In Episode 55, I introduce Guerrillapreneur Academy. Guerrillapreneur Academy episodes are shows where I provide tips and techniques that Guerrillapreneurs should consider to build their businesses. In this episode, I provide 5 steps Guerrillapreneurs should take during a crisis. As of June, 2020, the world was still dealing with the impact of COVID-19. Startups and small businesses have suffered from lack of demand while others have thrived due to a shift in consumer habits. Prior to January, 2020, grocery home delivery was not gaining traction. Shelter-in-place orders changed that. Before you adjust your business, I want you to consider the five steps outlined in this episode. Like what you hear on the Guerrillapreneur Podcast? After filming the dramatic bridge scene, Winfrey wanted to share a meal with the cast. Oprah called on Mark's Mart to cater the dinner --and even though Mark's Mart is not in the catering business, King and his staff delivered a service and dinning experience fit for a billionaire. Elements of effective rogue leadership include:1) Bringing play back into business to release stress, create bonds, and inspire creativity and innovation. 20 Using a laser-sharp focus on right action to amplify organizational values.3) Embracing "partner leadership" that benefits both frontline workers and bottom-line profits.4) Employing "stealth change management" to avoid burn out and to create sustained change. 5) Learning the art of "organizational triage" maximizes resources and avoids wasted energy, time, and creativity. Rather than letting this news as well as her painful past dissuade her from following her dreams, Nancy chose to persevere and is now a guide to those who also want to overcome their obstacles.Because of retinitis pigmentosa, Nancy mastered the "Business Pivot." She started her career in broadcasting. As she lost her ability to read the prompter, she had to pivot into a career as a professional singer. Philip Williams is a 3-time Inc. 5000 honoree after becoming the CEO of a 17-year-old cash strapped company and growing it at 50% per year for 5 straight years. That resulted in two nearly simultaneous acquisition offers from two publicly traded multi-national corporations. He accomplished it all by bootstrapping the business. In this episode, we discuss how to create a performance drive culture. Despite what many experts argue, Williams contends that creating sustainable growth starts first with "crowdsourcing" ideas from your team. By doing so, Williams argues that employees have control and ownership of the intended outcomes. Additionally, when you empower employees to contribute to the growth of the company, you are free to focus on bigger problems. Williams argues that one of the biggest problems for #startups and #smallbusinesses is that they do not know how to use the Return on Investment metric in their business thinking. Williams spotlights several organizations that failed to implement this type of a framework and paid the price, including #Sears and #WellsFargo. 3.5 million Americans are permanent wheelchair users, and only about 3 percent of them own their own accessible transportation. Birmingham, Alabama-based startup, MoovMo, is disrupting the marketing and launching the first ride sharing service specifically designed for people requiring wheelchair accessible vehicles. The Birmingham, Alabama-based ridesharing service was launched by Darrell Harris. MoovMo won the 2018 Alabama Launchpad concept track which comes with a $50,000 prize. The business model includes upfront and affordable fares, 24/7 service, vetted and trained drivers, and regularly inspected vehicles, as well as on-demand, dedicated and scheduled rides. In my interview with Ms. Cyrondys Jackson, we discuss MoovMo's strategy and roll-out plans in Birmingham, Alabama. MoovMo's path to success is more difficult than #Uber's and #Lyft's path because in addition to certifying and training drivers, they also have to make sure that the vehicles that these individuals drive have functioning chair lifts to load their customers. MoovMo has developed partnerships with transit authorities as a way to solidifying demand and giving wheelchair bound travelers more travel flexibility. Two of the best interviews at the conference were with #Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Cruise Founder Kyle Vogt. In the interview with Khosrowshahi, he explains why Uber is investing heavily in Scooters stating that it is part of "building a [transportation] platform." Khosrowshahi also explains that Uber will not longer just be a ride sharing company, but a business that will manage "point-to-point" transportation, which could include scooters, trains, cars and many more forms of transportation. Self-driving cars are the future and Cruise has relaunched its strategy to