“Think about the pandemic without the internet,” says Cloudflare co-founder and COO Michelle Zatlyn. The world's sudden shift to doing almost everything online only worked because network engineers, IT administrators, and internet infrastructure companies like Cloudflare had done the work. Michelle says that, both personally and professionally, she's fine being under the radar because she doesn't need to be publicly reminded of the importance of her job: “It's like all the roads, the tunnels, the bridges ... when it works, it's magic. Really, you don't even know we exist.”In this episode, Michelle and Joubin discuss the pressure of success, advice for founders, low-drama startups, the power of the Cloudflare blog, internet security, the cross-country U-Haul trip, sweating the details, San Francisco as a “power center,” helping the next generation of founders, “the airplane effect,” injecting tension, why learning is a superpower, and choosing to feel the bumps in the road.In this episode, we cover: Carrying the torch for women in infrastructure and “just getting started” (01:15) Being under the radar and the over-glamorization of founders (07:19) Why it's so hard to hire & empower a great team (15:35) How Cloudflare is building a better internet (22:08) How Michelle, Matthew Prince, and Lee Holloway met and why they started Cloudflare (28:23) “Losing” at TechCrunch Disrupt's Startup Battlefield — and turning it into a win (34:10) Building remote vs. choosing to be in the SF Bay Area (40:54) “I don't understand why anyone starts companies” (46:28) How to run the best board meeting ever (55:31) Why Michelle brought her kids to the New York Stock Exchange for “Mom's Special Day” (01:00:51) The skill that sets good founders apart from great ones (01:02:34) How a back injury took away a year of Michelle's life (01:10:16) Links: Connect with Michelle Twitter LinkedIn Connect with Joubin Twitter LinkedIn Email: grit@kleinerperkins.com  Learn more about Kleiner Perkins

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. We are back from Disrupt, which means we're picking up the pieces of our work lives, getting back on track. Equity is now on its regular schedule, which is good. A big thanks to the entire podcast production crew for making last week happen. Now! What did we get into this morning? The following:Stocks rallied around the world, but fell in China. Chinese equities suffered under investor pessimism at the cementing of Xi Jinping's authority over the country's economy. Elsewhere, hope that central bank policies would not carry as much teeth in the future as we have seen in recent months sent stocks higher. The finalists from the recent Startup Battlefield competition were all pretty freaking great, especially the focus that several had on making our home planet a bit cleaner, or better. Commercial solutions will be required for us to do any damn thing about the planet, so, here's to the companies working on it.Minerva Lithium wound up winning, which seemed legit given the sheer need we have as a people for lithium these days (it figures in battery production).Other points of conversation: No Instacart IPO coming, Yat Siu is still bullish on crypto games, and it is earnings season!Ok, chat soon!Equity drops at 7 a.m. PT every Monday and Wednesday, and at 6 a.m. PT on Fridays, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotifyand all the casts. So you've made an API. It connects one thing to another, and it works well. How do you turn that into a business? On this week's TechCrunch Live, I host the perfect pairing of guests to talk about this.Stephany Kirkpatrick co-founded and runs Orum and has raised $82m for the company, which sells the Momentum APIOrum calls it "A simple, smart payments API." It enables customers and businesses access to real-time payment rails without requiring a bank integration. This is a hugely impressive feat – but we're not here to talk about the API itself but how you get investors to fund an API.With Stephanie, we have Matt Sueoka from AMEX Ventures – the VC arm of American Express. They participated in Orum's Series A. And I think this makes for an interesting setup.AMEX Ventures is a corporate venture capital firm, and they tend to have different goals and operational input than a traditional VC fund. And because of that, you, as a startup founder, should have different approaches and expectations. We'll talk about it.But first, let's talk about TechCrunch Disrupt. The show is coming up in October, and tickets are still available. It's live and in person in San Francisco's Moscone Center. We have five stages of content with huge newsmakers on the Disrupt stage, more content like TechCrunch Live on the TC + stage, breakouts sessions, Q&A events, and Startup Battlefield, which is huge this year. Anyway, I hope you can make it. If anything, come to the event and watch me mess up live and in person. I'm hosting Startup Battlefield, which means there are so many names I'll going to miss pronounce.

