The Resilient Recruiter
Why Community-Building is the Ultimate Differentiator in Recruitment, with Leo Hewett, Ep #250

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2025 69:31

Imagine building a recruitment firm where every placement creates an actual positive impact. That's exactly what Leo Hewett did with Core3 — and this is how he made it happen.   After over a decade of experience working for large corporates up to Director level, Leo decided to take the plunge and launch his own ethical recruitment business, Core3 -specialising in Finance & Accounting talent.    Alongside their B Corp certification, Core3 are proud to have won multiple awards since launching in 2022, including REC's 'Start up of the year' (2023), and Business Leader's 'Business of the Year' (2024).   Episode Outline and Highlights [03:23] The story on how Leo's mom inspired him to give back to the community through recruitment. [08:43] What inspired Leo to launch Core3? [15:30] A purpose-driven recruitment firm: how Leo set up their organization differently. [28:33] How making a difference can easily attract talents. [30:39] Highlights and challenges in Core3's growth journey. [34:59] Strategies on reactivating past clients. [37:15] ROI from building a personal brand on LinkedIn. [40:41] The practicality of following through with a voice note after a LinkedIn connection or engagement. [43:10] Developing an inner-circle community to add value. [51:50] Bringing in experienced hires in your team. [57:15] Overcoming two setbacks when scaling: Culture & Cashflow. [1:05:31] Most meaningful metrics Leo and his team focus on.   Building a Purpose-Driven Recruitment Firm   Leo reached director level at Robert Half and was detached from billing for years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led his team on hands-on recruitment and rediscovered that he still enjoys doing it. With an unexpected inheritance, he built a financial buffer which helped him establish Core3. He established his business in a way that is very much different from most recruiting firms: by being B-Corp Certified!   B-Corp certification acts as a "fair trade" equivalent for businesses, signaling that Core3 is committed to high ethical standards and strong ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) credentials. Core3's decision to pursue B-Corp certification was driven by a desire to embed impact into the business model and stay accountable to ethical standards. The certification also enhanced its attractiveness to stakeholders who value purpose-driven businesses.   “The values are more than words written on a wall and people love the culture and work I'm working here. But it's, it's different because you can feel it every single day. Because we've given 3% of revenue to these three good causes that we support. Every consultant feels it with every placement. The client, after every placement, gets a menu of which charity they would like to choose where that 3% of this placement will go,” explained Leo.   Another way that Core3 engages with its community is by building inner-circle groups.   Adding Value Through Inner-Circle Groups Leo and his team have strategically built value-driven communities to foster meaningful conversations among finance professionals. The approach began with the Conscious Finance podcast, which explored finance's role in meaningful change. As the podcast gained traction, clients expressed interest in deeper discussions, leading to the creation of roundtable events. These roundtables bring like-minded professionals together to discuss shared challenges in an open, collaborative environment. There are challenges in hosting events for these inner circles, such as resource, time, and event costs. However, Leo shared the benefits in adding value to your niche community by developing these inner circles:   Stronger Client Relationships – Moves Core3 beyond transactional interactions, making them a trusted partner rather than just another recruiter. Enhanced Brand Authority – Hosting and facilitating discussions positions Core3 as thought leaders within the industry. Exclusive Networking Opportunities – Clients benefit from valuable peer discussions and insights, making them more likely to stay engaged with Core3. Self-Sustaining Communities – With ongoing engagement via messaging platforms, these groups create lasting professional connections beyond Core3's direct involvement. Business Growth & Differentiation – Unlike traditional recruiters focused solely on job placements, Core3 creates a deeper, more meaningful engagement model that attracts both talent and businesses.   By fostering these high-value, non-sales-driven communities, Core3 successfully differentiates itself from competitors and creates lasting relationships with finance professionals.   The Challenges of Scaling Your Business Another topic that I can relate to is how Leo dealt with two main challenges when scaling his business. He shared the two main areas where he struggled: culture and cash flow.   For culture, defining and embedding a strong culture was difficult in the early stages. Lack of clear values and behavioral expectations made it hard to create a positive and cohesive environment. To overcome it, Leo did the following:   Setting Clear Standards from the Start Involving the Team in Defining Culture Hiring the Right People   In terms of cash flow, Leo's corporate background did not give him solid exposure in managing cash-flow directly. Although his business was thriving in its first year, the geopolitical situation in Ukraine and Russia affected his business, leading to a 6-month loss-making.   