“I'm a bit bummed with how it went, but that's why I want to get back into more racing. I know I'm fitter than that showcased, and I want to just have fun with racing, because the Olympics are obviously the pinnacle of our sport, but I think there's so much more aside from that. So I want to have fun with all that, and do what I love, and not feel like because I didn't make this team it was a failure of a year or I'm a failure of an athlete.”   Emily Infeld arrived at the start line for this year's U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials 10K last month with an impressive running resumé. She's a professional runner with the Bowerman Track Club, specializing in the 5K and 10K. She's a 2016 Olympian and a 2015 World Championships bronze medalist. But along the way, Emily has also been plagued with injuries — one major injury, she says, for every year of her professional career. In spite of injuries, surgeries, and setbacks, Emily has persevered and built immeasurable mental toughness along the way. So when she got to Hayward Field, she had one goal: Make another Olympic team. Unfortunately, like all but three of the athletes that day, Emily didn't finish in the top three, and missed out on this year's Team USA. On this episode, she recaps the long road to the Trials, breaks down that hot race in heartbreaking detail, and talks about what's next.   SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones.   What you'll get on this episode: On racing the 1500m for the first time in eight years (4:30) Has running always been fun for Emily? Emily Reagan is a mom of four, Air Force wife, digital marketing consultant and founder of vacrashcourse.com. As a scrappy military wife who moves every two years, Emily has worked in various jobs related to public relations, marketing, sports media relations, journalism and video production. Finally her random skill set paid off as a freelancer digital media “VA” (virtual assistant). Now she helps creative entrepreneurs take their talents online, grow their social media presence and build their sales funnels. She quickly booked out and didn't like turning down clients, so she trained her smart military spouse and mom friends to learn digital media tech skills and take on clients as their own. She calls her Digital Media VA Crash Course graduates “unicorn VAs” because they have all the resourceful qualities, online insight and implementation skills that online business owners are looking to hire first... aka that total magical package. Here's what we covered on the episode: Emily's Background () How emily and I met over a year ago, before the pandemic at dinner through Sage Polaris at the TCC IRL event  The story of how Emily had her dream job, found out she was pregnant, moved again, became a stay at home mom, had a couple more kids, and moved a couple more times A friend of Emily's saw that a blogger needed help with a media kit and asked Emily if she would be interested; Emily said yes and explains that she googled what a media kit was because at that time social media was changing so much and she had been out of the workforce for a 4-5 years   Emily explains how doing this blogger's media kit opened one door after another and introduced her to Google Analytics  What's a Unicorn VA?  Why Emily doesn't like the term VA because to her, she was never just a virtual assistant, she had so many responsibilities and did so many tasks that had a direct impact on her clients and their business  What Emily teaches virtual assistants in her course is, get in, get your feet wet, learn the skills, figure out very quickly what you like, what you're good at, what you don't like and immediately start promoting yourself Promote yourself as a VA by taking on projects because so many businesses will hire in-house or hire overseas   When Emily talks about unicorn VAs, she's talking about that first person you hire when you need help with everything, someone who can help with the administrative tasks, but can also help with the tasks that bog you down weekly When deciding what you should or shouldn't take on as a VA, Emily says know what your zone of genius is and start handing off the things you aren't good at Emily shares that when you have a skill that's marketable, you just need to learn the online way of doing that business and shares a real example of someone in her course  When Emily first started, she kept her head down, said yes to the projects, had no vision but ended up booking out so quickly that she realized she needed to teach her other mom friends what she was doing because there was such a high demand for implementers  How training 8 women to take on and subcontract client work validated for Emily that she could teach people and realized she needed to scale it  How Emily's Business has Changed  The story of how Emily helped a client with a million dollar launch, where she stayed up until 1am rebuilding the client's tech library and realized she didn't want to be doing that anymore  Emily started to scale her course and put herself out there  How quiz funnels were a great way for Emily to keep her hand in the pot, but get out of hourly rates  When Emily pitched her first press kit, she charged $300 and shares she had some experience but didn't really know how to design, so ended up hiring it out  Emily started doing Pinterest for $10/hr and says she loved it because it was stress free  Now, Emily charges $100/hr and her day rates are $1,000 a day  Don't Wait Until It's Too Late If you are in need of a VA, you can go to hire a unicorn.com and fill out a form