead and both clearly fully focussed on optimising the bike section. 40km in and they were now 47 seconds up on Smith who was now riding solo. Royle, Schoeman and Kanute had now been swept up by the Norwegian express, who has slightly reduced their deficit to 1:32. The pressure was on though, and that group was now down to just seven. Sanders was losing nothing – but while now up to 20th and still more than four minutes back, he was gaining nothing in time terms either. The second half of the ride didn't see too much change in terms of the shape of the race. A few seconds here and there, but when the T2 dismount line arrived, it was still Brownlee and Laidlow leading the way. Alistair's dismount however was pretty poor – clearly crossing the line. The chase group was 1:07 back comprising of Iden, Funk, Blummenfelt, Smith, Royle, Taagholt, Pieter Heemeryck (BEL) covering 3rd-9th in close order. Sanders completed the top-10 (alongside Andrew Starykowicz) at this point and has gained back some time. He was 3:19 back as he headed towards his bike rack. Run – Gustav holds on as Kristian battles back A late entry to the event, Brownlee had said pre-race that the run was where he was likely to struggle, courtesy of a lack of enough running miles, and he certainly didn't look too good over the opening mile as Laidlow took the lead. Ominously, Iden and Blummenfelt were now practically stride-for-stride and less than a minute back. They also looked, well, like they usually do – brilliant. Clearly in pain, Alistair was soon struggling big time, dropping back through the field and seemingly in danger of a DNF. In Brownlee terms, he was in hobble mode and it was painful to watch, from an athlete who has been one of the greatest we've ever seen. Laidlow started the second lap of four with a 16 second lead, but his chances of maintaining that spot for another 4.5km were basically zero, with the way that Iden and Blummenfelt were flying… and then suddenly Blummenfelt came to an abrupt halt with an apparent hip flexor / quad injury / cramp. Brownlee broken, Blummenfelt hobbling and just as Iden moved into the lead, Laidlow pretty much came to a stop too with cramps. Carnage all over the course – and all within about 10 minutes. Unexpected excitement and lots of things to be considered for each athlete, considering future season plans and avoiding long-term damage. With his biggest potential challengers falling away, Iden was now in prime position. At the midway point of the run, his lead was a minute and a half over Blummenfelt, who had seemingly had his own Terminator moment, regenerated, and was looking (very) good again. Remarkable – but given his last 18 months, why expect anything different? Aaron Royle was continuing to have a great day, holding third place (+1:48), followed by Laidlow, Heemeryck, Funk and Taagholt. Sanders (+3:44), Smith (+3:45) and Collin Chartier (+4:55) rounded out the top ten with 9km of running remaining. With one 4.5km lap remaining, Gustav continued to lead – but Big Blu was not giving up, bouncing back, gaining time and just 56 seconds in arrears. Surely even he couldn't take this victory? At the final turnaround – 2.25km to go – Blummenfelt had cut that 56 seconds to 43 seconds. Exciting racing certainly, but the odds were definitely in favour of the reigning and two-time IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion. So it proved, and despite the best efforts of his training partner, the legend of the lucky hat remained intact as Gustav Iden took victory at the PTO Canadian Open by just 27 seconds. Royle capped a fantastic all round performance to complete the podium, ahead of an impressive Laidlow who, like Blummenfelt, bounced back from his mid-race issues for a superb fourth position. Not the day he wanted, but if you'd told me at 3km that Brownlee would even finish the race, I'd have said you are mad. Kudos to the twice Olympic champion for showing his grit to complete the race. A version of this essay has been published at https://swarajyamag.com/world/the-rules-based-liberal-world-order-or-whatever-is-coming-apart-at-the-seamsI don’t know about you, but I have long been a fan of the ‘liberal rules-based international order’, although to be quite honest, I have had only a rather vague idea what it meant. It sounded pretty good, though. I mean, how could any reasonable person be against ‘liberal’, ‘order’, and ‘rules-based’? It is only lately that I have learned this is strictly a marketing moniker. It’s a bit like the Moral Majority, which has a nice ring to it, and made waves as a bunch of fiery literalist Bible-thumpers some years ago. It turned out, alas, that they were neither particularly ‘moral’ and certainly not a ‘majority’. If I recall correctly some of its brightest stars were found in flagrante delicto, including one fire-and-brimstone preacher who was caught twice in cars with street prostitutes.Just like the ‘Holy Roman Empire’ was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.Similarly, the ‘liberal rules-based international order’ is neither liberal, nor rules-based, nor an order. It is essentially a post-World-War-II mechanism to perpetuate the rule of the victors in that conflict, giving them a free pass in world affairs for as long as possible. In particular, it was an arrangement that assumed that the US would remain the paramount global power for the foreseeable future. That ‘order’ almost immediately fell apart because the Soviets and the Americans started a rivalry for spheres of influence, including the Soviet evangelization