This is nutty. I became an instant mom overnight. It was just me and my dogs and then I met my husband and he had 2 boys. One of them is on the Autism Spectrum. I was working for myself and definitely treating it as a hobby. Well, his job took him out of state on a regular basis. We decided we wanted to homeschool so I went from no kids to 2 kids home full time while my husband was gone 2-4 weeks at a time. I really had to learn to say no to things and give myself some grace for my own sanity. Now, I can homeschool, manage the dogs, the therapies, and two businesses at once because I set some hard boundaries on my time. My guest in this episode is Ashley Ahearn. Ashley is an award winning public radio and podcast journalist. She recently created and published the critically acclaimed podcast series called “Grouse”. Grouse explores life in rural America through the lens of the controversial Greater Sage-Grouse. The series also delves into Ashley's own unique journey to sagebrush country, and tackles many of the competing interests that threaten the grouse. You may also know Ashley from her work on the podcast “Terrestrial” - a show that explored personal choices in the face of climate change, and her many varied works for PRI and NPR. She currently runs Ahearn Productions, where she freelances for NPR and other clients, creates original shows such as Grouse, and helps others create quality podcasts. In this episode we speak extensively about Grouse and the art of developing and telling nuanced stories. We get into the weeds of the production process, including how to gain the trust of people who may be skeptical and initially unwilling to share their stories. We also discuss how to tell a story that stays true to multiple perspectives, and how to engage and connect people using audio as a format. We also talk about Ashley's journey from NPR to freelance productions and consultations. We have a great discussion about loaded terms such as "environmentalist", and what fairness and bias means in the world of journalism.Ashley also gives a sneak peek into her next podcast series.I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion and learned a lot of useful nuggets to improve my ability to engage and communicate environmental stories, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.Find Ashley @ashleyreports on Instagram and @aahearn on Twitter, or on her website at https://www.ahearnproductions.com.FULL SHOW NOTES at http://podcast.naturesarchive.comReferences from the show:People and OrganizationsAshley Ahearn - creator of the Grouse series.Liza Yeager - audio producer and sound designer for GrouseMichael Schroeder - Greater Sage-Grouse expert featured extensively in the Grouse seriesWhitney Henry-Lester - Ashley's editor for GrouseBooks and Other ThingsBundyville - podcast series from OPB that Ashley enjoyedDeath, Sex, and Money - Anna Sale's podcast that Ashley enjoysGrouse - The podcast series Ashley created, which led me to reach out to her for this interviewHome of the Brave - another podcast Ashley likes, by Scott Carrier

Edified: Insights for LDS WomenEpisode 31, "The Healing Power of Jesus Christ" with Guest, Ashley LoganSeason 213 DEC 2020 Air DateIn this week's episode we are spotlighting Sister Franco's talk, "The Healing Power of Jesus Christ." To help me, I invited my daughter-in-law, Ashley Logan, to share some of her insights from Sister Franco's message. Ashley is a native Texan who graduated from Brigham Young University in 2016 with a degree in Landscape Management. She works for Intermountain Plantings as a Project Coordinator and Estimater. She & Andrew met while attending BYU and were married in 2012. Ashley and Andrew lost their daughter, Joy, to a condition known as Trisomy 18. It was a heartbreaking time for our family. Through it all, I observed how Ashley and Andrew gained strength through the enabling power of Christ's Atonement. Their faith has been such an inspiration to me. In 2019, Andrew and Ashley welcomed a healthy boy into their family, and he has just been a true light and blessing to us all. Ashley understands what it means to be broken--like the piano in Sister Franco’s talk. And she understands the enabling and enobling power of Christ’s atonement--the power that lifts us in times of sorrow and grief, heals us in our brokenness, and brings light and comfort to our dark and scary places.I asked Ashley to share how the healing power of Jesus Christ has helped her handle the grief of losing her daughter. I know all who listen to this episode will be moved by Ashley's heartfelt testimony and her witness of the saving grace of our Savior. In this episode of the Assault Forward podcast we discuss the importance of taking R&R in the military and how that translates to why you should use those hard earned Vacation Days in the civilian world. Setting an example as leaders and why your team members will come back as better employees for having taken the time away from the business. If you think you're too critical to the business to take time away - that's a real problem as well and we discuss why you should prepare your succession plan to ensure continuity of operations, just like how the chain of command works in the military. My guest this week is Ashley James. Ashley actually had me on her podcast a few weeks ago.  