Das führt zu einer kleinen, aber nachdenklichen Diskussion über Stressresilienz und die therapeutische Kraft von Filmen. Passend dazu hat sich Timo mit einem schweren Thema beschäftigt und die Dokumentation Riefenstahl über die NS-Propagandafilmerin Leni Riefenstahl gesehen. Um das Werk einordnen zu können, hat er sich vorher sogar ihren berüchtigten Propagandafilm Triumph des Willens angesehen. Das führt zu einer tiefgehenden Diskussion über die Trennung von Kunst und Künstler, die Faszination für filmisches Handwerk und die moralische Komplexität, ein solches Werk zu bewerten. Danach widmen sich die Jungs dem Conjuring-Universum und The Conjuring: Last Rites, dem vierten Teil der Hauptreihe. Beide waren eher unterwältigt: Zeljko fand den Hauptplot am schwächsten in der Serie, und Timo empfand die neuen Geister als uninspiriert. Ein solide produzierter Film, der aber das Gefühl hinterlässt, dass es Zeit wird, das Kapitel um die Warrens abzuschließen. Anschließend steht der Horror-Thriller Stay auf dem Programm, und hier gehen die Meinungen auseinander. Zeljko fand das Ehedrama mit Horrorelementen und afrikanischer Folklore durchaus ansprechend. Timo hingegen war von der Story gelangweilt, empfand die Rückblenden als Füllmaterial und konnte dem Ende nichts abgewinnen. Ein Film, der sein Potenzial leider nicht ausschöpfen konnte. Der Film der Woche ist diesmal The Monkey, der neue Horrorfilm von Osgood Perkins (Longlegs), basierend auf einer Kurzgeschichte von Stephen King. Und hier sind sich beide einig: Der Film macht verdammt viel Spaß! Entgegen der Erwartung eines düsteren Gruselfilms entpuppt sich The Monkey als eine herrlich skurrile und witzige Horrorkomödie mit Final Destination-Vibes. Der titelgebende Spielzeugaffe sorgt für eine Reihe kreativer und blutiger Kills, die Timo mehrmals laut lachen ließen. Ein simpler, aber extrem unterhaltsamer Film, der genau weiß, was er sein will und perfekt in die Horrorsaison passt. Eine Folge, die von intensiven Doku-Analysen über Franchise-Müdigkeit bis hin zu einem absurd-lustigen Horror-Highlight reicht – wie immer mit viel Leidenschaft, Humor und persönlichen Einblicken. German director Andres Veiel joins us to discuss his expected Oscar-contending documentary Riefenstahl, about Leni Riefenstahl who was known as Hitler's favorite filmmaker. After World War II  Riefenstahl tried to play down her role in furthering Nazi ideology through her 1930s films including Triumph of the Will and Olympia, claiming she was just an artist who had taken on assignments from Hitler and his minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbles. But Veiel digs into Riefenstahl's archive, including drafts of her memoir, audio tapes and other sources to reveal she was very much in sync with what Hitler stood for. In the 1930s, Leni Riefenstahl infamously directed two propaganda films, Triumph of the Will and Olympia, for the Nazi Party. For the rest of her life, which ended in 2003, she denied knowledge of the regime's crimes, including the Holocaust. In 2016, her heirs gave her estate, which included a vast collection of personal documents, correspondence, and film and tape recordings, to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which itself gave permission to Sandra Maischberger and Andres Veiel, a journalist and filmmaker respectively, to use the material as the basis of a documentary. Riefenstahl, comprising countless elements of the archive, along with documents from other sources, builds a biography of a person who never came clean about what she knew about Nazi Germany, and never took responsibility for her part in it. It's a complex and layered examination of a life led between pride and denial, and has resonances today: take Riefenstahl's television appearance in 1976 alongside Elfriede Kretschmer, an anti-Nazi activist and contemporary who refuses to believe her claims of ignorance during wartime, which is followed by recordings of phone calls to Riefenstahl in support of her stance and contempt for Kretschmer. The line between those calls and the metastasising popularity of extreme right-wing, "anti-woke" and similar ideologies today is self-evident, as is the difference between ideas expressed publicly and privately. Riefenstahl is more outspoken off the record than on it, demanding interviewers' cameras be turned off to prevent them from capturing candid revelations. In this sense and others, her life provides a window into fascism - what drives it - her initial response to seeing and hearing Adolf Hitler speak is almost sexual - what it represents and offers to its adherents, and how it shrinks and cowers when it doesn't get everything it wants. It's a problem for Mike that the film doesn't seem to think that the artistic and cultural impact of Riefenstahl's work is worth exploring, where to him it's the most interesting thing about her. Not only were her films technically and artictically innovative - something claimed by subjects in the film but not explained or examined - but her work arguably gives the Nazis their key, and enduring, victory. As thuggish and vile as the regime was, and despite its collapse, through Triumph of the Will and Olympia it created an image of itself as glorious and powerful with which we continue to associate it, and to which neo-Nazis today aspire to emulate. Few filmmakers have left a cultural legacy of such significance and duration, but the documentary isn't interested in the work - only the person. Quibbles apart, Riefenstahl is an excellent example of how to tell a complex tale with intention, clarity, and concision, while allowing for interpretation of the material presented, and it'll be the basis of endless conversations. Zum Ende des 19. Jahrhundert wurden verschiedene Reformbewegungen, die auf die veränderten Arbeitsverhältnisse der Industrialisierung und die Veränderungen der Lebensumstände in wachsenden Großstädten regierten, unter dem Begriff Lebensreform zusammengefasst. Ein Strang der Reformen war ein neues Körperbild, ein Streben, die durch die industrielle Entwicklungen von der Natur entfremdeten Menschen zu einem gesunden und mit der Natur sich im Einklang befindenden Zustand zurück zu führen. Von diesen Vorstellungen führt allerdings auch eine direkte Linie zu den Anschauungen der Nationalsozialisten, die diese Körperertüchtigung rassistisch aufluden und mit einer Wehrertüchtigung kombinierten. Ein Beispiel, an dem man das zeigen kann, ist der Kulturfilm der UFA „Wege zur Kraft und Schönheit“ aus dem Jahre 1925, den das Pinneberger Tageblatt vom 14. April rezensiert. Der hier zelebrierte Körperkult findet sich in manchen Passagen nahezu unverändert im propagandistischen Film „Olympia“ von Leni Riefenstahl aus dem Jahre 1938 wieder. Da erscheint es beinahe als folgerichtig, dass die 1925 noch nicht prominente Tänzerin Leni Riefenstahl in „Wege zur Kraft und Schönheit“ in einer Szene einen Auftritt als Statistin hat. V Ljubljani poteka 27. festival dokumentarnega filma, ki letos predstavlja še posebno zanimiv izbor dokumentarcev z vsega sveta. Kot je v uvodniku zapisal Simon Popek, je tema, ki se letos na programu ponovi večkrat, pristno proti lažnemu, medtem, ko predvsem iz Ukrajine in Palestine prihajata tudi povsem nedvoumni zgodbi o vojni, okupaciji, zatiranju in razčlovečenju. Ogledali smo si dokumentarec o Leni Riefenstahl, arhivsko pripoved o vlogi vlaka v družbenem, političnem in kulturnem kontekstu 20. stoletja, Vlaki, ter film Glasba za vojaški udar. Pogovarjali smo se z Majo Weiss, ki so ji ob 60-letnici na festivalu posvetili retrospektivo. Ocenjujemo pa tudi novi film Bonga Džuna Hoja, znanstveno-fantastično črno komedijo Mickey 17.