of communism. The Americans embraced the Domino Theory and began counter-evangelization of democracy as the antidote to all the evils of society. This ended up in the Cold War, although to be fair, the US did help a number of its allies to prosper. They were mostly white European countries, but also East Asians. Through the power of suggestion (hurrah, New York Times and Hollywood) we have been led to believe that the world is moving steadily towards the triumph of ‘democracy’, which turns out to be a euphemism for a world where Western European/American dominance is written into law.Note how this means the United Nations Security Council has France and Britain, who really don’t deserve to be there; but not Germany and Japan, who do, along with Brazil, South Africa and India. Similarly there is a (written or unwritten?) rule that the World Bank’s President has to be an American. This was followed scrupulously until a South Korean (presumably a friend of America) was given the job in 2012. It is now back to an American.Along the same lines, the IMF’s Managing Director has always been a Western European, with the current incumbent being a Bulgarian former World Bank acting President, with a bit of a chequered past: she was found to have inflated Chinese data to make it look better during her term at the World Bank.Similar stories, I suspect, can be told about all the other major multinational organizations, for instance the WHO which the Chinese have turned into their fiefdom. The Russians, who probably did more to defeat the Germans in WW2 than anybody else, have been denied much of a role. Thank you for reading Shadow Warrior. This post is public so feel free to share it.That old caste system has a ‘First World’ consisting of the US and Western Europe, a ‘Second World’ consisting of the Soviet Union/Russia and Eastern Europe, and a ‘Third World’ consisting of everybody else. There have been some minor changes, such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the UAE becoming honorary (but not full-fledged) members of the First World. The other side of the picture is a certain feudalism that this caste system perpetrated, and that has persisted throughout the last 75 years. Feudal First Worlders dominate the serfs of the Third World. Today, First Worlders decry the neo-feudalism of the techno-billionaires, without irony and without recognizing that they continue to apply it to the Third World, most notably India, which has been kept out of the NPT, MTCR, and so forth. And have you noticed that the very term ‘Third World’ has fallen out of favor, to be replaced by the anodyne but meaningless ‘Global South’? This is because the creators of narratives didn’t want to attract unwarranted attention to their straightforward caste system. In this context, let us recall that ‘caste’ itself is a European construct, derived from the Spanish ‘casta’, and applied most intensely to mixed-race people in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies, classifying them based on skin color and thus race. They obfuscate this by conflating it with the Hindu jati system. That is blood libel along the lines of them deeming the Christian Hakencreuz to be the Dharmic Svastika. Thanks for reading Shadow Warrior! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.Of course, the other side of the picture is that the Chinese have crashed this party, and have pretty much jumped into the First World from the Third World. And they are mounting an intense challenge to the so-called ‘rules-based order’, partly by buying up opinion makers, and quite possibly by interfering in US elections in discreet ways: see recent revelations about the theft of US consumer data by Tiktok. This ‘order’ is clearly being challenged by China; but the Ukraine war is also showing how tattered it is, especially as the ‘First World’ struggles to contain nasty inflation and to delink its supply chains from China’s vice-like grip. Ominously, there is increasing political turmoil all over the ‘First World’.In the US, Biden and company are flailing about trying to find a theme that would cover up consumer anger over food and fuel price inflation, shortages (eg baby food and tampons), and rising law and order problems. Paul Krugman even tried to explain that inflation is an (optical) illusion. They have tried, successively, abortion rights, gun control, and now they are falling back on the tried and tested January 6th outrage. None of this is raising Biden’s abysmal ratings going into November’s midterm elections. In Britain, Boris Johnson just barely survived a no-confidence motion; the polls forecasting by-election results are not encouraging to the ruling Tories; inflation is a burning issue, and should reach a crescendo in the winter months with sharp rises in fuel costs. And they have a bruising rail strike as well. In Australia, Scott Morrison was suddenly replaced by Anthony Albanese. To add insult to injury, they have decided to dump the British Queen as Head of State. In Canada, Justin Trudeau’s image took a beating when he showed a dictatorial streak and walked all over the Freedom of Expression of truckers who were mostly protesting over extra-strict covid regulations. In New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern came down from the delirious heights of being the Woke Queen when she was forced to abandon her imperious zero-covid policy; and now she’s boycotting the British Commonwealth, preferring instead to attend a NATO meeting as a guest. The Pacific states are also concerned about China’s