UN Sustainable Development Goal Number 12 - Responsible Production and Consumption  Episode 4 of 'The 17' podcast focuses on UN Sustainable Development Goal 12. It explores how our way of living - especially in the Western world - puts a massive and unsustainable strain on the planet's natural resources. It also discusses what changes in production and consumption (at all levels from individual to global) can pivot us toward progress. The task is huge. According to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the current state of affairs looks like this:Unsustainable production and consumption are the root causes of 3 global crises - climate change, biodiversity loss and pollutionOur reliance on natural resources is increasing - up 65% from 2000 to 2019There are problems in multiple industries. For example, 17% of the world's food is wasted. Safe recycling of electronic waste can be as low as 1.2% in some parts of the world.Goal 12 raises an important question: Is it possible to produce and consume responsibly when the majority of the world's companies are designed to prioritise profit? If making people want and consume more is profitable, how can we move toward sustainability?  Experts with retail experience and fashion industry insights Andrew Ostcliffe is Head of E-commerce & Retail Innovation for Oxfam and has shaped their strategy aimed at reducing waste by being a conduit for both re-use and recycling. He argues for more innovative uses of materials that are beyond re-use (such as Oxfam inventing a new way to turn waste textiles into a new hard material than be used in shop-fitting, displays and sign-making). But Andrew's main appeal is to us consumers and how we need to rediscover the art of patience:“Do you really need your new purchase tomorrow morning? Could you wait a little longer? If you can, you help the climate by affecting transportation logistics… and perhaps you start to fight that "quicker, bigger, faster, more” mindset that fuels over-consumption.” - Andrew Ostcliffe, Oxfam Addressing the goal directlyEach episode of 'The 17' ends with our influential expert guests suggesting practical actions at individual, regional, national and global levels to help move the planet toward meeting the UN Sustainable Development goal in question.Josie Warden, who explores regeneration for business consultancy Volans, thinks that individually we should start to embrace buying pre-loved clothes as a way of expressing our unique identity. Choosing unique second-hand items displays our taste in a more effective way than buying fast fashion. She also proposes that at a global level we take the opportunity to regulate high consumption industries. She makes the point that if the onus is on companies to change themselves it's hard to be the first-mover and be at a competitive disadvantage. Yorkshire's ambition to lead on SustainabilityBoth Andrew and Josie point out that Yorkshire's textile heritage can help make the region a leader in making the fashion industry more sustainable. There is expertise and legacy skills that can be harnessed, plus local distinctive sustainable production that can be encouraged and promoted more. This episode of 'The 17' was recorded at the first ever Yorkshire Sustainability Week which took place earlier in July 2023..  In this enlightening episode, we are honored to welcome John Elkington, a world-renowned pioneer in sustainability, corporate responsibility, and innovation. Known for his concept of the Triple Bottom Line, Elkington gives us a deep dive into the past, present, and future of sustainable business.  From the roots of sustainability in the 70s to today's greenwashing issues, Elkington provides a unique insight into the journey of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. He stresses the importance of transparency and integrating sustainability into business strategy. He also candidly discusses the challenges of greenwashing, the balance between green consumerism and business responses, and the necessity for regulating bodies like the European Commission to take action. He discusses the concept of green swans and the importance of the B Corp movement, as founder of Volans the first UK's B Corp.   In a vivid recounting of the historical evolution of the sustainability field, Elkington reflects on the past 50 years and offers an insightful vision for the future. He highlights the critical need for large-scale funding to tackle societal and environmental challenges, cautioning against the potential pitfalls of the financial sector driving sustainability. Yet, he passionately communicates the immense opportunities that lie ahead, encouraging us all to courageously embrace the disruptions and innovations required for a sustainable future

This week's Wonderspace Podcast comes from the inaugural Anthropy gathering at the Eden project where last week 1,200 people from all sectors of society gathered to be part of a launchpad for national change, a summit for the future of Britain. It was great to spend time with previous Wonderspace contributors such as John Elkington and the Volans team, Charlotte Sewell and Matt Hocking who were on the Boardroom 2030 episode, Cathy Runciman from Earth Percent, Amy Clarke from Tribe Capital and Guy, Will and Ben from the Blue Earth Summit. As part of each Wonderspace episode we ask leaders to lay down their own ideas and brands and to share stories of hopefulness that are not their own. It's a powerful expression of interdependence and an opportunity to make a name for someone else. At Anthropy I approached people with the question, what is your story of hopefulness that is not your own about a person, business or non profit who are doing amazing things for the world? Here are 35 quick fire responses and a link to share your own story of hopefulness and make a name for someone else. https://anthropy.live To view the episode page with a summary of the interview, links to social media and projects mentioned, go to https://ourwonder.space/episodes/_90

