On our 80th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends what better way to follow up a Road House podcast than by looking at the highlights of pioneering gay director John Schlesinger? We're talking about 1969's Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro, John McGiver, Sylvia Miles, Bob Balaban and Barnard Hughes as well as 1971's Sunday, Bloody Sunday starring Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Murry Head and Dame Peggy Ashcroft topped off with 1975's The Day of the Locust starring William Atherton, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Bo Hopkins, Pepe Serna, Geraldine Paige, Richard Dysart, Lil' Jackie Earl Haley, an even littler Billy Barty and Mrs. Lovey Howell, herself, Natalie Schaeffer. I'm joined this week by the reliably ab-fab crew of my kid-sister and lit major Roseanne Caputi as well as the sensitive cowhand himself, actor, photographer and snappy patter producer par excellence Gordon Alex Robertson! Okay, before we don the fringed suede jackets and find a spot on 43rd St., the synopses: In Midnight Cowboy big, dumb Texan Joe Buck quits his job as a dishwasher and hops on a Greyhound to the big town, New York City with dreams of making his fortune as a male prostitute servicing rich, bored housewives on Park Avenue. After a series of cringe-inducing misfires, Joe finds himself penniless and living in a squalid, condemned apartment with a sickly, limping con man named Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo. With Ratso serving as Joe's manager the only place they can go is straight down. Barely surviving a New York winter, Joe's fortunes finally start to change for the better until a dying Ratso implores Joe to get him to Florida. Sunday, Bloody Sunday slowly--ever so slowly-- catalogues the highs and lows of two middle-aged, upper-class Londoners, one man, Dr. Daniel Hirsch, a perennially single doctor and one woman, Alex Greville a divorcee who both find purpose and vitality in a love triangle with Bob Elkin, a young sculptor in his 20's. The three must deal with abrupt change, loss and acceptance when Bob the sculptor moves to America. The Day of the Locust, based on the 1939 novel by Nathaniel West, follows the course of three, tragic dreamers who came to Hollywood with eyes toward stardom but end up victims of its cold-hearted excess: Tod Hacket, a somewhat idealistic --if a bit rapey set designer from Yale-- who is in love with Fay Greener, a beautiful but talentless day playing actress who refuses to date men that aren't wealthy, and none other than Homer Simpson, a simple, religious and socially awkward accountant who naively takes Fay in to live with him. Was Mr. Schlesinger an all time great? Or a one hit wonder? Find out! From wiki: “The Sentinel is a 1977 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Winner, and starring Cristina Raines, Chris Sarandon, Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith, Sylvia Miles, and Eli Wallach. The plot focuses on a young model who moves into a historic Brooklyn brownstone that has been sectioned into apartments, only to find that the building is owned by the Catholic diocese and is a gateway to Hell. It is based on the 1974 novel of the same name by Jeffrey Konvitz, who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Winner. It also features Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, John Carradine, Jerry Orbach, Tom Berenger, Nana Visitor and Beverly D'Angelo in supporting roles.”Josh is rewatching Project Runway which causes the pair to discuss how mean the 2000s were and all the nasty reality shows and horror films from the era. The year is 1976 and the nominees are: 1. Brenda Vaccaro - Once is Not Enough 2. Sylvia Miles - Farewell, My Lovely 3. Ronee Blakley - Nashville 4. Lily Tomlin - Nashville 5. Lee Grant - Shampoo In 1976 Lee Grant won the Oscar for Best Supporting actress for her role in Shampoo. This was Grant's third nomination and first (and only) win. Brenda Vaccaro won the Golden Globe for Once is Not Enough but I suspect she didn't win because the movie is, in today's standards, a campy (and incest/creepy) mess (although I highly recommend watching it's hilarious). Sylvia Miles was nominated for Farewell, My Lovely starring Robert Mitchum for only being on screen for 8 minutes. Ronee Blakley and the iconic Lily Tomlin were both first time nominees for Robert Altman's Nashville. Critical Condition, released January 16th, 1987, is a Richard Pryor vehicle that is perhaps the most January-esq comedy we've ever done, in that it's not funny, has boring characters, nothing really happens, and was most likely dumped in January because it was bound to be a flop if released in any other month. It's the most wonderful time of the year for two people who buy too many movies and are currently on quarantine...Mint in Box. Jonathan (@Berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) have selected movies to watch this month that one of them own and have never seen...thus the DVD/Bluray...or digital file is still in the box left in mint condition. May seemed like the right time to do this even before the world was ravaged by a virus. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 4 - Midnight Cowboy (1969) Both Jonathan and Corey bought Midnight Cowboy (1969) on Criterion Blu-ray after it was highly recommended to them during an interview way back when. Jonathan actually watched his, but Corey has not and thus it finds its way into this list. Directed by John Schlesinger and starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, and Sylvia Miles the film is about "A naive hustler travels from Texas to New York City to seek personal fortune, finding a new friend in the process." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support
Strange times call for strange content! This week I'm queening out on some recent favorite nuances that have found their way into my life in lockdown. From a perplexing Sylvia Miles in "Midnight Cowboy" to some really wackadoo Italian horror movie soundtracks to Best Supporting Actress winner compilations on YouTube, this is an odd sampling of what's keeping me sane these days. "Shampoo" and its central character of George the horny hairstylist may feel a bit dated today, but it's a great acting showcase for Goldie Hawn as George's charming girlfriend Jill, and certainly for Lee Grant as the ferocious Felicia, earning her an Oscar in a year that really should have gone to any and all of the Women of "Nashville," but that's a whole other episode. We celebrate Grant's best moments in her limited screen time (though certainly more than fellow nominee Sylvia Miles's nominated cameo in "Farewell My Lovely"), plus a fine debut from Carrie Fisher. We also discuss some BSA-rich movies we've watched recently, celebrate a classic sleuth and bloom with renewed love for the Rose women. Follow us! Dennis visits the Hollywood apartment of performer John Cantwell AKA Love Connie to talk about his new show A Little More Love Connie, which is inspired by the life and music of Olivia Newton-John. John recalls the road trip to Houston he took recently where he listened to Olivia's entire catalog and didn't repeat a song until he got to San Antonio...and how that trip help inspire the show. Dennis and John then discuss their favorite ONJ tracks, getting to meet her, the unique quality of her voice, mispronouncing the word Xanadu and the Grease vs. Grease 2 debate. John also talks about guest-starring on RuPaul's Drag Race as RuPaul's personal trainer and creating the Connie-Wood web series for World of Wonder. Then Dennis and John take an online ONJ quiz and crush it. Other topics include: performing as Love Connie for the first time in front of family members, the regrouped Animotion, Sylvia Miles, Slut Rock, the Taylor Swift documentary, gushing to Melissa Leo about the movie Streetwalkin' and getting goosebumps at the mere thought of lip-syncing to a Lisa Hartman song. http://cavernclubtheater.com/

Today is our Summer Sale here at Behind The Curtain: Broadway's Living Legends. Three for one! In this episode you will hear portions of interviews with three guests whose interviews we have not aired. When we decide not to air an interview it’s for many reasons. Either the audio quality was not strong enough, or the guest only wanted certain portions aired, but it is never because what the guest had to see was not interesting. Because of their importance to the evolution of the American musical we wanted to give you our favorite portions of their interviews. Up first is Susan Watson. Susan was the original Kim MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie, Nanette in the 1971 revival of No No Nanette, and was in Ben Franklin in Paris, A Joyful Noise, and many others. We interviewed her over the phone from her home in Los Angeles. John Simon was one of the most controversial theater critics of the 20thCentury. His reviews were vicious, harsh, hysterical, and quite often took the performer’s physical attributes to task. His reviews got him kicked out of the New York Drama Critics Circle. Sylvia Miles dumped food on his head. And, if he gave you a negative review, you can quote it from memory.