that they'll post in their student Facebook group Emily's advice is to not wait until it's too late to hire someone to help you; she also says don't get stuck on 1 tech skill you need because someone will be able to learn it  Even if a job listing has job requirements you don't meet, like needing 5 year of experience, Emily says put your name in the hat anyways  Why Emily tells all her students who are new to talk to their friends because they probably know a business owner who you can get work from  Emily tells us about the 4 women on her team and explains each of their roles, and shares that she does her own social media  Connect with Emily on Instagram or listen to her Podcast, Unicorns Unite or fill out a form at hire a unicorn.com if you are in need of a VA    Links mentioned:   Emily's VA Crash Course   Hire a Unicorn    Connect with Emily on Instagram    Listen to Emily's Podcast - Unicorns Unite    Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. When Emily Corwin was a reporter at NHPR covering jails and prisons, she wanted to tell a story about what happens next - a story about parole. Four and half million Americans are on parole right now - about twice the number of people in prisons and jails. Emily met a guy named Josh Lavenets just as he was entering parole - and she tagged along with her microphone as Josh tried to get back on his feet. Many months later, Emily published a story about Josh. It didn’t have a happy ending. But as it turns out, it also wasn’t complete. After we first released Supervision in 2019, Emily got a tip from someone who listened to the podcast. It was from someone who knew Josh, personally. What Emily learned from this person made her reevaluate - not just Josh, not just her reporting, but all the things we can miss when we try to report complicated, messy, human stories. Today, I am happy to be speaking to Emily Gelb, who works at the Ashville Humane Society. Emily has helped expand community-based programs that aim to increase access to pet services in under-served communities. That includes helping people in crisis and finding ways for them to keep their pets at home. Having pets can be expensive. So, as part of my community project in the veterinary social work program, I also try to find helpful resources to assist low-income clients to keep their pets. I know how important animals are in people's lives, so that project was important to me. In this episode, Emily shares many great ideas for how a community can come together to serve their people and pets in need. Stay tuned for more! Like many others in the animal welfare field, Emily just fell into it. While serving in the Peace Corps, she volunteered at a vet clinic in a nearby city and worked with a grassroots dog rescue. When she returned from the Peace Corps, she met the north-east Regional Director with HSUS and ended up interning with her for several months. Through that internship, Emily learned about the range of different activities happening within the animal welfare field that she had no idea about before. When a Safety-Net Coordinator position opened up at Ashville Humane Society, it seemed like a perfect combination for her to get to help pets and people. Listen in today, to hear Emily's story and find out about her great ideas for how communities can come together to provide solutions for people and their pets who are in need.  Show highlights: Emily talks about how she got into the field of animal welfare. Emily shares her interesting and unique experience with the Peace Corps in Ecuador and what she learned there. Emily talks about her Ecuadorian jungle dog, Sisa. Emily explains what led to her work with immigrant communities and people experiencing homelessness. Looking at implicit bias around people giving their pets up to a shelter. Emily explains how she started the Human-Animal Support Certificate program through the program at the University of Tennessee. Emily talks about her community programs at Ashville Humane Society. Addressing the complicated issues around animals going into shelters. What Emily has had to do; to keep people and their animals safe from Covid. The transportation of pets to vets is a barrier in some communities. Emily explains what is getting done to help people with that. Talking about the programs and services that help people in crises with their pets. Emily talks about the AlignCare program and explains what it does and how it is going. Emily discusses all the different programs with which she works. Emily defines what One Health is. Bio: Emily Gelb is the Director of Community Solutions at Asheville Humane Society. An NH native, she has worked at AHS for the last six years, and she has expanded the department to include multiple community-based programs aimed at increasing access to pet services in underserved communities, providing assistance for individuals in crisis, and keeping pets in homes. As a Returned Peace Corps volunteer, she is dedicated to using a participatory approach to community-based programming and is passionate about serving the immigrant community and individuals experiencing homelessness. Emily recently completed her Human-Animal Support certificate through UTK's Veterinary Social Work program and is currently working with UT's AlignCare program as a Veterinary Social Work Coordinator. Today’s Episode Summary: Have you ever realized the power of incorporating new habits in your life? Incorporating small but consistent habits –like, rising early, reading books, listening to a productive conversation, etc- may look like they are not