Shermin Voshmgir is a leading thinker in the world of Web 3. This podcast explores the intersections between human dynamics and Web 3 developments. Shermin discusses the new possibilities of more democratic and decentralised ways of being and organising, and shares her growing concerns about how old politics, ego-driven behaviours, and simply the lack of awareness around potential dangers. There are tensions around transparency and privacy, algorithmic bias, and lack of participation in decentralised systems which leaves a few people making decisions. Power dynamics and biases become embedded in new DAOs and networks, making them difficult to influence and change. Shermin shares her new adventures in the domain of agriculture as she works with her partner to bring together Web 3 technologies, such as tokenization, that will support more sustainable farming. We are all entering the new world of Web 3, and Shermin Voshmgir is a brilliant translator who brings that space to life for those of us struggling to understand it - a must-listen episode!  Bio  Shermin is the author of the best-selling book “Token Economy“, the founder of Token Kitchen and BlockchainHub Berlin. In the past, she was the director of the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics at the Vienna University of Economics which she also co-founded and a curator of the infamous project TheDAO back in 2016. She is currently setting up a data-driven farm in Portugal with her Partner where they investigate how to tokenize agricultural assets and sustainable ecosystem services such as soil quality or CO2 capture with the support of hardware wallets and sensor technology. Shermin studied Information Systems Management at the Vienna University of Economics and film-making in Madrid. Under her alter ego KAMIKAT.SE she has also created a series of audio-visual works. She is Austrian, with Iranian roots, and now lives in Portugal where she works on the intersection of technology, agriculture, art & social science. Her biggest strength is to make complex issues easily understandable to a wide audience without losing the depth or scope of the issues she writes or talks about. Shermin has a long track record of public speaking about Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies, the Web3 and the future of technologies in general – from prestigious community conferences such as TedX, The Next Web or Re:publica, to private events for companies and institutions such as Vodafone, Audi, IMF and the Wordbank. She has a multidisciplinary perspective of how Web3 will impact different areas of society. She believes that Web3 and its tokenized applications can shift the dynamics of our socio-economic systems. Her focus is to make technology accessible to a non-tech audience so that all those who use technology can also take part in the decision-making process of the technology they use. RAJAN DAVE, M.D. In 2001, Raj Dave received his B.S. in Information Systems Management from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Thereafter, he was accepted to attend American University of the Caribbean Medical School, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine in 2010. By 2013, Raj finished his residency at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center in New Jersey, and began practicing general medicine, a highly regulated industry. As a practicing physician, many of Raj's patients were military veterans who returned from deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan and suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), insomnia, anxiety, and chronic pain. Raj noticed a considerable number of his patients self-medicated with opioids and alcohol, or took prescribed medications, like highly addictive benzodiazepines such as Xanax, to treat their mental health conditions. Knowing the harsh effect these drugs have on the human body, Raj began studying medicinal cannabis to better understand its functionality. During the course of his research, Raj discovered cannabis was a much safer way of treating certain symptoms than traditional medicine such as opioids and benzodiazepines. The company describes itself as “a biotech company dedicated to producing a new generation of nutrition—one that's better for the planet, better for the animals, and better for people everywhere. Utilizing its proprietary, cell-based technology, the company is creating better-for-you milk ingredients sustainably and affordably, with benefits that extend beyond the dining table and into the heart of humanity.” When I first heard this description I was highly skeptical about their ability to compete with what I know is a very efficient dairy industry. But what I learned from Fengru shed a lot of light on where companies like TurtleTree still have a place in the future of agriculture. In my opinion, that includes cultivating high value proteins for things like ingredients and supplements and pharmaceuticals. Another aspect I find very valuable about what TurtleTree is doing is trying to close the gap between infant formula and real human breast milk. We've seen issues with formula supply chains recently, and TurtleTree's approach can apply to all forms of milk, including human milk.  This is the fifth and final episode in the series I've been doing over the past year with Amy Wu who is the author of the book “From Farms to Incubators: Women Innovators Revolutionizing How Our Food is Grown”. Amy is passionate about featuring women leaders in agtech and I have been glad to share that passion with her and all of you by featuring Joanne Zhang in episode 263, Ponsi Trivisvavet in episode 273, Shely Aronov in episode 290, Ros Harvey in episode 304, and of course Fengru today. I highly encourage you to purchase a copy of Amy's book, as it not only includes these guests but also several other former guests of this podcast: like Pam Marrone, Fatma Kaplan, Sarah Nolet, Mariana Vasconcelos, Christine Su, and others.  Alright, let's get to our featured conversation with Fengru Lin, co-founder and CEO of TurtleTree - and yes, we are going to ask her where the company name came from. Since founding the company in 2019, TurtleTree has become a top player in the alternative protein industry with $40 million in startup funding. Fengru is an alumna of Singapore Management University where she studied Information Systems Management and Marketing. Before starting TurtleTree, she held positions with Google and Salesforce.

