Hope Ankeny - Sermon by Minister Eli Suddarth from July 2, 2023
Tough times. No new show without the loss of another of my musical heroes! This time we say R.I.P. to the one and only Bobby Caldwell. Not the most famous by name but - oh boy - he wrote one of my / everybody's most important West Coast Yacht / AOR / Blue Eyed Soul anthems ever: "What You Won't Do For Love". A song so smooth, soulful and mellow, it is nearly impossible not to dance (slowly), fall in love, make love and feel the sunshine of a Californian coastline to it! It actually is one of the tracks that made me think about starting TOO SLOW TO DISCO. Almost every time I play it someone is coming and says "Thanks" because of a special story they have with it. On the other hand: youngsters come to me asking me about the track, because they know one of the many Hip Hop / R&B tracks (a.o. by 2Pac) that sample it. Millions of stories connected to music like this. Thanks a million, Bobby! Caldwell's other work can be found in the music of Notorious B.I.G., Kool G Rap, Master P, Aaliyah, Nas X, Chance The Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, Little Brother, The Game, Madlib, Robert Glasper. I included Common's "The Light" at the end in a special version with B.C.'s original track "Open Your Eyes" as an intro. So the second half of this month's show is all for Bobby! In the first half you get the best of the best of new smooth tracks from this month, by some of our favourite artists like YGSF, Benny Sings, but also new projects like JIM (of Crazy Penis), who will release a very special modern West Coast album soon, Pearl & The Oysters and a wicked cover version of The Beloved's "Sweet Harmony" by Sirens Of Lesbos. I am sure that Bobby would have approved of all of these tracks because of the musicianship and smoothness surrounding these artists. Enjoy the flight!P.S: looks like Bobby was a pretty cool guy…: He contacted Chance The Rapper out of the blue shortly before his death on Twitter to give him permission to use a sample of his, because he liked Chance's music. Here is Chance's heartbroken tribute:"This never happens. I've never received a message from an artist thanking me for sampling their record. This is a record that hasn't even come out and the legend himself reached out. I was so excited to meet you, I have not felt broken like this at a stranger's passing in so long. You are a true legend and incredible person who I know I will see one day ????? James Campbell's family were unusual. They were the 'singing family'. Everyone on their street knew it - and heard it. They would sing at the drop of a hat and James' father had a barbershop quartet. Every Monday evening James would listen attentively to the sumptuous close harmonies and his father taught him and his siblings to harmonise too. James took this into his adult years. It gave him a lifelong enjoyment and confidence to harmonise with other people, just for fun. One day, when his father is taken very ill, James realises the power of harmony at the hardest of times as he and his family join around his father's hospital bed to sing. In this episode, Matthew Syed explores the importance of harmony and asks whether bringing in musical ideas could help bring us a little more harmony in our lives. We get a lesson in close harmony singing with folk trio Lady Maisery and consider how the principles of close listening could carry beyond a musical setting. And Matthew explores Plato's ideas about the soul in harmony with Professor Angie Hobbs, the Professor of the Public Understanding of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. And with Ian Cross, Emeritus Professor of Music and Science at the University of Cambridge, Matthew unravels the ways we communicate musically in conversation to signal agreement and to bond, showing the vital importance of musical interaction in bonding. Presenter: Matthew Syed Producer and Series Editor: Katherine Godfrey Executive Producer: Max O'Brien Music, Sound Design and Mix: Rob Speight Theme music by Ioana Selaru. A Novel production for BBC Radio 4.

Song: Sweet HarmonyBy: Smokey RobinsonPhoto Credit: By Gage Skidmore, Usage: CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=67243788Hi, I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to Explanae Moment. Explanation! A story behind a song! Smokey Robinson gave a beautiful tribute to his singing partners in the Miracles after his departure. The title of the song is "Sweet Harmony" released in 1973 on his studio album by Tamia Records. The song was a very nice, moving, and touching. And Smokey was an awesome songwriter. In the song, "Sweet Harmony", Smokey Robinson was wishing the Miracles well. I remember a radio station called Solid Gold Soul in N.C. That station is where I first heard the song. The station played a lot of wonderful Motown oldies, and I didn't know the story behind the song then. All I knew, it was beautiful sounding, and it made me think of world peace.

Being a Music Teacher takes a lot of energy and brain power! At the young age of 38, the notes were just not harmonizing for Dixie and she got caught up in the “chords” of prescription drugs and surgeries (Tubal Ligation and Thyroidectomy). After the surgeries that were supposed to make her feel better, she experienced new symptoms of weight gain, hair loss, lack of energy and problems sleeping, along with additional symptoms on early menopause. Her sister brought her to Hotze Health & Wellness Center where she was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis and had developed a Goiter. Dr. Hotze and his staff started Dixie on a regimen of natural thyroid, bioidentical hormone therapy, vitamins, minerals and a healthy eating plan. Join Dr. Hotze and his long-time guest of 18 years, Dixie Willingham as they discuss her journey from sour notes to sweet harmony! Eamon Downes, a.k.a Liquid, is the man behind one of the defining tunes of the rave generation. Sweet Harmony was a massive crossover hit that took him all around the world...but the fame wasn't something he was looking for, and increasingly, it became more uncomfortable. Eamon continues to tour the world and make music. His insight into the music industry during the 90s, and the adventure he's been on since, is filled with some eye (and ear) opening moments.