To overcome this, Leo implemented action points such as:   Increased Accountability and Visibility: The team collectively committed to improving processes, tracking performance, and holding each other accountable. Shift from Inputs to Outputs: Rather than focusing on meaningless KPIs (e.g., "how many calls did you make today?"), they focused on more meaningful metrics like conversion ratios and actual results. Implemented OKRs (Objectives and Key Results): This allowed the team to focus on high-impact goals and measurable outcomes, rather than just activity. Strengthened Team Collaboration: The team took ownership of the problem and worked collectively to improve performance and cash flow.   Core3 survived the six-month loss-making period without losing a single team member.   Leo Hewett Bio and Contact Info After over a decade of experience working for large corporates up to Director level, Leo decided to take the plunge and launch his own ethical recruitment business, Core3 -specialising in Finance & Accounting talent.  He believes that business has a bigger role to play in society than just making a profit. Being future-conscious and aware of how our actions affect people and the planet is more important now than it ever has been.    This is why Core3's purpose is to pioneer the ‘Conscious Recruitment' mindset; putting people, planet and progress first. Pledging 3% of sales to their local community and the environment.    Alongside their B Corp certification, Core3 are proud to have won multiple awards since launching in 2022, including REC's 'Start up of the year' (2023), and Business Leader's 'Business of the Year' (2024).   Leo on LinkedIn Core3 website link The Conscious Finance Podcast links Core3 on Facebook Core3 on Instagram Core3 on X Core3 on YouTube   People and Resources Mentioned   Start With Why by Simon Sinek   Connect with Mark Whitby Get your FREE 30-minute strategy call Mark on LinkedIn Mark on Twitter: @MarkWhitby Mark on Facebook Mark on Instagram: @RecruitmentCoach   Subscribe to The Resilient Recruiter   If you've been enjoying the podcast, please take two minutes to leave a review. Join us for an insightful episode as we explore the essential role of accounting in business with our special guest, Nolan Bradbury, founder of Bradfield Accounting and Advisory. We discuss why accounting should be a strategic tool for business owners rather than an afterthought. By comparing financial health to physical health, we highlight the necessity of consistent attention to accounting practices to drive profitability and make informed decisions. Nolan shares how a strategic approach can transform intuition-based decision-making into data-driven insights, especially as businesses scale.   We also cover the importance of choosing the right financial partner, whether it's a bookkeeper or CPA, and how these relationships should be viewed as partnerships. Personal anecdotes illustrate the significant benefits of finding a financial partner who aligns with your business needs and communication style. Furthermore, we tackle the challenges of navigating growth plateaus, using the rule of three and ten to demonstrate how outdated practices can hinder progress and the importance of process adjustments as businesses expand.   Lastly, we emphasize the critical alignment of business growth goals with personal lifestyle aspirations. Real-life examples show how understanding true motivations behind business goals can lead to better work-life balance and satisfaction. Aspen's services include technical accounting, corporate finance, valuations, operations planning and M&A due diligence, among others. Our conversation begins with several questions about how to manage cash and other sources of liquidity amid all of the macroeconomic volatility & uncertainty we're currently witnessing. We then discuss the topic of employee financial literacy, including the question of how transparent CEOs should be with company financials, and then move to questions of capital allocation and how CEOs should think about spending the cash that they generate, and finally we conclude with several considerations related to hiring, specifically focusing on the question of how CEOs should think about hiring a senior finance & accounting leader, which I suspect many listeners are attempting to do for the first time. Andy and Kristy were another perfect pairing for the Culture Crush Business Podcast. Kristy discussed what her team does to help leaders to enhance culture and optimize performance, while Andy gave us insight into the heart of his company and ways other leaders can support their internal teams. According to Kristy and her team, the four main areas that individuals in the workplace are searching for is to be known, grown, included and inspired. These four pieces are areas that Kristy and her team focus on improving but these are four main areas that your team and company can start to focus on as well! When improving company culture and focusing on your people, the ROI is there in the end. There