The electrification of the economy depends on reliable access to a collection of valuable but environmentally damaging metals, including lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese. We talk with Megan O'Conor, cofounder and CEO of Nth Cycle, a Beverly, Mass-based startup poised to disrupt the metal recycling industry with an electro-extraction system that can operate in very small facilities spread all over the world. The Nth Cycle process can handle up to five tons of material each day in a very compact facility — only 1,000 square feet, about the half the size of the typical retail storefront. That means in theory that materials could be recycled near the source and reused locally, and with 3D-printing maturing the idea of a locally printed car or EV batter is a very real possibility. The Nth Cycle technology may also help to extract more metal from ore and post-processing waste materials that have been discarded by mining and smelting companies. Nth Cycle recently took second place in TechCrunch's Startup Battlefield competition, a significant accomplishment, and has raised $4.5 million. You can learn more at https://nthcycle.com/.

In this episode, I recap my experience at the #TechCrunchDisrupt2018 Conference. #TechCrunchDisrupt is where you'll find the renowned Startup Battlefield competition, a virtual Hackathon, hundreds of startups in Startup Alley, Workshops and legendary networking at their After Parties all in San Francisco, where startup dreams began. Two of the best interviews at the conference were with #Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Cruise Founder Kyle Vogt. In the interview with Khosrowshahi, he explains why Uber is investing heavily in Scooters stating that it is part of "building a [transportation] platform." Khosrowshahi also explains that Uber will not longer just be a ride sharing company, but a business that will manage "point-to-point" transportation, which could include scooters, trains, cars and many more forms of transportation. Self-driving cars are the future and Cruise has relaunched its strategy to dominate this space. Vogt explains why Cruise had to drop its retrofit strategy to focus on the future of self-driving cars. Vogt also gives Elon Musk a back-slap by saying that too many executives in Silicon Valley were to arrogant to seek and accept help. Vogt explained that his partnership with General Motors is the perfect partnership for a startup in this space. In episode 33, I teach startup how to fight like a Guerrillapreneur. In the episode, I showcase my 4-Ds framework that reaches the same conclusion that Vogt came to in partnering with General Motors. Please check out that episode https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/ceyeroconsulting/episodes/2018-08-23T12_26_37-07_00. I spent time in Start Alley meeting with the most disruptive robotics companies. First, I met with Kiwi Robotics ("https://www.kiwicampus.com"). #Kiwicampus provides autonomous delivery robots that can delivery food directly to your door. Using their app, you can unlock the Kiwi Robot and retrieve your food. Second, I interviewed Erin Llao, the founder Mule Robotics (https://www.mulerobotics.com). #MuleRobotics created a shopping cart that follows you in the store while also calculating your total and paying for your items. MuleRobotics makes shopping easy. Third, I met with Smart Gurlz, creators of the world's only programmable robot for girls. Kari Byron, former star of Mythbusters, has teamed up with founder Sharmi Albreachtsen, to promote a robot toy designed for girls that can teach them to program. Finally, I met with the founder of Koder (https://www.koder.com), is a gig economy freelance platform where top coders compete for bounties/tasks. We are on episode #06 of Custom Made and I’m talking with Justin Crandall, co-founder and CEO of lawn care company Robin Autopilot. Robin Autopilot is on a mission to disrupt the multi-billion dollar lawn care industry by delivering a better customer experience through modern technology, oh and bringing robots to your home - can't forget the robots! Robin is the second company to come out of Dialexa Labs, our internal incubator here at Dialexa - the first company was connected car platform, Vinli, which you can hear more about in episode #03 of Custom Made when I sat down with Vinli CEO Mark Haidar. Here are a couple of facts about the lawn care industry that you may not be aware of: - It is a multi-billion industry in the US, with no clear national, or even regional, lawn care leader - which makes for an interesting business opportunity. - Other than the mowing and lawn care equipment, technology has never been part of the user experience. And speaking of the equipment: - Just one hour of mowing emits as much pollution as 11 hours in your car. - One gas mower spews 87 lbs. of the greenhouse gas CO2, and 54 lbs. of other pollutants into the air every year. - Over 17 million gallons of gas are spilled each year refueling lawn and garden equipment – more oil than was spilled by the Exxon Valdez. All of these points led to Robin, and it’s evolution over the past three years. In 2015 Justin and his co-founder Bart Lomont launched an Uber-for-Lawns business that grew to $5 million in just 2 years. In that short time they completed more than 100,000 lawn care jobs and also experienced every challenge you can imagine, from truck breakdowns, to crew members that don’t show up for work, to unprecedented amounts of rain. Also, because of this growth, they were now also a big contributor to one of the greatest sources of pollution in the United States - dirty, gas-powered lawn equipment. This caused Justin, Bart and their team to pause and look at this problem - there must be a solution they could bring to market. Today Robin is the