The day had come on March 22nd, 2025... the day we crowned the greatest dish in Chinese Cuisine for 2025! It was a hotly contested battle, voted on by about 60 members of our audience on a beautiful night in Chinatown. Cohosted by myself and the folks from The Worst Quality Crab Podcast and the On Waverly Bookstore, it was truly a fun night! I hope you were able to join us live, but if you weren't, here's our recording. Mark your calendars for next year, we'd love to do another round with lots of your favorites that didn't make this year's list! So many people to thank: Jon for helping me come up with the idea, and Freesia and Sam Lee for adding fuel to the fire and bringing their audience along! To Cynthia and Jenn for providing a beautiful, inviting place to have it. My friend Steve for running the Zoom, as well as all the staff at On Waverly for keeping things in order and providing prizes and snacks. And, of course, to everyone who was able to make it down, we couldn't have had this without your votes! What happens when a liberal thinker shifts his attention from polarization to economic abundance? Ezra Klein's new book with Derek Thompson, Abundance, argues for an agenda of increased housing, infrastructure, clean energy, and innovation. But does abundance clash with polarization—or offer a way through it? In this conversation, Ezra and Tyler discuss how the abundance agenda interacts with political polarization, whether it's is an elite-driven movement, where Ezra favors NIMBYism, the geographic distribution of US cities, an abundance-driven approach to health care, what to do about fertility decline, how the U.S. federal government might prepare for AGI, whether mass layoffs in government are justified, Ezra's recommended travel destinations, and more. Astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are back on Earth after spending nine months on the International Space Station, a big change from their initial mission that was only supposed to last eight days. Their replacement crew arrived last week, and they landed back on our planet on Tuesday following a 17-hour ride. Although they are home safe and sound, Williams and Wilmore have a long rehabilitation process ahead. Retired NASA astronaut Clayton "AstroClay" Anderson joins the Rundown to describe the return process for spacemen and what the road ahead looks like. President Trump has invoked the Alien and Sedition Acts, an 18th-century wartime law, to deport illegal immigrants believed to be part of Tren de Aragua, a dangerous Venezuelan prison gang. The law gives the President the authority to deport foreign nationals during wartime, and the deportation of several Venezuelans is already facing legal challenges from federal courts. Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General and UC Berkeley law professor John Yoo joins the podcast to explain the argument that the Trump administration will make in court for their use of this wartime act to deport violent criminals. Plus, commentary from FOX News contributor and host of the Jason In The House podcast, Jason Chaffetz. Photo Credit; NASA Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This Christmas, I thought it would be fun to analyze 6 popular Christmas songs referencing animals-other-than-humans (mostly mammals who are forced to pull people around the snow in sleds, and then some birds, mainly birds that humans kill and eat but sometimes birds humans admire for their beauty). The songs are Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Run Run Rudolph, Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song. I'm going to deconstruct these Christmas songs from a Critical Animal Studies perspective. In other words, as an animal rights activist who is sympathetic to the more-than-human-world and the perspectives and interests of other animal individuals and our shared habitats, I analyze these classic songs and what lessons they teach us about fellow animal species and how we could be more respectful, kind of like those Politically Correct Bedtime Story series that gives you a critical yet humorous perspective on classic tales in Western society. My Radio Free Georgia version of this episode has the license to broadcast these popular songs, but for my podcast friends, I don't have copyright permission to play the songs, so I linked to the youtube versions of the songs in the podcast notes here below. For the recording, I'll put a jingle bell sound in there when you can cue up the songs to play yourself if you want to. But I'll speak the key lyrics dealing with animals that I discuss. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 43! Today's guest is Jaylee Hamidi who is best known for their acting, but is also both a writer and painter. Jaylee was born in Shanghai, China, but moved to Canada and now lives in Vancouver. They are a queer, gender-fluid, Chinese-Kurdish-Iranian creative professional. They currently can be seen in their breakout recurring role as Allie in the Hulu, ABC Onyx show “How to Die Alone”, created and lead by actress Natasha. We love how Jaylee plays the character of Allie with candor and wisdom. In scenes with the main character Mel, they bond over the fact that they're on similar life paths of falling in love with their whole selves and not settling for anything or anyone less. In this episode's conversation, we talk about representation, Jaylee's writing, their paintings, building chemistry in acting, their hopes for future storylines on Allie, and so much more. Enjoy the conversation! Quick note: Due to some technical difficulties during the recording of the conversation, the audio cut out on a few of Jaylee's responses. Okay… you've done thing. Now to promote it. We have to let people know, right? Instagram: do a reel, a still, a carousel, onto Pinterest, email, Facebook, a quick Instagram live, and then onto stories. Oh and maybe YouTube. Phew. All done. Don't make me tell people again… but algorithms. What if no one sees any of it? Hmmmm… Did the email go to ‘junk'? So, we all get onto social media again and post the thing. Again. Then again. Maybe once more. Cringe. Do we post again? Cringe. Maybe another email. *breaks out in hives* What if people get sick of me, unsubscribe and everyone hates me? The cringe! This week we're are joined in studio by Dr. Blake Grisham of Texas Tech and Courtenay Conring, a hardworking young biologist. These two and others have been working a long term research project on Sandhill Cranes. It's a very interesting discussion and we learned so much. Most people don't understand the various populations of cranes, their migration, pair bonding, parenting skills and how long lived they are. We did know that they are referred to as “ribeye in the sky” and it was confirmed they are in fact delicious. We also learned just how much fun they are to hunt and we were surprised to learn just how wary they are. Sandhill Cranes have a beautiful throaty call and once you have heard one it's easy to recognize. We are proud to know these researchers are helping other state agencies understand these wild birds to better manage them. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. Early Sunday morning, Israeli fighter jets took out over 1,000 Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon aimed at the Jewish State. Sources say Hezbollah was on the verge of launching an imminent major attack against strategic IDF intelligence targets in the center of the country. Hezbollah still managed to launch over 200 rockets, missiles, and drones at northern Israel killing an IDF serviceman. Nevertheless, Israel prevented a much larger disaster. Time will tell if Hezbollah will launch another major strike in the days ahead - as Israel waits for a potential Iranian barrage as well. On today's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten says that reports indicate that Iran and its proxies may strike the Jewish State in the next several days, as retribution for the killing of top Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. Israel took credit for the airstrike on Beirut which took out top Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr, responsible for last week's rocket attack that killed 12 Druze children in the Golan. At the same time, top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was sent to meet his maker after an unclaimed strike in Tehran. Iran has vowed revenge for both attacks. May G-d protect the State of Israel and the Jewish People during these tumultuous times. Photo Credit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ashlandctc/22538410280

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Alan Taylor is Tyler's pick for one of the greatest living historians. His many books cover the early American Republic, American westward expansion, the War of 1812, Virginian slavery, Thomas Jefferson, the revolutionary settlements in Maine, and more. He's currently the Thomas Jefferson Chair of History at the University of Virginia. Tyler and Taylor take a walking tour of early history through North America covering the decisions, and ripples of those decisions, that shaped revolution and independence, including why Canada didn't join the American revolution, why American in turn never invaded Canada (and who would've won), American's early obsession with the collapse of the Republic, how democratic the Jacksonians were, Texas/Mexico tensions over escaped African American slaves, America's refusal to recognize Cuban independence, how many American Tories went north post-revolution, Napoleon III's war with Mexico, why the US Government considered attacking Canada after the Civil War, and much more. In 2014, Boko Haram militants drove into Gwoza in north-east Nigeria and began an assault that would leave hundreds of people dead.Ruoyah, who was just 14, hid in her house for eight hours under continuous fire. She says when she finally opened the door to leave her house she says: "There were corpses everywhere, we even saw the corpse of our neighbour in our front door." Ruoyah managed to escape to Cameroon, but her sister was kidnapped by Boko Haram militants. She was taken into the Sambisa forest where she was forced to marry a militant and starved.A few months later, Boko Haram's leader unilaterally declared that Gwoza was a caliphate. Ruoyah now lives in an internally displaced persons camp, she speaks to Anoushka Mutanda-Dougherty.Archive credit: Channels Television.(Photo: Credit: )