are a handful of tips that came from the conversation that can help improve the company culture, increase retention, and attract the right new candidates. So where do you start? Take the time to know your people and who they are. Support and grow your people. Provide them professional development support and stop being afraid that they “might” leave the company. Guess what? They might stay too! Reach out to your staff and ask for their thoughts and input. Allow your staff the opportunity to feel inspired with the work that your company is doing. Both Know Your Talents and ESI are perfect examples of companies that are doing great things and allowing their staff to feel inspired with what they are doing. The next step is honesty. This means that leadership is honest to the staff and they provide a space for the staff to be honest as well. This opens the opportunity for staff to be open with their bosses and management about their goals and future growth. Maybe the employee wants to grow in the company or maybe they want to have a food truck someday. You'll never know unless you give them the space to open up. This podcast is for any level leader that understands culture is going to happen whether you work on it or not. So why not work on it and make it better? You don't have to be sick to work on your health and your culture doesn't have to be bad to want to work and improve it. All in all- when you start to focus on improving the company culture at your company, once you start you have to keep going. You can't talk to employees about their feelings, thoughts, and ideas and then not consider them as you grow and improve. Andy put it simply, “You can't put the genie back in the bottle.” In the end- as a leader- be bold, courageous, purposeful, and mindful. Know Your Talents (KYT) is a management consulting firm that enhances culture and optimizes performance at every level. Our expertise is centered around four key principles: helping businesses know, include, inspire and grow their employees. In episode 9, Kiali shared her “baby loss” story with us and now she is back to share that of “battling infertility” after losing her baby and trying to conceive again. Infertility is often a silent struggle and women who are struggling to conceive report feelings of depression, anxiety, isolation, and loss of control.   Despite the prevalence of infertility, the majority of infertile women do not share their stories with family or friends, thus increasing their psychological vulnerability. The inability to reproduce naturally can cause feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-esteem. These negative feelings may lead to varying degrees of depression, anxiety, distress, and a poor quality of life.   Therefore, it is our hope that Kiali's story will encourage other women and empower our community to keep encouraging such conversations.   Meet Our Guest:   Kiali J. Garrett is an MBA with a Finance & Accounting background, and she manages large-scale projects for a living. Best known for her positivity, and managerial and leadership skills, she has worked across a broad range of industries including Banking, Hospitality, Automobile and Telecommunications, and Healthcare IT. And then after that, you start asking them – Oh, where's the baby? When are you guys gonna have kids? Don't do that because you have no idea what this couple is going through.” - Kiali Garrett   “Be there for your spouse and support your spouse. Try to recognize that he's on the journey with you and that he's trying to have a baby as well – most importantly, with you. So you need to try to be considerate, if you need to run errands for him, go out and do it. Just don't sit there and throw everything at him.” -  Kiali Garrett “When I got pregnant I was told by doctors and friends that sometimes when you're so stressed, your body is not a  friendly environment so it expels and can't harbor a pregnancy. But I think being calm, and being less stressed, and trying not to stress yourself will help you a lot.” - Kiali Garrett   LEAVE A REVIEW and tell us what you think about the episode so we can continue putting out the best content just for you! There is no greater worry for a parent than losing a baby. A baby's death is particularly distressing since it is frequently unexpected and goes against the natural order of life, in which the baby is expected to precede their parents. The emotional trauma of losing a baby can result in a variety of psychological and physiological issues, including sadness, anxiety, stress-related cognitive and physical symptoms, marital issues, an increased risk of suicide, pain, and guilt.   All of these concerns can last a long time after a baby dies, and they can lead to a documented psychiatric condition like complicated grief disorder, which has many symptoms that are comparable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).   