In this celebratory and multifaceted episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into an eclectic mix of topics that blend music nostalgia, behind-the-scenes celebrity moments, and the heated debates of wrestling culture.1. Revisiting 1985: The Ultimate Musical ThrowbackThe duo kicks off the episode by reminiscing about the golden year of 1985, as they each reveal their top five favorite songs from that era. The conversation is filled with personal anecdotes and insights as they dissect tracks that defined the decade. Their selections span a broad spectrum of styles—from the pop sensibilities of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Wham's "Careless Whisper", to the rock edge of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and The Smiths' evocative "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". They also shine a light on the artful, quirky stylings of Talking Heads with "And She Was", while nodding to collaborative anthems like Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". Other memorable tracks discussed include Cheap Trick's "Tonight It's You", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rebellious "Don't Come Around Here No More", Robert Palmer's slick "Addicted To Love", and the ever-enduring Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Listeners get an intimate glimpse into why these songs resonate so powerfully with the hosts, reflecting both the cultural impact of 1985 and their own personal histories with the music. Check out their YouTube playlist with all these song choices.2. A Cameo Moment of HonorSwitching gears, Tim the Nerd recounts an exciting behind-the-scenes moment that highlights the podcast's growing influence. With creative savvy and a touch of fandom, Tim explains how he secured a heartfelt Cameo from Aubrey Edwards, the renowned referee from All Elite Wrestling. Celebrating the milestone of reaching 400 episodes, Aubrey Edwards shared some kind words about Friends Talking Nerdy. Tim dives into the process—using the Cameo platform—to connect with a wrestling personality who is not only a fan but also a respected figure in the industry. This segment offers a fun peek into the strategic networking and passion that fuels the podcast's community spirit.3. Wrestling, Ethics, and the Netflix Docuseries “Mr. McMahon”The episode then turns its focus to the world of professional wrestling with an in-depth discussion on the Netflix documentary “Mr. McMahon.” Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dissect the film's portrayal of Vince McMahon's tumultuous career and the various controversies that have shadowed his legacy. The hosts debate the ethical dilemmas wrestling fans face as they reconcile their admiration for the spectacle with the problematic aspects of McMahon's history. Their discussion is both analytical and impassioned, weighing the documentary's revelations against the cultural mythos of wrestling. Listeners are invited to reflect on the complexities of fandom—how one can celebrate the art of wrestling while critically engaging with its darker undercurrents. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Head to his website for information on how to purchase his EP, Here's To You, which is available on all digital platforms.Head to Friends Talking Nerdy's website for more information on where to find us online.
Send us a textCareless Whisper & Cryptid Saxophones: A Wham!tastic MysteryThis week on The Wednesday Night Podcast, we're diving headfirst into the smooth, sultry sounds of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper." Prepare for a deep dive into the emotional complexities of 80s pop, the power of a well-placed saxophone riff, and maybe even a few tales from music camp at Whootin Woods. But hold onto your feathered hair, folks, because things are about to get weird. We're drawing a direct (and possibly insane) line between the reclusive, saxophone-playing cryptid, Saxsquatch, and the late, great George Michael. Is it a conspiracy? Is it just Joe's fever dream? We're not entirely sure.Speaking of Joe, our own resident saxophonist is back, and he's bringing his trademark love-hate relationship with Bob along for the ride. Expect passionate saxophone solos, bitter arguments about Bob's musical taste, and maybe even a dramatic reenactment of a Saxsquatch sighting. So, grab your best pastel blazer, prepare for some emotional saxophone ballads, and join us for a night of Wham!tastic chaos and cryptid conspiracies. Just try not to get too lost in the whisper…or the woods.website: actonmusicproject.comemail: music@actonmusicproject.comCraig's phone number: (978) 310-1613
Unzählige Kulthits entstanden damals, von "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" über "Freedom" bis zum unverwüstlichen Weihnachts-Klassiker "Last Christmas". ++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ "Wham Rap (Enjoy What You Do)" "Young Guns (Go For It)" "Bad Boys" "Club Tropicana" "Nothing Looks the Same in the Light" "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" "Freedom" "Careless Whisper" "Last Christmas" "The Edge of Heaven" "A Different Corner" "I Want Your Sex" "Faith" "Father Figure" "Monkey" "Kissing A Fool" "I Knew You Were Waiting" "Heal The Pain" "Freedom! Part 2 with keyboard magic-dust provider, ~Andy Richards with more hits, more number ones (including a potential 2 more to make the full 10).And so much brilliant 80s pop…5. GEORGE MICHAELAn opportune meeting, a Sunday afternoon session and more immortality as Andy works with George on the iconic Careless Whisper. A later session with David Cassidy (on yet another top 10 smash) allows him the opportunity to work with George again.6. PET SHOP BOYSA triple whammy of number one singles between July 87 - April 88 as Andy works on It's a Sin, Always on my Mind and Heart (which he also produces). Not forgetting more hits in Suburbia and Rent as well as working on the Actually album.Later he works on the Liza Minelli album, Results (produced by the Pets) ‘resulting' in another top 10 hit in Losing My Mind.Comparisons are made