After a caesarean section on his labour ward went catastrophically wrong, Adam Kay took a radical inventory of his entire life. CW: traumatic childbirth, eating disorders.Adam was not far off qualifying as an obstetric consultant in the United Kingdom, when he decided he couldn't be a doctor any longer. He couldn't face ever again experiencing the tragedy of death during childbirth, nor could he understand the blunt response from his boss in the aftermath, and so he quit doctoring altogether. After a period of grief and depression, Adam reassessed his goals, his dreams and his relationships, completely up-ending the conventional life he had felt backed into.He turned to the diaries, which he had kept throughout his seven years working in hospitals, and became a stand-up comedian, then a television writer, an acclaimed author, the executive producer of a wildly popular TV series based on Adam's book, and most recently a father.CONTENT WARNING: This episode of Conversations contains accounts of traumatic childbirth and of disordered eating, which may distress some listeners.Help and support is always available. Adam Kay knew exactly who he wanted to play him in the TV version of his life. After spending years working in hospitals across the UK, mostly in obstetrics and gynaecology, Adam—completely burnt out—took a break. What was meant to be a short pause turned into 14 years and counting. During his training in the labour wards, Adam kept a diary. Those diary entries would later become a best-selling book (This Is Going To Hurt, which sold over 5 million copies), and eventually a hit TV series starring Ben Whishaw as Adam. In this candid, emotional, and at times hilarious conversation, Adam talks about: – The human cost of being a doctor– Why mental health support in medicine is so urgently needed– What changes are essential—both in the UK and here in Australia– And… the strangest things people have turned up to hospital with inside their bodies. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who’s ever been a patient, worked in healthcare, or simply wants to understand the real cost of caring. If you'd like to see Adam Kay live in Australia, he's currently touring the country. You can look at his tour dates here. The tenor Russell Watson's remarkable career took him from playing from working mens clubs in Salford to performing at the Vatican. But his life hasn't been completely charmed - he discusses the brain tumour that threatened his life as well as his voice and how he found his way back to centre stage.Jackie Kay is one of the UK's most lauded poets who turned to writing as a child as a sanctuary from the difficulties of life as an adopted, if much loved, half-Nigerian child in Scotland. A new BBC One documentary tells her story "In Her Own Words"; we'll be asking why she wanted to do that. Doctor-turned-comedian-turned-author Adam Kay's first book This Is Going To Hurt sold over 3 million copies and was adapted into a multi award-winning TV series. Now he's taken another career turn into children's fiction with a new character – Dexter Procter, the ten year old doctor. As an actress Deborah McAndrew played Angie Freeman on Coronation Street in the 1990s. She left the Rovers Return behind long ago for a career as a writer and her latest play tells the story of the night an Unidentified Flying Object landed near Stoke-on-Trent's Bentilee housing estate. The show draws on multiple eyewitness accounts from the time to create a warm and funny depiction of an extraordinary event happening to very ordinary people. Adam Kay has had an interesting career path. The UK comedian and bestselling author started off as a doctor, leaving after undiagnosed symptoms led to severe complications and a stillborn during one of his surgeries. He went on to write This is Going to Hurt, a book based on the diaries he wrote during his time as a doctor, which went on to sell more than five million copies worldwide. Kay has since turned the book into a comedy show which sold out on the West End, and was also turned into a miniseries. He's bringing the comedy show to kiwi audiences as part of the NZ International Comedy Festival, taking to the stage on May 1st. Coming from a very normal background, fame has been interesting for Kay, telling Mike Hosking that it's been weird to have people come up and ask for photos. “It's quite weird that more people know me than I know people,” he said. “But I'm getting used to it and I'm just, I'm glad all these people have watched my shows, or read my books, or whatever and want to say hi.” Performing on stage has a different energy to selling books, the latter being quite abstract according to Kay. “You get an email from the publisher saying congratulations on this many copies, or it's been published in this many languages, but going on stage, and you know, speaking, hopefully amusing people in their, in their thousands, it's like nothing on earth.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we're talking about This Is Going to Hurt, a wonderful and gruesome book about Adam Kay's experience in medicine. We discuss how well written this book is and how well integrated its themes are, and how we relate to it with several of our own personal experiences in the workforce. Also, why we hate even more awkward interactions with cashiers. (Recorded November 26th, 2023.)

Yorkshire born actor, Samuel Edward-Cook made his screen debut in the BBC One series LAND GIRLS, before landing the role of Danny Whizz-Bang in the highly acclaimed and BAFTA award-winning crime drama PEAKY BLINDERS alongside Cillian Murphy, Joe Cole and Helen McCrory. Other television credits include the ITV miniseries BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, the ITV anthology series INNOCENT, the long-running BBC series SILENT WITNESS, and the Channel 4 comedy-drama PURE. Samuel will soon appear playing Ceri Davies in BETTER, a BBC series by Sister Pictures, the production company behind THIS IS GOING TO HURT, CHERNOBYL and GANGS OF LONDON, among many others. The crime drama follows a corrupt police detective who undergoes a major moral awakening and makes amends of her wrongdoings of the past. The series will also star Leila Farzad (I HATE SUZIE), Andrew Buchan and Anton lesser. Also in 2023, Samuel will play Isaac Hartley in Shane Meadows' highly anticipated BBC drama THE GALLOWS POLE, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers. Loosely based on true events, the six-part series set in 18th century Yorkshire will recount the rise and fall of David Hartley and the Crag Vale Coiners. The series will also star Michael Socha (PAPILLON), George Mackay (1917), Thomas Turgoose (THIS IS ENGLAND), Tom Burke (THE SOUVENIR) and Sophie McShera (DOWNTON ABBEY). As well as his screen credits, Samuel has numerous theatre credits, including BOYS for Headlong, directed by Robert Icke, Matthew Quintal in Richard Bean's PITCAIRN directed by Max Stafford-Clark, TITUS ANDRONICUS at Shakespeare's Globe, Edmund in Lucy Bailey's contemporary adaptation of KING LEAR, staring David Haigh and portraying Captain Wentworth in the Royal Exchange Theatre production of PERSUASION. His performance as Haimon in Ivo van Hove's production of ANTIGONE alongside Juliette Binoche attracted rave reviews, with theatre critic Stephen Collins praising his “passion” and "extraordinary range of emotions”. The play itself was described as “undeniably impressive” by The Independent and as a "production that combines a sombre aesthetic beauty with a sense of the ambivalence at the heart of Sophocles's play” by The Guardian.