Today, we will be having Kia Tumban on #Episode9 to discuss how she has and is “Surviving Baby Loss”. The goal of having this conversation is to share some key points with any dealing with a loss and how we as a community can be of help to each other during those times. So I decided to focus on some of the things that I have that maybe other people don't necessarily have, feeling gratitude.” - Kiali Garrett   “I learned that the fathers of these babies, they're hurt too. Regardless of whether they carry the pregnancy or not, regardless of whether they went through a C-section or not, they're hurt! We need to be there for them as our spouses or partners, brothers or sisters, we need to be there for them. You need to check on them. Don't only send flowers to your sister, send flowers to your brother-in-law as well.” -  Kiali Garrett “I feel like as a community, we should also tend to attend to the men because the men as well are going through a lot. Whether the baby is here or not, the men also feel that impact because they're also the closest wants to you, and it's also their child, it's a man's child as well so we shouldn't neglect their mental health.” - Anyoh Fombad “I remember when I was going through my journey, I was listening to a lot of people with a positive mindset and it helped me get out of those dark days that I was in to find some light. 2021 came and went in the blink of an eye. Coming off of an extremely challenging year, no one knew what to expect 12 months ago. We saw signs of the job market thawing in Q42020. The Unemployment Rate hit 6.7% in Dec 2020 (down from 14.7% in April 2020). But a recovery was far from certain.   Twelve months later? Labor shortages are plaguing every industry. The unemployment rate hit 3.9% in December 2021. But that is only part of the story. The labor participation rate (percentage of Adult Americans in the workforce is near an all-time low of 61.9%. Broad numbers about the market as a whole aren't terribly useful. Understanding how they affect you or your company is more important.   Hirewell started releasing our Quarterly Data Insights series to discuss the trends we are seeing in hiring. We've got 90+ recruiters across the US. They are spread across six functional practices - Tech, Human Resources & Recruiting, Finance & Accounting, Marketing, and Real Estate/Construction. In 2021, we helped over 350 companies hire over 1500 people. So we see firsthand what is happening when it comes to hiring. We crunched the numbers to see what happened in 2021. And what might be in store for 2022.   2021 Hiring Trends   The year over year increase in hiring volume was massive. Our hiring volume increased 2.5x. Hiring increased 30% every quarter (compared to previous quarter) until Q4, when we saw the standard slow down around the holidays. When looking at year over year numbers, Q4 was up 310% from the prior year.   What was hot? Software engineers. But that is no surprise. The insatiable demand for engineers barely slowed down in 2020. In 2021 we helped companies hire over 200 software engineers. But that is only part of the story. We saw the average salary increase every quarter. -Q1: 113k -Q2: 119k -Q3: 127k -Q4 :134k   That's an increase in average compensation of 18% in one year.   What else was hot? Recruiters. Hirewell launched its HR & Recruiters practice 10 years ago. In that time, we have placed several hundred recruiters at companies across the US. We placed 90 at clients in 2021. That was after placing 1 between April and October 2020. When the market swings that wildly, it catches a lot of people by surprise. It also causes salaries to spike quickly.   -Q1 Average Recruiter Salary = $85k -Q3/Q4 Average Recruiter Salary = $114k   That's an increase of 34% in roughly 9 months. What a time to be alive for recruiters.   2021 Hirewell Internal Highlights 2021 was a busy year for us at Hirewell. -We grew by over 40 people and are just under 100 employees. -We expanded nationally. Pre-pandemic, more than 90% of our employees were in Chicago. Now more than 33% of our people are in other markets. -Our turnover was 6% (roughly a quarter of our industry's average). The vast majority of that turnover was our employees going to work for our clients.   The biggest story for us in 2021? We took on outside investment from Prytek and bought a software company. We think services + technology will be what drives our continued growth.   2022 - What's next? It is a fool's exercise to predict what is going to happen in the course of a year. That doesn't mean we don't have some educated guesses though.   -Hiring in January picked up right where 2021 left off. We saw an 18% year-over-year increase in job openings. January starts are double what they were in 2021 -There are roughly 11,000,000 open jobs in the US. There will continue to be a shortage of qualified candidates. -Recruiters are going to continue to be in high demand. As are software engineers. -Wages are going to continue to rise, but for how long? 20+% increases are not sustainable for most companies. -Companies need to start thinking outside the box. Upskilling existing workers and hiring people without prior experience needs to be a priority for all companies. -Recruiting technology needs to evolve. There is a shortage of recruiters. And they spend way too much time sourcing candidates. We are working to address this challenge.   What's next for Hirewell?   We are continuing to hire - we've brought on 8 new hires in January. Our OnDemand Recruiting practice is on pace to grow 100% from 2021. Our investment in technology is already paying dividends for our recruiters at Hirewell. We are excited to roll it (Sourcwell) out to clients later in Q1. If you are interested in becoming a beta client - let us know!

