She prides herself in helping active women transform their mindsets and beliefs around food, find their true selves, and empower them to ignite their true athletic potential. Her passion stems from my struggles with disordered eating and multiple health battles during my teens, such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autoimmunity, and bulimia. In her twenties, from overactivity and disordered eating patterns known as orthorexia, she developed the Female Athlete Triad, a complex stemming from low energy intake and leading to a loss of menses and decreased bone density.  All these significantly impacted on her athletic career and could have all been avoided.    She decided to enroll in her Master of Nutrition program so that her eyes were open to other avenues such as Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture, Nutrition, Supplementation, Food Sensitivity Testing, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Mindset Reformation. By incorporating these principles, entering a 12-step program known as Celebrate Recovery, and reshaping her relationship with food and herself; she was able to break the chains of disordered eating and regain her athletic ability back. Today, she has now found a deep passion for endurance sports and has an Ironman 70.3 set in her future endeavors.   Her goal is to get to the root cause of the problem spiritually, emotionally, and physically to create new foundations, leading these women to transformation and success in their athletic careers and their lives.  It is an incredibly individualized approach that captures their strengths and uses them to "break the cycle."

The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is created by Rupa Health, the best way to order, track & manage results from 30+ lab companies in one place for free. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Greer McGuinness, Clinical Lab Educator at Vibrant Wellness and Founder of Biomedical Healing For Kids. In this episode, Greer McGuinness answers questions about toxins and the impact of toxic exposures on our health. With more than fifteen years of experience in the medical field, Greer McGuinness is a biomedical clinician. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Food Science from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Master's degree in Science from Central Michigan University. Additionally, she is a Certified Leap Therapist, having helped many individuals with food allergies and intolerances. Learn more about toxins by checking out the key takeaways of this episode or the transcript below. Key Takeaways: Uncovering toxin exposure People are exposed to over 700,000 toxins daily, mostly man-made chemicals such as plastics, parabens, and heavy metals. Many underestimate the impact of small doses of chemicals. The "dose makes the poison" concept is not applicable when considering multiple toxins. Our current generation is more toxic than ever, and children have a shorter life expectancy than previous generations due to chemical exposure. Toxin exposure symptoms in adults Toxic exposure in adults can cause various symptoms, including weight gain, autoimmune issues, reproductive issues, infertility, fatigue, chronic fatigue, gut and liver issues, and hormonal imbalances, which can lead to endometriosis. Moreover, toxins act like estrogen in the body, and this can lead to symptoms even when hormone levels appear normal. Endocrine disruptors such as plastics, microplastics, parabens, and other products that women use daily can bioaccumulate in the body and throw off its balance. Decrease your toxic load While the body naturally detoxes, the toxic load in our society is much higher than it has been in the past. This can lead to an overload on the liver which can cause bioaccumulation of toxins. To help with this, Greer created the Rebalance Method, which focuses on improving bile and pancreatic lactase flow. It's also important to consider the lymphatic system; physical exercise is the best way to detox it. The four pillars of detoxification Reducing exposure to toxins starts with testing first, followed by applying the four pillars of reducing toxin exposure. These include getting water filtration systems, incorporating organic food, improving air quality, and getting good-quality personal care products. For more information, consult the Toxin-Free Living Guide. Investigating PFAS toxins in everyday items PFAS are called the "forever chemicals" because scientists don't know how to break them down. They can be found in everyday items such as panties, yoga pants, waterproof jackets, shoes, and sports bras. As a result, 99% of people in the United States have PFAS toxins in their systems. Also, check out Greer's recommended lab testing: Micronutrient testing, Vibrant's Total Tox Burden test, and PFAS testing. Whether it's Graves', Hashimoto's, or multiple sclerosis, when you have an autoimmune condition, your body suffers from chronic inflammation. Our food supply has many inflammatory triggers, and everybody has a unique tolerance threshold regarding how many toxins they can manage while maintaining a healthy appearance. Once you pass that threshold, you enter into autoimmunity, and it takes a lot of sustained effort to bring yourself back below that threshold.Today I'm joined by naturopath and author Elizabeth Yarnell to talk about her approach to anti-inflammatory strategies. Since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, Elizabeth Yarnell has been on a mission to redefine MS and autoimmunity naturally as a traditional naturopath and Certified LEAP Therapist. She has worked with hundreds of MS and other autoimmune sufferers in her nationwide clinic, using unique, personalized non-pharmaceutical therapies to empower them to reclaim their health. In this conversation, Elizabeth and I dive into the connection between inflammation and autoimmunity, why most of us could benefit from reducing our inflammatory triggers, food sensitivities and the differences between IgG and MRT testing, Elizabeth's natural approach to treating parasite infections, and more. Find those at /top-10-podcasts-2022 Starting with number 10 and working our way up, here are your Top 10 podcasts 2022 for the Flipping 50 show.  #10 How chronic inflammation can interfere with your best life after 50! Since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, Elizabeth Yarnell has been studying how to manage autoimmunity naturally as a traditional naturopath and Certified LEAP Therapist. She's worked with hundreds of MS and other autoimmune sufferers in her nationwide clinic using unique, personalized natural therapies to empower them to reclaim their health. She's a TEDx speaker, award-winning author whose cookbook has sold more than 60,000 copies, a patented inventor, and has been featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS as well as in Good Housekeeping, Health, Martha Stewart Living Radio, and many other outlets. https://www.flippingfifty.com/chronic-inflammation/ #9 How to Eat for Strength Training for Women One of the hardest lessons for women to learn is that you have to eat for strength training to work. The first inclination is to “eat less and exercise more.” Of course, it's been the message on social and unfortunately, even from the fitness industry, for years. This episode and my guest will dispel those age-old myths. We're going to look at the needs of women over 40, and discuss what lifting heavy means. We'll share what she recommends for lifting frequency for women over 40 and explore optimal training as well as how you know you're lifting the right weight. https://www.flippingfifty.com/eat-for-strength-training/ #8 Intermittent Fasting for Women | Health & Wellness | When Yes When No This episode is all about Intermittent fasting for women in midlife. I've got one of the most globally recognized experts with me talking about the what's the whys and the whens… as well as the when not to's.  If you've dabbled, you've shunned it, you've been tempted… chances are you still have some questions. We'll answer many here in our discussion.  https://www.flippingfifty.com/intermittent-fasting-for-women/ #7 Why Menopause Weight loss is So Hard and How Your Brain is Taking Over Weight loss is so hard! I've heard that a million times. But why can't we crack that code? Well, my guest today is sharing how your brain has hi-jacked your weight-loss wishes and what's working against you. She's also got a solution. And trust me you do not want to miss it when I ask her why she's doing “this.”  Her story is a must-hear. If you think no one understands your relationship with food or disordered eating, stay right here.  Spoiler alert – I'll give you two take-aways from this episode: Planning ahead is a must.  Automate eating. And that's just because there's so much more juicy content inside.  If you've said it, weight loss is so hard, this is for you.  https://www.flippingfifty.com/weight-loss-is-so-hard/ #6 The Missing Link in Weight Loss for Women Over 50 Weight loss for women over 50 is illusive. Right? What you used to do doesn't work anymore. They talk of inflammation, and yet you don't feel badly when you eat the foods they suggest cause it. If you're feeling torn between what you're reading, hearing, and old school lessons or lifelong habits, this may help you understand the connection between gut health and weight loss for women over 50.  My guest is a bestie and an expert, what could be better, right? He's everywhere you've seen experts… Dr. Oz, Mind body green, a guest on dozens of popular podcasts. I've had the good fortune to know not only Dr. Pedre but to dine next to the person he is and I'll just say this, you'll want to know him too. (and salsa with him if he will) https://www.flippingfifty.com/weight-loss-for-women/ You've got endurance! You're halfway through this list of top 10 podcasts 2022! Hang in there! I'd love to know… have you listened to them already and would these have been YOUR vote too?  A little inside intel - we've had this convo behind the scenes that in fairness to my recent guests and podcast episodes we need to do this in June too for the past 12 months. We did weight some of our recent episodes in such a way that we didn't ignore those that just haven't gotten enough time to have downloads yet. Even so.. Episodes from last week, just won't have had the chance to prove themselves yet!!  OKAY.. enough halftime show, on with the top 10 podcasts 2022 edition!!  #5 Fat Loss in Menopause: It's Not What You Think If you spend half a minute on social media, you could be led to believe fat gain in menopause is normal and fat loss in menopause is hard and requires extremes. If you want to invest a few minutes here, I'm going to do the best I can to convince you otherwise.  