https://bit.ly/3K8UlDxWhy Public Schools Struggle to Help Kids with Dyslexia - An Interview with Gina Hayunga Video Here: https://youtu.be/V_1bbwOaMscI had the privilege of interviewing Gina Hayunga, a dyslexic woman who put herself through school to be a teacher. People were so amazed that she has dyslexia and teaches and she tells of her journey. What is really inspiring about this interview is she shares how she advocated for her daughter year after year. Gina's mom is dyslexic, and she saw the signs in her daughter, but the school refused to help because she didn't fall below the 25%! That's why schools struggle because they are looking for something that doesn't line up with their criteria. The eligibility requirement for dyslexia are: Average to high IQ, 2 or more grade levels below in reading (any aspect, including comprehension), and deficits in phonemic awareness. Gina's daughter Addyson didn't receive help until middle school. She is now in HS and her oral expression is beyond her years.” Her daughter has genetic dyslexia. She is receiving help now in HS and aims to go to college. Listen to this story. Does it sound like your story? Don't quit! Advocate for your kids. The right mentorship can change the course of your life. I struggled for about five years when I started my business. The biggest reason? I was stubborn and I thought I knew “enough” on my own. Then the universe shoved Jim Fortin and James Wedmore into my life. I went from living with my in-laws to a multi-million dollar business owner. Oftentimes, disruptions in your life help you create disruptions in your industry, very similar to today's guest. In this episode, I'm sitting down with college professor turned 6-figure entrepreneur, Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang. From overworked and underpaid, Dr. Addyson-Zhang stood up for her beliefs even in the face of bullying and heckling, left education, and created a thriving business. Tune in to learn empowering insights from someone who changed careers when it was far from popular or accepted, powerful mindset shifts for entrepreneurs who want to scale, how Dr. Addyson-Zhang landed a feature with Katie Couric, and several interviews with large publications (like Forbes and Pearson), and created a TEDx Talk, and so much more! The book features stories of 10 girls who dreamed big, thought differently, and who were changemakers in their own big and small ways. We speak to two of the girls featured in the book, firstly Addyson from the US, who successfully raised more than 130 thousand US dollars to install clean water pumps in Kenya, and also Akhi from Bangladesh, who started her own sewing business and became a community hero during the pandemic. Is school driving out your child's creativity? Is a formal degree the only way to a fulling or financially rewarding career? Is your child's degree making your child unhirable? After fifteen years of teaching college students, Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang quit her job as a professor. Kids are taught they need a college education to enjoy a fulling or financially rewarding life. But that isn't true! Dr. Ai believes we might be doing a disservice to our kids by telling them college is the only way to succeed or that college education might be making them unhirable in the real world. Today's kids need permission to do everything. Kids are so afraid of making a mistake or not getting an "A" that don't try! They don't know how to think on their own. Our current educational system is driving the creativity, innovation, and curiosity out of our children. And we need to change that. Tune into my conversation with Dr. Ai we discuss the loss of child creativity. Addyson Rowe is a Research Assistant intern with us at BREDL and graduate student in Environmental Science Policy at Duke University. She has been identifying heired properties that Dominion energy has bought or tried to buy in order to construct the pipeline there. A lot of these properties end up not getting signed off on by the owners because heir properties have so many owners that often don't even live in the state anymore, so they can't get in contact with them to sign or they fail to show up to court and Dominion automatically gets the land by default; without having to pay all of the owners. She is calling attention to this as well as identifying the different amounts paid to owners depending on when they agreed to sign. Gabrielle James is an intern with us a BREDL and a law student at UNC Chapel Hill. She is doing legal research on the Atlantic coast pipelines acquisition of heired property or essentially property that is passed to heirs without a will. This practice significantly disadvantages poor people and communities of color and allows corporations like Dominion who were building the ACP to easily (and often unfairly) acquire property and easements. The School Sucks Podcast is a place where we have tough conversations about school in order to rethink and reinvent education. Our goal is that no student ever has to say "school sucks" ever again. In this episode, I had a chance to chat with my friend Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang, the Founder of Classroom Without Walls. We discussed education innovation, the college system, and the benefits of homeschooling. With the pandemic shifting almost every aspect of life, homeschooling might feel like the last straw. How does one take traditional education and deliver it from home, in a way that keeps everyone happy. On today's episode, we discuss why this is the time to take control of your children's education and how this time in history may well be the wake up call for our historically slow to change educational system. In today's show we address: What are some of the short-comings of traditional education today? What can I do to foster a better learning environment in my home? How can I work with teachers to adapt online curriculum for me and my children? How do I know my child is receiving the best education they can to set them up for a successful future? Karen Morales welcomes Disruptive Educator, Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang, as well as Teacher and Coach, Kathy Fritz, to speak about the changing education systems and why it's important to ride the 2020 wave of education evolution. We're not all meant to be teachers, but there are ways in which we can help our children reach their goals and create a future that makes them flourish. Tune into this week's episode for advice on homeschool scheduling, practicing life skills with your kids, and helping them utilize their strengths and passions. 3 MAJOR POINTS DISCUSSED ● The coronavirus era is a great time to take control of your children's education. The century old education model is broken, but the pandemic has accelerated some much-needed reform. Technology is making learning more accessible, personal, and relevant to students' interests. As a parent, you now have the opportunity to take control of your child's learning experiences. Dr. Ai explains why it's important for them to build their own online digital footprint, as well as an online network. She also provides inspiring insight into why the best education happens outside the classroom. ● Learning must be personalized. Children are not standardized, so their learning experience should not be standardized. With focus on GPA and IQ, children aren't learning important soft skills and life skills, leading to lower levels of innovation and creativity. Focusing on what children are good at, rather than what they are not so good at, is key to cultivating the intrinsic drive to learn and succeed in life. Dr. Ai details the top 3 life skills that parents and teachers should be focusing on in 2020. ● How do I start optimizing my child's homeschooling education? You don't have to do it all at once. Starting small will cause you to gain momentum and confidence in your ability to foster a fun and educational atmosphere for your child. Kathy and Dr. Ai offer valuable tips on what you can do to deal with the challenges of the system and make personalized tweaks in your child's educational schedule. Dr. Ai explains how the next generation is entering a “show me don't tell me economy” and why that matters. She emphasizes eliminating the reward system we've inadvertently created, building breaks into your child's schedule, and building a positive parent/teacher relationship.

I thought it would be an insightful social experiment to hear what young people thought of the police at various stages in life. So in this episode I talked with a kids who range in age from three years old to 17 years old. It was a good illustration of the shifts from innocence to reality and I hope it adds value to you as a listener. Seeing life through the lens of a child can wake us up to things that should be so simple but have somehow been distorted as we grow older and experience more life. Thank you to the parents of my guests for permitting me to interview your amazing children. Thank you so very much to Jayley, Blake, Addyson, Shayla, Allyn, Emma and Elena for being brave and giving of your time!