The internet allows us to live in a more connected, global community. However it's one thing to read about other cultures and something else entirely to experience it personally...no matter what your age. This week on the podcast I'm chatting with Scott Marshall of Semester at Sea about the life-changing experience of not just studying abroad but also learning about the culture and history of multiple countries and destinations. (And Semester at Sea isn't just for youth; there's a lifelong learner program, too!) Learning about other cultures helps to bridge the gap across oceans and countrysides and helps us to become more empathic. Scott has found that the way his program is structured changes the brain chemistry as it allows participants to test biases and reflect on themselves--before, during, and after travel.  This is such an interesting conversation and I'll bet that you'll be looking up the next Semester at Sea program before you're done listening! About Scott Marshall: In Scott's role as the President and CEO, he is responsible for the overall strategic direction and financial well-being of the Institute for Shipboard Education and the Semester at Sea program.  He works to advance the mission of Semester at Sea and ensure sustainable revenue in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team (Advancement, Academics, Finance & Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing & Communications and Operations & Risk Management), the over 70,000 Semester at Sea alumni and the ISE Board of Trustees.  Scott collaborates closely with Colorado State University, the Academic Partner to Semester at Sea, and stewards strong support for the philanthropic community. Prior to the position of President and CEO, Scott served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at ISE/Semester at Sea and various leadership roles at Portland State University, including Vice Provost for Academic and Fiscal Planning and Interim Dean and Associate Dean of Graduate Programs in the School of Business.  Scott earned his Ph.D. in International Business from the University of Oregon, a Master of International Affairs from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from Willamette University.   Jump in the Conversation: [2:08] Importance of study abroad [5:42] Get lost to understand yourself [8:16] Origins of Semester at Sea (SES) and what a semester at sea looks like [10:00] What brought Scott to this program [10:22] This is the optimal design of study abroad [12:47] Success of reluctant participants [14:15] SES learning experiences [17:23] Outcomes of Semester at Sea [20:03] What's next for Semester at Sea [24:19] How Semester at Sea can help different generations [29:23] Turbo Time [36:43] Scott's magic wand [40:36] Maureen's takeaways   Links Semester at Sea Global Perspective Inventory Humanitarian trilogy documentary filmed on SES NY Times article on The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human by Jonathan Gottschall  Abby Ingleman 3D Sea 2009 Sylvia Earl TED Talk Email Maureen Maureen's TEDx: Changing My Mind to Change Our Schools The Education Evolution Facebook: Follow Education Evolution Twitter: Follow Education Evolution LinkedIn: Follow Education Evolution EdActive Collective Maureen's book: Creating Micro-Schools for Colorful Mismatched Kids Micro-school feature on Good Morning America The Micro-School Coalition Facebook: The Micro-School Coalition LEADPrep

Evolving Energy Strategies In Higher Ed - What's Next?, Ep #11

Beyond The Meter

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 12, 2020 73:31

Institutes of higher education are large consumers of energy. From the lights and heat that are needed to keep students and faculty comfortable enough to learn effectively, to the equipment, technology, and staff required to keep things running, the expense is enormous. But for those same reasons, these institutions have a tremendous opportunity to push forward the move toward sustainable energy solutions, which will result in a cleaner environment and better future, and cost savings for them. Today, three guests from the realm of higher education join John for a frank conversation about the overall challenges faced by institutions of higher learning when it comes to renewable energy. Join John and his guests, Bill Guerrero of Ithaca College, Dennis Elliot of Cal Poly, and Wayne Johnson of Duke Energy for this enlightening conversation.   You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The experience and background of our guests, leaders in Higher Education [0:55] A big-picture view: Energy management and sustainability in Higher Education [7:24] Some of the most productive investments in energy efficiency [16:38] The role of resiliency in energy solutions for Higher Education [24:12] How to pay for the improvements needed [32:56] Master Plans enable colleges & universities to plan toward sustainable energy There are vast differences in the way institutes of higher education make decisions and implement them when it comes to the capital improvements required to move toward sustainable and energy-efficient solutions for their campuses. The predominant way these institutions move the needle is through the inclusion of sustainability initiatives within the university or college’s Master Plan. These plans are revisited and revamped often because the situation on school campuses is changing all the time. New needs arise and circumstances demand new approaches. It’s a perfect opportunity to move their energy usage toward sustainable solutions. This conversation highlights the approach two leaders in higher education have taken when it comes to renewable energy improvements on campus. Cal Poly and Ithaca College have both focused on integrating sustainable energy improvements into their Master Planning process, with one of those schools even creating an independent energy Master Plan due to the increased importance of the issue. The issue of resiliency is of paramount importance for higher education The wildfires that have raged across California in 2020 illustrate one of the many reasons colleges and universities need to build resiliency into their energy procurement solutions. Cal Poly discovered that their energy solution was inadequate as a result of the fires. The institution relied on a sole provider and delivery mechanism that was endangered by the wildfires. The impact of a power loss is massive to facilities, educational systems, remote learning, and more. To address these issues, many opportunities exist to ensure power is not disrupted and education continues. Regional transmission systems with various substations are one solution, as are generators use in a synchronized fashion. On-site batteries can be used to implement load-shifting during peak energy consumption hours, and larger schools are looking into microgrids, co-generation, and combined heat and power sources.   