first of its kind Robotics as a Service offering for your lawn that has competed at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield and Shark Tank. During our conversation, Justin shares the full story of Robin, how they brought custom products and technology to an industry ripe for disruption, and how their business came to an inflection point last year as to which path and offering they wanted to focus their passions and business on. Founder and CEO of EvolveMKD As a business owner, she likes controlling her destiny, who to work with, who to hire, how to invest in the business, and whether to expand. How she fell into a career in public relations, intern boss suggested it. Loves how dynamic working in PR is and how you get to “peek into” and get a behind-the- scenes view of other industries and companies. Likes: You have to continue to learn and grow. You will always be challenged. As technology changes and, how we consume news and media also change, you have to adapt. The importance of balancing the needs of your organization, your clients, and the media. Advice: Early in your career, recommend people get well-rounded, diverse experience, rather than immediately get pigeon-holed (e.g., digital, media, writing press releases, handling budget, developing strategy, etc.). Courses recommended: Take writing classes (e.g., business writing), “If your best-foot- forward includes typos, that’s not good enough.” Accounting (get comfortable with numbers), financials, “You have to have an understanding and appreciation for math.” Frustrations in the PR field: Lack of education among potential clients, who don’t know what PR is now (it’s changed: digital), working with clients to broaden their understanding of what PR encompasses; PR can be used for evil as well as good (current politics); Strong PR people are a voice of reason. The importance of reputation management: “Our job as communications professionals is to gently remind business leaders that you can say whatever you want, but if you don’t have the proof to back it up, you shouldn’t be saying it.” Our job as communication specialists is to ensure the business folks have thought through what they want to say and how they should act. “Good PR people want their company or client to speak the truth; that’s an important part of the job.” Some clients can be short-sighted. “The energy you put out there, the words you put out there, the actions you put out there carry weight and have business implications.” How she advises business leaders: You can’t just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk. Think about what is behind a clever or fun campaign; what will you need to do to reinforce the campaign’s message. Education about how media relations and social work together. What do your leadership teams look like? Do they reflect the consumers you’re trying to reach? “If you don’t interact with the people you’re trying to sell to, how can you have an effective strategy?” Genius PR move: Alyssa Milano’s support for the #MeToo movement on social media to drive real, meaningful discussion. Dumbest thing you’ve seen in PR: United Airlines’ handling of removal of a passenger from a plane and the communications follow-up. How they could have better handled it. When a company gets it wrong, but handles the aftermath well: Alaska Airlines’ prompt, on-target handling of Randi Zuckerberg’s complaint about sexual harassment by a fellow passenger. They took immediate accountability, were public about it, and resolved the issue in a classy way. Just because you make a mistake, doesn’t mean you’re doomed, but you do have to own the problem and proactively solve it. This keeps a mistake from turning into a huge scandal. Most PR crises start as operational issues that are mishandled. What does the future hold for PR and marketing? PR and social media are so intertwined that they will require integrated communication strategies. Communications must be integral in order to truly have a positive reputation. Must-have tools: Cell phone, laptop, Cision, access to social media platforms (Twitter is a great resource for understanding what stories reporters are working on and for following the news, as well as what competitors are doing), Mophie battery packs to keep mobile devices charged. Social media for research: Twitter, private groups on Facebook to stay engaged with other communications professionals and journalists, as well as Instagram. Helping clients avoid the shiny object syndrome: Everyone wants to be on Snapchat, but just because it’s new doesn’t mean it will fit. Unless you’re trying to reach teens and those in their early 20s, it’s probably not right for you. Snapchat is not the tool to sell anti-aging products. Facebook might not be cool anymore, but it might be right depending on who you’re trying to reach and to what effect. “Having great media relationships isn’t enough to be a great PR person, you also need to understand the consumer your client is trying to reach.” That will identify the appropriate media and engagement activities. Current projects: Had a client (Lia Diagnostics) who won TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield at Disrupt 2017 in Berlin with the first major update of the pregnancy test since it was created in the 70’s. Also working with Merz USA, another client, on a partnership with Christie Brinkley. Words of wisdom to new college grads: “Be ready to work.” “Roll up your sleeves and get in the trenches.” You grow and learn by having a lot thrown at you. www.evolvemkd.com Instagram Facebook Instagram: @megankcraig Twitter: @mkdrisco Look for her book coming out in Spring 2018!

Previously, Susan worked at Y Combinator and as the Director of Global Programming at TechCrunch where she focused on major events and the Startup Battlefield.