During the off season, Cheese shares his favorite golf courses in Vermont and reveals a great spot to see some of Vermont's best fall foliage. The 1990s were when computers really entered the mainstream of architecture. The rise of personal computing, with wider access to inexpensive machines, the world wide web, advances in software and hardware, all took place against the background of global political transformation that at the time was theorised as the End of History, the breakup of the Soviet Union, democratisation, and the apparent rise of a single, global, liberal capitalist world order. But the exploration of CAD, rendering, generative design and CNC manufacture would all be theorised through a pre-existing set of ideas and agendas, drawing heavily on ‘French theory’ — Derrida, (and particularly) Deleuze — and a partially pre-digested blend of complexity mathematics. A sound so sweet to the ears. The melodies of this mix will sing to your soul and melt your sadness away.
In this episode we talk to Gwen Hurt, the Founder and CEO of Shoe Crazy Wine and her business partner Brittny Hurt. Shoe Crazy is a wine company based in Chesterfield, launched in December of 2013 as an online direct to consumer business. We offer 6 delectable varietals [Sweet Harmony, Sauvignon Blanc, Ménage A Red, Chardonnay, Rose and Cabernet Sauvignon]. The wines are available in Costco, Kroger and several restaurants in the VA, NC, DC & MD markets. I didn't grow up under the easiest of circumstances. I was raised by a single mother and as the oldest girl was responsible for helping to raise my siblings. My mother was mostly illiterate, but she found the strength to leave a physically abusive husband. She took us 4 kids, a few dollars and a can of pork and beans and headed north! My mother's example and courage helped shaped the person I am today! Her journey taught me to keep faith and never give up. Sometimes, we had very little to eat and only 1 pair of shoes to wear for the whole year! Card board was our friend. It repaired many a worn out shoe sole. As a kid, I always said to myself, “one day I am going to have enough money to eat until my stomach is full and I am going to buy as many shoes as I want”! Thus, the shoe has always been very symbolic in my life. To me it is the base that supports us on our journeys! Eventually my mom learned to read and write and ultimately earned her Master's Degree! Prior to launching Shoe Crazy Wine, I worked for a Fortune 300 Tech Company. I built a Global Process and Controls organization. I led a high performance, cross cultural team located in multiple geographic locations (The Americas, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe). During my travels I learned to appreciate a smooth glass of wine. I became enamored of the intricacies of wine. My new passion! In 2013 hardship struck. I was downsized by the company in which I had spent 15 plus years and two days later was in a car accident that would take me and my daughter nearly a year to recover from. During my physical therapy and rehabilitation, I made the decision to “NOT” succumb to depression. I told my daughter Brittny that we were going into the wine business. She asked, how many drugs had the emergency room Dr. given me? I chuckled and responded “not enough to stay in this bed and do nothing about my situation.” We both said, “If those Housewives of whatever city could start a wine business, then so could we.” My daughter Brittny is the one that suggested that I name my company something that I love. I love Shoes and Wine. Hence the name Shoe Crazy Wine. Brittny has been with me throughout this journey. We have had ups and downs and personal challenges but through it all, we have had our heart and soul on growing this company into a national brand. The life of an entrepreneur can indeed be very hard and crazy at times. However, perseverance, tenacity, faith and family are paramount. I firmly believe in these core values. I want to share my story and my wines. After all a lot of successful business have been founded due to life's challenges and hardships and have been discussed over a glass of wine. Trance-Mission Episode 02 … “As the Rush Comes” We left the Ambient realm, dropped and landed into Tranceland. With its highs and lows, builds and snare drums, synths and pads! I tried to put together a set, which pursue the trance flow. Do you remember the anticipation, the wait, the tingling, the heat, the chills, the sweats, the raised hair on the skin and the glow? Do you remember the RUSH? Four months of gestation and labour! Time to let this one be judged by the community. Though sloppy at times, I did the best I could.. In spite of the rather chilled first tracks, "As the Rusch Come" has a definite Trance flavour. Beats per minute do not lie, we end up at 136 bpm, it is Trance! Or, how I was recently told, “Progressive Trance”. One word on the long hiatus between uploads: after a month of blissful downtime with the family in Europe, we faced a few tumultuous events once back in Oz. I neither had the time nor the inclination to listen or mix anything. Problems got sorted out and we are hopefully back to the pedestrian, uneventful rhythm I personally love. In many a ways, the break