German political scientist, author and climate activist Tadzio Müller is pretty dark. But even he's having trouble coping with the news. So he's reading dystopian climate fiction, because it's less depressing. Most recently, friend-of-the-show Stephen Markley's The Deluge.Given the week that's in it we of course had to talk about the wildfires but also the rise of Alice Weidel and Tadzio decoding her “Windmills of Shame” comment, which to a non-German just sounds like Trump with better writing but to this German sounds a lot more purposeful and sinister. Tadzio argues it would be a mistake to ignore the fact that there is a coherent political strategy at work behind those kind of daft-sounding comments that fly in the face of supposedly overwhelming support for climate solutions whether they're from AfD, Donald Trump, or Nigel Farage.Tadzio has his own book out - available later this spring in English - the rough translation of the title is Between Peaceful Sabotage and Collapse: How I Learned to Love the Future Again. But don't wait - after you listen or watch this third chat between your friendly neighbourhood neoliberal shill here and this German gay communist being far more articulate in English than the native speaker, subscribe to his “Peaceful Sabotage” newsletter to get a sense. Unlike the grumpier, earnest end of the climate movement, the great thing about Tadzio is that he (despite being as prone to depression as I am) is just so damned funny. But we did our best to keep him honest - despite the fact that when we first spoke a year ago we both made some predictions about 2024. If anything, his dark foreboding low-balled how bad the year would be. In 2025 I think we're probably more in sync. And careful listeners will hear him trail “Collapse Camp” - a successor to “climate camp” - which will be apparently a mini-festival at the end of August where you can share bushcraft and other survival tips for coming climate catastrophes while also doing the things festivals are generally known for. We'll keep you informed. Elaine Benfield joins the Moms for Trans Kids Podcast to share her journey of supporting her gender diverse child. She discusses the importance of being an ally and creating a safe and affirming environment for her child. Elaine also talks about the challenges of navigating the healthcare system and finding affirming professionals for her child's transition. In addition, she introduces her podcast, Her Stories, which highlights the achievements and experiences of remarkable women. As society continues to evolve, it is essential that we prioritize the well-being and rights of transgender children. By embracing diversity, challenging societal norms, and advocating for accessible mental health care, we can create a future where all children, regardless of their gender identity or neurodivergent traits, can thrive and live authentically. Key Takeaways: Supporting and affirming gender diverse children is crucial for their well-being and happiness. It is important to find affirming healthcare professionals who can guide and support the transition process. Rainbow families, with diverse gender and sexual orientations, can provide a supportive and accepting environment for children. Her Stories is a podcast that amplifies the voices of inspiring women and their experiences. In the summer of 1980, nineteen-year-old Nancy Santomero, and two friends, twenty-six-year-old Vicki Durian and nineteen-year-old Liz Johndrow, left Durian's parents' home in Iowa to hitchhike to West Virginia to attend a gathering of the Rainbow Family. Five days later, Santomero and Durian's bodies were discovered in the woods in West Virginia, shot to death just hours before being found, and Johndrow was nowhere to be seen.More than a decade after their bodies were discovered, police in West Virginia had identified several suspects and eventually charged thirty-four-year-old farmer Jacob Beard, who was convicted in 1993 and sentenced to life in prison. Upon appeal, however, it was revealed that the investigation into Beard was rife with dubious circumstantial evidence, police misconduct, and perjury, which led to a new trial and Beard was exonerated. We all recall the beginning of COVID when everyone was being told to isolate at home with their families, and this is exactly where this week's story begins. This week's story is about a 3-and-a-half-year-old named Norah and her imaginary rainbow family. At the start of the pandemic, Katlynn was heavily pregnant with her third child, and they were forced to stay totally isolated as a family for quite a while. Two months into quarantine, Norah calls for a family dinner and has an announcement: she isn't part of this family, she is part of her rainbow family, the one that lives in the clouds. Norah's rainbow family was always on some amazing adventure that was way cooler than what Katlynn's family was doing in their daily lives. The rainbow family helped Norah navigate periods of isolation at the beginning of COVID and even death as COVID got worse. The rainbow family was super cool and eventually, her rainbow family became a leverage tool she tried to use with her actual human mom. In this episode, hear more about Norah's rainbow family and how Katlynn managed this imaginary family her daughter had created. Learn how the rainbow family progressed over the years, how the real family dealt with it, and where Norah is now with regard to her rainbow family. “We thought this was probably just her way of coping with being in lockdown. Her rainbow family sounded like everything we did as a family before COVID, so we figured this must just be her way of coping.” - Katlynn In This Episode: - Find out why it became so hard for Katlynn and her family to compete with the rainbow family. - Hear the struggles Katlynn faced as she navigated helping her children cope with a pandemic that affected everyone. - Katlynn shares how Norah's rainbow family taught her to navigate and process death. - Even after COVID, the rainbow family stuck around. Here's how it changed… - Learn how to use Katlynn's experience of a rainbow family if your child has an imaginary world. From Teal Swan's icy glare to the DayLife Army's 'Tumple' of sex magick, this week the Ghouls are diving into the deep end (pun very much intended) of the modern day cults anyone can join online. Listen now to learn which Ghoul briefly dated a member of the Rainbow Family, which Ghoul believes the ritual sacrifice of babies "isn't a very profitable business model," and why everyone needs to go watch SyFy's short-lived, CreepyPasta-inspired anthology series "Channel Zero" immediately. Since Meow Wolf opened the doors to Convergence Station in Denver last year, the Santa Fe-based arts collective-turned-corporation has been the talk of the town. They brought jobs, global clout, and millions of dollars to the often overlooked Sun Valley neighborhood. But the company has also struggled with lawsuits related to gender discrimination in Denver and fair pay issues in its home state. Now, the Meow Wolf Workers Collective says employees here have taken steps to unionize. Today on the show, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are joined by Denver Post arts reporter and critic John Wenzel, whose recent piece digs into the unionization efforts at the Denver Meow Wolf outpost. Bree also mentioned this story past guest Jason Blevins wrote for the Colorado Sun this week about the Rainbow Family gathering, which went down last week in Routt National Forest Still don't have plans for the weekend? The Utah accent. Sometimes it can be hard to pin down or describe to those not living here. But it exists, especially in rural southern parts of the state. And new research suggests that it's more complicated than you might think. Plus, the BLM has a new plan to replace the boardwalk at the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite. It includes safety precautions to protect the 112-million-year-old fossils while construction work is completed. And, the Forest Service is bracing for a large gathering of the Rainbow Family in Colorado. // Show Notes // Photo: Unique arches in Arches National Park. Aderonke is a Nigerian LGBTQ Activist and the founder of African Rainbow Family charity- a UK-Based organization that supports LGBTIQ people of African heritage and the wider Black and Asian Minority Ethnic groups. Aderonke was born and raised in Nigeria where being gay is illegal. When she was found to be a lesbian she suffered intense persecution. Aderonke fled to the UK to seek asylum. Despite fearing imprisonment and death in her country, Aderonke was not believed and she languished in the asylum system for years with her claim being repeatedly refused by the UK authorities.