creating any impact on your life instantaneously but they have a huge compound effect on your life. The truth is, these atomic habits have the power to change the course of your life and can lead you toward your goal; success. To unlock your true potential you first need to understand yourself and ask yourself some hard questions – like, what you are good at, what it is that you want in your life, how you can be a better person, etc - and then you need to incorporate new habits that are in alignment with your goal. The biggest hurdle - that anyone faces while inculcating new habits - is the whirlwind of "busy life”. For most people their new habits get lost in the whirlwind of day-to-day life but if you want to reach your goal you really need to prioritize what you need in life over the whirlwind. Now comes the question, how can you develop long lasting habits? For that, you need to understand that consistency is the key. A consistent new habit breaks old patterns and changes neural pathways in your brain that shifts you dramatically. My guest Emily is suggesting that you should maintain a diary to write your goals, ambitions, and your habits to be consistent in your habits. Emily Thomas herself helps entrepreneurs and other people to know their true selves and helps them to remove blockages in their lives that are holding them back to achieve their goals. She is an educator and works on the mindsets to unpack the true power of the people. Emily combined her ability to educate people with her swimwear business and now she is creating an impact on the lives of many people especially women. What You Will Learn from this Episode: In today’s episode, you will learn how significantly new habits can change your life, how you can develop any new habit, how to break the illusion of “being busy” to create a new habit, and why developing new habits is super important for entrepreneurs. My guest Emily is also talking about the impact of deliberately incorporating new habits in her own life and how she is helping other people to unfold their true selves and achieve success. Moreover, you will learn what is the role of intentions to achieve any goal, how to get out of any negative feeling and focus on goals, what is the role of visualization and affirmations in your success, what are some necessary questions that you must ask yourself to elevate yourself, and last but not the least how to get rid of two shackles: 1. Haunting memories of the past 2. Fear of the future. The Episode Timeline: [00:00]– Introduction of podcast and today’s guest. [01:52]- “WHY” of Emily’s life. [05:03]- Energetics of the intention. [07:07]- Breaking the illusion of “being busy” and creating a new habit. [10:11]- How to develop any new habit. [14:57]- Developing new habits are super important especially for entrepreneurs. [17:27]- A common trait among all successful entrepreneurs. [18:20]- How to find the right habit for yourself? [19:15]- The fastest way to get out of any negative feeling. [20:57]- Reality of visualization explained here. [22:17]- Filling holes in your soul can lead you toward your goal. [25:14]- If you put out crappy energy, that’s what you are going to get. [26:14]- Get rid of two shackles: 1. Haunting memories of the past 2. Fear of the future. [29:15]- You cannot control anything except YOURSELF. [30:52]- Ask yourself these necessary and hard questions to elevate yourself. [32:05]- Contact detail of Emily Thomas. [32:42]- What Emily does and how she helps entrepreneurs to unfold their true self. [35:20]- Why Emily decided to be in the swimwear business.  Golden Nuggets from Episode: “A common thread among all successful entrepreneurs is that they worked on their minds, they worked on their thoughts, and they had the habits - they wake up really early, they priorities their day, they don’t say they are too busy in-fact they make time for what’s important, and most of the time they don’t work as hard as a lot of people think that they work because they have done such an incredible job of outsourcing and hiring.” -Emily Thomas “Intention is the very first thing that you should look at when you are deciding to start a business or build a brand or whatever it is that you want to do. If your intention will be on the right side, the results will follow.” –Corey Berrier “Manifestation does not mean you will get everything that you visualize. It may not come in the same form or shape as you visualized it, however, you got to have enough awareness to realize that when things do come your way that’s a by-product of your visualization or manifestation.” –Corey Berrier “The moment that you stop projecting your opinions on people is the moment that you start feeling better.” -Emily Thomas “No matter what you want, you always have the opportunity to get that.” -Emily Thomas “If you put out crappy energy, that’s what you are going to get.” –Corey Berrier "Everything is a lesson. The universe provides us many experiences to teach us and help us elevate and if we are paying attention we elevate faster, if not we don't." -Emily Thomas “Being busy is not necessarily productive.” –Corey Berrier “We all are trying to survive; we all are trying to understand what this game of life is all about.” -Emily Thomas   Emily’s Website & Social Media Handles: Emily’s Brand Website: https://sundariswim.com/ Emily’s Website: http://www.emilykthomas.com/ Instagram:  @itsemilythomas https://www.instagram.com/sundari_swim/   My Website & Social Media Handles: Website: https://salesceo.co/ Facebook:  @Corey Berrier https://www.facebook.com/corey.berrier Instagram:  @coreyberrier https://www.instagram.com/coreyberrier/ @successfullifepodcast https://www.instagram.com/successfullifepodcast/ Twitter: @ successfullifepodcast https://twitter.com/success40324744 Linkedin:  Corey Berrier- Successful Life Podcast https://www.linkedin.com/in/coreysalescoach/ YouTube: Successful Life Podcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrPl4lUyKV7hZxoTksQDsyg/featured