We're swooning, and it's for good reason! We've come across men dressing up for their daughters on Tik Tok! Which leads us to a suggestion that dresses are probably better for men anyway! And it's time for a little bit of a catchup on what's been going on with our bodies. Angie's been re-introducing her body to some things after her surgery like alcohol. Plus we come to a conversation about why alcohol is such a social thing in Australia and how sometimes we use it all for the wrong reasons. Chris Fry has the best CFO job in the world. He's group CFO at SISTER. SISTER is the organisation behind recent TV blockbusters "The Split"; "This Is Going To Hurt"; and "Chernobyl". So why is the CFO of a TV production company the best job in the world? First of all, it's a very demanding position that comes with a lot of responsibility. But if you're up for the challenge, it can be extremely rewarding. You'll have a hand in the creative process and you'll be able to help shape the future of the company. Chris has certainly been up for that challenge. He's an accomplished CFO but he also recognises that there's always something new to learn. Chris was one of the founder members of the CFO Programme within GrowCFO, having previously been involved in something similar during his time working in Australia. He talks about the programme in the podcast and why it has been so useful for him. He tells us why he has found the support from Catherine Clark, the programme leader, and from his fellow CFO participants, invaluable. Happy Tuesday friends! Welcome back to That's So Chronic. Of course I'm bias, but you are in for a treat this episode! I get to sit down and chat to my friend Laura Sheridan all about her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) In this episode Laura explains how her MS diagnosis came to be, how she navigated traveling around South East Asia so soon after that diagnosis, her experience changing to different treatments, and the big one: moving to NZ from Ireland and having to manage visas, doctors, insurance, as well as her MS. You might recognise Laura from her previous That's So: episode where we discussed Adam Kay's book This Is Going To Hurt! Today I'm sitting down with my friend and midwife Laura Sheridan to chat about Adam Kay's best selling book This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor. The book is broken up into chapters filled with diary entries of Adam's experiences as a doctor working in obstetrics and gynaecology. Whether you have read this book yet or not you are in for an absolute treat (we don't give too much away!) For Christmas Day, here's a repeat of our interview from June 2018 with Adam Kay. Adam Kay is an award-winning comedian and writer for TV and film, including Mitchell & Webb and Very British Problems. He previously worked as a junior doctor, detailing his funny and sad experiences in his first book This Is Going To Hurt. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As a teenager I fantasised about becoming Dr Barr but work experience in a hospital put me off, undoubtedly saving lives, mine included. Adam Kay was born into a family of medics and felt he had no choice but to don a white coat. Nothing could prepare him for the joys and horrors of being a junior doctor. His Secret Diaries have sold to over 25 countries, held the top of the bestseller charts for six months - thus sustaining the British publishing industry - and he’s performing them on stage to record crowds and adapting them for the BBC. Proustian mediatation on love and desire? Atmospheric beach read? What did Laura's book club make of André Aciman's Call Me By Your Name? First published in 2007 and recently made into an Oscar-nominated film, the story follows 17-year-old Elio's obsession with charismatic houseguest Oliver. But were we carried away by Aciman's evocation of one long passionate summer? Or did it leave us only with a feeling we should start planning our July getaways now? Our interview is with Kay Dunbar, founder of the Ways With Words literary festivals, who lets us in on the secret to running a successful bookclub for over twenty years. And we finish with some great recommendations for your next book club read. • Find out more about Kay Dunbar's Ways With Words festivals at www.wayswithwords.co.uk • Episode booklist: The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe, Barracuda by Christos Tsioklas, Olivia by Dorothy Strachey and At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill. Kay Dunbar mentions Patrick Gale, whose most recent novel is A Place Called Winter. In this 51st episode of Chats (for you), James Walker chats to Sam Irving & Will Naameh - two very well-versed improvisers, and members of the improv group Spontaneous Sherlock. An interesting, in-depth chat about improv - interspersed with stupid, on-the-spot questions from yours truly. I improv'd the shit out of some Qs, guys. Also, the books by friends of the show plugged at the end were - James Acaster's Classic Scrapes, and This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay. Matt and Brett are joined by two Spider-Man aficionados — Kevin Hines (UCB) and Mark Ginocchio (Chasing Amazing) — to discuss a question that comedian Glenn Boozan has about the nature of heroism: is vulnerability really a hero’s greatest strength? This Amazing Spider-Panel dives deep into some of Spider-Man’s biggest themes in order to answer that multi-layered query. Glenn Boozan is a comedian at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. Her show, This Is Going To Hurt is running right now! Kevin Hines can be seen weekly with his improv team The Curfew. He also appeared on our 100th episode. Mark Ginocchio is a comic book journalist who writes “Gimmick or Good” for CBR. You can follow his quest to own every issue of Amazing Spider-Man at Chasing Amazing, and listen to his podcast, Superior Spider-Talk. Next week on the show, we will be reading Rat Queens #1-5 from Image Comics by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch. You can purchase the series digitally on Comixology.