between working with Liza and Dusty Springfield (who he produced on her Reputation album).7. CHRIS DE BURGHFrom the great experience working on the sublime pop of the Pets to the more problematic cheesy monobrow of The De Burgh.Another massive number one single with The Lady In Red (with a little help from George Michael) but at some cost.Despite the experience (and like mothers forgetting the pain of childbirth) Andy returns and works on another top 3 hit in Missing You. Plus discussion at the end on where else George Michael appears in the ARoeuvre.8. PREFAB SPROUTAndy produces the wonderful “Hey Manhattan!” By The Sprouts from their From Langley Park To Memphis album.Discussion on Paddy's views of the track (and why he is wrong, bless the little genius).9. PRODUCINGAs well as being the keyboard maestro go-to guy, Andy also produced many artists in the 80s.Here we go through some of them, from less successful experiences (Berlin) to yet more chart success with Fuzzbox and Holly Johnson. 10. MISCELLANEOUS80s odd and sods including the start of his film/TV work and a chance to mop up any other hits worked on, including a potential 10th number one (Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is being the potential 9th). Whose been kissing Madonna's brother? It's a Careless Whisper and the only living person would never admit to being jilted. An 80s frontman takes a swing at Taylor Swift. We do not want to be his social media manager right now. Did we brainstorm a more interesting Flash Gordon remake and Dori has been flirting with other 80s podcasts. When she realises how few awards they've won, she'll be back. Remember the TV Show, Adderley? Raise your left-hand if you do. Paulo found a hidden Sly Stallone gem that has it all - Billy Dee Williams, Rutger Hauer, Sly dressed as a little old lady. Someone needs to take the internet away from him. Finally, how did the Toy Hall of Fame (yes, a real thing) bring up Paulo's child-hood trauma? Find out at the end of the show. And it's a lot more interesting than playing with sand. ¿Has visto el documental biográfico “Quincy, A Life Beyond Measure”? OpenAI can't just rely on ChatGPT subscriptions to pay for everything, so they have other professional offerings, like their "Whisper" AI-powered transcription app. The problem is, like other AI Large Language Modeled apps, Whisper has an alarming amount of "hallucinations" - phrases or sentences it just randomly adds without regard to what it was actually supposed to be transcribing. When applied to medical transcription, or interlanguage interpretation, these too-frequent errors become hazardous. Then, we look at Paraquat (frequently marketed in the USA as Gramoxone) and the fact that despite being banned in many nations around the world - including the nation that MAKES the most of it - it is still used widely in the USA and Australia. Legal challenges are coming down the pike due to mounting evidence of Paraquat causing Parkinson's, despite the assurances of the manufacturers that there's no proof. Finally, we look at the Washington Post and LA Times' sudden reversal of planned endorsements of the Harris/Walz ticket. They wouldn't go so far as to endorse Trump, but clearly they are terrified of what he might do to them if he wins. Welcome to another whirlwind journey down memory lane, complete with the anthems of our youth, the echoes of country music royalty, and the hilarity of our concert misadventures. My wife Jennifer, our producer Drew Powell and I are your tour guides on this melodious adventure, threading nostalgia with life's lessons. Who knew once upon a time, the saxophone riff from Careless Whisper would become our children's musical lullaby? But it's not all laughter and light-hearted banter. Brace yourself as we navigate through the deep waters of fear and trauma. Picking up from where we left off with Drew's personal dance with the anxiety medication trazadone, we maneuver through the complex labyrinth of sleep deprivation and the game-changing impact of CPAP machines. We dare to venture into the smoky realms of marijuana and nitrous oxide, uncovering the role they played in our lives. As we near the end of our journey, the landscape shifts to the contours of self-reflection and personal growth. Fueled by the power of shared stories and the neurobiology of memories, we delve into the healing potential of connecting with our younger selves. Struggling with the dualities of humility and self-celebration, we seek to reconcile the complex dance between honouring our achievements while remaining grounded. This podcast is your ticket to an unforgettable ride encompassing music, nostalgia, trauma, healing and personal growth. So buckle up and let's hit the road!

SUMMARY:Zach Williams of The Lone Bellow chats about his songwriting development and the band's latest album, Love Songs for LosersPART ONE:Scott and Paul dive deep on the evolution of George Michael's "Careless Whisper" and the role that production plays in presenting a great song.PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Zach Williams of The Lone BellowABOUT ZACH WILLIAMS:Originally delving into songwriting as a way to cope with a family medical crisis, Zach Williams eventually moved to New York City to seriously pursue a career as a writer and performer. There, he formed the group The Lone Bellow, which released its self-titled debut album in early 2013. People magazine named it among the top 10 albums of the year, and it earned the attention of Aaron Dessner of the band The National, who produced The Lone Bellow's second album, Then Came the Morning. The group subsequently earned an Americana Music Award nomination for Duo or Group of the Year, and relocated to Nashville soon after. They went on to record a third album in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb before making yet another record with Aaron Dessner. The band's most recent release, Love Songs for Losers, is their first self-produced album. The lead single “Honey” became their first Top 10 single on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart.