Items from lumber to clothing to electronics have been difficult to find in recent months. The reason is often tied to the supply chain, which has been adversely affected throughout the pandemic, forcing consumers to wait until their new purchases arrive. Ram Ganeshan is a Professor of Operations and Information Systems Management at William & Mary School of Business. He teaches supply chain management and digital strategies courses. JV provides an innovative, bottom‐up approach to critical infrastructure resilience in two unique ways. Whereas most federal efforts to improve resiliency focus on regional or multistate emergency response, JV focuses on cities and municipalities where critical infrastructure and populations are most heavily populated. Furthermore, JV deviates from other cybersecurity and national preparedness exercises in that it builds around areas of interest nominated by the participants. Although JV events include national-level capabilities and resources, they are conceptually driven by the concerns of the cities and their infrastructure partners. Through this approach, the Department of Defense is able to harvest insights about potential roles, dependencies, partners, and support requests, while cities are able to discover potential capability gaps and expand their critical infrastructure information-sharing networks before a potential disaster strikes. The flexible JV platform is capable of including information operations scenarios, as well. He holds a PhD in Anti-Money Laundering and Information Systems from the London School of Economics, a Masters from the LSE in Information Systems. He has a background in Physics from the University of Crete as well as a Degree in Music (Piano) from the National Conservatory of Athens. At the LSE, he taught on Information Systems Management, Information Systems Security and Research Methods. He has contributed on 3 major EU-funded AML research projects, two of which are on the intersection between Information Systems and Anti-Money Laundering (projects Spotlight and GATE), and another one on Information Society (FIDIS). His research on AML and Risk has been featured in the select bibliography of the United Nations, while his work on ‘Data Growth and the Consequences to Anti-Money Laundering' has won the Emerald Highly Commended Award from the Journal of Money Laundering Control. He has co-authored a large number of research deliverables on Anti-Money Laundering for the European Commission and the Future of Identity for the Information Society (FIDIS), a large scale 6-year EU-funded project with 25 academic/industry participants across the EU (including Microsoft and IBM), for which he was a Convener of its Steering Group. Additionally, he is the author of two books: Science's First Mistake (on Methodology, Systems Theory, and the creation of Epistemological Paradoxes alongside Prof Ian Angell), published worldwide by Bloomsbury Academic, and ‘Technology and Anti-Money Laundering: A Systems Theory and Risk-Based Approach', a monograph published worldwide by Edward Elgar. His book on AML entitled ‘Technology and Anti-Money Laundering' is the first book to provide a coherent theoretical structure for Anti-Money Laundering research and practice based on Systems Theory, and the first book to provide an Information Systems perspective on Anti-Money Laundering. Ian Angell is a forecaster of the socio-political and business consequences of Information and Communication Technologies, with over four decades of research experience into the impact of computerization on society. He is an Emeritus Professor of Information Systems in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics. Angell is well known for his pragmatic, down-to-earth and outspoken views on electronic commerce. However, his reputation is based on his radical no-nonsense support of Capitalism in the Information Age, which he portrays in his books The New Barbarian Manifesto, and Flight of the Golden Geese. Angell features routinely in the press and media worldwide (noteworthy are his views on “off-planet banking,” and the future of money), and he is a stalwart of the international lecture circuit - he has stepped in at short notice to cover for the absences of both President Mikhail Gorbachev (for Stern Stewart in Chartes) and Senator Edward Kennedy (for Zefer at Harvard). Angell has acted as a consultant on managing the complexity of information systems to a large number of companies, and to governments and the EU. He was a personal advisor to the Cabinet of Federico Mayor when the latter was Director General of UNESCO, and he has consulted for the Russian Ministry of Science, and the Malaysian National IT Council.

