Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, however, we talk about Oscar movies (!), or better yet, movies that were snubbed of Oscar! Conor and Dan welcome the wonderful Joe Reid & Chris Feil of the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. An official podcast crossover! In today's episode, we each choose an Oscar snub that still sticks in our craw, and use them as a jumping off point for the categories of that respective year. We reference two great past Oscar Buzz eps (A Thousand Acres & Elizabethtown), the lasting influence of Lisa Gerrard, Dan's favorite film performance, Joe's love for Marcelo Zarvos' brilliant score for The Door in the Floor, Chris' admiration of the singular costume (and production) design in Down With Love, and Conor's need to speak up for the masterful Deep Cover. Laurence Fishburne's lead performance specifically. And also, we cannot get around talking about that infamous 2011 James Franco hosting debacle. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter at @TFSBSide. “Between you and me, being a woman is a dangerous business.” So says Madam Parks to young Eliza Ripple, who is now working as a prostitute in Gold Rush-era California after her brutish husband was killed in a bar fight. Eliza knows this truth all too well. But instead of letting that truth paralyze her, she leans into the danger that freedom brings. When some of her fellow working girls go missing, Eliza and friend Jean take it upon themselves to investigate the murders — a mystery the male authorities in Monterey are content to ignore. Jane Smiley's newest novel, “A Dangerous Business,” is murder mystery lite, topped with a hefty dollop of feminist energy. Both Smiley and her heroines are inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” but unlike Poe, Smiley gives her characters a delightful sense of possibility. This week, on Big Books and Bold Ideas, MPR News host Kerri Miller talked with Smiley about the California landscape that so often gives shape to her books , how her discovery of the an obscure religions group influenced this story, and how movement unknots problems, both in writing and in life. Guest: Jane Smiley is the author of numerous novels, including “A Thousand Acres,” which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. This Pfriday takes us back to Shakespeare, as we harvest all we can from A THOUSAND ACRES, the Michelle Pfeiffer/Jessica Lange-led retelling of King Lear. A passion project for both actresses, this dark drama had a long, winding road from Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to a finished film neither particularly loved. We track this movie from start to finish, including Lange's Golden Globe nom and the outstanding landscape for awards in 1997, but the main focus is the joy of watching two titanic (see what we did there?) actresses act so beautifully opposite one another. Exploring how sun and soil, time and place effect the varieties our sexual expression. From electrically charged sex toys to sex inspired by farm animals, despite all of our regional and ethnic differences, we all have that same universal urge to merge. Our readings are from "The Good Parts, The Best Erotic Writing In Modern Fiction", an anthology of erotic writings edited by J.H. The first story in this episode is "The Ring Of Brightest Angels Around Heaven", a story that requires an electrostim cockring and buttplug to be told. Written by Rick Moody from Brooklyn New York, who is extensively published with a series of novels. This is the title story from his short story collection. Our second story is about sexuality informed by midwestern American farm life and occasionally inspired by farm animals. Our reading is an excerpt from the Pulitzer prize winning novel "A Thousand Acres" written by Jane Smiley from Ames Iowa.Dozens of stories from America's finest literary minds, each one exquisitely individual from all the others, and yet every one trying to feed and fulfill the erotic urge that wells up in every one of us.Every warm blooded humanwants to find their way to the glories of sexin every city, town, and village on the planethumans passionately press themselves togetherto try to make sexmen and women feverishly rub themselves togetherto try to make sparksdeep in the nightunder the cover of darknessin the broad daylightbacked up deep into a shady turnoffout along some old country roadas long as women know what they wantas long as men know where to gowe will stoke the fires of human sexualityin our multitude of waysin every space and placemen and women will live outthe urge to mergeUsing the word poetry very loosely.

Jane Smiley, whose latest novel is “Perestroika in Paris,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. The author of sixteen adult fiction novels, two short story collections, five non-fiction works plus several young adult novels, Jane Smiley is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of “A Thousand Acres,” and more recently The Last Hundred Years Trilogy. She current teaches creative writing. “Perestroika in Paris” is a departure from her other works. Clearly an adult novel, it focuses on several animals on the loose in Paris in 2008, including a horse named Perestroika (Paras), based in part on Jane Smiley's own horse of the same name, a dog named Frida (based in part on Jane Smiley's own German short-haired pointer) and an array of other creatures, all of whom communicate with one another, and create a bond with a young orphan named Etienne, who lives with his elderly grandmother near the Eiffel Tower. As Jane points out in the interview, in an era when we are overwhelmed with angst in politics and during the pandemic, a book that takes us far away can often seem like a necessary relief.