security pact with the Solomon Islands. So much for the Five Eyes, the US’s closest allies. Things are not so hot with the second tier of allies, either. In France, Emmanuel Macron was re-elected as President, but voters have punished his party in elections, sharply curtailing his room for maneuver. In Israel, Naftali Bennett’s government has just fallen, and they will go for yet another general election, the 4th in 5 years. Binyamin Netanyahu may yet come back.In the EU in general, and Germany in particular, there is great uneasiness about the US fiat about cutting off Russian energy imports. The EU has bought the vast majority of Russian exports, while the US bullies mostly innocent bystander India which is a minor sinner. And of course Biden is reluctant to chide China over its purchases. All this leads me to believe that the already-moribund so-called ‘liberal rules-based international order’, a thinly-veiled vehicle for US-Western European neo-feudalism, is on its last legs. Francis Fukuyama spoke memorably of the ‘end of history’; in fact it is the ‘end of Atlanticism’ that we are seeing. The future, and indeed the present, is the Indo-Pacific century. India is right to not throw in its lot with the declining West, or the rampaging but shaky China. There is good reason to aspire to be a third pole in a multi-polar world. The end of European and American exceptionalism. The beginning of Indian exceptionalism. No more neo-feudalism, tech or otherwise. 1350 words, June 22, 2022 This is a public episode. “Have you eaten lately?” is a Chinese greeting rooted in centuries of famine, particularly under the Communist Party's misrule. It may soon become something Americans ask one another, too. After all, world food shortages are on the rise, aggravated by serious disruptions of both Russian and Ukrainian wheat exports induced by Putin's invasion. Shortfalls in imports of the ingredients needed to fertilize America's farmland are examples of the folly of relying on foreign supply chains. China has been hoarding, accumulating huge wheat and corn stockpiles. It has also been buying up large quantities of U.S. farmland and food processing plants here. Ominously, there have lately been a spate of as-yet-unexplained fires and other “accidents” reported at 12 of such plants. One thing seems certain already: All these problems can add up to acute food insecurity for millions of us. This is Frank Gaffney. Ominously, Matthew's gospel points out at one point, “[Jesus] did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:58). How do we avoid limited God's access to our lives this way? "No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem." -Booker T. Washington How do people KNOW the election was stolen or KNOW it wasn't... before the investigations are complete, let alone challenged in a court? I'm not sure people know what it is to know, judging by the sheer quantity of "certainty" on Twitter. A man wrote, for the London School of Economics, a book review in which he dismissed an author as a "rich white man." While the author's net worth is anybody's guess -- the man is Thomas Sowell, a famous black economist. This is more than just a mistake: This reveals that many on the left -- even leading lights who might write for the LSE -- cannot make race-blind arguments. What used to be known more broadly as "arguments." "The gods mercifully gave mankind this little moment of peace between the religious fanaticisms of the past and the fanaticisms of class and race that were speedily to arise and dominate time to come." -G. M. Trevelyan

This week, Square Invests $50 million into Bitcoin, Coinbase is losing employees because they don't want to get political, and the extended tax deadline is less than a week away! More @ Talk.Bitcoin.Tax Full Show Notes: (00:28) On Wednesday this week, Square Inc purchased 50 million dollars worth of Bitcoin, or around 4709 BTC. For those unfamiliar, Square is the company started by Jack Dorsey, who is also the CEO of Twitter. Square is responsible for a number of financial products and services, including Cash App. Dorsey is a vocal advocate of cryptocurrency, which Wednesday's gigantic purchase of Bitcoin is certainly illustrative of. On Twitter, Dorsey said “More important than Square investing $50mm in Bitcoin is sharing how we did it (so others can do the same)… And FAR more important than that is us investing directly in open source development, opening access to patents with COPA, and making bitcoin more accessible and useful to millions of people with Cash App.” Square INC released a whitepaper to provide details about HOW and WHY they purchased the $50 million in Bitcoin: “Treasury purchased the bitcoin over-the-counter with a bitcoin liquidity provider that we currently use as part of Cash App's bitcoin trading product” The whitepaper states that the Bitcoin is held in their proprietary cold storage aptly named “SubZero”, which is also used to protect the Bitcoin of CashApp users, and protected by “a Crime insurance policy to protect against internal or external theft of bitcoin both in hot wallet and cold storage.” As for why the company decided to invest in Bitcoin: “We view bitcoin as an instrument of global economic empowerment; it is a way for individuals around the world to participate in a global monetary system and secure their own financial future.” Opinions of this investment are generally pretty positive – most people in the crypto space concede this is a good move for the future of crypto. More and more companies are investing in crypto in