Punk Rock HR Episode 112: So, what does a Canadian millennial entrepreneur know about making a comeback? This week's guest, Emily O'Brien, founder of Comeback Snacks, is going to tell us. In today's episode, Emily opens up about her journey from a sales professional at a global corporation to an entrepreneur, to a convicted felon, and then back again to an entrepreneur. She is someone who is trying to give back, make amends, and help her community.    Many motivational professionals like to say the setback is a setup for the comeback. And often, it sounds over-sensationalized. But in the case of Emily's story, I think that's true. If you'd like to hear about a person who overcame their worst instincts and how they turned it around, I think you're going to love this conversation with Emily O'Brien.   In this episode you'll hear: Emily's story of graduating college with honors, starting her own business, and how things took a left turn when she got arrested. According to the 2018 U.S. Census Bureau, 19.5 million children (more than 1 in 4) live without a father in the home. These children are 47% more likely to grow up in poverty. Sadly, in addition to financial hardships, fatherless children suffer socially, emotionally and academically. Conversely, psych research demonstrates the myriad benefits of a consistent and close father/child relationship—boys evidence fewer behavior problems and girls are less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. Clearly, dads matter! To further explore the importance of fathers—both in the lives of their children and for society at large—I invited Emily Hibard, writer, director, and producer of The Honor Project documentary, to the program. In our conversation, we cover:- The inspiration for a documentary about good guys being great dads!- What Emily has noted when working with women in the sex industry as it pertains to their relationships with their fathers. - The reality that honoring fathers does NOT take away from mothers.- Men and masculinity (spoiler alert: Many are scared to talk about it!)- The different ways fathers show love.- How a man’s definition of masculinity and strength changes as he becomes a husband and father.- The reservations many men feel when stepping into fatherhood—especially if their fathers weren't around when they were young.- The importance of forgiveness—forgiving our father for any “father wound” we may have experienced. Fathers and fatherhood impact us all throughout our lifetimes. Join Emily and I as we discuss the complexities of fatherhood and honor the good guys doing a great job of it! Health Mysteries Solved

The Case:  Emily has 2 autoimmune diseases  She decided to get tested for EBV (Epstein Barr Virus) which her doctor reluctantly did. Her doctor didn’t know how to interpret her results and dismissed her concerns.    What Emily experienced is very common. Conventional doctors often are hesitant to test for EBV and don’t truly know how to read the results. In some cases, they don’t even order the right lab tests.    Emily knew that there was more to the story than her doctor understood. She’d educated herself about EBV and knew that there could be a connection to her 2 autoimmune diseases. And, that her health could be on the line.    The Investigation   I was happy to help Emily better interpret her lab results. As we learned in the first case of suspected EBV, this can be a very complicated, confusing, and time-sensitive diagnosis. There are few people who understand it better than Dr. Kasia Kines, so I brought her back to discuss Emily’s case.    Dr. Kasia, she is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition and the CEO of EBV Educational Institute and Holistic Nutrition Naturally. She is also the author of the Amazon Bestseller: The Epstein-Barr Virus Solution.    Four Markers to Test for EBV Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is complicated. In order to get a full picture of what’s going on with the virus (and determine if it’s latent or new), there are four markers that should be tested. These are tested through blood tests that many labs offer.    The four tests are:  EA IgG (Early Antigen) - this is the most important test and it’s often missed. If your doctor skips this one you won’t know your true EBV status.    EBNA IgG (Epstein Barr Nuclear Antigen) - Indicates a history of infection in non-acute cases. This tells the story of the long term status of the virus.    VCA IgG (Viral capsid antigen) - Indicates an acute infection and will remain perpetually present after initial infection.   VCA IgM (Viral capsid antigen) - Is present in the early phase of an infection and usually disappears.    For what the results mean, see the chart in this week's show notes here: Health Mysteries Solved Podcast - Episode 43   [chart courtesy of Dr. Kines’ website]   The Often Missed EBV Test The EA IgG early antigen test is the most important in getting a big picture of what’s going on right now with the virus. Unfortunately, it is often skipped by doctors. When you have EBV, the virus stays in the body (and we may not be able to ever kill it off entirely). Dr. Kines says that 90 - 95% of the population carries the virus and for many, it doesn’t impact their day-to-day health. Despite this, someone may wake up and feel like they’ve been run over by a truck. Could it be the latent EBV reactivating? The early antigen test is key in determining this - and it must be tested early on (within the first few weeks of the ‘flare-up’ or reactivation). If this test is not done, you could have active EBV and not know it which can be dangerous.    