Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Every band/artist has to have a first album.  Sometimes those albums are good, sometimes they're not, and sometimes they just show potential.  This episode, we look at some first albums over the gamut of the rock era that we regard as great, including some Australian albums. You've probably heard of most, but not all. In rock news, we look at Neil Young, The Wiggles (yes!), Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull and Billboard's new list – The Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century.  Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Mick regards this elegant 1973 album from the Velvet Underground co-founder as a stunning listen, and a great intro to John Cale.  Chris Thomas' production is, as usual, precise, while Cale presents some wonderful imagery in the lyrics.   References:  John Cale, Paris 1919, “A Child's Christmas in Wales”, Fragments of a Rainy Season, Brian Wilson, UCLA Symphony Orchestra, Words for the Dying, Dylan Thomas, Chris Thomas, Roxy Music, Eno, Sex Pistols, Pretenders, INXS, Bowie, Lou Reed, Queen, The Police, Outlandos d'Amour, “Can't Stand Losing You”, “Roxanne”, Stewart Copeland, Sting, Rod Stewart, The Tubes, “White Punks on Dope”, “What do you want from life?”, “a baby's arm holding an apple”, Kate Bush, The Kick Inside, David Gilmour, “Wuthering Heights”, Wuthering Heights Day, Roxy Music, Kari-Ann Moller, Chris Jagger, Andy Mackay, saxophone, “Re-make / Re-model", Bryan Ferry, Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, “Do it Again”, “Reelin' in the Years”, “Only a fool would say that”, John Lennon, Imagine, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, "10:15 Saturday Night", Robert Smith, Television, Marquee Moon, Devo, Q: Are We Not Men? A (relatively) in-depth analysis of The Police in just under 20 minutes.Their 1978 debut album, Outlandos d'Amour, reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart on the strength of the singles "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979), became the first of four consecutive No. 1 albums in the UK; its first two singles, "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon", became their first UK number ones. Their next two albums, Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) and Ghost in the Machine (1981), led to further critical and commercial success with two songs, "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", becoming UK number-one singles and Top 5 hits in other countries; the former album was their breakthrough into the US reaching number five on the US Billboard chart.Their final studio album, Synchronicity (1983), was No. 1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy and the US, selling over 8 million copies in the US. Its lead single, "Every Breath You Take", became their fifth UK number one, and only US number one. I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

Featuring songs that were initially intended for Lifehouse, an unreleased rock opera and follow-up to the band's 1969 album, Tommy, the LP included such hits as “Behind Blue Eyes,” and “Won't Get Fooled Again.” In addition to appearing on countless “Best Of” lists over the decades, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.   1978 - The Police released their third single 'Can't Stand Losing You' as the follow-up single to 'Roxanne' which when released the following year peaked at No.2 on the UK chart. Written by singer and bassist Sting as a song about suicide, the song gained minor controversy for its single cover art, featuring Stewart Copeland hanging himself.  In 1985, Michael Jackson won a bid over Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono to own ATV Music's publishing catalog, which boasted the rights to more than 4000 songs – roughly 250 of which were Beatles compositions, penned by Lennon and McCartney.  In 1993, less than two years after his death, Freddie Mercury scored his first solo No.1 hit with a remix of his 1985 single, “Living on My Own.” Jeremiah Tittle, Co-Host of “The 500 with Josh Adam Myers” podcast and CEO/Founder of Next Chapter Podcasts Learn more about your ad choices. For this episode of Influenced, we're tackling the iconic New Wavers, The Police. Formed in late 70s London initially as a punk band, the group fronted by Sting and backed by Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers would quickly digest the sounds of new to the scene artists like Bob Marley and The Wailers and an appreciation for Jazz and Fusion music, began crafting hits like "Can't Stand Losing You" and "Roxanne" which quickly catapulted the band to stardom. Continuing for 5 massive albums, 4 of which would go straight to Np. 1 in the UK along with a number of Grammys, the band left behind a legacy as one of the most popular bands of the time and would go on to inspire acts as diverse as the iconic Joni Mitchell, all the way to modern indie rock in Vampire Weekend and even massive stars like the modern icon Dua Lipa.

1978 was an interesting time for music. Bigger 70s acts like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & Deep Purple were breaking up or having issues. Punk was the hottest thing in the music industry. New wave was on the horizon as was the real game changer in 1981, MTV. Bands that would forge their way to superstardom in the 80s via MTV released their debuts in 1978 - Van Halen, Dire Straits, The Cars and The Police. WIth a young songwriting genius on the bass in Sting, a sturdy veteran of the road & the studio in Andy Summers and an intellectual drumsmith in Stewart Copeland, they were too good to be just another punk band. So they blended reggae, punk, and rock with relatable lyrics and built the foundation on which their sound would grow and take them to immense success. The subjects of the 10 songs on Outlandos D'Amour vary from prostitution (Roxanne), suicide (Can't Stand Losing You), fame (Peanuts) and even a blow-up sex doll (Be My Girl - Sally). And yet it all comes together as a fresh sound that is still identifiable to The Police. These three make a lot of noise but it's mostly upbeat, jump up and down fun, especially on the crescendo building (and The Wolf's personal favorite) So Lonely. The album went platinum in the US & UK (and Canada, France, Australia, etc) and gave The Police the foothold they needed to eventually become the biggest band in the world in 1983 with Synchronicity.

POINT of VIEW International

”Fuck” ”Off” ”You” ”Cunt” stod der på Copelands fire tam-tammer (trommer). I podcasten inviterer Thomas lytteren ind i The Polices øverum. Hvordan opstod kommende klassikere som ”Roxanne”, ”Message in a Bottle”, ”So Lonely”, ”Can't Stand Losing You”?

”Fuck” ”Off” ”You” ”Cunt” stod der på Copelands fire tam-tammer (trommer). Update 2/25/20: Mystery solved! Fabian's mystery song is "Me, Myself, I" by Joan Armatrading. Aquello no tiraba. Hemos escuchado So Lonely, ahora oiremos “Can’t Stand Losing You”, otra joyita. Y no podemos dejar de escuchar la potente “Next to you” Este brillante inicio de su discografía se confirmaría con discos que copaban las listas de ventas de toda Europa como Reggatta de Blanc (1979), álbum que incluye canciones muy conocidas como «Message in a Bottle» o «Walking on the Moon». Efectivamente, Message in a Bottle, muy bien. Ahora escucharemos Walking on the Moon. Otro temazo. Hemos escuchado Don’t Stand So Closet o Me, ahora le toca el turno a De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.

Andy Summers rose to fame in the early 1980’s as the guitarist with the multi-million record selling rock band The Police. Matthew presents #LondonGP - your weekly motor sport and music extravaganza on ZoneOneRadio. This week from Autosport International at the NEC in Birmingham. In what is becoming a bit of a #LondonGP tradition, regular contributor Autosport Editor-in-Chief Andy van de Burgt gives us his predictions for the motor sport year ahead. And we have a quick look back at his predictions from last year to see how he did. That, of course, leaves our regular “Letter from the Editor” slot without a contributor.