The most effective ways to fund energy improvements The COVID pandemic of 2020 has shown all of us that the economic conditions we enjoy one day may be in jeopardy the next. It’s an example of how various crises can shift the focus of an organization or institution to new areas, and environmental sustainability goals could be a regrettable casualty when this occurs. Add to that, the fact that many colleges face serious asset replacement issues shortly. 80% of schools surveyed say they plan on funding those capital improvements through increased enrollment, but because of the pandemic, full enrollment is not expected to happen for many years. The reality is that sustainability initiatives compete with every other need at institutions of higher learning, and the assets needed for energy projects are behind-the-scenes and not as easily noticed as the other more superficial things like paint, carpet, landscaping, and building facades. Those in charge of energy, facilities, and capital improvements have their work cut out for them in trying to gain the buy-in for energy improvements and upgrades during such times. But it’s entirely possible, and our guests give many helpful suggestions about how to position your budget requests in ways that enthuse and engage your stakeholders. CJ Hendry was born in South Africa, grew up in Australia and now lives in Brooklyn. She studied Architecture and was pursuing Finance & Accounting at University. She decided none of those were a good fit. She releases collections or series 1-2x per year.  What is the scribbling technique, and how did you come up with it? Accidentally stumbled into. She draws into a hyper realistic style and sometimes people mistake her work for photographs. It could be a mix of cross-hatching from when she was studying architecture, but she doesn't have to lift her hand off the page How did you make the decision to drop out of college? How did this go over with your family? Come from a traditional old-school family. Her mom is a teacher and dad works in computers and they are both hard working. Her parents let her figure it out when she told them she wanted to drop out and pursue fine art.  Why did you decide to not work with an art gallery? What are the pros and cons of working with an art gallery? This wasn't intentional. The goal was to work with a gallery, and is open to this at some point. Things have snowballed into the next thing, but at some point she will be open to working with a gallery. A pro is getting to work at the speed she wants to work at. She enjoys every aspect of running the process and has a very supportive team. Galleries have relationships and access to the right people, which can be a pro. Doesn't like to push her art on others. Getting her art in a museum is part of the process. Artists focusing on getting pieces in a museum can be tricky because they will create museum art. Focus on making something that people haven't seen before. Some artists tailor their career around a prize, which keeps them from progressing in a way they could.  With no formal art training, how did you discover you had a talent for this? Discovered the talent at age 11 and had the ability to draw. The school she went to was more professional qualifications and took a long time to realize art could be her full time career. How do you decide what to draw? Used to draw high-end subjects: draw Chanel bags or dip an Hermes Birkin Bag. Subjects are now slowly moving away from objects and are going more to abstract. It is determined by what she is interested in at the time, and wants to show a progression. The Marlboro Man series came about because she is fascinated with Richard Prince. He did something inspired by The Marlboro Man and she wondered why it had to be so masculine. So she drew cigarette butts with Chanel lipstick on the ends, because this is what brand she wears. It wasn't fun to get the subject, but something she had to do to get the picture!  How long does it take to create a piece of your artwork? A couple of weeks or months. She is in the studio 7 days a week, and work all day long, so she can make the work quickly! How do you determine the pricing for your artwork? Something costs what people are prepared to pay. She only does 1 of 1, there are no replications, so there is value in that. She can only make so many works per year, and she is making less and less. There is a 2 or 3 year waiting list for her artwork. What is your view on collaborations? (Fashion brands, other artists, etc) They are great if it is the right partner. She collaborated with Christian Louboutin, which was a great experience. Last year, she drew Pantone chips, but she didn't collaborate with Pantone  What direction do you want to go in? Produce as much art as possible or something different? Going to continue to make the shows and they will get bigger is what she can control. There are lots of people who can dictate where your career goes in the art world. She has goals, but she isn't sure when --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/delia-folk8/support

Having been raised overseas as a third culture kid, diversity has always been an important factor for Jamela. She attended boarding school on the east coast, then went on to pursue a B.A. in economics from the University of Southern California and a Masters Degree in Finance & Accounting from Kingston University in England. She started Kahmune shortly after when she noticed a gap in the market for skin tone products for dark skinned women such as herself. Having spent the majority of her childhood overseas in the Middle East, it is this international experience that Jamela cites as the reason she is so passionate about diversity and inclusion. With no formal background in fashion design, she credits her desire to fill a much needed gap in the market and life long love of fashion as driving factors in her quest to create change in the industry.