Then, Zeyad of Palestinian Youth Movement speaks to us on May 15th, Nakba Day, where nearly 10,000 people, families, children, and allies took to the streets that day in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and against the on-going Israeli settler-colonialism and violence. As Palestinians of the diaspora had been preparing to commemorate the 73rd year of the Palestinian catastrophe, Al Nakba, Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah began to experience an increase of violent dispossession. This episode also features voices from the protests held in front of the Israhelli Consulate in Yelamu Ohlone Land – San Francisco – May 18th, as Palestinians and allies participated in a general strike and day of action from Jerusalem, across colonized Palestine, and the world. Organizers of the Palestinian Youth Movement and Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) share history about successful strikes & boycotts in solidarity with Palestine and leave us with a call to action: Block The Boat.Learn more: https://blocktheboat.org/As of now, that boat has been delayed for over a week and is currently treading the waters outside the San Francisco bay.5/27/2021 update: "We've delayed ZIM - Our readiness to mobilize to the Port of Oakland is working! The Israeli ZIM-operated "Volans" ship was scheduled to dock this morning, but hasn't done so in fear of facing our protest. For every hour its cargo isn't unloaded, the Apartheid state of Israel loses enormous amounts money. Mark Desjardine is a researcher at Penn State University specialized in hedge fund activism. So, was Danone the story of the limits to sustainability?Or is this the opening shot in a new chapter for sustainable business? One that moves beyond the myth of the Sustainability Superhero CEO who acts very much alone to drive the transition, to sell it to the media, and to defend that vision against enemy attacks, both from within and from without.I love this interview because Louise and Mark basically interview eachother, putting together the latest research findings on hedge fund activism, and the signals from companies that are breaking new ground in sustainable business. Join in on the conversation around regenerative capitalism and if/how capitalism can be made regenerative by tweeting @volansjohn and @nori, and you will automatically be entered to win copy of John Elkington’s latest book, Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism!   Most of us are familiar with Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s concept of a black swan: an unforeseen, adverse event with off-the-scale impact. But what if we were to flip this concept on its head? In his new book, John Elkington envisions a world where capitalism transforms to serve people and planet, where the black swan problems currently leading us to exponential breakdown are mitigated by green swan solutions taking us exponentially toward breakthrough.   John is an internationally recognized authority on corporate responsibility and sustainable development, bestselling author, and serial entrepreneur. He currently serves as Chief Pollinator at Volans, a future-focused business working at the intersection of the sustainability, entrepreneurship, and innovation movements. Today, John joins Ross and Paul to discuss his most recent book, Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism, and explain how a green swan differs from a black swan event in its potential for an exponentially positive impact.   John goes on to discuss the idea of regenerative capitalism, explaining why he doesn’t trust incumbents to lead the movement, how we can approach new ventures with a regenerative mindset, and why he suggests transforming the current system rather than scrapping capitalism altogether. Listen in for John’s insight around the unintended consequences of implementing new technologies, and find out what green swans might arise out of the COVID-19 pandemic.   Key Takeaways   [2:52] What John is trying to communicate through Green Swans Black swan = unexpected event, exponential negative impact Raise question re: exponentially positive trajectories   [5:52] How John defines a gray swan and a white swan Gray swans have massive negative impact but were foreseen White swan = template for anything with exponential impact    [8:27] John’s concept of regenerative capitalism Social movements must engage with markets + business Reprogram key parts of system to build resilience   [11:17] The potential for oil and gas to lead the movement Fundamental distrust of incumbents in old economic orders Reptilian instincts, try to undermine opposition   [13:49] Why we shouldn’t just get rid of capitalism Market activity gone on for thousands of years Reform with government, regulatory involvement   [15:57] How to start new ventures with a regenerative mindset Leverage approach of B Corp movement Requires transformation of financial market   [22:19] How a regenerative focus might heal the political divide Potential for transfer of wealth from urban to rural Still dispossessed by tech (automotive, dairy industries)   [25:57] Nori’s potential role in establishing regenerative capitalism Evolving ecosystem of likeminded companies Operate as standard setter of what is regenerative   [30:08] What we need to know about Thomas Midgley  Chemist/engineer with patents for leaded gasoline, freons Single organism who did most damage to planet   [33:26] How to cultivate leaders who put the community’s needs first Reach out to people don’t understand, make uncomfortable Develop ability to listen for weak signals of change   [36:25] What green swans may arise out of COVID-19 Commitment to air quality, places to walk and cycle Universal basic income (has own unintended consequences)   Connect with Ross & Paul    Nori Nori on Facebook  Nori on Twitter Nori on Medium Nori on YouTube Nori on GitHub Nori on Patreon Nori Newsletter Email podcast@nori.com  Nori White Paper Subscribe on iTunes Carbon Removal Newsroom   Resources   John’s Website John on Twitter Volans John Elkington on RCC EP028 Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism by John Elkington The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb Books by John Elkington People of the State of New York v. This episode is a bit different from our usual format: I recently held a webinar called “The Evolving Power of ESG: Generating Returns and Communicating with Clients”, where we discussed some key areas of interest to fund managers and investors, given the growing momentum, latest trends and key developments in the industry. I was joint in conversation by Esa Saloranta, Head of ESG and Sustainable Technology at eQ Plc. The webinar is part of a series in the build up to the ESG Investment Europe Event on 27-28 May in London.  