Jessica Barness, design scholar and scholarly designer, recently began exploring a new design sci-fi writing project that deals with blacklisted visual tools and biopreferences. When Jessica was last on the show, we discussed the Wim Wenders science fiction, dystopian movie Until the End of the World. In this episode, we talk about (what is far from a 2024 Christmas Holiday Special) Nosferatu from Robert Eggers, comparing it to prior vampire movies and critiquing facial hair, British accents, vampire hunters and academics, pre-tenure packets, and failed scholarly pursuits.-Jessica Barness investigates connections among and within design systems, from sensory media to publication histories, often found at the edges of design discourse. As Professor of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University she teaches design research and interaction design. She also serves as Design Incubation's Co-chair and Director of Research Initiatives. Director Wim Wenders has inspired the likes of Beyonce and Kevin Smith, among others, and while he's known for Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas, his lesser-known epic Until the End of the World is equally fantastic. The road trip story, interspersed with science fiction set pieces and hand-held computer devices, will make you question your own relationship with machines. How do we use technology, how do machines cripple us? Jessica Barness, design scholar and scholarly designer, talks about how Until the End of the World impacted her, and why the movie serves as a prescient warning to us all.-Jessica Barness is a design scholar and a scholarly designer. Today, we have planned something extraordinary for you. We finished the last season with a little riddle and asked our audience to guess who was the Special Legal Design Santa in our season finale. We received some answers, thank you for those, and the promised prize was drawn. Our lucky winner is Elif Yildirim, a lawyer and legal design student from Turkey and we invited Elif to plan and co-host an episode with us and what an episode it turned out to be!  Alice Rawsthorn, a British Design Critic and author joined us to discuss about design as an attitude and how it can be incorporated into law. Alice talks about why great design is a human right and explains how we understand design and its potential in different fields of life and what is the level of importance to incorporate design into our responses in times of crisis, such as in the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. We also talk about how design, or design thinking, has increasingly gained popularity in different fields of professions, and law is just one of the examples. Alice explains if there are some “red flags” in this development. -- Alice Rawsthorn is an award-winning design critic and author, whose books include Design as an Attitude, Hello World: Where Design Meets Life and, most recently, Design Emergency: Building a Better Future, co-written with Paola Antonelli, senior curator of design at MoMA, New York. Alice's weekly design column for The New York Times was syndicated worldwide for over a decade. In all her work, Alice champions design's potential as a social, political and ecological tool that can help to foster positive change. Born in Manchester and based in London, she is a founding member of the Writers for Liberty campaign for human rights and of the advisory board of the Democracy Next research and action institute as well as a member of the UK government's Honors Committee for arts and Media. Alice and Paola are co-founders of Design Emergency, a podcast andmin research platform that investigates design's role in forging a fairer future. Ayşe Elif Yıldırım is a lawyer and academic and most recently a Visual Communication Design student. After traveling and living in many countries of Europe, she is now based in Ankara, Turkey. She has several academic degrees in different fields of law, most recently she was granted her Ph.D. degree with distinction for her doctoral research conducted under the scholarship of Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in the field of Business and Human Rights. Always being interested in interdisciplinary fields of work that combine two distinct ways of thinking, Elif is now focusing on Legal Design and how we can use it to solve complex challenges we are facing in our contemporary world.

Travelling the world participating in internships and workshops is the cornerstone of Sofia Villamarin's glass experience. Her unique personal works in stained glass utilize three-dimensionality, fragmented imagery and her stunning painting abilities to express stories and reflections of self as well as her unique perspective on life. Of Argentinian and Italian nationality, Villamarin was born in 1979 and lived in Argentina until she was 28 years old. In 2003, she graduated with a degree in Visual Communication Design, but the following year began her education in stained glass art. Awarded a scholarship to study glass painting, in 2008 Villamarin travelled to the studio of Italian artist Sante Pizzol in Milan, Italy. She also attended Vetroricerca Glas & Modern in Bolzano, Italy, garnering a more comprehensive education in glass.  Villamarin established and ran her own studio in Argentina from 2011 to 2015. The following year she went to work for The Cathedral Studios, the stained glass studio at Canterbury Cathedral, UK, followed by a stint at Barley Studio in York. Currently living in Munich, Germany, and working for Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt” GmbH, Villamarin focuses on portraiture painting on stained glass windows. With a unique and international perspective on stained glass, Villamarin has been recognized by The Corning Museum of Glass, Corning New York, in its publication of cutting-edge glass, New Glass Review 33. She is also the recipient of last year's Coburg Prize for Contemporary Glass for her work My Fragments, accompanied by an exhibition at Veste Coburg and at the European Museum of Modern Glass, Rödental, Germany. Focusing on new trends in glass art, the works of 90 international artists were on display at these venues in 2022. The highly topical objects and variety of production techniques made this show a fascinating event in the International Year of Glass.  A 2016 recipient of the Stevens Glass Artist of the Year award, Villamarin was honored, along with other students and emerging architectural glass artists, at a ceremony at Glaziers' Hall. From a record number of high-quality entries from the UK and other international entrants, Villamarin was presented with the opportunity to design a window commemorating the lost crew of the iconic Titanic for St Mary's Church, Southampton.  With uniquely personal works such as her painted self-portraits Time Without Time I and II; Resilience – made with glass, enamels and rope; or the many works that break free of the single flat plane of stained glass as seen in Free, Villamarin has left her mark on the world of modern stained glass. Having participated in the American Congress' Women in Glass conference, the artist lends her voice to the independent work she designs and fabricates as well as to the work she paints for Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt” GmbH.

Penina earned an MFA in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University and a BA in Art from Goshen College. As a component of her MFA thesis, she developed a secondary-level design curriculum that was inspired by the paucity of design education in Uganda. This subsequently inspired the creation of DesignEd Uganda workshops that Acayo Laker organizes and facilitates over the summer to equip young people with skills in design and creative problem-solving. Penina is also the faculty advisor for a new minor in Creative Practice for Social Change that exposes students to processes designers, artists and architects use to address systemic economic, environmental and social challenges. Alex is a self-described movie buff and a 2011 White Swan High School graduate.  He graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2016 with a Bachelors Degree in Visual Communication Design with an emphasis on print design and web design.  He is currently the program director for the First Nations MESA Program at Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington.  Up First Nations MESA engages high school, middle school and elementary schools in the Yakima Valley in math and science-based activities to prepare underrepresented students for STEM based careers.  This episode was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing guidelines were maintained as all participants joined from the safe confines of their homes, offices, classrooms, or cars via Zoom. We apologize ahead of time for any audio irregularities caused by bandwidth limitations.  A big shout out goes to Cesar Hernandez, DeeDee Gasseling, and Hayley storm for making this interview happen.  We do want to let you know this episode does contain a singular reference of a word used as a term of abuse and disparagement towards members of the LGBTQ+ community that may be disturbing or triggering to some. Although we do not condone the use of these terms, we felt it was appropriate in the context of this discussion.  If this is your first time listening to the podcast, welcome to the show and if you're a returning listener thanks for coming back. So, pull up a chair and see what happens when you give a principal a podcast.