Symptoms of Active EBV A reactivation of EBV can present in a variety of ways. I could seem like the flu with severe fatigue and feeling like you’ve been ‘run over by a truck’. It can also present with cold-like symptoms (sore throat, swollen lymph nodes), or skin rashes, and even gut or digestive issues. Digestive issues could present as constipation, pain, or symptoms related to leaky gut. If you have an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s, it might present as a flare-up of the autoimmune disease. The real challenge with symptoms of EBV is that there are so many potential symptoms that could easily be something else. This is why EBV is often not considered or caught.    How to Decrease Elevated EBV Markers  When there is a flare up, the results on the lab can be very confusing - especially when the level is shown simply as above the maximum lab result. Dr. Kines has a protocol she recommends (and I use it with my patients too). This recommends a restricted diet and a lot of rest. It is all outlined in her book.  It is also important to continue to monitor the markers. However, Dr. Kines points out that everyone’s levels are going to be different. Some will decrease significantly with lifestyle changes while others may take longer. However, how you feel is more important than what the labs say. If you feel good, and your labs are elevated, then consider that a win. She says that it’s easy for people to get demoralized but it’s not all about the numbers.    Other Factors in EBV If someone is following the protocol and not getting results (either in how they feel or their lab results), then there may be something else at play. Two of the most common culprits are heavy metals and molds. For more on heavy metals, listen to episode 024 and for more on mold listen to episode 006. Mold can really block any efforts to decrease EBV marker levels because it devastates the immune cells and system. In cases where mold or heavy metals are an issue on top of elevated EBV markers, the mold and heavy metals must be addressed first.    Negative Reaction to the EBV Protocol Introducing a new protocol of supplements and dietary restrictions can trigger reactions. However, Dr. Hines recommends starting slow with the protocol. If there is a reaction, then you can stop the protocol and add in the different pieces one by one to determine if there is one thing that is causing an issue.  She also recommends, as do I, that you always opt for top-quality supplements to minimize the chance that you’ll have a negative reaction.    EBV Triggers to Avoid One surprising trigger the Dr. Kines mentioned comes from forest fires. This should be on your radar if you live near an area (like California) where there are a lot of forest fires. When fires burn, they give off a toxin called dioxin which has been shown to reactivate EBV. You can also be exposed to this toxin through cigarette smoke (even second-hand), campfires, fireworks, or the burning of debris. She also mentioned that wifi exposure should be closely monitored. This includes your own router but also the wifi used for smart meters that could be penetrating your walls. Additionally, she cautions against blue light exposure (commonly from TV, computer screens, and smartphones). Even your next vacation could expose you to EBV triggers (listen to the episode to find out how). All of these triggers can also reactivate the Epstein-barr virus.    Mystery Solved Let’s take a look at Emily’s labs. Her VCA IgM was negative which made her doctor think the infection was not current, but she had an elevated early antigen. Her doctor completely missed that. While her symptoms weren’t dramatic, she knew something was wrong and the tests proved it.  Because of her sensitive stomach, we opted for the protocol that included the amino acids and antioxidants Dr. Kasia talks about in this episode (Lysine, NAC, Selenium and Zinc). She tired Monolaurin but experienced die-off symptoms so we stuck with the original protocol.    Happy Ending Emily’s digestive issues subsided in about 3 weeks and her energy started to slowly come back over the next 6 weeks.  We retested the markers 12 weeks later and the EA was back to negative. We were also excited to see her VCA IgG went from 400 to 350 and that her autoimmune antibodies went down by 57 points too.  She was thrilled with her progress and will continue with a maintenance protocol and self-care protocol. She’ll test the 4 EBV markers annually to ensure she stays on top of it.    