The IDF this week revealed that troops discovered at least 50 tunnels leading from Egypt into Rafah. On today's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten says that obviously the Egyptians knew that Hamas was importing weapons, literally under their noses, but failed to act. At the same time Egypt has reinforced their above ground border, not letting Gazans flee into their country. Nevertheless, the anti-Israel haters ignore Egypt (and Hamas) and blame the Jewish State for everything going on in Gaza. On this week's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten discusses Israel's Memorial Day - Yom Hazikaron, which this year carries many fresh wounds following the October 7, massacre. He also discusses the Biden Administration's decision to impose an arms embargo against the Jewish State in the middle of a just war to defeat Hamas evil. Prime Minister Netanyahu insists that Israel will finish off Hamas, on our own, if necessary. Plus, Israel gears up for Independence Day - Yom Ha'azmaut even as the war wages on, with Israeli troops now fighting in Rafah and in other parts of Gaza. Chag Sameach to all! Around the world, threats to freedom of expression and association are growing. One crucial example is found in Georgia, a struggling democracy with a population of just under four million people. Last year, the Georgian parliament withdrew proposed legislation targeting so-called “foreign agents” that was strikingly similar to such stifling legislation in Russia. At the time, the draft law stimulated widespread demonstrations in Georgia, temporarily pausing the law's advance. However, on April 3, 2024, the Georgian ruling party reintroduced the widely unpopular law, renewing the struggle and generating fresh mass protests within Georgia and widespread condemnation internationally. On March 29, 2024, Tinatin Khidasheli, chairperson of the Tbilisi-based NGO Civic Initiative for Democratic and Euro-Atlantic Choice (Civic IDEA), joined Christopher Walker, vice president for studies and analysis at the National Endowment for Democracy, to discuss laws and narratives that ostensibly combat “foreign influence” but, in practice, have the effect of restricting fundamental freedoms and civic space. They unpack how Georgian society mobilized in 2023 to resist the adoption of the restrictive law and what lessons this holds for those who want to push back against weaponized narratives and restrictive foreign influence laws elsewhere. For further insights on related issues, check out the International Forum's companion blog, “Power 3.0 Understanding Modern Authoritarian Influence.” You can find additional resources on the NED website and join the conversation with us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. As world Jewry commemorates Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day, on today's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten says that the same Jew-hatred which existed in Nazi Germany is very much alive today. Hasten said that while the October 7 massacre isn't the Holocaust, the same ideology - which seeks to wipe the Jewish People off the face of the earth is very much alive in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, in Europe, and on college campuses in the United States, in the form of Jihad. Israel took responsibility for accidentally striking a group of Gazan aide workers this week, and opened an investigation. This is war, and mistakes certainly happen, yet this story continues to dominate the news cycle. However, when the US accidentally killed 10 civilians including seven children in Kabul in 2021, the story came and went within a matter of hours. On today's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten exposes the world's hypocrisy. Bottom line - no Jews, no news. Photo Credit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/169738192@N02/46883867705
This week, the United States, under President Joe Biden, abstained from an anti-Israel UN Security Council Resolution, thus allowing it to pass. The resolution, calling on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, failed to condemn Hamas and failed to include an Israeli hostage release as part of the ceasefire. The fact that Hamas celebrated the passage of the (non-binding) resolution, says it all. Josh Hasten discusses this story, and all the latest news from Israel, on this week's Israel Uncensored. On today's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten shares that a senior Israeli official slammed a U.S. intelligence report claiming that the government of Prime Minister Netanyahu is in jeopardy. In other words, this self-fulfilling prophecy attempt is another sign that the Biden Administration wants Netanyhu and his right-wing government out of power. At the same time, it was reported that Biden and company are considering withholding U.S. military aid should Israel try to finish off Hamas in the southern Gaza town of Rafah. Israel has made clear that it must destroy the remaining Hamas battalions in Rafah in order to achieve victory over the terrorist organization.