a big way – see the Microstrategy investments in August, for example. Of course, there are those outside the space that can spin even news like this into something negative. Some critics asked why news of such an investment, or the investment itself, hasn't pushed the price of BTC up much higher. However, as of recording, Bitcoin has indeed broken $11,000 and seems to be holding. (02:30) It's fairly difficult to not mix politics and cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency itself has political and philosophical attributes built it – namely, decentralization. This week saw Coinbase taking a hit for attempting to stay apolitical during one of the most politically charged years in modern times. For some backstory, near the end of September of this year, the CEO of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, released a blog post essentially stating that Coinbase doesn't want it's employees getting political because it can cause trouble to their team dynamic. The blog post is linked in our summary at talk.bitcoin.tax, but here are a couple sentences from the article, summarizing Armstrong's stance: Referring to societal issues and social activism, Armonstrong stated that “We don't engage here when issues are unrelated to our core mission, because we believe impact only comes with focus…they have the potential to destroy a lot of value at most companies, both by being a distraction, and by creating internal division.” In the post, Armstrong concedes that this may not be a popular stance, and he understands that many could disagree with him. It's certainly a bold stance, and one that does seem in opposition to the stance many companies have taken in 2020. Clearly, a good chunk of his employees were not on board with this approach – in a follow up blog post released yesterday, Armstrong said that about 5% of Coinbase employees have left the company as a result of the apolitical stance, and a number of other employees are in talk to depart as well. Interestingly, Armstrong highlights that underrepresented populations employed at Coinbase do not represent the bulk of employees leaving the company, and that Coinbase will “continue to keep a close eye on this to ensure we are building a diverse, inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong”. Despite losing a decent amount of employees, including the VP of business and data Dan Yoo, Brian Armstrong seems to be doubling down on his position: “While having team members leave is never easy, I think we will emerge as a more aligned company from this. From time to time we need to rearticulate and clarify our cultural norms as we continue scaling. I'm excited to be moving forward as #OneCoinbase to pursue our vision of economic freedom for every person and business.” Coinbase is certainly a giant in terms of exchanges, but they do receive a decent amount of criticism from those in the crypto community who prefer to hold their own cryptocurrency. It's doubtful that this added controversy will lead to their ultimate decline, but it's certainly a bold move in today's climate. Is it the right move? Of course, that depends on who you ask, and the context of that question – is it a good move in terms of morals, ethics, or even optics? Is it a good move for the bottom line of the company? Keeping in line with Brian Armstrong's apolitical vision, I'll withhold judgement either way! (05:11) Finally – a quick reminder…the extended tax deadline is rapidly approaching! Saturday, May 3rd, 1980. Miami County, Kansas. Mark and Barry, ages 17 and 14, decide to go fishing near Bull Creek in Miami County, Kansas, maybe an hour’s drive south of Kansas City. The area is deserted countryside—soon to be underwater when a Marais des Cygnes Reservoir Project is completed. After they tire of fishing, they go off to explore the nearby woods and fields. When Barry sees a fresh mound of dirt near the creek, the two teens walk over to look more closely. Ominously, the mound is 10 inches high, 6 feet long, and 4 feet wide. When they spot a piece of denim and a red shirt sticking out from the dirt, they poke gingerly at the cloth. They recoil at terrible smell and cry out “It’s a body.” Poking some more, they see what looks like it might be a knee. That’s finally enough for our young adventurers. Barry yells “We better go tell my mom” as they race away from the scene. I posted the links to the sources used for this episode below. Saturday, May 3rd, 1980. Miami County, Kansas. Mark and Barry, ages 17 and 14, decide to go fishing near Bull Creek in Miami County, Kansas, maybe an hour’s drive south of Kansas City. Joe Biden announced his candidacy for president last week. You might imagine that in the age of Bernie Sanders and Liz Warren, with some of the leading Democrats talking up free college tuition, the abolition of student debt, Medicare For All raising the minimum wage and taxing wealthy individuals and moonwalking even a little away from support of apartheid Israel that another frankly pro-corporate candidate would enter the race somewhere near the bottom of the polls. That would be right. You’d be imagining that. In the real world, Joe Biden announced last week and the first three polls list him at the top of the field, leading Bernie Sanders by double digits, with everybody else in single digits. Ominously, in all three polls about half the voters favoring Biden are black voters. The obvious conclusion, supported by the fact that Biden’s first two campaign videos, are race themed, and the second one prominently includes Barack