Eliminating Health Mysteries For Emily we were able to find the clue in her lab work that her doctor had missed. This allowed us to get a clear picture of what was going on and help her regain her health. We've all heard the complaints about Catholic dating. Catholics have trouble with the concept of "casual dating" because they (rightly) see dating as oriented toward marriage but (wrongly) put all that weight on a single date. Some are perpetually "discerning" without ever really going anywhere. Women feel like if they don't find a spouse during their four years at a Catholic college, they've missed their chance. Some problems we share with the rest of the world: Men won't ask women out because they're timid or tranquilized by video games and porn. Women often feel they have to put on a persona, whether of a Jane Austen character or a "fierce" feminist (YAAAAS, SLAY QUEEN!). Matchmaker Emily Zanotti, known as the "Catholic Yenta", joins the show to discuss these and other pathologies of Catholic dating, and explains how she went from helping her friends find their spouses to handpicking matches for people across the country. Also interviewed is Eric Niehaus, creator of a soon-to-be-launched events app called Koin, which will allow Catholics to find and plan activities and events with other Catholics in their area. In a world in which Catholics often feel socially isolated, Koin aims to help us foster real-life community.     Many of us have created our own businesses to give us freedom from the lifestyle we were formerly living… But there is a key to creating a business that offers you that freedom- and it's all in our mindset. Today's guest, Emily Williams is a success coach, entrepreneur, and author with a seven-figure business who, at one point, couldn't get a job at Starbucks. Emily Fletcher is the founder of Ziva Meditation, author of the bestselling book Stress Less, Accomplish More and is the leading expert in meditation for performance. The New York Times, The Today Show, Vogue and ABC News have all featured Emily’s work. She’s been named one of the top 100 women in wellness to watch, has taught more than 15,000 students around the world and has spoken on meditation for performance at Apple, Google, Harvard Business School and Barclays Bank. Ziva graduates include Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award winners, as well as NBA players, CEOs, busy parents, entrepreneurs and everyone in between. Her recent accomplishments provide a stark contrast to the stressed out Broadway performer she was ten years ago. During Emily’s career on Broadway, which included roles in Chicago, The Producers & A Chorus Line, she began going gray at 27, suffering from insomnia, underperforming at work and getting sick 4-5 times a year — and believing this was all “normal.” In 2008, Emily was introduced to a powerful practice that cured her insomnia and improved her health on the very first day. She stopped going gray, she stopped getting sick, and started kicking ass at work (and loving it). Her physical and professional transformation was so dramatic that she felt inspired to share it with others. One year later, Emily left Broadway for Rishikesh, India to begin what would become three years of teacher training. She founded Ziva in 2011 opening the NYC studio and created the world’s first online meditation training. After years of teaching thousands of people, Emily realized that meditation was not enough to help her students perform at the top of their personal and professional game. In 2017, Emily developed The Ziva Technique: a powerful trifecta of mindfulness, meditation and manifesting designed to unlock your full potential. The proven benefits of The Ziva Technique include decreased stress, less anxiety, deeper sleep, improved immune function, increased productivity and extraordinary performance. Ziva’s teaching style is entertaining, accessible, easy to adopt, and attracts many top performers from around the globe. In this episode we dive into: The story of Emily’s life on Broadway and the toll that it took on her physical, mental, and emotional health. Her introduction to meditation, how she adopted it into her schedule and the impact it began to have on her life. Emily dives into the trifecta of Ziva meditation and what makes it different, including: mindfulness, meditation, and manifesting. The difference in meditating to get rid of the stress we have now versus meditating to get rid of the stress from the past. Why most people, even when they think they are, and not using the correct approach to manifestation. Learning the balance of being happy and fulfilled with where we currently are while still wanting to push and grow going forward. What Emily calls the “I’ll be happy when” syndrome and how you can start to shift out of this mindset. Her opinion on whether there is a difference between male and female intuition. Emily's biggest mindset shift since starting meditation and how this has led to healthier relationships with people. How Emily creates a sense of balance in her life by fluctuating between busy season and slow seasons and how she maintains the relationship with her husband during both times. Her simple breathing technique that you can utilize right now to help you feel a sense of calm and that can help reduce anxiety. www.brenttieri.com https://zivameditation.com/