dominate this space. Vogt explains why Cruise had to drop its retrofit strategy to focus on the future of self-driving cars. Vogt also gives Elon Musk a back-slap by saying that too many executives in Silicon Valley were to arrogant to seek and accept help. Vogt explained that his partnership with General Motors is the perfect partnership for a startup in this space. In episode 33, I teach startup how to fight like a Guerrillapreneur. Episode 35 is a Mastermind Interview show. In this episode, I interview Dr. Mohammad Rahman, associate professor of management at #Purdue University's #Krannert School of management. Dr. Rahman is an expert in various topics relating to big data, digital retailing, sharing economy, and consumer behavior and decision-making. On July 26, 2017, #Airbnb and the #NAACP announced a partnership to encourage more African Americans to join the platform and spread the economic benefits of home sharing to more communities (https://www.naacp.org/latest/naacp-airbnb-partner-promote-travel-offer-new-economic-opportunities-communities-color/). The hope was that this partnership would generate the type of "spillover effects" at restaurants and other service providers (e.g., cleaners, coffee shops, etc.) witnessed by small businesses in predominantly white neighborhoods. Dr. Rahman's research indicated that though well intentioned, the NAACP and Airbnb partnership will not deliver those benefits.Dr. Rahman's research delves into measuring and quantifying the impact of the internet and related innovations on various industries and markets, how the local market structure plays a role in digital transformation, the economic value of digital footprints driving consumer behavior and improving decision-making, and the impact of information technology on a firm's business and operational practices.Professor Rahman published a white paper entitled "Shared Prosperity (or Lack Thereof) in the Sharing Economy," you examine the spillover effects of Airbnb on the growth of complimentary local services like restaurants and bars. In this episode we discuss these spillover effects and whether they are applicable in all communities regardless of demographics. Are you a musician? Episode 34 is a Guerrillapreneur News show where we bring you news, views and predictions about the #Gig and #sharingeconomies that are expected to grow to $335B by 2025.I was in San Francisco last week at the #TechCrunchDisrupt Conference and met with dozens of fascinating #sharingeconomy, #robotics and #artificialintelligence startups. I attended lectures and panel discussions that featured executives from Uber (including Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi), Google, and Apple. These executives provided their perspective on the future the global economy. I can't wait share audio from interviews I conducted with startups that I believe are going to disrupt the markets where they play. Subscribe to the Guerrillapreneur Podcast and its sister podcast Gigging: Everything and Sharing Economy to make sure you catch all these interview. In this episode, I focused on Guerrillapreneur News that was made at the TechCrunch Disrupt Conference. First, I discuss whether Robot should pay taxes. #BillGates first recommended that as robots displace human workers, the owners of these robots should pay taxes to help ensure that income inequality does not destabilize the world's social fabric. Gates points to the fact that the US tax code favors the investments in "capital assets" over investments in human capital (labor). Second, we review Fit Small Business' (#fitsmallbusiness) Top Ten Gig Employer list and ask the question why Uber and Airbnb are left off the list. The net result is that I plan to launch the first annual Guerrillapreneur Top Ten Sharing Economy Employer List. If you want to help me develop the criteria for ranking these companies, please reach out to me on Twitter @guerillapreneur. Third, I get on my soapbox and decry the stupidity of new NYC legislation that limits the number of Uber and Lyft cars that can operate in the City. NYC's City Council also passed legislation that requires Airbnb to turn over all its host information to the City. Experts believe this registration requirement is the first step to new fee and license requirements that would make it difficult for Airbnb hosts to operate in the City. Fourth, I introduce you to two new sharing economy startups, #Momni and #Vygo. #Momni matches Moms who want to offer childcare services with Moms who need childcare services. #Vygo matches top students (tutors) with students who need help with their coursework. Finally, I give #JetSmarter a pat on the back because they stopped being dumb. Last year, JetSmarter eliminated its $5K membership fees and its $3K initiation fees. As soon as they eliminated these fees, demand for