Obama, is that Biden’s popularity among black voters is a hangover from the blind and unconditional support those same voters gave to the Obama administration. In the case of Barack Obama the fumes were so strong that his actual record didn’t matter. Barack could bail out and immunize the banksters and the companies that manufactured fake paperwork to take hundreds of thousands of homes away from people, and support from his base did not waver. Barack could propose commissions to privatize social security, and rescue the insurance companies instead of delivering Medicare For All and his based still lined up behind him. Barack Obama’s “Race to the Top” program put more than 150,000 experienced black teachers out of work and closed thousands of public schools to make way for the privatization of education across the country, and black voters, including most of those former teachers, would have voted for him again. Biden was Obama’s vice president. But Biden is not Obama. Even if Obama openly endorses him at some point, Biden has his own record, and it’s that of a consistent corporate stooge. particularly of the real estate and banking industries, and as one of the architects of the mass incarceration state. Joe Biden didn’t just cast a vote for the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, also known as the Clinton Crime bill. Joe Biden wrote the bill, including but not limited to provisions that created no less than 60 new federal death penalty offenses a ban on Pell grants for prisoners, from which states took their cues and enacted similar bans on higher education for prisoners. $9 billion in new funding for prisons sex offender registries to ensure lifelong stigmatization of the convicted 3 strikes provisions new funding for “boot camps” and juvenile prisons funding for 100,000 new police officers Biden’s bill resulted in a spike in mass incarceration which of course affected African American and Latinx communities more profoundly than any others. The damage to families and lives of course continues today. For many years, Joe Biden was known as the Senator from MBNA, the giant credit card entity that was bought by Bank of American in 2006 and re-sold to Lloyd’s Bank UK in 2016. Biden was responsible for the provisions that made it impossible to discharge student debt via bankruptcy, thus shackling millions of people with ballooning student debt that lasts till their forties and fifties. Student debt of course weighs heaviest upon black women. Joe Biden is an unwavering supporter of apartheid Israel, just like his buddy Barack, and an unrepentant warmonger like just about all of his Democrat colleagues in the House, the Senate, and among presidential candidates. Until Biden’s entrance, Bernie Sanders was the clear Democratic front runner. That’s over. The polls haven’t broken Biden’s black support by age, but it’s safe to assume that Bernie still leads among younger black voters, while Biden’s voters tend to be older. After promising for two years and failing to deliver Trump and his crew in handcuffs over imaginary collusion with the Russians, it’s hard to see how any Democrat wins in 2020. Even Bernie Sanders did his best to spread the RussiaGate nonsense. And while Bernie is likely the best candidate against Trump (my opinion – not the pollsters) the big lmoney guys from the telecoms, the military contractors, the real estate and banking and Big Pharma will surely line up behind their dependable Uncle Joe. They would rather lose with Biden than win with Bernie. The key to popping the Biden Balloon is getting past the warm and fuzzy Obama hangover, and drilling down into Biden’s actual record as a corporate stooge, a warmonger, an architect of the prison state, a foe of Medicare For All and a servant of the predatory banking industry which has saddled a generation with unpayable student debt. Most of the Democratic hopefuls though cannot do this, because they too are on the same corporate tit as Joe Biden, which is a telling indictment of the Democratic party, and why I and others are trying to build another party outside of and independent of the corporate-run Republicans and Democrats. Reservoir Dogs minute 74 starts with Freddy finishing up washing his hands and ends with Freddy speaking highly of Joe to Holdaway. A Too Old Media podcast
The 1ST and only ufo case in the united states OFFICIALLY Inducted as "historically significant and true." It's the early 1960s in a small town by the name of Sheffield Massachusetts. It is fall and the shadows are long. Inside the family farm house two brothers Thom Reed, age 6 and his younger brother Mathew, are safe and asleep in their bedroom. Suddenly the house is illuminated and hit with what has been described as "a barrage of bright burst of light". Mathew, watches his brother Thom, now engulfed in light, evaporates in front of him. Mathew bolts for the door and down the hall for his mother Nancy. He finds his mother in somewhat of a catatonic state but revives her enough to relay the horror of what has just taken place. Nancy makes her way towards the boys bedroom, when suddenly with a snap of a deafening bang, Mathew also disappears. Nancy, now frantic, races from field to field on their 80 acre land. They boys are found, but 15 feet from each other starring blankly at each other, shaken to their core. Ominously this would not be the last of such unexplained experiences the family would have to suffer. Our guest tonight is the grown Thon Reed form the story I have just told you. Tonight we are going head first into the case.