We had planned to focus on anxiety in this episode, which we did spend a good bit of time talking about. But we also talked a lot about general health and nutrition, and the important role of diet in our physical and mental health. This is a topic that’s gotten a lot more attention in recent years. For some reason it was quite controversial for a long time to suggest that what we put in our mouths could affect our minds and spirits, and could contribute to conditions like anxiety and depression. But now that the research studies are being done, we’re starting to realize how important diet can be—not just for our physical health, but for our overall well-being. We also talked a lot about the body’s stress response and the release of cortisol through the HPA axis, and of adrenaline through our sympathetic nervous system (our body’s fight-or-flight stress system). And in the second half of our discussion, Ashley offers a simple technique that can lower anxiety and turn down the stress response. Other topics we explored included: The many chronic conditions Ashley recovered from Taking responsibility for our own health The tendency to move toward what we’re focused on, even if it’s what we don’t want Dr. Peter D'adamo's bestselling book Eat Right for Your Blood Type (affiliate link) The premise of eating in line with our genetic history What adrenal fatigue is The three phases of the stress response: Alarm, Resistance, Exhaustion The benefits Ashley found from eating all organic food How we often beat ourselves up for our health struggles The body’s ability to heal itself, given the right conditions What triggers anxiety The role of diet in anxiety The focus of anxiety on what we don’t want to happen in the future The importance of magnesium for healthy physiological processes A cognitive technique for lowering anxiety Focusing on what we want vs. what we don’t want How we’re not fully ourselves in stress mode How the body diverts resources for survival in times of stress The possible danger in trying to get rid of anxiety What to do if anxiety reduction techniques don’t work Ashley James is a master practitioner and trainer of neurolinguistics programming (NLP), and also practices time line therapy, hypnosis, and coaching. As a reiki master, she has taught healers how to incorporate energy work into their practice. Ashley hosts the Learn True Health podcast, which connects listeners with experts, naturopaths, and holistic health practitioners. As it turned out, she ended up loving homeschooling her kids full time; and with the current pandemic, that is not going to change anytime soon. What we realized from speaking with Ashley is how homeschooling and choosing careers share so much in common. Instead of giving her children spoon-fed information, she lets them explore and learn to find the answers on their own. Having a self-directed curriculum allows them to think independently and this is not at all different from the mindset necessary for a successful career - which has evolved from linear paths in the past, to the dynamic “work in progress” of today. ✍︎✍︎✍︎We have more interviews on our podcast! Episode 13: Sharing Your Story in a Book with Ashley Cox Today on the show Jodi interviews Ashley Cox, author of Transform Your Stories (2019). Here are some highlights: Jodi and Ashley talked about the organic manner in which Ashley came to write a book to serve her business. She was struck by a line in a true crime podcast she was listening to one day and wrote a blog post about it. The feedback was so strong that Ashley felt like she could write more, and one blog post turned into a four-post series. After even more feedback, much of which included things like “I could read a whole book on this topic!” Ashley realized she had a book topic on her hands. Ashley wasn’t actively brainstorming topics, thinking that she was going to write a book. The process was natural and organic. Ashley shared that her favorite part of the writing/publishing process was the esoteric experience of thinking about her readers. She thought about individual women holding the book and thinking about the impact her words would have on those people she may never meet or work with one-on-one. Ashley reflected that the book writing process was experiential for her and natural because she’s walked the path her readers are walking or have walked. She’s the expert guiding the reader through the book but also walking alongside them as someone who’s struggled with toxic stories and how they’ve affected her leadership roles. As someone who doesn’t love doing the nitty-gritty, detail/line-by-line work, Ashley’s least favorite part of the process was reading her own words over and over (and over and over). She noted that she doesn’t thrive doing that type of work but keeping her readers in mind helped her power through the revision stage as she finished her book. In the six weeks or so (at the time of recording) since Ashley’s book launched, she shared that so many fun things have happened already: Holding the book in her hands was such a thrilling experience, and a future reader from New Zealand connected with her on Instagram and noted that she had purchased the book, and knowing that the book had gone international inspired Ashley. She’s also benefited from podcast and speaking opportunities, as well as events at local establishments in her community. Ashley noted that the book gives her “something to lead with” when introducing herself to people. Ashley offered two pieces of advice for other author-entrepreneurs: Hire someone to help you (and the earlier the better), because the book writing and publishing process is so involved. And take advantage of the wonderful community of existing author-entrepreneurs. Reach out to them and ask for advice and feedback. Ashley shared that she’s typically reading more than one book, and now is no exception. She’s currently reading two books, one personal development and one for leisure: A Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi and The Boiling Season by Christopher Hebert. First, we were lucky enough to interview the badass and talented actress and cosplayer, Ashley Mary Nunes to discuss her acting journey from acting in homemade horror films to eventually becoming a Scream Queen in such horror classics as All Through The House. Then through Ashley, we were able to sit down and discuss another awesome journey with her brother, Horror-film writer and director, Todd Nunes! With Todd we tracked his foray into the genre from creating horror-inspired plays at school to ultimately hitting the festival circuits with his original stories. After these fantastic podcast interviews, we started one of our first Hollywood Hustle traditions: our Annual #HalloweenHustle Horror Film Commentary episodes every Halloween with Team Hustle and Team Nunes! Ashley Cantley, Feng Shui expert, manifester, mama bear Feng Shui for Health: Ashley Cantley was drawn to this ancient Chinese practice when faced with healing from a toxic relationship. Similarly, I only started putting attention on my living space when I was sick and doing some healing of my own.  