their service tripled! The world of the sharing economy is evolving and in some cases the push back from the Empire is very disturbing. Welcome to Episode 33 and it is a GIANT SLAYING Episode! In this episode, we teach you how to fight like a Guerrillapreneur. Guerrilla warriors DO NOT fight protracted ground battles. Guerrilla warriors are tactical fighters who adapt their strategies to the operating environment. In my book, Guerrillapreneur: Small Business Strategy for Davids Wanting to Defeat Goliaths (http://a.co/d/4ArTxDT), I have a tactical market fight framework that is called the 4-Ds of Guerrillapreneur Market-fighting. The 2X2 framework places Market Growth Rate (High and Low) on the Y-axis and Barriers to Entry (High and Low) on the X-axis creating four quadrants Use this link to see the Framework, https://twitter.com/Guerillapreneur/status/1032708630364254208 These four quadrants define specific tactics that Guerrillapreneurs should consider if they have launched startups in market segments that fall into the relevant quadrant. DOCILE – Win Through PartnershipsDECEIVE – Win by being a flexible fast followerDOMINATE – Blitzkrieg using Slingshot TechnologyDISRUPT – Use Slingshot Technology to "Hit and Run" In the episode, I provide mini-business cases to support my framework. If you are a corporate manager, these tactics may seem counter intuitive, but that's why Guerrilla warriors win. We execute tactics that corporate managers do not expect. Are you a musician? Episode 32 is a Mastermind Interview show. In this episode, I interview Michael Campbell, the founder, president and CEO of the Atlanta-based Black on Purpose TV (BOPTV), the largest Black owned Streaming Television Network in the world with approximately 1.5M daily viewers worldwide. BOPTV has over 8,000 pieces of content across 24 channels Mr. Campbell is also a voting member of the recording academy (The Grammy's) and the CEO of a record label with a state of the art recording studio. In the interview, Mr. Campbell and I discuss his motivations for launching a network dedicated to providing all Black content for people of color around the globe. Mr. Campbell makes the case for digital network sighting a recent Nielson study that shows that Black Millennials and Black women consume more digital content than any other ethnic group. Moreover, Black Millennials and Black Women purchase goods and services they see on TV at a higher rate than any other ethnic group. Campbell believes that an all Black network can tap into these trends and bring superior value to black entrepreneurs who want to target an audience made up of primarily people of color. Mr. Campbell has built BOPTV as a platform to give small providers an opportunity to monetize their content. In Mr. Campbell's words," [Small content providers] can wait to get a seat at the table in Hollywood or we can build our table." BOPTV is the ultimate #sharingeconomy business. BOPTV is leveraging the digital backbones of Roku, AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, XBOX, GoogleTV and SamsungTV to reach the growing number of Black Millennials who have cut the cord and are accessing content through digital platforms. Episode 31 is a Guerrillapreneur News show where we bring you news, views and predictions about the Gig and #sharingeconomies that are expected to grow to $335B by 2025. We discuss seven items in Guerrillapreneur News First, a recent study shows that Airbnb guests who stay in minority communities do not spend as much as they spend when they stay in majority white communities. According to the study by Purdue Professor Mohammad Rohman and Phd Student Mohammad Alyakoob, in predominantly white communities for every 2% increase in Airbnb activity, there was a 4% increase in local employment in the region. Rohman and Alyakoob found that this correlation did not occur in communities where minorities made up 50% of the population. Second, I give you the Top Ten cities where you can earn money in the Gig Economy. Third, Isn't it time for the Uber of Airplane Flight. Uk-based Wingly is trying to become the Uber of the Airways for the leisure travel segment. Fourth, Bike-sharing in mainland China is imploding. In 2017, there were over 100 bike-sharing startups. Today, two players, Ofo and Mobike, control 90% of the bike-sharing market in China. Despite their dominance, #Mobike and #Ofo are not making money. Instead, their investors, #Alibaba and #Tencent, look at bike-sharing as a lost-liter that can help drive customers to their other digital services, i.e., payments and online ads. Fifth, public libraries are entering the co-working space and are helping micro-businesses get off the ground. Sixth, I discuss how Fair Care Labs is helping to create portable benefits that could accelerate the growth of the Gig Economy. Finally, I