We were very fortunate this week to be able to interview Kimberly Ellison-Taylor, the Immediate Past Chair of the American Institute of CPAs, for this episode of Life In Accounting, the Where Accountants Go podcast. A Fortunate Turn of Events Kimberly knew from an early age that she wanted to be a CPA.  As early as 3rd grade, she realized that becoming a CPA would be a career that was both stable and financially sound.  Due to a miscommunication though, she ended up attending a university that did not have a formal accounting major path available, so she instead majored in Information Systems Management.  However, this path ended up to work out much better in the long-run.  She still followed her dream and acquired the additional hours she needed to take the CPA exam, and now has enjoyed a career that mixes both her financial & accounting acumen with her strong background in information technology. Failed the CPA exam at first! We include this note as a motivator for anyone that has had difficulty with the exam.  Kimberly was recently the chairperson for the national CPA association – AICPA – but believe it or not she failed the exam the first time.  It doesn't matter if you fail it once, or a few times even.  Rather it's important that you learn from the experience and you try again.  If a goal is worthwhile, then it's worth investing in.  Kimberly very openly shares this ‘failure' experience in hopes of inspiring those other individuals that are striving to pass the exam and realize that it may take a little more effort than they originally anticipated. Soft Skills Are Important With Kimberly's technology background, you may find this interesting, but she stressed a few times how important skills like the ability to inspire and the ability to motivate will be moving forward.  As more and more of our routine accounting functions are taken care of by AI, we will be left with the more exciting and interesting parts of our jobs – the parts that require people skills and judgement.  Anything you can do to increase your abilities in these areas will be invaluable as you continue to grow your career in our ever-expanding tech-filled world. PD04 - Are We Asking Providers the Wrong Questions? | Ron Urwongse | CAQH

The #HCBiz Show!

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2017 41:00

On this episode, the fourth in our ongoing Provider Directory Series, we continue to unravel the "why" behind provider directory inaccuracies. One major theme that's emerged is that we have a context gap between health plans and providers. That is, even when we're asking the right people at the right time, we might be asking the wrong questions. Our guest, Ron Urwongse, a Senior Product Manager at CAQH, explains how adding a level of specificity to our questions can yield dramatically different results. For example, if you ask a provider if they work at an office, they may say yes even if there's only a slight chance they ever will (i.e. to cover for a colleague). The tendency, Ron explains, is that providers play defense - they don't want to have a claim denied if they ever do submit one from that office. By adding some specificity to our questions, we could cut down on the confusion. How often do you work at this office? Or, do you accept new patients at this office? Are bound to yield more accurate results. These follow-on questions help the providers to understand what they are truly being asked. We can add even more context by making sure they know how the information is going to be used. Where do you bill from so that our billing department can process your claims properly? Where should our provider directory list you as accepting new patients? Ron and I discuss this context issue and so much more, including: What is provider data? (2:00) Besides demographics, what else do we need to know about providers? (4:00) In addition to patients, who else is affected by bad provider data? (5:30) We're spending billions of dollars managing provider directories. Why are they still broken? (8:15) Is it fair to place accountability on the providers and put pressure on them to resolve this issue? (10:57) What are the proposed penalties from CMS for Medicare Advantage plans whose directories fall out-of-date? (11:50) Has anyone been fined yet? (12:10) Do health plans do a good job of sharing provider information across departments within their own organization?  (12:10) Why can't I just go to NPPES? Why aren't the doctors keeping their data updated? (15:00) Why do providers (and their groups) report that they work at locations that they don't work at? (17:37) Why do providers feel that their data submissions fall into a black hole once submitted? (20:00) The typical 5 -doctor practice has 12 contracts and each of them requires 140 data points. That's 8,400 data points for a relatively small practice. (21:20) Are the regulators being reasonable in their demands? (23:30) How does contracting and reporting at the group-level cause problems for provider directories? (25:30) Is there any reluctance to share because of security/privacy/competitive concerns? (29:15) How does the expansion of the care team make this problem more complex? (31:40) What's happening on the solution side? (33:15) How can we foster safe collaboration among industry competitors? (34:10) A call to reduce provider burden, while simultaneously raising their accountability. (35:00) What is the minimum necessary data set for provider directories? (38:30) What is CAQH doing to solve the problem of bad provider data/inaccurate provider directories? (37:00) I hope you enjoy it! - Don Lee   About Ron Urwongse and CAQH Ron Urwongse is a Senior Product Manager at CAQH. Ron guides the cross-functional team responsible for CAQH ProView. His Mom raised him as a “single Mom”. She didn’t remarry until Howard was in his early 20s. Howard began his life with his Mom and Dad on Roxanna Road NW just south of the 16th Street Circle. In 1961, his Mom moved the family to Montgomery County where he went to school. Howard attended Blair High School in Silver Spring, and went on to