“This is my letter to the world That never wrote to me” ― Emily Dickinson This is my letter to the World, That never wrote to me,-- The simple news that Nature told, With tender majesty. Her message is committed To hands I cannot see; For love of her, sweet countrymen, Judge tenderly of me! Ms. Dickinson's poem was first published in 1890. I'm not a poetry expert. Honestly, I don't know that anybody really knows what the poem means, but that opening line has long captured my imagination. Nicole Burns offered this explanation on Prezi: "What Emily means by this is that she wrote a letter to the world but the world doesn't know who she is since she never leaves her home. She also writes about what nature has taught her in hopes to teach other people lessons. In the closing of the poem she asks the readers to not judge her harshly on what she has written." I suppose such writing can mean whatever meaning we ascribe to it. My first thoughts when I saw the opening line I instantly had some notions. They've remained with me through the years. What are you telling the world, even though the world has never asked? What story are you continuing to share with the world, even though the world isn't writing back? What are you saying to the world, even though the world may not be listening - and may, instead, be judging? Permission The Internet empowered us to become our own publishers. Emily had to rely on somebody with a publication to print her creations. The time from creation to publication to consumption in her day could easily be years. I can write these shownotes, record a podcast and hit "Publish" and within nanoseconds it's online. Within seconds, or minutes (at most), the podcast will be in every major podcast directory on the planet. You can do it, too. No permission or talent required.;) But just because we don't need permission doesn't mean the world is going to care. Or pay attention. Or that haters won't hate. Emily and every other person who creates anything, or says anything, or does anything is going to endure harsh judgment. Judgment Is Easy None of us have a tough time with it. And for good reason. We have incomplete knowledge and understanding. We don't know what we don't know. So we fill in the gaps of our knowledge with assumptions and opinions. Finding out - gathering more information, asking more questions, going directly to the person (or the source) - and working hard to understand, that's tough work. And takes too long. Far easier to just complete the story on our own, then close the book. The world never wrote a letter to me. And so I suppose that makes it sort of fair for the world to do as it pleases. Including harsh judgment. Fair doesn't mean it right. Or that it's justified. It just means I understand it. What's Your Letter To The World? What would you like it to be? What do you choose it to be? First, we've got to think about our view of ourselves. Psychologists divide our views into two distinctly separate and different perspectives: 1) you were born as you are and the outcomes of your life are largely beyond your control or 2) you get to choose your outcomes (you have control over your life). Moments of decision make up your life.  Your decisions matter. Your first decision really matters. You must pick one of the two perspectives I just mentioned. Basically, the choice boils down to whether you want to be a victim or in control of your own destiny. So which is it? This sounds like an easy decision, but it's not. It also sounds like it would be reasonable and rational to only pick the second option. Yet, we don't always pick that one because... We've got lots of reasons to feel victimized by others, and by life itself. Everybody suffers. REM sang it correctly, "Everybody hurts...sometimes." Truth is, suffering occurs a lot of the time. That second choice is our only choice IF moving forward is the point.

How the Columbus Foundation Advanced Social Entrepreneurship with Emily Savors

“So it started right at the end of 2008, which was the start of the Great Recession. We became concerned that nonprofits were facing unfavorable year ends with giving decreasing, so we decided to step in... and basically help non-profits generate revenue streams.” Grants for Social Entrepreneurship The Columbus Foundation was founded in 1943, and are celebrating their 75th year next year. Their mission is to assist donors and others in the area to strengthen and improve the community for the benefit of all. Consider them the community’s philanthropic advisors. Social entrepreneurship wasn’t the buzz word in 2008 that it is today. At the time, the idea was to help considerable, established charities such as the Salvation Army. At the time, they thought it would just last a couple of years, but then the recession lingered on. And their understanding of social entrepreneurship continued to evolve. Who are these social entrepreneurs? What Emily found was that it wasn’t just prominent organizations adding revenue streams to support other areas of their charity. Small social enterprises started showing up that were standing on their own. For example, Lettuce Work is a small venture growing lettuce... with the purpose of employing those affected by autism. They seek to break even - it’s not about funding a different part of their charity... the work itself supports its social mission. And then they helped a local furniture bank expand their mission and developer their store called Furniture with a Heart, a shop which helps to fund their mission to provide furniture to those in need. They now have a service called “Downsize with a Heart” that helps elderly and others downsize... providing service across the board, both social services, and moving and sorting, so that individuals can cut down the number of people and organizations someone needs to work with to get help. Not all are small, either.  The Columbus Foundation helped Equitas Health to build a pharmacy -- a health organization which started an HIV/AIDS program but has since expanded far beyond that.  