discuss how payment issues might cripple the growth of the Gig Economy. Gig workers not only want their money, they want status updates on when the money has been deposited and immediate notices when payment statuses change. Are you an artist/singer/songwriter? We made it to Episode 30 and it is a GIANT SLAYING Episode! In this episode, we channel Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company and we ask the question, "What would Henry Ford Do If He Ran Your Company?" Henry Ford used the wood leftover from the manufacturing of the Model-T to launch the Kingsford charcoal company. The profits from Kingsford were used to increase the monthly salary of the men on the Model-T assembly line. If every company turned its waste into a revenue stream, what would our planet look like? As a futurist, I take a stab at describing how the world would look if Henry Ford ran Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Office Depot or Ted's Montana Grill. Zero-Waste does not mean Zero Profits. Are you a musician? Do you want to advertise on the Guerrillapreneur podcast? Facebook announced that it was adding a "Marketplace" tab to its platform that will allow users to connect with service providers like #Handy, #HomeAdvisor, and #Porch. #Amazon is launching a pilot in Seattle with a cleaning company and #Walmart is also partnering with Handy on furniture delivery and installation. We also discuss how a new startup, #WhyHotel, is impacting the real estate market. WhyHotel creates "#Pop-Up" hotels in newly developed apartment buildings that have not leased all of its units. WhyHotel provide luxury amenities and high-tech features including Amazon Echos in each room instead of telephones. We also discuss a new startup in the real estate space called Loftium. Loftium will contribute to your mortgage down payment if you agree to allow them to collect Airbnb income off your property for three years. This innovative solution is helping Millennials own homes. Airbnb is jumping into this space as well by offering existing home owners the opportunity to re-finance with it's banking partners, Quicken Loans, Citizens Bank and Better Mortgage. Airbnb essentially offers a letter of credit for those home owners to generate Airbnb income from their residence. Are you an artist/singer/songwritter? In Episode 21 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur News, news about the sharing, gig and circular loop economies that is expected to grow to $335B by 2025.First, we discuss Amazon's acquit ion of Ring Doorbell. In the podcast, we speculate that the acquisition will enable Amazon to leverage the facial and identity recognition capabilities built into it's ReKognition Amazon Web Services. I also discuss how Amazon will be able to use this technology to enable its partner's to securely access your house. Second, I discuss the 2014 decision made by the Chinese government to develop a system of social credit or a tracking system to rate the reputations of individuals, businesses and government officials.  This system is very similiar to "social credits" issued in the Black Mirror Season Three, Episode 1 show called "NoseDive" where the characters are rated on every social transaction, including how they treat coffee shop baristas. In the Black Mirror episode, the Social Credit system determines where you live, the interest rate of your loans, where you work and ultimately who you can be friends with. Based on where China is in the development of its Social Credit system, I believe that we are not too far away from having an "all seeing digital eye" that will follow, track and score our every move. How will this kill God? Prior to the digital "all seeing eye," we created analog versions of the social credit system -- Santa Claus and God. Santa and God keep track of our actions and rate us as being naughty or nice. In the end, Santa determines whether we get gifts for Christmas and God holds ALL the keys to heaven. However, if the Chinese version of "Social Credits" begin to serve the same purpose, why do we need God or Santa?  Third, I ask the question, "Did the 70's TV comedy Three's Company Foreshadow the future Housing Market? I ask that questions because the Gig Economy has created jobs that no longer make it easy for young workers to buy real estate. In the comedy, Three's Company, followed the lives of three young adults who lived together in a Santa Monica, CA apartment. In 2016, I predicted that the future of real estate will consist of fractional ownership of property by platonic strangers (Gig Workers) who want to build equity. Fourth, I predict that fast-food restaurant kitchens will eventually disappear as cloud-kitchens emerge as the efficient Gig model for the future. Finally, I provide a list of the top paying Gig jobs available today for contract workers.