the University of Maryland where he graduated with a degree in Information Systems Management. He says “Unfortunately it was not something I was very good at . . . I was terrible at it. . . to this day I'm terrible with computers.” Andy asks Howard about his family and how he and his wife Polly met. Polly worked as a receptionist for Howard’s advertising agency, The Bomstein Agency, and they were moving offices. “I remember the day I was smitten with Polly. We were moving the office . . . literally across the street . . . basically carting things from one office to the other. The [new] office had hardwood floors and I remember as we were moving things in Polly caught my eye because she was wearing blue jeans and Nike tennis shoes and a sweatshirt and I just thought she was beautiful.” Howard and Polly have three beautiful daughters all of whom are college grads. Andy chuckles and tells Howard that he looks a “little heavier now” now that he’s finished paying tuition. A conversation ensues between Andy and Howard about college in today’s world and we learn that Howard is an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland. He teaches marketing and branding. Andy asks Howard what led him into advertising and starting his own agency. Howard Bomstein takes us through life after college and some of the jobs he had before creating The Bomstein Agency. In 1970, before graduation from the University of Maryland, Howard knew he was going to be drafted so he enlisted in the Army and “rose to the enormous rank of specialist fourth class and my military occupational specialty MOS was a 76B20 I was a clerk typist. . . in a supply unit and what you learn to do in is to count blankets. “ He became very good at counting blankets before leaving the Army and coming home to go to grad school. Howard Bomstein graduated with a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Penn State, but instead of working in public administration he took an offer to work for his cousin in the home building business. He became an assistant in the marketing department at US Homes for $8000.00 a year doing statistical analysis. “In the Fall of 1974, we had a recession. It was pretty severe. . .” and was due to price control of gasoline. “So, Herman came to me and said I'm sorry I've got some bad news but I have to lay you off because we're not selling any houses and the markets terrible.” All was not lost, however, because Howard had gotten to know Bill Regardie. Bill and his wife, Renay, had Housing Data Reports to which US Homes subscribed.

A self-described ‘activator and connector,’ Larry Gioia doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet (and thinks that sleep is overrated!) Larry, a Pittsburgh native, graduated from Gannon University in 2004 and Carnegie Mellon in 2005. At Gannon, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems.  During his sophomore year, Larry began exploring his entrepreneurial interests and started GioiaDesign.net, where he worked as an independent consultant advising Erie businesses as they established their presence on the Internet. After Gannon, Larry went on to attend the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).  It was here that he earned his Master of Information Systems Management degree. While at CMU, Larry continued his passion for leadership and entrepreneurship.  He was the recipient of the MISM Student Leadership Award and also helped launch COMPackage.com, the Alphabot mobile app, and advised numerous other technology start-up ventures. Upon graduation from CMU, Larry joined Diamond Management & Technology Consultants in 2005 as a technology consultant.  Diamond was later acquired by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in 2011.  At PwC, Larry serves as a Senior Director in PwC’s Health Industries Advisory technology consulting practice.  As a digital architect and thinking partner, Larry has worked alongside healthcare executives and innovators across the healthcare ecosystem – predominately in big pharma.  He is passionate about the future of healthcare and how technology is disrupting the delivery and consumption of health services in the New Health Economy. Beyond his work at PwC, Larry remains active with his alma maters and also in the Pittsburgh community.  Larry is a regular guest lecturer at CMU on the topics of leadership, consulting, enterprise architecture, and technology trends, he has sponsored four IS capstone projects, serves as the lead for PwC Advisory recruiting efforts across campus, serves as an alumni mentor, and is the recipient of the 2015 Carnegie Mellon Alumni Meritorious Service Award.   Larry also proudly served Gannon as a Director on the National Alumni Board from 2011-2013, was a speaker at the inaugural Gannon Ongoing Leadership Development (GOLD) Conference in 2013, and is a recipient of the 2015 Gannon Distinguished Alumni Award. In his community, Larry serves on the Board of Directors of two Pittsburgh-based non-profits - Find Some Flow and Paddle Without Pollution, he volunteers as a Trip Leader with Venture Outdoors, and serves on the organizing committee of PwC’s United Way Giving Campaign. Larry still actively maintains his entrepreneurial interests as the Founder of Dynamic Paddlers – a kayaking school which specializes in kayak instruction for people with disabilities and the Co-Founder of the Pittsburgh Adaptive Sports Network (PASN) – a consortium of adaptive sports/recreation organizations from around the greater Pittsburgh area. Most recently, Larry helped launch the Pittsburgh Kindness Initiative – a global social experiment that aims to measure to the ripple effect of human kindness and ‘paying it forward.’ When not jet setting around the country on business or connecting the dots in the community, it’s a safe bet that you can find Larry in the outdoors taking advantage of the multitude of outlets we have in the region to stay active.  Larry resides in Pittsburgh, PA and enjoys spending time (usually in the outdoors!) with family, friends, his better half, Maria Balestrino, and their dog, Bruna.