Most people who have a current #lifegoal of “heal from illness” are in bed, and, in that case, shouldn’t the bedroom feel like a sanctuary?  I believe that my living space is a reflection of how I am in the world, and I committed to making my whole home a giant vision board: Everything in it should make me feel good! Essentially, how to feng shui for health. That being said, I knew very little about the actual art and science of Feng Shui, so I was pretty pumped to get Ashley on and talk about practical suggestions to use Feng Shui for health and healing. How is Feng Shui an extension of holistic health? And how does it enhance other self-care practices? How can we make small changes in our home to enhance our health? Listen in here! I’ve tried to manage the excess so many times, manually deleting thousands of emails, making folders, and unsubscribing to list but it always goes out of control again. When I got sick, I learned that I needed to have an organized, uncluttered life. I need to utilize every tool available to me to lessen my daily stress. However, Being a busy entrpeuner, it’s hard to keep a stress free email inbox. It can be overwhelming, in fact it gave me anxiety just to open my email. I desperately wanted a clear screen so I could streamline, focus on what was important and deal with what wasn’t important later. SaneBox gave me exactly that. I no longer waste my precious time and energy deleting unnecessary emails or being overwhelmed by a packed screen. Not to mention that the less I have distracting me, the more productive I am. When I have time, I can open the folders that SaneBox effectively manages for me and read the news and unimportant emails and read newsletters I’m interested in. Hello listeners, we are back another week and this time we had a conversation with Ashley Nell Tipton. You may have heard of Ashley when she made history after becoming the first designer to win Project Runway with a final collection designed for plus-size women. Ashley was born and raised in San Diego, California. The youngest of four children she had an early passion for fashion. Ashley learned to sew on her grandmother’s sewing machine when she was just seven years old. One of her goals is to help full figured women feel good in what they wear and she hopes to be “THE” Full Fashion Designer. She understands what plus women want and would like to give curvy girls a chance to show their style with chic edginess. Ashley says: “I pictured my muse roaming the streets of Paris unabashed and feeling confident in their stride while wearing designs that are not seen in full figure fashions today. The finished line is filled with bold colors and finesse… just like me!” This one is a lengthy one, Ashley truly dives deep into her story and shares the criticism she's had to face from her family to people in social media, while creating her brand and also having so many women look up to her for being the first contestant to ever create a plus size women collection in Project Runway. 22: Simple Self Care for Therapists

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2016 45:49

elcome! My guest today is Ashley Davis Bush, LICSW. Ashley is a psychotherapist in private practice in southern New Hampshire with over 25 years’ experience. She has written six self-help books, including Transcending Loss and Simple Self-Care for Therapists. She is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and has some great tips to share with us today about increasing our self-care. Join us! What you’ll hear in this episode: Ashley loves her work and counts it a privilege to be part of peoples’ lives. Her private practice is in her home, and it’s “a fun job, watching life unfold in front of you.” Even the simple choice of working from home can be a self-care choice. Ashley’s work focuses on grief, couples, and anxiety, but self-care is a common thread that is woven into her work with all clients. Ashley says that much of her practice patterns itself after her books. Her most recent book introduces the idea of “micro self-care.” “Macro self-care”practices are the big things that we normally think of regarding self-care, but micro practices are short, simple things that can be done in 1-2 minutes. Ashley focuses on self-care to avoid burnout, which she categorizes as “little b” and “BIG B” types of burnout. “little b” burnout is when you are exhausted at the end of the day or week. You may need a good night’s rest or a few days off to regenerate and recover. “BIG B” burnout is when you need to leave the field because you can’t take it anymore. Ashley addresses “vicarious trauma,” in that ALL therapists do some sort of trauma work. Personal and professional experience can cloud the lens with which we see the world, but life’s pains are a constant trauma. Ashley explains self-care vs. self-violence: when you don’t take care of yourself, then you’re doing harm (violence) to yourself. Mindfulness leads to grounding, bringing us into this moment right now. Ashley shares her Tibetan bell practice to help bring clients into mindfulness. She recommends using micro self-care practices at the beginning, middle, and end of your day. Ashley’s book lists 40-50 suggestions as to how to scale down macro self-care practices into small micro practices. Making the transformation from macro to micro self-care practices requires thinking creatively, but shouldn’t be overwhelming. Neuroplasticity is the science that show the brain can change in response to repetitive behaviors. You can rewire your brain to be more peaceful! When your brain is rewired, then your default setting comes to a place of gratitude and feeling good. Ashley’s three takeaways: Have a basic plan for 3 micro self-care practices each day. Sleep 8-9 hours each night so you aren’t tired during the day. Prioritize self-care, and you’ll soon realize that you can’t live without it! Be aware of the seasons of life, but regardless of the season, you can fit in micro self-care every day! Find Ashley at www.ashleydavisbush.com.