Equitas Health is nation’s largest HIV/AIDS, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) healthcare organizations. With 15 offices in 11 cities, it serves more than 67,000 across the mid-west. What’s in the bigger picture? Now - a social enterprise isn’t the solution for all non-profits or charities. “The odds of a food pantry or homeless shelter figuring out how to do a social enterprise is small,” Emily remarked. And for many charities, they have well-established routes of funding. “The odds of a food pantry or homeless shelter figuring out how to do a social enterprise is small.” But at the same time - the grant process for a non-profit depends on timing and availability. When it comes to a social enterprise, the Emily learned that they don’t operate on a schedule, so that their grants needed to be flexible as well. So they built up a mission that provides support as needed. Because these opportunities tend to have a path to self-sufficiency and are fewer in number, it’s much easier to fund most of the sound opportunities that approach the foundation. Going forward, the Columbus Foundation is planning on launching a service in 2018 for impact investing, so they can make loans to social enterprises or non-profits that can pay back... to help with cash flow for organizations that have a route to earning money. It was a real delight hearing about the work that Emily Savors does at the Columbus Foundation. It’s an exciting time for the city of Columbus, because the social entrepreneurship community is small enough that people know each other, and this has a huge benefit for people working together. And the Columbus Foundation is one of the pillars that helps serve an essential need in helping these businesses grow. When I dreamed up my podcast over a year ago,I made a list of all of the guests I really wanted to have on the show and today's guest is one of the women who graced the top 5 on that very list! This episode is one of my favorite this year and will give you a glimpse into the life and mind of the one and only Emily Ley. Emily's energy is contagious and what she has done inside her company over the last 10 years is exceptional. Emily dreamed up the Simplified Planner and her boutique lifestyle brand, Emily Ley in order to create tools that help women to be more intentional and organized in their daily lives. Her work has been featured by Martha Stewart, Good Housekeeping, Glamour, Forbes, and so much more. She believes everyday life doesn't have to be ordinary and that joy is truly found in the journey. Her mission is to inspire women of all ages to build joy and simplicity into their lives through intentional choices, purposeful plans and playful experiences. Over the last decade, Emily has built an empire all the while raising 3 babies, two of which are twins, and stayed true to herself with life-giving relationships and passions. It was such an honor to speak with Emily and to cover all things simplicity, spirituality and even mommy guilt in this episode. I know you are going to get so much from this conversation. Enjoy! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How Emily gave herself grace to ebb and flow with life's seasons How to find your true voice through distractions and comparison Why saying yes to every opportunity may be your biggest mistake The biggest mistake Emily made early on in her business and how she pivoted to thrive through the adversity. How spirituality underlies everything Emily does in her life and business What Emily does to teach her children to be still How to deal with mommy guilt and decide what's non-negotiable How to make and keep meaningful relationships in a busy life and business What inspired Emily's latest book on creating a more simplified life WHAT I ASK: How did you learn to tap into your true voice? What is the most educational mistake you've made so far? How does spirituality weave into what you've created? SOUL SHIFTING QUOTES: “You learn who you are by making a lot of mistakes.” “I've always looked at life and said, ‘Do I have to do it this way?'” “It's hard to find real joy when we're so bogged down by all the things.” DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: www.emilyley.com/

Our market is very seller driven because there is not enough housing to meet the demand. So even in a down market, we are still up. The other thing that is interesting is that despite the market being a seller's market, more than 80% of houses here are staged. Because how competitive it is here, the pricing strategies and approach are different than most markets in the rest of the country. On today's show we talked a lot about marketing, pricing strategies, timing, communication and what happens in a competitive market. On today's show, we discussed: How Emily convinced her parents to buy a house when she was 16 How Emily transitioned from the food and wine industry into real estate The importance of understanding marketing in real estate The real estate market in San Francisco Working with out-of-town buyers As of June 2017, $1.5M is the medium home price in the city of San Francisco What drives most real estate market The summer real estate market How supply and demand affects the market The unique pricing strategy in San Francisco Buyers and sellers trying to time the market What Emily does for her clients as their real estate agent Common misconceptions home sellers have Having emotional attachment to the home How your precious collection or collectible can derail the sale Timing the process for the sale Setting an offer date The danger of buyers getting used to very high property prices How buyers and sellers are using technology for their sales nowadays How tech companies have changed the way we work Sellers using Zillow How to really know how much your home is worth Budget for updating the home for the sale Why you shouldn't paint your own house (for selling) Should you remodel before you sell?