Make sure you join us at the event if you can make it. This is another initiative we have taken at ILA & Partners in partnership with Reuters Events by Thomson Reuters, to continue with our efforts to promote and scale Sustainable & Impact Investing.  We hope you enjoy it ! Introduction Despite progress in creating industry standards and frameworks to help clarify ESG data, individual methodologies for the incorporation within investment decision-making remains ambiguous. This issue is heightened by the evolving demands of increasingly active stakeholders. Communicating ESG to clients in unambiguous and relevant terms has become a priority for leading asset managers. Listen to this episode to gain an expert understanding of the biggest challenges and best practices in Sustainable & Impact Investing, including:  Setting the Scene & Sharing Preferred Strategies: How variance in defining ‘ESG’ leads to confusion and conflict between investment firms & investors, policymakers, clients and key stakeholders Internal Processes and Policies: How to integrate ESG into an investment company and gain an understanding of the common challenges and obstacles Improving Return Profile Through Building ESG into Your Models: How to integrate ESG factors into your models and decision process, across all portfolios and discuss what has worked best thus far, and where improvements can be made Data Sets as Part of the Investment Process: Understand which services and information are most useful and learn where to source and develop key information both externally and internally Communicating with Clients: How is ESG affecting the communication with your clients and the latest information clients are currently requesting Call to Action: What should investment firms/managers and clients do differently and the practical steps you can implement today to improve your ESG data analysis and communication Some quotes and highlights “The sustainable revolution is gaining momentum and it now represents the single greatest investment opportunity in all of history.” Al Gore, Generation IM “I believe we are on the edge of a significant capital reallocation of capital… And investors will need to fundamentally reassess portfolios because of sustainability issues.” Larry Fink, Chairman and CEO of Blackrock “The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and above all, the durability of that advantage.” - Warren Buffet “Every CEO needs to sit down and come to grips with the fact that if I don’t have teachers to teach the children of my employees, then the best employees aren’t going to come work for our company.” - Chuck Robbin, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Calls To Action:         1. As an equity fund manager, take a long terms perspective, choose the best companies in the world to go along even in this crisis.          2. Make demand use our influence as guardians of assets to ask where are the mitigations to existential threats that is surely coming down the line.           3. How are we using resources and having a net positive impact and to give back to the planet and people, more than which we are using.            4. Ask what are we doing with our investments and capital allocation, how are we getting the most of our resources long term than we are taking in the short term.              5. This is the most exciting opportunity we have ever been gifted to solve the world’s most challenging problem in a way that we can, and we get to be a part of it by funding these solutions. We can learn a lot if we listen to the trees—and pay attention to the party going on underneath! Nature has much to say about how to realign our industrial value chains, embrace biodiversity, and maintain soil microbiology. The question is, are we smart enough to listen and move toward a regenerative economy?  Lorraine Smith is a writer and independent consultant who advocates for the shift to a regenerative economy. Lorraine has consulted for leading change-agents and large companies since 2004, and she is a sought-after speaker in the realm of sustainability and corporate innovation. Lorraine collaborates regularly with John Elkington’s team at Volans and sits on the Sustainability Advisory Board of Fibria, a large Brazilian forest products company. She also serves on the Board of Canadian Business for Social Responsibility and the Review Council of the Future Fit Business Benchmark. Lorraine is currently working on her first book, a series of essays exploring the relationship between people and trees. Today, Lorraine joins Ross, Christophe and Paul to share her ‘silver lining’ approach to environmentalism, explaining how a shift in the conversation can lead to true progress. She discusses her work with corporate boards, describing the value of understanding a company’s current circumstances and humbly checking your assumptions at the door. Lorraine offers insight around accelerating the rate of change and helping business think beyond emissions reduction to elevate the use of products that use CO2 as feedstock. "We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down." —Kurt Vonnegut John Elkington is most comfortable when he is least comfortable, most engaged when he is making it up as he goes along. A pioneer in working with businesses toward sustainable development, John has been a proponent of the triple bottom line for 40-plus years, making both his corporate clients and other environmentalists uncomfortable and earning a reputation as the ‘grit in the corporate oyster.’ So, how does John use provocation to push people in the right direction—combining a responsibility to people, planet, and profit to champion systemic change?  John currently serves as Founding Partner and Chief Pollinator at Volans, a future-focused consulting agency based in London. Volans works with global companies, government actors, and innovators, moving beyond incremental change to address large-scale systemic challenges. Prior to his work with Volans, John co-founded SustainAbility and Environmental Data Services. John is a thought-leader, business strategist, environmentalist, and author, having penned several books on sustainability, entrepreneurship, and innovation. They discuss social entrepreneurship, the term ‘sustainability,’ and Nori’s role in challenging the current system.