was timely. I was starting to do this just because “I had to”, which really negates the desire I have for a creative outlet. To Lars, I will answer your emails this week. You have my very public apology, I hope you understand. Back to “As The Rush Comes”: Trance can only be a journey, something with a beginning, ebb and flows, to culminate as build-up to a massive “hands up in the air” closing track. This is my first real attempt throughout this Trance Mission, other will come. Playlist: 2010 See The Sun (Aurosonic Intro Remix). Matt Darey & Urban Astronauts feat. Kate Smith 2013 Help Me Understand I Am Not Alone (Echofusion Remix). Ivan Garci, David Devilla feat. Elisabeth Aivar 2012 The Nothing Song (Original Mix) [Xtian Lil’ Edit]. Chicane feat Maxi Jazz 2013 Bliss (Blood Groove & Kikis Remix) [Xtian It’s Yours Edit]. James Woodsfeat. E-Man 2014 Reach Out for Harmony (Sweet Harmony Original Mix vs Xtian Reach Out 4 Love Mash). Blood Groove & Kikis, Marc Evans, Xtian 2012 Choice (Stan Kolev Remix). E-Spectro feat. Escenda 2014 Without You (Original Mix). Blood Groove & Kikis feat. Roland Clark’s sample 2012 Spectrum (Say My Name) (Calvin Harris Extended Mix). Florence & The Machine feat. Ed Weathers’ sample 2013 Phantom (Original Mix) [Xtian Drop the Desire Edit]. Fehrplay feat. Ed Weathers & Paul Alexander’s sample 2014 Falling in My Eyes (Original Mix) [Xtian Turn Me On Edit]. Evave feat Muzzaik samples 2014 More (Joshi Remix) [Xtian Added Pads Edit]. Tess, Ad Brown 2008 What a Wonderful World (EDX's Miami Sunset Mix). Axwell & Bob Sinclar feat. Ron Caroll 2003 As The Rush Comes (Gabriel And Dresden Mix). Motorcycle Highlights: Starting with Track 5, Mashup of “Sweet Harmony” with “Reach Out for Love” vocals.. I had the insane urge to fuse Trance and Soulful House, ensuring that I would insult both tribes.. I do like what I attempted but would love someone with real talent to pursue it to gives this idea the love and care it requires. I sent it to a well-respected friend of mine.. His reaction was priceless “Christian, have you ever heard of mastering?” Well, yes I have but wouldn’t even know where to start! I have posted a frist version on my soundcloud page, I will post the final version in the next few days “See the Sun” from Matt Darey, I had to start with some intro uplifting trance, great vocals, a tune bringing us old trance kids back decades. “Help Me Understand I’m not Alone”: in between Progressive House and Trance, feelgood track, so sweet on the ears, with a great synth layers. “The Nothing Song” from Chicane: for the initiated, Nick used the basic chords of Poppiholla and extended the melody, track chosen to get into the trance vibe. “Bliss” the Blood Groove & Kikis remix. A word on Blood Groove & Kikis, two remixers/producers from Riga, Latvia. They ended up featuring about 3 times in this set, underlining the fact that if you are looking for a current Progressive Trance sound, just go to their soundcould page (https://soundcloud.com/bloodgroove-kikis) and onto Beatport (http://www.beatport.com/artist/blood-groove-and-kikis/189678) to buy their tunes. I added the Jon Cutler/E-man sample in the spirit of the soulful trance fusion vibe I was trying to achieve. A bit gratuitious.. What follows is much better. Reach Out for Harmony Mash-up. The instrumental track “Sweet Harmony” is from Blood Groove & Kikis.. It sounds like Kaskade, when Kaskade decides not to include the electro crap required to sell to the masses. The vocal of Marc Evans', soulful house God. “Choices” from E-Specro.. do not miss, perfect production! Deep and Progressive with a slight trance tinge.. One of my favourite. “Without You” another track from Blood Groove & Kikis, easy instrumental Trance track to use a bridge. Classic Trance structure. “Phantom” from Fehrplay. We are now squarely in Trance land.. I could dance to that! Include the very naughty Ed Weathers Love This Feeling sample.. But really Trance with naughtiness.. I do not think so.. “Falling in My Eyes”.. this is the good feeling, rush uplifting trance I used to absolutely adore with a 2014 production feel.. I am seeing sparkles with this one.. Turn Me On indeed!! “More” from Tess and Ad Brown.. Progressive Trance with a great vocalist.. The most well known three chords in the world.. and yet an original song.. A track like this alone is worth all the crap Trance I had to listen to.. LOVE IT.. And listen to the guitar and tell me where they sampled it from.. “What a Wonderful World” EDX take on the Ron Carroll/Bob Sinclair classic.. I actually reworked the whole set for months before finding the right 2 last tracks.. I am unsure of this one but I needed to jump 12 bpm over 8 minutes and 4 months of labour was enough.. As much as I am unsure of “What a Wonderful World” I know the Gabriel & Dresden remix of “As The Rush Comes” is the fitting track to send you home.. Peak time trance at its very, very best! Enjoy and please, please D A N C E !! I will work on a few additional higher bpm Trance episodes in the next few months.. The ultimate goal being to build the base of a Trance Journey I will play during spring.. In the meantime, I should either do a fun soulful one or something more to the deep or darker side.. A bientôt Xtian