You might also be here and it's not that you gained weight in menopause, but you were already carrying it. But now a few more pounds have made it too unbearable. You're not feeling like yourself and don't like the look of your future. This episode explains the interaction of your hormones on your fat loss efforts. Whether it's isolated to belly fat for you or it's an overall inflammatory response meaning you carry extra weight throughout your body, this is for you! https://www.flippingfifty.com/fat-loss/ #4 Perfection Detox for the Mindset of Midlife Success Need a perfection detox? Or have you shed that skin already? No matter where you are, this message resonates with women over 50. Even younger women are tired of being tired in pursuit of something they know they can never have, be, or enjoy.  In this interview episode, my guest shares her own journey through perfection detox. I think you'll be able to relate. We've talked liver detox, electronic and digital detox, so why not perfection detox? This interview with fitness icon Petra Kolber was so much fun. A sucker for an accent it was awesome for me, and she's a lovely person as much as she is talented and living the follow-your-dreams not your same-old-road advice we often hear but may be reluctant to do.  https://www.flippingfifty.com/perfection-detox/ #3 You Ask Libido and Hormone Balance Questions: Dr John Gray Answers Libido and hormone balance questions were at the top of the list for our community members.  Today you want to plan a long hike. Take us with you. Then share it with a friend and listen together after they listen. If you're listening for yourself, you're still going to want to hit replay.  What I love as much as anything about this episode is that Dr John Gray became popular in the 80's and 90's. Today, in 2022, he got lit up during this episode. He is still as passionate and purposeful about what he is doing as ever. My wish for myself and for you is that we all have that kind of purpose-driven passion in our lives for as long as possible.  If you're familiar with the Mars and Venus books you'll love this. If you're not, you'll want to read them! https://www.flippingfifty.com/libido-and-hormone-balance/ #2 Questions About Gaining Muscle and Strength for Women Over 50  Recently I shared a study about the loss of muscle (sarcopenia) during menopause and since, questions about gaining muscle and strength over 50 have been pouring in. In this Q and A episode I'm answering them. They're split, about half are about exercise and the other half are about the protein that you seem to know you need. There's confusion about how to juggle intermittent fasting, getting enough protein, and whether fed or fasted exercise is best for gaining lean muscle. I'll try to answer many of your questions. I by no means think this is a one-and-done episode that will eliminate any questions! https://www.flippingfifty.com/gaining-muscle-and-strength/ #1 More Strength, Less Cardio in Menopause & Beyond  More strength and less cardio in menopause is not an easy pill to swallow for many of you listeners. Until you do. Until it feels good to feel good and you realize that being tired all the time isn't necessary, required, or even going to work to optimize your weight and body composition.  This interview episode with Dr. Stacy Sims will help you understand the physiology behind the need for adequate muscle stimulus. You'll hear what that is, and what it isn't.  Stacy is renowned for her tagline, Women Aren't Small Men. We're singing the same song, as we at Flipping 50 tell you, you're not a man, a mouse, or a young woman - not even younger you - so exercising for the hormones you do have now will make all the difference to your results now and those you want for decades.  Many thanks to Dr Stacy Sims not only for this interview episode, but for the work she's doing to help women grow older stronger.  https://www.flippingfifty.com/less-cardio-in-menopause/ There you have it, our Top 10 Podcasts 2022 edition! Institute's 16-Week Autoimmune Reset Experience guides you in eliminating these and other hidden factors, so you can restore your health, recover your life, and reinvent your future.   Listen in to learn more!   Talking Points: You may not even realize that what you have is an autoimmune condition If you have any chronic health challenges, you might have autoimmunity, becuase it typically takes years to be formally diagnosed Autoimmunity is caused by chronic inflammation and dysfunction of the immune system. That is in turn caused by hidden factors that are missed or dismissed by conventional methods. The role of the Industrial Revolution in the development of Autoimmune Conditions Types of autoimmune conditions include: Diabetes Type 1 Hashimoto's  Graves Multiple Sclerosis Celiac Psoriasis  Eczema Pernicious Anemia Inflammatory Bowel Disease Rheumatoid Arthritis Lupus Alopecia And many more These autoimmune conditions are caused by the same root as classic allergies, food sensitivities, and asthma.  Once you have one of these conditions, you're prone to others… because they're all caused by these same hidden factors. In fact, they're essentially the same condition… a manifestation of the immune system attacking a particular part of the body Often, people start out with bowel problems before progressing to other complications Factor #1: Diet is a big factor in the immune response and how it is triggered – even eating foods that are considered healthy superfoods [Side note: inflammation can cause you to hold onto weight so you could be doing everything right and still not lose weight] Factor #2: Stress directly causes autoimmune conditions. It depresses your immune system and spikes inflammation through the stress hormone, cortisol. Your brain and body equate stress with the fight for survival and are concerned with keeping you alive in the moment, not whether you get sick or die later on. Factor #3: Underlying Parasitic Infections are a very commone and highly overlooked cause of inflammation, contributing to autoimmune disorders.  -- Listen, rate, and subscribe! When do you avoid yourself? You know- the times when you know something isn't a good idea but you find yourself going through the motions anyway? That last shot? That person? This week, Meg & Kylie bring another dual episode to you talking about the foundational aspect of food! Today's guest is our very own Kylie Fagnano, Registered Dietitian, trained as an Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certified Practitioner, as well as a Certified Leap Therapist. She earned her BS in Psychology and Master's in Nutrition in Scranton, PA. Her private practice, Strata Nutrition, was born out of her little apartment in Portland, Maine! A long time sufferer of digestive issues and autoimmune disease herself, Kylie asks and expects of her clients the very same work that she did for herself. She *literally* understands what it feels like, what other feelings the process can bring up and how lonely and hopeless it can seem sometimes. You can connect with Kylie on IG @the.gut.therapist and online at www.stratanutrition.com TLDL takeaways: 1) Food is a set of instructions for our bodies; and different foods can give different instructions to different people 2) There are different layers to gut healing: some people might just need a gentle diet spruce up meaning eating more foods in their most whole form and some may need to actually go through an elimination diet. The starting point looks different for everyone. Two extreme examples might be: "Yeah I guess I really haven't looked at my diet I can see myself starting there" vs "I have been to 17 different doctors and nothing has helped" 3) Whichever of the following action steps you choose to move forward with- you MUST do it at 100%; otherwise you may end up more frustrated and may not get accurate information 4) Food sensitivities can cause symptoms in a person for up to 72 hours after eating the food. This is part of what makes finding patterns between foods and symptoms so hard 5) A helpful place to start could be tracking your food, digestive symptoms, mood & emotions and see if you can start to identify any patterns on your own 6) Just because we have to eat to survive does *NOT* mean you should already know how to eat for your body 7) Some examples of symptoms of food sensitivities and/or if you might have gut issues: neurological (anxiety, depression, brain fog, exhaustion, ADD/ADHD), skin issues (acne, eczema, psoriasis, ketosis pilaris), tinnitus (ear ringing), need to clear your throat, joint pain, digestive (heartburn, bloating, constipation, diarrhea) 8) Food is RARELY the cause of an illness or set of symptoms, and there are certain exceptions, but typically food is a trigger and becomes part of the problem but is rarely the root cause 9) Food with SIMPLE ingredients may be the single best thing someone can do for their gut! Tune in to the full episode to learn what exactly that means! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curious-women/support

I'm happy to welcome Lily Nichols back to the show! If you didn't get a chance to tune into our first episode together, make sure to go back to episode 16 and listen in. In our previous episode, Lily and I talked about Gestational diabetes and how to address it through a real food diet instead of relying on medication. Lily is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, a Certified Diabetes Educator, a Certified LEAP Therapist, and a Certified Pilates Instructor. But today we're shifting the focus to an entirely different topic! In today's episode, we are delving into Lily's fitness background as a certified Pilates instructor and talking all about exercise during pregnancy. Lily has a unique and varied background that has given her the opportunity to work with pregnant women in many capacities. Lily breaks down the health benefits of exercise during pregnancy. Not only does exercise during pregnancy help to keep mom and baby healthy but it significantly decreases the risk of gestational diabetes not to mention the numerous additional benefits that Lily goes through during the show. Lily also outlines what exercises work best for women during different stages of pregnancy, and dispels many common myths about the level of exercise that is best for pregnancy. We talk about how much is too much, how much is too little and how to know where you fall on that continuum. This is a great episode for anyone wanting to get pregnant in the future or anyone who is already expecting! I think you'll enjoy this one! Topics discussed in today's episode What are the benefits of exercising during pregnancy for mom? How does exercise benefit the baby? What are the best exercises that women can do during pregnancy? Is it possible to "over-exercise"? The implications of exercising solely for the purpose of getting back that "perfect" "pre-pregnancy body" How to know when you should slow it down How to modify exercises for pregnancy What exercises you should NOT be doing while pregnant Why you can probably do way more than you think!
